What about a JPN-NA thoughts corner?

As a person who has been playing this game for a few months now, I try to glean any and all information from forums on my off time. Once in a while, I see a post wondering how the Japanese community feels about a particular aspect or issue of the game and maybe its vice-versa for the other side. My idea is how about a monthly newsletter type thread where an appointed forumer from each side picks the top 5 most talked about issues of the game of their community and presents it to the other. The forumers of each side would most probably have to be bilingual for this to work

What do you guys think?

Re: about Japanese criticism of the game earlier. I went through 2ch for a while and found a good summary of complaints from their PoV of things, I'll do my best to translate up to 63. Please note my Japanese is pretty basic, I've done QA assistance work with experienced translators before but my skills are based on finding information and rephrasing. I'm subbing out gisgis with salt where it comes up because the terms are more or less the same in context to the game. I'm leaving the ones I don't know how to approach in Japanese. Here's an original copy of the list. Please note, I do not agree with all of these ^ ^u don't shoot the messenger


1. The promotional materials and ads were misleading
2. The back of the PS3 version case was originally misleading

I'm not against this, I am quite curious about what the JP forums discuss and how they feel about certain balance issues or certain classes and google translate isn't exactly the most reliable source of translation.

Wouldn't be the first time EU is left out.

Just kidding, you probably didn't mean it that way. :P Sounds like an interesting idea. Although it might be difficult to figure out which topics are most talked about on the English forums because topics are often spread out into several threads.

I think EU is forgotten becuase of the fact most are happy to speak English, so their opinions tend to blend with NA's. So, perhaps a better method would be comparing English and Japanese speaking parts of the fanbase.

I can read Japanese and English, but I don't post in Japanese forums because I use Japanese all day every day and I am tired of it, to tell you the truth.
I try to brush up on my English skills, so I write in English forums.

And to tell you the truth, it takes a lot of time to read both forums.

A quick summary of what I have seen:
People on JP servers also want GC removed from Frontlines.
Some people want the Contents Finder (CF. In English Duty Finder) to be separated by "already cleared" and "not cleared yet".
A thread about how it's difficult to get people to do Bahamut raid
There is one thread (508 pages now) just for listing things you want added to the game.
There is a thread about adding a "password" feature to Party Finder listings, so you can only join a party if you know the password. I guess this is to let people from other servers join your party if Party Finder becomes cross-server.
A thread about changing the effect of Astrologians Benefic. (I don't play AST, so I don't really understand what that skill does.)
There is a thread to debate problems with Dark Knights and propose changes to that class.
I've seen at least 2 threads asking for more severe penalties on people leaving a dungeon halfway through.

Just like in the English forums, many people feel differently about a lot of things.

There are some major differences I've noticed.
In JP forums, people tend to continue to write in one thread for along time. Even over years. It doesn't seem like people create 3, 4, or 5 threads about the same topic.

People don't seem to be complaining about quality of players or problems with groups in Contents Finder. (Unlike the long thread about Tales of the Duty Finder on the ENglish forums.) This is because, in general, Japanese put the needs of the group over the needs of the individual. In Japanese society, we think "Is what I want to do going to inconvenience other people". If so, we do not do that. (It is important not to cause trouble for others. It's basic manners and cornerstone of living on crowded a small island nation. Of course people want harmony. But more importantly, we need harmony and cooperation to live together)
But of course, there are some people who do not care. Like the ones who leave parties halfway through.

No threads about improving the community or complaining about hunts, that I could find at least. However, there are many, many threads like this on English forums.
Haven't seen any threads complaining about mentors.

But, like I said, some threads are 300 - 500 pages long and are years old I haven't read everything, and I won't. I don't know everything what is talked about in JP forums.

I think they are referring to Benefic's insta-cast Benefic 2 proc which generally messes with your precast timing of Benefic 2 (like say before a tank buster).

It says "benefic". I don't even know what aspected benefic is because I've never played AST.
Basically, the thread is about how there is 15% chance the next benefic can be cast instantly.
The poster says this is in the way, and should be changed.
The reason is that sometimes they don't notice the proc.
Then cast too early and heal before the tank takes damage.
Then after they waste the cast, the tank takes damage.
But now, there is a cooldown, so they need to wait to heal the tank again.

Astro has stances that modify aspected spells. For instance one will add regen to aspected benefic.

