So! I just got my copy last night for my birthday. Since the game itself has been temporarily shut down, does anyone recommend any reading material that will help me learn about the world and its controls? I am used to Warcraft UI.

Have you looked up The Lodestone? Some game features are explained there.
There are a TON of great resources, nearly all of them done by the community. If you plan to fish I have a few articles that may help. A Visual Guide to Baits and Pro-Pullers Guide.
Since You just got it recently I assume you will be doing some running around to cities to for the first time. I made a Travel guide which would be useful for your first journey outside your starting city.
Other than that if your more specific in your request for information I am sure we can point you out to more guides that would be of use to you!

Thank you so much! I intend to take the down time to learn how to play so I dont start out a complete newbie. I started out on Besaid as an Archer, my friend said it would be a good class to get used to the game with.
Aw that blows just got the game.../comfort
As for learning I find the wiki part of Eorzeapedia very helpful as for learning what stats you'd want and just the basics.
Well, if you have any questions I'll be happy to assist you personally. Just ask away. :3
One thing though: It's a good idea to start a craft. It's a good way to gain money and xp, and also depending on what crafts(s) you roll you can avoid repair costs.
Welcome to Eorzea!
Trying to find a friendly, helpful Linkshell early on would be my bit of advice. It can make a huge difference in how much you enjoy the game.
Meeting people in-game can be difficult -- like walking into a party late and people are already socializing in their own groups... But try talking publicly using /say, greet people, and try to keep your chin up even if people seem to be ignoring you at first.
Wow, so much information! I have a lot to study this week it seems!
Hiya Rozien! And welcome to Eorzea! P.s. Vesper's guides are good!
In terms of interface, it won't flow as intuitively as Warcraft if you're using the mouse (I.e. can't right click on a vendor to sell, an item to equip, etc.) So it may take a little getting used to.
Gamepad from Xbox360 or PS3 may also be used to navigate game just as an option.
Threads like this make me want to get the game even with all the problems it has. I've been seriously debating it and probably will after the servers come back up.
Hi Satsuke,
If you do get the game, I hope you enjoy it as much as some of us do. ^^
Two things I feel are the biggest barriers to some people enjoying the game are:
- Understanding that it's an evolving game -- not a finished product. Content is there, but it is scattered in little bits and it can take quite a while to move forward. SE should be adding more content as we go along, though.
- It's meant to be a social game and is definitely more fun if you're the type who can make friends -- especially friends who are different kinds of players. Friends can help you with repairs, securing materials, and getting new items. They can ease the boredom when you find yourself grinding.
Good luck!
