Could they be made to happen... anywhere? Outside of a sanctuary of course. But anywhere, anytime, two players can battle it out?
Even if it can't, I am very interested on thoughts about that.

I like PvP, but open PvP like that... please No. Just No.
Even if we would get some sort of option to turn it off (as in: not being able to be randomly attacked by some idiot while gathering/questing/just standing around afking or basically playing the game) I still dont see the point of it and cant imagine it being a good fit. Community is toxic enough at it is already, we dont need people killing other people before engaging a hunt mob - and I cant see how that would fit the "lore". Seeing how the devs/lore-team already had a hardtime putting in some sort of "lore" for "friendly" PvP in frontlines, I cant imagine them letting us murder our comrads outside of the battlegrounds.
Also! With the dice-feature we have, you can already battle stuff out! Just roll the dice and do the math! #penandpaper
Dueling is pointless as the classes aren't balanced for 1 vs 1.
Still always thought it would be cool to duel in the Coliseum in Ul'dah. Could have spectators there as well, but of course its at the wolves den cause that's where all forms of PvP will be -_-
I think you need to challenge a person to a duel and have that other person accept before both can fight. If so, open world PvP can be a thing and we won't have to worry about getting killed while crafting, gathering or afking.
Though whether or not such a system is possible for them, who knows, since the current system you have to be in the Dueling Square. Maybe they can expand it for more zones
Well, FWIW we wouldn't be able to just randomly attack another player. It would have to be initiated from one player to another, and the other player would have to accept. PvP rules still apply, which is why I'm not sure it can be done in the open world. I know this is a bit of a thought provoking topic, but I was just curious the thoughts of others about it. Wasn't sure if good, bad, or ugly.
If it's fun and successful, maybe, as you have to prompt someone for it. Maybe add Dueling friendly areas in each city, such as the colosseum in Ul'dah and the Proving Grounds in Ishgard.
Missing the point. It's not a competitive piece of content, it's just a fun way to pass the time, settle a dispute or just beat up your friends. It's not supposed to be balanced.
Back on topic, it would be good to make other duelling areas. The arena in Foundation where you engaged in Trial by Combat in the MSQ would be a cool place to fight.
If and only if they simultaneously added the ability to auto-reject and hide any requests for it, I would not be upset if they started allowing duels outside of the Wolf's Den. Thanks to WoW, and more specifically Goldshire, the ability to request a duel anywhere (and repeatedly) is not something I want to see here but I know people do and if I'm allowed to opt out, hey, that's fine with me.
So that means it's groundless content? Your second suggestion "settle a dispute" can't even be obtained if the fights aren't balanced. This addition alone had the potential to add a great mix to the game, even possibly have player created tournaments and could have helped bolster the near dead PvP in this game. But without balance even fighting friends for laughs or killing time isn't going to be enjoyable when the Tank is just gonna pop invulnerability and wale on you for a easy vicious victory.
I would like to see it moved to other areas, instead of traveling to one small area. And the toggle option that was brought up would be nice. So that people who are not into that (fighting anywhere/anytime), can just go about their day without any bother from others looking for one on one PVP fun.

I'm not against dueling, but I myself never really saw the appeal to it.
In DC Universe Online dueling was a big deal to a lot of people. It was more for bragging rights than anything else.
Most of it happened in the Hall Of Doom which was the safe-space HQ.
Some duelers would get tricky. If they sent you a duel invite, and you declined, he/she would follow you around tell you started using the broker, bank or mailbox and then send the invite again, with the hopes that you will accidentally hit accept while you are distracted thinking you are clicking on something in your bank or w/e.
I never partook. Kept my game settings to an automatic ignore dueling invites. When reading the chatbox, the same people who were always in there doing nothing but dueling, seemed to be keeping a list of who they have fought and beat. So every now and then I would get followed around and taunted by someone trying to get me to duel them. My level was maxed, good gear, good mods, lot of Achievement Points. If they ever raided with me they knew I almost always topped the DPS chart. Taunting just never really got me heated. If anything I thought it was funny. Lot of conversations went like...
Dueler: Why won't you duel me? You scared?
Me: Terrified.
Dueler: Thought so, Because you know I will win.