- Exploring vase zones with danger. (That actually look good, like ARR zones, not like Heavenward zones with lack of detail everywhere)

- Change all 4man raids to 5man raids. (1tank,1healer,2dps, 1support/dps) (DPS spots fill up faster then tank or healers. Also will allow you guys to create more interesting fights then with just the bare mim 4 party setup.)
- Add no flying in future expansions. But also have the zone designed so ease of traveling around like with the ARR zones. (This will make zones larger because lack of movement speed/allowing creators to make more detailed areas without creating huge zones where graphics has to display a bunch of stuff away from the player.) (Basically more smaller zones, But still make the region quite large.)
- Make every patch a catch up patch & a main patch. (Nerfing old content and adding new bis gear, instead of bis gear every 6 months.)
- Mix old materials & new materials into new recipes, allowing older items to still be useful and making it easier for newer players to make gil on a patch.
- Only release new Dungeons. (No longer create Hard mode dungeons.)
- Make relics require alot of gil/player help to finish. Allow all players to farm currency and able to sell it to players grinding out for relic.
- Make Relics best in slot for every patch till next expansion where they need to do a hard quest to upgrade it again.
- Add no shortcuts to relic, but you can increase the currency that drops.
- Add a item reward system to achievement score for ARR & Heavensward & 4.0. (This will cause more players to do different content in the game to obtain these rewards.)
- Make crafting more useful.
- Change the DoL stat caps/gathering caps. Give us a better benefit for going beyond the requirement for these gathering points.
- Keep the item level requirement for duty finder only but remove the need for having it overall. (Lower item level gear could have better stats for your build.)
- Bring back a way to change your Job/Class within a dungeon like with 1.0 dungeons. (Will cause more players to level more jobs & learn different jobs.)
- Add in awesome Jobs. Samurai, Blue Mage, Thief, Red Mage, Gunblade Job/Garlean Based Class. Make sure the Jobs are fun to play at/really useful in all aspects.
- Fix the mass issue with lots of gil on players. (Make gil more useful.)
- Give everyone there own housing zone and lessen the need for housing wards.
- Make Housing useful, not just as a vanity item.
- Add Open world dungeons/caverns.
- Add no more basic solo quests. Start creating the quests that need Chocobo Companion/Up to 2-3 players.
- Make other cities like Grindana & Uldah easier to reach the market board. (Add Market Boards to the same zone as the Aethright to attract traffic to those zones.)
- Remove Grand Company Grouping in frontlines, instead just make it A/B/C groups.
- Allow PvP stat to boost only PvP actions and be able to use them in frontlines.
- Expand the PvP leveling rank system by adding in different stats & traits.
- Add in different Materia & don't lower stat values on gear just because they can attach materia.
- Have a new round/season of the feast to start up again as soon as its over. (Keeping the content from dying out once a feast season is over.)
- Have top Feast equipment to give best item level/on pare with the top sets of the current patch.
- Remove the current raid system you guys have and just focus on primal fights because even the raids themselves are just boss fights.
- Start making the main story fights a bit harder so players learn how to play the game correctly. (Add in a extra mechanic or one attack do the same thing as it does in the extreme version so they are more ready for the extreme version of the fight.)
- Add a new mode of transportation in 4.0. (Boats/Water mount)
- Make sure dungeons from the outside in the world map value to size to the ideal size of the dungeon. Also make sure the dungeon is designed the same way as it looks from the outside.
- Less cash shop stuff like the Red & White magitek mounts and the Red Zu. Add stuff in there that we actually wanna buy/worth the asking price.
- No jump potion/content skip. (If you do add ONE at some point you gotta give it to everyone that owns ARR regardless if they are new or not to raise any one class to 60 only but still have them do all the content in the game for them to reach that lv60 point & not allow them to unsync dungeons so they can solo it by themselves until they complete it once as the required level. Also leave it out of the cash shop or you will ruin this game.)
- Add in new content but only release it when you know its actually complex/dynamic enough where players can enjoy it over and over and do many different things and not have stuff be broken at release.
- Improve old content where they have a purpose/are more enjoyable.
- Improve the Chocobo Companion system where we can Gambit there actions and give them way more skills.
- Allow us to Que for a duty with a chocobo companion.
- Remove the need to build cities every patch, your wasting development having to replace/rebuild every patch.
- Add less seasonal events in a year but improve the events/quests. (New Year/Little Ladies day/Easter/Gold Saucer need to go. Put more dev time in other content/events.)
- Add in a new race that doesn't look like a human. Lizard Race.
- Add in Viera. (A lot of people want it.)
- Add in endgame content related to the main story. (Not a side story quest not really related to the main story.)
- Open World Primals. (All Primals added into the game. Change the weather of the region/zone when they are spawned.)
- Hamlet style content where DoL & DoH can be used in combat/content. (Good replacement for Red scripes)
- Those DoH skills/job stones need be more useful.
- Add more random elements into crafting & fixing the HQ % to where it makes more sense.
- Make Fishing more useful as a DoL. Give more fish a purpose. Don't just keep adding in useless fish.
- Don't add anymore beastmen dallies. We already have too many of the same content. Add something completely new.
- Add in other rewards players will go after instead of minions & mounts. Its getting old.
- Stop copying the same rewards and giving them a new skin/color swaps. (ADS balls, Zu mounts, White Fat chocobo, Beastmen dallies minions etc.)
- Add in a triangle arena and a multi floor arena like what we had in to kill a raven.
- Add in new PvP rules. Like King of the hill.
- Remove the ability to choose frontlines & instead have it like cycle randomly to different arenas so older & newer content never gets stale or dies out.
- Slow down the combat a little bit when your adding in more actions into the game. (Balance the GCD a bit more)
- Magitek Companion/Attachment, usefulness in 5.0.
- Being able to use retainers on the open world.
- Have Airships take you to special endgame areas, with a purpose.
- Frontlines needs to be more dynamic with options on the field.
- Have Brass Seals give armor & used for relic quest line. Also be able to trade them.
- Balance out desysthing where we can level it up without having to buy 500k equips.
- Don't nerf vanity items just because more people want them. There is a market there and if you nerf it noone cares about showing off the $$$ vanity item.
- Make Battle & Grand Company Leves important/more rewarding then what they are. (Players don't use them. Only on DoH & DoL leves. Fates & dungeons are faster exp.)
- Add all rewards at the end of a dungeon. So players don't get the item and leave in a middle of a dungeon.
- Allow players to use large amounts of tokens to buy mounts that drop from primals. (80-100 tokens would be realistic to ask for it.)
- Adding ways toget gil out of the hands of players. Hence adding shops that sell items for a recipe that no other way to obtain.
- Epic storyline/theme with endgame.
- No more Normal mode versions of Endgame.
- Remove sub rewards. (Its getting quite large for new players to meet these requirements and there is no way these players would be able to catch up. Before it was every month to 3 months was fine, but now you need to stay subbed for a year to meet each reward now. Its a joke.)
- Have a option to still play the game till your sub is up without having to cancel it your account on the last day before getting charged for the next month. (Seems shady, didn't have this issue with XI.)
- Make it easier to have steam versions of the game & still be able to use your game or upgrade it to the next expansion without steam needed.
- Add a que for your character if that character wants to move to another server that's full.
- Allow players use multiple kinds of meds without sharing the same global timer. (Able to use HP potions & Dex Potions together) (Able to use High Ethers & Int Potions together)
- Make the market board a blind auction house. (To stop undercutting of prices.)

