Dorito samurai armor yes please
Welcome to 2016 gaming. Enjoy your stay!
I don't know what a dorito pope is, but I would rather the devs not turn into them via shameless fates, then turning around and saying "we lack the time/resources!" when legit concerns are brought up.
Cause people are going to look at this event, point at it and say "This is what you were doing! You were 'too busy' making fluff!"
Oh look, another thread. Why not just post in the same thread as everyone else? Not like they are going to cancel it since it started already.
Well, FFXV has this:

(The American Express sign for those who can't see it) so it seems like Square Enix aren't going to shy away from real world product placement and advertisements in their games these days. There isn't much to be done about it either because any criticism will just bring out the whole 'it's just a bit of fun, just ignore it' crowd from people.
So long as the game as a whole remains fun I'll continue playing of course but I do have some concerns about this sort of thing becoming more common. They've already started making the Hildibrand type antics more and more frequent as part of world events so I hope they don't end up leaking into the MSQ's as well.
It's a meme involving Geoff Keighley wearing a Dorito on his head like a pope hat. It was inspired by one of history's most cringe inducing "interviews" wherein questions were asked such as (paraphrasing) "If you were trapped on a desert island and could only bring one food, would it be Mountain Dew or Doritos?" The interview was ostensibly about a game, but Geoff was surrounded by giant ads and stacks of Mountain Dew and Doritos.

Pikmin's use of real products is to enhance the experience. You know that you're on earth, and so seeing a Duracell battery is normal.
American Express in XV implies that America exists in that world. It immediately pulls you out of the experience.
Yokai Watch pulls me out of XIV.
I have yet to start the event, but as long as its fun I don't care about the "advertising" part; although FATES, argh, and not even a special one with a guaranteed drop. But complaining about advertising is just dumb. Many games advertise other things, both their own and other products, its how they get funding. I mean, we've had advertising for other games before they were just for SE games, XIII-3, XI, and Dragon Quest. I mean would people be this upset id it was a Pokemon event? Thats bigger in the west more than Yo-Kai Watch, but who knows.
What's the problem really? We get more minions and weapons. They look great, some of us actually like yokai.
SE gets paid to put more content for me to do in the game? This isn't exactly product placement, that would be having posters that say "buy coke" plastered across the gold saucer. This is a collaboration event (something for us to do), paid for and partly made by level 5, it is extra revenue to pay for new content and infrastructure (like how the mogstation that people like to moan about paid for the EU datacenter), AND you get a fun little temporary event out of it. I've wanted more collaborations since we had the XI and XIII ones, and I love the novelty of them.
Plus Yoshida is friends with the Level-5 CEO guy (Akihiro Hino?), so it's really not the end of times or anything. He also plays the game, I think, but I've slept since that interview, so I could be wrong. >_>
But a lot of people actually really love it...
A lot of people in Japan are VERY excited about this event.
Gold Saucer was completely swarming with people!
So many people were losing connections.
I will gladly take cross-over events like this if it means that exclusive items aren't relegated to the cash shop in a subscription based game.
Isn't this pretty normal in Japanese online games? I recall there actually being a giant screen in the hub world in PSO2 that just plays commercials.
If you want to learn more about Yo-Kai watch you should watch the intro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_IXBklwka4
Japanese players: Hell yeah!
NA/EU: Oh hell no!
Yo-kai is really popular in Japan, and only recently hit the states and EU.
If we didn't get it, the threads would instead be you guys moaning about a JP only event, and other regions getting less content.
Get over it.
And, think of sponser deals like American Express this way: mainstream media and companies are now taking gaming seriously enough that paying for ads looks like a profitable venture. THAT IS A GOOD THING.
Well if it is advertising it fell on deaf ears for me, cause I will have have been the event but will never go investigate what "Yo-kai Watch" is.
I wonder what people's reaction would be if instead of Yokai Watch the event was Pokemon?
Ultimately, this is another cross promotion event. Judging by this: http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodest.../youkai-watch/ it's quite obvious SE is trying to appeal to Yokai fans to try FF14 and vice-versa.
I love chocolate in my peanut butter and peanut butter in my chocolate.
But I do not love pokemon, Yo-Kai watch or a likely to happen Disney event when the new kingdom hearts draws near, in my Final Fantasy.
Either SE isn't doing as well financially as they claim to be doing or someone wants more bonuses, cause we have not seen anything in the game indicative of a larger staff or this money being channeled to ffxiv.
In the end, people are running FATEs and filling empty zones, even if it's only going to last a week (or less) till the hardcore people grind it out and get them all. Then we'll see more "I'm disappointed because the zones are empty!" threads when it all dies down. Damned if they do, damned if they don't.
Cash shop sales went towards the EU datacenter, I'm pleased with the campaign because it's more money for the dev team that doesn't come from players forking over extra for mounts and glamours (plus we get an event from it, everyone wins)
Then there are things like upgrading the servers for new housing wards and the deep dungeon save data system, you start to see a lot of things that have been paid for if you look a little.
Personally I like this event as it gives you a lot of minions and glamour weapons for free.
If you don't like it just don't do it, I don't see the problem.

Have we been here before? Because I distinctly feel like we've been here before.
Leave my new minions and weapons alone, I know nothing about yokai watch but if you try to take them from me you risk losing a hand. I actually found the event amusing, with my character having a "o.o you're a what? Wtf, what? errr..?" Expression on her face every step of the way from the first cutscene with whisper to getting her first weapon
My god slayer is so confused XD and it's adorable.
A lot of minions tend to be rather cutesy already, so more aren't really a problem. And some of the weapons are nice enough, with none bad enough to be overly distracting. For me, it's really that ridiculous mount that totally ruins it for me. In another of these threads I likened it to a kiddie ride at an amusement park. Anytime I see one of those ghastly things, that's all I'll be able to think of it as. And with a lot of people using Mount Roulette, we're going to keep seeing that hideous thing around indefinitely, spoiling the game any time it appears.
I'd be a lot more upset if it were Pokemon, and precisely because it's better known. None of these minions or weapons is going to make me think of Yo-Kai Watch, since I'd never even heard of it until this event came up, and within FFXIV will remain the only place I've ever seen these figures. A Pikachu minion, on the other hand, would be recognizable enough to immediately make me think of Pokemon rather than FFXIV, which would make it far more immersion-breaking.
Honest and for true, I can not see SE including Disney characters in the crossover. I think there will be a crossover, but trying to make the iconic Goofy or Donald fit the aesthetic or worse come in all cartoony, seems like something square would avoid. Sora or other humanish characters I can see, but not the anthropomorphic animals.
