Another Book closes [SPOILER DISCUSSION]

So another story finally has the Book close in 3.X era. This short yet long lasting story that started in 2.0 about Edda as she fall into the darkness of despair after the death of her fiance and her party left her when each member could not play their role blaming only her since she was the healer.

Her Soul finally found salvation and put to rest with her fiance.

A rather nice ending after such a long and short tale of despair and insanity.

yet one story remain unanswered.....

What became of that Demon that took over Avere's Head? *Thunder sound effect*

So what do you think about the Tale of the Fallen Healer Edda?

Is is soemthing that maybe I udertood bit wrong. When we finaly beated her, and then spirit poped. She doesnt say that she doesnt she wanted to be good adventurer but after a dark figure she didnt remember a thing? Well im gonna check the cutscene again just in case.

Could be wrong.

My unanswered question is where she learned all of this magic. She said that she was returning home to start over when Avere died, then she came back able to summon voidsent! Somewhat dramatic change.

There's actually another book that closes in the Palace of the Dead...another Gridanian tragedy...

Floor 41+ spoilers:

Much later a single, solitary, Duskwight Lancer near the bottom. He seemed slightly tougher than the other enemies down there (at least for the early 40s), I only encountered one in a full clear, and more importantly: he speaks! Additionally, pretty much only voidsent appear around that level (manticores potentially notwithstanding) and his armor and face and hair are very familiar....

I know the first shot isn't very clear, but I was fighting you see, and I couldn't stop my party and go "wait! this could be loreportant!" I feel like the connection is definitely there, though.

It seemed like this still takes place canonically after Tam-Tara (Hard), while her mind was broken and her bodied injured from the fall some robed mage approached her with tales of more powerful void magick that could truly resurrect Avere, or something. Then we free what ever demonic influence the void/masked mage had over her and her "true" soul was able to thank us and peace out to the Aetherial Sea. I can't find where to rewatch the final cutscene of the Palace in the Unending Journey so I'm a little annoyed, but it definitely felt like they were stringing us along for further reveals/expansions. I'm not much for gambling but I'd definitely think an Avere rematch isn't out of the question--we need reasons to go back there, and find out who the hell is going out giving dark arts to every grieving widow of an abusive husband. With most things, especially voidal and summoning things, I'm always content to point my finger at the fingers of Zodiark, though how this furthers Lord Zodiark's revival I haven't the foggiest. It seems unusual/stupid, but like, the Ascians helped the Hand of the Alacran steal the Sultana's crown to ransom for the Trader's Spurn so like, wtf? We know their "O Mournful voice of creation!" bit from summoning Golems, but they teach mortals (ixali and hyuran thieves) to summon voidsent in the early early MSQ.

Also, why the hell do Gelmorrans have pomanders which transform you into a succubus/manticore? They're decidedly Gelmorran in design (per the Expeditionary) and I was content to write off the voidal presence in Gelmorran ruins to be "Edda did it" but this raises questions. Furthermore, why the hell did Avere lose his gauntlets and never bother to look for them in the morning? Like, no wonder you died man, you were missing a piece of armor. That's a serious VIT loss bro!

The Palace of the Dead appears to be a type of Limbo for people who died but could not move on to the after life due to their strong dark desires.

It is a place full of NPCs who died but we will not recongnize unless players remember who they are and where they are from and how did they die.

I actually notice a Sword crazy Swordman in the Palace of the Dead only to recongize him to be Leavold from the Gladiator storyline.

it is a bit tricky as it appears the encounters are random. However, it is a nice little hidden gem for those who actually remember these NPCs before they died.

I scanned the NPC listings for Palace of the Dead quickly and found this:

I wonder who else is in there... that's a nice eight, which would fit the 8 DoW/M classes at ARR launch

Encountered the Staff-spinning Adventurer - was a Lalafel, as I recall.

Didn't think anything of it, except that it was odd that there would be an enemy that was not beast nor voidsent...and noticed that he said something like "Where am I? Where is everyone?" when we defeated him.

Floor 100 should have us fight Teledji Adeledji.

I've found the Roughspun Ruffian. Think he was a hyur acranist of some sort. At least he had a book. I didn't realize he could be an NPC until I saw this thread. Anyone have any idea who he might be?

Given I'm going at it solo (only 1-10 done) to be able to call myself a Legendary Dork Dark Knight with some merit and simultaneously trying to finish my Guillotine of the Tyrant (2 infusions a day, almost 3/4 there), I've not gotten that far. However if he had a dark skin tone... Tristan from the SMN 30-50 line?

I have a theory, when you exit floor 30 Edda is shown behind you smiling crazy and all, after that the next 20 floors have the same type of layout and all enemies change name from palace something to nightmare something and they are either undeads, phantoms or voidsents also you don't get a cutscene at all on floor 40, so I wonder if those 20 floors are actually just a nightmare dimension that Edda or someone else created and trapped us, or just a nod to bloodborne

Makes me think that she was brainwashed to go down the path she did. Would also explain how she got the knowledge needed to pull off what she has done. Hell she could of been used to summon the palace of the dead abusing her desire to reunite with Avere.

The place makes for the perfect adventurer trap, imagine all those adventurers brought back as undead slaves that can be remade endlessly and still possess the skills they had in life. An unbeatable army that adds to its ranks with every enemy slain.

I'm really happy that it ended quite well (depending the circumstances that is...) and it was a valuable lessons that the happy party rpg life doesn't always go well if you're not the main character (demn plotarmour).

One thing struck me as odd though. She actually named a robed man made her go mad (unless I misread it?). I wonder if that was all an Ascien's work...
Or, maybe that mad jester from Amdapor Keep will have a return in later floors? (it's in the same zone basically). Although he reappeared in Wiping City alongside Diabolos...