These are what players have been asking for sometime or have been expecting since 2.0 was being built. Also a lot of balancing issues/need purpose needs to be done.

Secondly, sounds like 95% percent of the stuff they want correlates with stuff we want. Which is great!

I suppose what many of us want to know is have reps/devs responded to the similar threads that the JP forums have created? If so, what have they said? Since they can speak directly to them without having to translate.

Man, America sucks. :(

To clarify, I envy that island mentality. I lived for a few years in a small, remote town near Yosemite and life was like that. I miss it!

Asp. Benefic is the AST's version of WHM's Regen (under Diurnal Sect) and SCH's Adloquium (under Nocturnal Sect), respectively.

I also agree with the issue about the Benefic trait/proc. At least WHM's Cure II proc is a free heal with the cast time intact, so you can still time your precasts as normal with the benefit of no MP cost.

THanks for the translations, it is nice to know there are so many similar desires.

The Benefic II quirk is something I really haven't experienced as I've not done enough harder content in which it's an issue. That said, it IS rather annoying. To note, AST already have an instant-heal skill in Luminferous Aether.

I'm guessing it's a leftover from AST's initial stat spread to give them a boost skill that allowed them to keep their tank up, as AST's core concept was a support/heal with slightly less potent cures to balance the card access. That clearly didn't work as most AST (save for a few killer raiders that managed and/or had the best gear) just couldn't compensate or were victim to bad RNG, so the job got major buffs early on to balance it.

