This is pre 1.20 so some things may be fixed soon with redistribution of abilities.
Pugilist seems to be the new thief, hate control with spike damage.
But there are some gleaming issues with this. First is a lack of hate
control. Accomplice is ok, but the other abilities to complete this are
spread across 2 other classes. As for the spike damage with a 1 min
cool down on pugilist's only attack buff and 2000+tp move the
damage should be much much higher. Seeing as pugilist loses most
of it's damage in party situations due to the lack of haymaker.
(Jarring strike is a joke, less than 50% of haymaker damage for a .5 sec stun)
Evasion for pugilist is a joke, we may have the highest evasion for
10 secs out of every 30. The issue is that other classes can have
just as much or higher base evasion.
Confusing weapon materia magic potency? Last I checked seismic
shock is the only elemental attack for pugilist. Does Yoshi-P expect
pugilists to start casting spells?
I guess what I'm trying to get at, is what the %*$& is pugilists role?

This is what I see:
Pug: Burst damage melee with a bit of tanking abilities together with a thrill for adventure and sexy garments (however nice those plated gear may or may not look to you, they defy the meaning of sexy in all senses of the word, now guess what gear I'm talking about ^_^ )
Just like every other class, at the moment, due to the armory system, the class functions best with support abilities/traits from other classes. A MRD isn't going to tank a boss comfortably without support abilities from GLA and PUG. A LNC won't be able to do as much damage without support abilities from MRD and PUG and maybe even ARC.
Granted, the gear choices and available HP for the PUG atm doesn't help with the tanking role, but I guess for some NM's, it's quite doable. With how hard a big boss or NM hits (e.g. Ifrit or great buffalo), you'd still want a properly plated tank.
Damage wise, I'd say it's better than MRD on a 1v1 environment and more risky to play than a LNC. But we all know that balancing is happening so DD positions may change in the near future.
As with the materia thing, I think it's just there to balance out the number of materias you can put on various classes' weapons and goes along the lines of: ok, all the base materia for pug weapon covered, need one more... let's just choose the least used one... ah there we go: m.potency!

I agree with above, this game is out for 1 year and some ppl still dont get that you NEED other class abilities.
Swaping things around is the gimmick of the current class sytem, its like saying that you dont want subjobs in FF11, can't happen.
Were good DDs in solo situations :P -

All class balancing they're doing is in preparation for 1.21 and jobs. It might seem odd now, but it should make sense in the future.

Before auto-attack (not that i want to go back to button mashing) pug was a good choice for dps or tank. Now it seems the class is nothing more than decent at soloing (lower dps and defense than other melee classes). The only reason to currently level it is for second wind and feather foot, outside of that it has no abilities worth mentioning. So for now it's play pug for fun or for second wind but don't expect to do anything well.Quote:

So were still good DD on single targets :P
There is no reason to rule out Pug from parties he can still make it work, if there are other options on who to invite, first come, first served IMO. -