I also wonder if Palace of the dead will turn into a boss gauntlet later on - would be fun.

I believe I've identified all 8 of the NPCs, but I didn't see Leavold...

The Flame still puzzles me. He's got the same face / outfit as a dozen throwaway NPCs, but his last words reference two NPCs that were never in A Realm Reborn. Those are two Flames assigned to Jagged Crest Cave for the assault on Castrum Novum during United We Stand. I think he was a member of Flame Commander Jakys Ryder's unit, which perished in the Battle of Cartenau (unless this guy survived his two comrades and made it to A Realm Reborn).

Anybody got an idea for a name?

As of now I've encountered a lost lala "staff-spinning adventurer" and a roe pirate "frenzied freebooter". Are they from other quests? Haven't seen the lancer quest duskwight

I posted a write-up on the backstories of those that have been identified here, though we're all still trying to identify the Immortal Flame, lol.

Do you happen to have a picture of Flame Commander Ryder? Closer inspection revealed that the currently unidentified Flame does, in fact, have what Midlanders typically try to pass off as a beard, but not remembering what the original NPC looks like, it may not actually matter.

EDIT: Scratch that, they look nothing alike, looking at the pictures in the comments. For one thing, the ages are completely wrong. The dialogue seems to fit, so maybe it's just a production error?

Yeah, unfortunately Mad Snake had the Baderon-Midlander face with like, an actual beard and looking like he's gotten past the ripe old Midlander age of 20-something. At least, it's a beard and mustache by my standards. It would be really awesome if it was him, but I'd be so disappointed that they included him and then messed up his model. He's also bald and didn't wear a helmet.

Either way, the Immortal Flame looks way too young and he'd be our ONLY non 2.0 character in the Palace, but these weird exceptions do exist because Foulques dies way later than the others. (The rest all die BEFORE "The [city] Envoy," and Foulques should die after; 2.0 Lv17 vs 2.0 Lv30)

Alternately, and this explains everything, the Palace of the Dead operates on rules similar to the Egyptian afterlife (or the Star Wars classic trilogy remasters), in which all who dwell there are as they were in their prime (around age 20, which also means those who die young age forward). So it is Mad Snake, but he's younger because real-world rules need not apply.

If nothing else, we now know why the place is called the Palace of the Dead, filled as it is with so many things that shouldn't be alive.

My brain has also jumped to wondering whether the "robed figure" is a named or lesser ascian, because that it would be an ascian is something I'm presuming is a given.
If not, that's one really good red herring to lay down...

He might be nameless, one of the victims from the Ifrit quest possibly?

Wouldn't it be possible for someone like our friend Archbishop Thordan to appear in the Palace? Even tempered are not safe from those halls.

I feel really bad for Foulques, being a restless soul , trapped in that palace and unable to pass on

Could the immortal flame be Flame Sergeant Dalvag, as he was before dying?

Very unlikely. Dalvag was a Highlander male stationed at the Halatali aetherial gate in 1.0; our Immortal Flame is decidedly Midlander. Additionally, the names of the soldiers the Immortal Flame calls out are of those who died in the Calamity--Dalvag died after the Calamity according to the hunter-scholar, during the Garlean invasion of Northern Thanalan (probably when they established Castrum Meridianum).

Off-screen and very quiet-like, but yes. Fairly certain you have to talk to Alianne outside of Copperbell Mines when you first arrive to learn this information.

I'm not too sure how I feel about how this story ended. It was a fine ending just not what I expected. I was expecting Edda to be the ruler or this place, and to, still be crazy, but to acknowledge that she is dead, and "protect" those who have died, so that they may find peace, or eternal agony. She gained power through death and is angered that someone from the living world has invaded he new sanctuary. I was more hoping for it being a story of her finding peace with a new calling, not so much as we save her again. But the story wasn't bad, regardless.

Waittttttttttttttttttttt wait Edda didn't really summoned Avvrie's soul back into his head? It was just a void sent? Poor Edda I think we should find the guy who manipulated him and curb stomp him for ruining her love story" grabs the mob pitch forks and torches" Also what if it was just that Edda's desire to have Avvire back in a body somehow summoned the palace and all the poor souls inside?

For all the confusion about the Imortal Flame not looking like whot it would seem to be, it's worth noting that the patchnites lists this under known issues: "An issue in the Palace of the Dead wherein graphics for the enemy Immortal Flame do not display correctly."

Will Occam's merciless Razor strike again?

I'm definitely getting a Bloodborne vibe from floors 31-50. The fact that the names change from "Palace" to "Nightmare" and its almost all Voidsent enemies...

I'll have to pay closer attention to the floor 30 clear cutscene when I run this on my alt (eventually), but I wonder if there's some sort of hint that something else has happened (AKA, being dragged into this nightmare realm)


Wonder just how dark the next 50 floors are going to be, and who we'll find lurking below...

HOW DID WE MISS THIS IN ALL OUR SCOURING

Finally finished it; got fed up dying to Rapture from the Slimes while soloing and just did matched party.

Seems like some kind of artificial purgatory. Edda mentions a robed figure after her defeat, meaning... well, I'm not saying it's Ascians, but it's Ascians. Anyway, the multitude of other dead NPCs suggests it's either Limbo or Purgatory, but if it's artificial I'm not really sure how or why it's there. If it's Ascians (which it is), it's likely just a trap to lure us in and kill us. Nice to see a change from Lahabrea's "Step 1: Teach mortals to summon Primals. Step 2: ??? Step 3: Chaos!" MO.

Glad Edda was finally, truly laid to rest. Now, for the Floor 100 boss do they want to give us some catharsis and let us kill Teledji with our own two hands, or twist the knife and makes us fight Haurchefant...?