No longer dependant on abusing every instant heal we can to scrape by, it's posing a problem.

As a solution, perhaps it could instead turn your next heal into a crit? It would help Nocturnal's Aspected Benefic a HUGE deal, a give us more reason to choose Noct in solo heal situations.

Played on different servers both Japanese and US. I can say that clearing old content in duty finder (EX raids) was easy when I was progressing through 2.0 on JP servers. Farming Light for zodiac weapons with EX raids in duty finder was a guaranteed clear each time on JP servers. When I moved to the US I was shocked how bad EX raid runs were in duty finder. It was pretty much a 100% wipe party in duty finder. I've seen bad players on both sides. Even at 60 I've encountered DPS players who didn't know their rotations and had to be carried on JP and US servers alike. I like JP servers more though because duty finder runs are a lot quicker and smoother.

In general, the development team seems to respond much more to posts on the JP forums. But keep in mind, many threads active even now started 1 or 2 years ago and are long and have many ideas, so the development team sometimes responds to just 1 idea.

Let's see.
Some people asked for stone pavement and pools for houses. The dev team said they are considering it.

The dev team is working on developing a way to kick players who go AFK in PvP, because currently the message "player's can't be kicked during battle" message appears.

They are considering about lowering points required to win Fields of Glory and also increase HP of ice.

They are considering what to do about AST Benefic, if anything.

They are considering about using password feature for cross-server Party Finder recruiting. So people can recruit on SNS.

But like usual, the dev team usually says "Thank you for your suggestion. We'll pass it on to the dev team for considering". Like this.

Yes, but some people don't like it because they feel they cannot speak their true feelings, because they mind offend / cause trouble for the other person.
So people are very agreeable on the surface, but under the surface they are not.

When I lived in the U.S., many people said exactly how they feel. I think it's similar in the game too. Some people think it's a good thing to be able to do it. But others think it's not good because it makes other people uncomfortable.

I think it depends on personal preference.

To clarify: I don't know which is "better". They are just different ways of dealing with something.

That's pretty much my personality, unless I'm with friends. I'll offer helpful advice at times -- like if someone is just messing up on a mechanic -- but if it's clear that someone is just not a gifted player, then I don't see any point in making the person feel bad.

Id like the JP side to see how much RMT spam we get, so that SE might do something other than ignore the NA side of this.
I moved to Levi about 3 months ago and my blist is ONLY filled with RMT spammers and its past 150+ blocks

None. On Carbuncle at least.

And never heard of any on other JPDC servers either.
Never heard of anyone even mentioned or talk about RMT once.
When I played WoW on U.S. server, there was so much RMT. It was hard to believe.

Thank you. I spent most of my childhood in an English-speaking country. But now I live in Japan, so I don't have much opportunity to speak with native speakers. This is one reason I come to English forums.

To keep you up to date on the JP community response to Deep Dungeon:
The General Discussion section has no new threads regarding Deep Dungeon. (Unlike 3 pages on NA forums.)
The Dungeons section has about 4 threads about Deep Dungeon.
One thread is about "Things you'd like to see added to Deep Dungeon". Things include "warp traps", "pitfalls", "rooms with different light levels", "Traps which lower your arm / armor rating (has 1 like)", "one giant room filled with monsters" and so on.
One thread is just "About Deep dungeon". Started on the 24th. Already 78 pages long.
Another thread is about being able to use "job skills" even though you go into deep dungeon as a "class". For example, joining as an "Archer" and can't use "Bard" skills.

There was another thread about EDF players queuing with Japanese Language for Deep Dungeon, even though they can't understand Japanese. Many people were complaining about it.
Because another thread already existed for that topic, an administrator closed it and directed people to continue in the original thread.
So the discussion is continuing there.
Even though I can speak both to a degree, I experienced this too. In my 3-person party, we get 1 E player who cannot speak Japanese. My 2 teammates cannot speak English. We queued as Japanese only, yet 4th person only speak English. (And he talked so much.) It's frustrating for my two team members. DD has little time to complete, so it's a waste to translate what they say.
Many J players in the thread have stronger things to say about the issue though.

The original looks a fair bit more ambitious (goal-wise, not necessarily mechanically) than what we ended up with, even if its goals were rather open-ended (or not necessarily limited to the new content medium being suggested).