Me: I know you will. I'm thinking about switching to World Of Warcraft just so I don't run into you again. Your just too strong.
Dueler: Your a noob.
Me: Even less. I am more of "noo" iv not even earned the letter "b" at the end of the word yet.
lol it really annoyed them they could not scratch my name off their victory list. And by instead of me getting upset by their taunts, I was laughing at them. So by not dueling, I was winning. XD
Community is toxic yet you call them comrades. Sure. Options are nice. Don't like that PvP, fine, stay out. Having PvP this way opens for less straight line on-rails content. Players would have something to do other than group with 8 people and practice a routined dance to bring down a boss "raid". Wouldn't fit into lore. Thats getting old, and the answer still stands, lore is easily manipulated. Adventurers are allowed to beat other adventurers in the name of their FC in a open-area supervised by the grand companies to see who will own the land or be the most famous group or player. FC wars would be the best thing honestly.
I know you just didn't recommend battle dice.... Your playing a final fantasy game and you wanna...Yeah no, I'm not goin there.
I kinda feel like them adding the dual grounds to the wolves den is a wasted opertunity to use the coliseum in uldah
1000x this ^
I think if it was introduced, if not in a specific area of cities only, then cities should not be a part of the feature...anywhere except cities. ppl spamming abilities over and over now just "because" is annoying enough, I can only imagine the noise spamming if they could actually duel on top of everyone at the mb....
Nothing against the concept, just ensure option to include 1. auto reject requests + 2. don't make it annoying for those in the cities crafting/chilling/sending out retainers etc. Oo
Well yes, this is why there is no reward for it. Not every piece of content n this game requires some form of progression to be fun and duels in particular are not meant to be taken seriously. If you play against a tank who just pops invincibility then find ways around it, you know, like you would in team PvP?
If they did try and make it competitive then they would have to balance every single job for 1 on 1. Considering Yoshi-P is actively looking for more developers to help with raid content I would rather they spent their time and resources on PvE.
Personally I hope we can use DoH classes and see who can batter the other one to death with a frying pan first.
They added this duel mode because people insisted and insisted and insisted that they wanted it. Devs said over and over again that 1v1 pvp wouldn't be balanced in any way, people said they didn't care and that they just wanted the means to engage in 1v1 battles for different personal reasons (usually "for fun"). What we're getting is exactly what was asked for by the community, nothing else. That's why this was NEVER meant to be competitive. You can't gauge this the same way as other content in the game. And I welcome this addition for what it is.
If that'd ever happen the dps is a clown. Its like a dps loses a fight to a whm and goes off to kill a monster and says he won the last victory. -_-
Also yes, as Griffin said, we find ways around it. Cant attack the tank, pop cooldowns to nullify stuns or slows and use sprint to keep a distance. Its pretty simple stuff.
Please, you know there's going to be a ton of naked "dueling" on Balmung now...especially with Dragoons.
More on topic, I know several people who want to do this (myself included) just to BS around and have fun. Bets on matches will be had, some more balanced than others, some just for the heck of it. Another way to pass the time, do something different, and compete with friends.
If its popular enough, it could be expanded, for sure. Maybe an actual 1v1 tourney or something later on in the Colosseum (with proper 1v1 balancing) and stuff like that. But due to the way PvP skills work, it will only be available in designated areas, and currently that's only at the Pier.
Hard to be a dueling healer when they've still taken away the cleric stance. >____> How fun is it to battle a healer or healer vs healer with no damage buffs?
I want it to be available everywhere. Including sanctuary areas, residential areas, inside the estates and apartments, and during duty.
We'd also need some sort of setting or system to prevent the option at times - ie: a way to block the pop up. The number of times I accidentally took a teleport because the pop up popped up while I was trying to do something else and accidentally clicked yes while trying to confirm something else. ;_;
Duel 1vs1 is always about having fun more than the fight itself. Of course there are times that one will want to proof they Re better than other. In other games, healer did indeed got moments to shine. The excessive healing properties and the buffs they gave to themselves plus the 1-2 skills that wad mostly use to lure could kill in PvP if u knew how to gear/stats ur class.
I was hoping for the ability to duel for RP reasons, but limiting it to one spot way out of the way of everything kind of ruins that D:
