Customary "When are summoners getting new summons" thread

The horse was looking a little ripe, so I figured it needed a good beating.

For real though... every time I see this picture I remember why I don't really feel any love for the aesthetics of my summoner.

Could we please see some new skins for this soon? I had heard there were some in the works for Heavensward release... and nada.

They've been confirmed to be coming in 3.4. We don't know specifically which ones yet, however, besides also regaining the ability to switch back to Carbuncle.

In the live letter prior to 3.3 Yoshi confirmed that the first pet glamours would be coming in 3.4. They said it would include Carbuncles but beyond that we're not sure exactly what's coming yet. Probably only one of the Shiva/Ramuh/Leviathan egis, if any just yet. They plan to release them gradually over several patches.

They have only confirmed that Summoners would get a glamour EGI feature in 3.4 (plans can be changed), right now we only know that we are getting Carbuncle, no clue on which Carbuncle we are getting, but ingame we have seen 4 of them, Emerald and Topaz is used by the Arcanist class and Ruby and Onyx is used by a NPC. I want to see Shiva, Ramuh, Leviatian and the other Primal Egi. Yoshida did say that they are going to release one EGI glamour each patch, so since Carbuncle has been confirmed for 3.4, unless Yoshida meant a new EGI each patch, I reckon we will not see a real new EGI untill 3.5, that is assuming we are going to start getting the EGI glamour feature in 3.4.

I didn't know the egi-glamour was so close or that Shiva, Ramuh and Leviathan could be on the cards. I might get back into Summoning.

I still wish spur made your pet temporarily grow 40% in size to match the buff though.

I might start playing summoner again when they let us use the carbuncle glamor for egi. I know they are putting a lot of resources into a more elaborate system but I would be fine with just reverting to the arcanist's carby pet and nothing more. I think lots of people will use carbuncle.

I will never be satisfied with my summoner until I have a tiny Shiva alongside me to match with the rest of my character's theme :c Hopefully we'll get lucky and get at least the other three ARR primals alongside some carbuncle glamours when 3.4 hits (if they actually stick to what they said and give it to us then..)

Thing that makes me wonder though, are they simply skins like with our glamour or will they be a glamour per role. Like that Shiva can only glamour over Ifrit or Garuda but not over Titan and so on with the others.

I always thought the black one was Obsidian not Onyx, and there is also a white one in Idyllshire to add to the list. What I want to see is any mention of SCH and MCH pets as part of this system (it is a waste to not include all the pet jobs)

You know would also blow minds? Glamour has a fair habit of being dyeable, solid pink Carby anyone? Maybe blood red? Just a minor hope seeing as the colors don't seem to be limited the blue/gold. I thought the black one was interesting but then a solid white, unless there is some kind of lore reason to it? Not saying the Egis should be dyeable but for carbuncle sure would be an interesting site.

if it's only glamour, then what would happen to the pet's skill animations? (especially enkindle)
are they going to stay the same?
would my emerald carby perform aerial blast?

When? Probably never. It's pretty clear to me that SE has basically abandoned the pet system at this point outside of anything glamour.

I think it would be this as the different forms currently allow other party members to discern it's abilities, as egis don't shown on party lists unless it's yours.

I would be fine with this, myself.

But, what could new summons do that isn't covered by the current ones? We have a buff healer, regen healer, melee DPS, ranged DPS, and tank....

A debuffer maybe, but SMN/SCH themselves have skills to cover that, so it would be redundant unless it was attached to another job, I think.

Literally, anything but a damage-on-hit-taken ally-applicable shield, a stun, a knockback, a self-AoE, a target-AoE, an enmity-enhanced-AoE, or self-mitigation for Summoner; or a AoE HoT, an AoE +%healing received buff, an AoE cleanse, or an AoE 3% attack speed buff at half-uptime for Scholar. That's a lot of options.

Back before much was known about HW, they said SMNs would be getting new pets. That sounded cool and all, but I was interested in what types of roles new egis would serve since we already had a melee, rangedDoT extender, and tank pet. So I think it was asked (I know I at least posed a related question in an 'Ask the Producer' thread) and then they back-pedaled and said new egis weren't going to be a thing and they decided it'd just be new glamours (as in, the remaining 3 elemental primals). I don't particularly blame them, as they pretty much designed themselves into a balancing nightmare, since there's still the whole "which DPS egi is more useful" thing going on between just 2 egis.

I can't help but /facepalm that this far into the expansion they are only letting us use ACN's pets' skins now on SMN (which, correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't take too much resources to have done?) and everything else looks like "TBA."

Even then, I just don't really see a reason to add Summon 4 or Summon 5 when we have the option to build upon the current set just as well. Actually, that's what I'm hoping for in 4.0.

The glamours are the easy way out, sure, but SMN, as is, is quite powerful, and SCH is a monster.

Might as well give us Puppeteer or Beastmaster if we're going that far.

I wish by Egi glamours SE means summons like the ones seen in Final Fantasy X!...

Can you imagine how cool would it be to have a smaller, human sized version of the real Garuda, Ifrit and Titan!?...

That way we could use them just like Yuna does in FFX, just watch a video of her using Shiva and you'll see how cool they look!...

They would look fantastic but then SE might come up with the memory limitations excuse since they would be basically another full character on screen and not just a pet with a few polygons!... :confused:

All I want is to replace Garuda with wind up Succubus, SE.

The devs explained their philosophy at the start of 3.0 in that they want to move away from creating a mass pet job and instead focus on giving the skills to the SMN itself (hence bahamut being a "trance" not a pet), this being more balanced, less of a strain on resources, and overall would produce a more interesting job (i.e. the alternative is you get one new pet and no new skills). The egi glamour is to make up with their change of heart when it comes to pets.

On an unrelated subject, can we not have more pets and instead balance the ones we already have? There is very little reason to use anything but Garuda because contagion2strongplznerf (or don't but at least make the other pets more viable)

I'd love a pet that wasn't a pet - but a companion. Maybe an aether duplicate of an npc from the msq that you summoned to aid you. They could have the same abilities as the current pets, so really just a shift in looks - but I think it would be great fighting along side some of the past/current characters.

This, frankly, is the reason it's taken them so long to implement them. There's not many changes that need to be made for Emerald and Topaz Carbuncle, since they already have equivalents to their Egis' moves, but they do need a new Enkindle animation (Searing Light would be a good choice for Emerald Carby, since that's the ultimate move Carbuncle used in FFXI). Similarly, any other Glamours will need to have entirely new animations designed for every ability they mimic. If you glamour Shiva over Ifrit, for example, it wouldn't make a lot of sense for Shiva-Egi to use moves like Inferno or Crimson Cyclone! She would instead use Diamond Dust and Glacier Bash.

It's also why I believe that each glamour will likely only be able to be applied to one type of summon. Otherwise, they'd need to make animations for all three summons, for every glamour!

I personally would have been really happy if the last 2 Summoner skills had been:
Summon IV - uses attunement to upgrade your summon to Bahamut-egi. Also makes Ruin III cheaper.
Enkindle II - commands Summon IV to go absolutely mental at a cost of tiring himself out and turning back in to Garuda.

Damage and gameplay wise I think you should end up in roughly the same place as current Summoner but with a more 'summonery' feel :).
Although I'm not speaking from personal experience there, I was pretty disappointed with the lack of pet focus and dropped the job in 3.0.

It would actually make me really sad if this is the route they go down. Summoner would be a title, only, in this case and really it would just be utility based black mage with some of their DPS tied to a killable NPC. I consider that neither fun, nor a pet class

I would much prefer to see them go the opposite route, putting MORE emphasis on the pet in order to make it a more interesting and unique job, sort of like the summoner in Aion, where the player is more like a puppet master and the bulk of the power and abilities come from the pet itself.

De-emphasizing the pet on the only pet class just makes it more homogeneous with the other classes, IMO.

Yes that's the Aion Spiritmaster, with a selection of Elemental Spirits (Fire, Earth, Wind, Water, etc) to use. A good mix of pet and character skills.

I agree, personally I feel summoner should be more along the lines of this. PSO2 Summoner
Just you control the pet but do not actually participate other than commanding. Eh maybe beastmaster tho?

Perhaps this is what they had in mind? The devs may have realised that they can't add pets at the rate that new primals come out (resources, balance etc.), so what they decided instead was add one new pet every now and again (4.0), from there the egi glamour system allows them to add the new skins for the primals that people want to see. The result being that we get more pets, and get the egis we want to see in the fastest possible way.

Can SCH have Carby's too?

Oooh, Ametrine Carbuncle to cover Selene (purple/yellow colors) and Tourmaline Carbuncle to cover Eos. (yellow/green colors).

Still identifiable by role, still cute carbuncles!

If they don't allow us to glamour whatever primal onto any role then this whole system is flawed and a waste of time, money and energy.

PS. The whole role system for egis was a stupid idea to begin with....

I can see this route potentially bringing SMN closer to what it is in most other FFs. If they give the SMN powerful abilities that briefly show the summon in their full glory.

In most of the games, summoners were all about huge, expensive spells with amazing effects that made you feel like you have all the force of nature at your fingertips. You summoned, they did their thing while you watch something big and cool, then they disappear.
The closest I get to that satisfaction here is when I pop a Rage Pomander.

In 11, you could use them as sustained pets if you had the gear to support it. But for big fights, I typically saw summon, Blood Pact for big damages, put away, sit to recover MP so you can afford to keep using Blood Pact whenever it's up.

Here, SMNs are still powerful, and probably a lot easier to balance, but they don't feel like a Final Fantasy summoner.

I hope not. Arcanist loses carbuncle and gains Eos/Selene immediately upon equipping the SCH soul crystal. When Arcanist becomes a SMN, the SMN gains Ifrit-egi with Summon III. Summon I and Summon II at this point still are Carbuncles, and remain so until they get Titan-Egi at 35 to replace Topaz Carbuncle, then Garuda-Egi at 45 to replace Emerald Carbuncle, through their job quests.

I recognize that the shared class for SMN/SCH has caused a lot of trouble, balance-wise as well as lore-wise. But I think Carbuncle should be reserved for SMN, who's job it is to literally summon things to fight for them. The fact that Scholar got pets in this game is an anomaly in regards to the entire FF franchise, I hope they keep it limited to fairies (who are literally the same entity, as opposed to separate, summoned creatures that SMN is known for).

Carbys should never be a thing for SCHs. SCHs identity is with their faerie, a single entity, in contrast to the SMN whose identity is meant to be in summoning various different creatures. Besides, this whole feature is SE trying to compensate for going back on their claims pre HW, since they led SMNs to believe that new playable Egis would be available. Therefore it's likely to remain SMN exclusive.
