What about Sentinel no Job? (lets get rid of it)

So is sentinel going to be dropped off the class list eventually? I am curious to know what is going on with this. It didn't get a job.

Its just kind of "there". It's not a true class, you can't just be a Sentinel without also being a gladiator/thaumaturge/conjurer. So whats the deal? I bet the problem is if you remove it people will scream fowl play as if "its started. I'm losing character development. i knew this would happen"
But for me, really who cares? Just reshuffle the abilities and lets get rid of it. You don't earn Sentinel it is tacked on as exp on the classes that have shields.

If you give sentinel a new identity and a weapon, now everyone who leveled gladiator thm or conj end up with a level 50 class and new mechanics they did not learn. It would not be fair to people who level the class after the change.

3. Shield Skill

Not being bound to any class in particular, the shield skill has been handled as an irregularity when it came to the obtainment of experience points and actions. In reviewing the identity of each class, it was decided that shield actions should be made a part of the gladiator arsenal. In order to streamline the system and accentuate class uniqueness, the shield skill will be phased out and instead take the form of actions and traits learnable by gladiators.

Please be aware that the above changes will render all gains associated with the shield skill (levels and EXP) invalid.

What are you talking about "new identity" and "new weapon"... classes are determined by their weapon... Sentinel = Shield. Again, I have no idea what you're talking about.

What "change"... what's "not fair"... you're confusion has caused me to become confused and thus post something that is probably confusing...

its actually nice having those sentinel abilities of your soloing your mage class. its not a class, its a set of shield abilities so lets just leave it at that.

It would be really fun to see sentinel as a true class. The character wielding a two-handed shield... a true tank class! :D

No other class has dependency's. They are fully functional as their own class. Sentinal is not. It is not a true "Class". It did not get a job. It seems unworthy of being called a "Class". Evasion is not a class, accuracy is not a class. Sentinel should not be a class. It should be a skill that is primarily important to shield using Classes. Very simple to understand, I'm not asking you to agree.

ok I am a failure of an OP on this one i guess lol. But if anyone has information on what's going on with sentinal can you post it. :)

Shield is a weapon, weapon = class... thus Sentinel is a class. Regardless of that you can't only be Sentinel it's an enhancing class. By enhancing your abilities on other classes. The requirement for a class is not that they are fully functional on their own. I'd like to see you do any endgame with only one class leveled.

If you needed to equip a "Whip" in your off-hand to evade, that would be a class. If you needed to equip a "Hilt" in your offhand to parry that would be a class. The fact is you don't, but you certainly need a Shield to block... and by increasing your Shield skill....... you get abilities. You don't get 'Perfect Evasion' from increasing your evasion skill, you don't get 'Invincible' from increasing your parry skill.

I'm gonna toss this out there... my assumption is that in order to give the Sentinel abilities to multiple classes (Gla/Con/Thm) they had to create a separate class because their are probably unique name constraints for abilities in their poorly developed database.

As for "what's happening"... nothing is happening. Sentinel isn't getting a job. Sentinel is a class and will be used for classes. Jobs will have their own set of abilities, which (on Gla) could possibly pool from the Sentinel class abilities.

I don't know what you're confused about, still.

Personally, I then Sentinel should be renamed and moved to Attributes instead of Skills.

Much like gauntlets are armor, but if you punch someone in the face do they become a weapon? I think they are still armor.

Yeah I was thinking about that... it's kind of armor but kind of a weapon in a way...

In the game I think it's defined as armor, I was considering things you that have in your hands as weapons. Whereas armor is something you put on and don't have to "hold" I guess. I was thinking Shield is equipped in a weapon slot, when saying that "shield is a weapon".

Anyway, the point is Sentinel is a class and won't be changed.

I think the bigger question here is... if you leveled Glad / Thm / Con why wouldn't you equip a shield?

Shield is indeed an armor, but in FFXIV it's a weapon. Data wise it is indeed a true class, it's makeup is like any other class, but there can't be a job attached to it unless it's a requirement for another like how Paladin is Gladiator + Marauder.

Getting rid of it is pointless since you could easily say they could get rid of Marauder because they can easily shuffle those abilities to Gladiator and Pugilist. Nothing is really going to happen to this, it's just a secondary set of (helpful) skills you learn through leveling it.

A shield is both weapon and armor. a weapon is anything you use to harm another. so shield bash turns this piece of armor into a weapon.

A shield can be defensive weapon. shield bashing, using the edge of the shield, stopping an enemy charge, pushing them back.

The way shield is se tup makes me think they probably originally had plans to implement other classes that functioned similarily.

Who cares if it's a weapon or armor or a fish. You put it in your offhand, it's a class, it levels up along side your main weapon's class and is not meant to exist independantly.

It is a side dish. It accompanies the main dish. It serves no purpose existing on its own but together with the main dish serves to enhance it. Also you can take it or leave it. Why you would leave it when it simply requires wearing the shield and forgetting about it is beyond me. You never know when some of the abilities it grants you might come in handy.

What the hell would a shield class or job be anyhow? A combat dummy?

I agree with Rentahamster. The classes that can equip a shield should just automatically learn shield skills at specified levels and they should scrap Sentinel as its own class identity. Maybe this is something they'll be announcing in their class changes letter.

They should go further with this for Gladiator/Marauder/Pugilist (and their upcoming Jobs if applicable) for their abilities that activate upon a block/parry/dodge and have them light up when you have the TP AND perform the associated defensive action. That way it's easier to visually tell when you can use Phalanx/Fracture/Haymaker.

On the other hand - this is way off topic, but wouldn't it be cool to introduce other enhancing classes? Like Grips, Spellbooks that gives you limited traits and skillsets

Or job stones that give you access to certain abilities?