I'm on a resurrection roll today but I promise this is the last one (for now, muwahahaha).

Actually the reason why I revived thia thread is because I was curious as to what is jpn's thoughts and feelings overall to the coming of Stormblood as well as what is currently trending over there.

I tried running it through Google translate. I got the impression they don't care so much about the 280 weapon but I don't think they like the mindless fate-spam either.

They do care about both the weapon invalidating a 9 day old anima stage + raid weapon and how bad the rework was, you will see the majority of the replies are against and very little in favor http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...%83%AC/page151

Note: like that one person said earlier the JP community generally sticks to 1 thread per content and keeps using it for years even if the topic slightly changed, so the first ~146 pages predate current diadem.

It's a bit hard to scout the whole JP forums to check what's up over there since they don't use General Discussion as "put everything here", they use every single individual forum, this long list http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/f...English-Forums, and since they use single threads it's hard to know how far into the thread you have to go to see what's new

Re: about Japanese criticism of the game earlier. I went through 2ch for a while and found a good summary of complaints from their PoV of things, I'll do my best to translate up to 63. Please note my Japanese is pretty basic, I've done QA assistance work with experienced translators before but my skills are based on finding information and rephrasing. I'm subbing out gisgis with salt where it comes up because the terms are more or less the same in context to the game. I'm leaving the ones I don't know how to approach in Japanese. Here's an original copy of the list. Please note, I do not agree with all of these ^ ^u don't shoot the messenger


1. The promotional materials and ads were misleading
2. The back of the PS3 version case was originally misleading
3. FFなのにWoWとRIFTを何の工夫もせず上辺だけ劣化パクリ&改悪問題
4. The battles are boring as a beginner.
5. The eSports elements that they try to push aren't acceptable in Japan

Tell you what, I play in a japanese Datacenter, because I'm in Asia, and it really feels like all the drama of I read about and hear about in podcasts is just not a major thing here.

I think it's interesting a lot of similar points come up, it's not as two worlds as sometimes we may believe, also just wanted to add that the whole 2ch anon board thing Texa went out of their way to read was because I suggested Japanese would be more likely to post issues on an anon board and unlike the English forum which is more Wild West the Japanese forum would be more concerned about face (as that face is also used in game, no face in an anon place :P).

So we can see with those together what is more likely representive of the whole, just be careful not to view one alone lol. At least in comparison to our side, which again I think we'd be more open to make buzz threads- the pro and con of a strong self/high diversity vs strong we/localized community. It pleases me greatly to see housing issues though lol. Im evil I know XD.

Wonder if anyone would be willing to do a hot topic on the forum letter as suggested by OP. If not I guess people can update this thread occasionally ? My fear is someone spends a lot of time and skill in making a news letter but the English forums moves so fast the effort doesn't feel worth it. With such a high speed being FotM can be useful. Still I find the info very interesting especially as they have a more direct line to the devs, unless Yoshida does actually frequently read our forums - I can tell his listening is pretty good as he starts to respond sometimes before his translator stops him to translate (its good for safety in answering but shows he's getting pretty good at it).

Thanks for the translations...its very interesting to see their pov. It nearly echos what my bf, friends and I have been saying for the longest time.

I live in Japan and i love the Japanese forum so much better than the the English version. 1 because people care more about each other in that forum they make one thread and you wont see the same type of thread recreated again and again in different ways. its the main reason why the dev team reply more often to the Japanese forum.

I appreciate the hell out of this thread and how civil almost everyone has been. I think it should stay alive for the sake of new changes and story content on the horizon. I also wish some issues were contained in a looooong thread and just search to see if a question has been brought up. Even on 4chan of all places if there's a thread up on a subject, and mods are actually awake, the fat will be trimmed in favor of whatever has the most meat.

I really appreciate the effort you put into translating Texa. I'm on my phone now so I can't do much but what I will do is use your post to edit my first one so everyone can see and keep it on a monthly/new patch theme.

Here's another really detailed write up on the Japanese communities thoughts of the game, breaking down different features into pros, cons, and mixed. Honestly most of it is about the same as what you'd see here. But it's still interesting to see it from them, helps reaffirm we're all in this together.

@wiki has always been my fav for trying to find civil and grounded criticism for jrpgs in the past. 2ch is more on like the 4chan end of things, they are very honest but the format of the place can encourage excessive negativity. They're all equally valid in different ways, I'm just explaining for anyone browsing this that haven't lurked those places before.
