Did this happen every time, or only some times?
If it did, did anything show up as being "damaged" when you failed? In my experience post-patch, when I have a small and/or depleting-more-than-normal remainder bar, it's because I've found a rare item like a gemstone.
Otherwise, if you're depleting a lot, ensure that ALL your gear is adding +gathering/output/perception and favors MIN/DoL, try to have +MND and +VIT items and traits, etc. You should have no problem with grade II at L14.
Hmm actually the cause could be damaged and low level gear, i'll repair it and see what happens
Hey Muscles ^^. Volt had a great summary of what you should be looking out for. For grinding purposes any optimally ranked gear that favors MIN/DoL will be good enough for you to XP on. Below are the sweetspots for Camp Skull Valley. In the off-chance that you are hitting a gemstone every time, try to set your depth to Iron Ore or Alumen for grinding purposes. Especially alumen since it can be dug with one hit. Another tip is that alumen can be found at ~50% on the mini-game. Hope this helps!
Camp Skull Valley (Sweet Spots)
-Iron Ore (-2)
-Sunrise Tellin (4)
-Alumen (-1)
-Raw Lapis Lazuli (2)
-Raw Fluorite (3)
Certain items have smaller starting remainder bars than others. Often times you can use the size of the remainder bar to know in advance what item you are about to get.
i had this when i first started mining there. it is rare items gem stones. i spoke to a experienced miner and this is the tip i got that works almost every time : when you bar is so small it is a rare item, think of your target as percentages (the round meter that you press on to strike) so the outside is 100 percent and the middle is 0percent, to mine the rare items you want to strike at about 25 percent. and the ore and alumin is at 75 percent.
i hope that is clear and you understand what i mean. once i got it i hardly ever miss anything
not true about where you go for each of those items grandm.
check my guide with a bit more detail on where items are likely to be and what is likely to be there from the remainder bar.

Usually when I mine, if it's the Raw Gems stuff, the starting remainder bar is below half. I can't remember about Iron Ore though.
I agree with the general concensus here, It either the rarer of the ares avaliable in the region or a rare gem.
It is always determinable what item exactly it is using the new system.
Looking at the remainder bar, when it is closest to the beginning of the word "Approach" located beneath it(the 'p' iirc, it will always be a raw gemstone.
When it is at the 'ac', it will be the rarer ore/second rarest to gemstones.
When it is at the 'h', it will be the common ore.
[[[ There is a very, very slight difference between the two, often difficult to distinguish outright ]]]
When it is just past the end of the word, it will be the lowest item.
When it is almost full/most past the word, it is the "____ quality _____ ore" for the leve at that camp.
Using this information, plus sweetspots, with a little trial and error, you will find the exact spot every item needs to be hit, at what depth, first swing, every time. (unless it's much higher in rank of a gather than you, in such cases, two) {Note that, though a single item may appear in multiple regions, the "strike" location for said item will be different depending on where you're gathering it.}
Good luck out there!
I'm lv.25 right now and decided to move to Grade 4 spots by doing leves.
I'm struggling with items positioning everytime. Alumen supposed to be around 50%, but for me it is random. Sometimes it is 50%, sometimes it is at the very beginning of the Strike gauge and sometimes it's on 100%.
Same thing is with all items. Catalysts, ores, gems also are in random places.
When i was grinding on Grade 2, I was 100% accurate with placement of the items. Now it is wheel of fortune.
I doubt it is because of my low level. I moved to Grade 2 spots as soon as I could get lv.20 leves and haven't any issuses with item positioning. I even wrote an short guide for my LS mates based on my experience on Grade 2 spots.
-EDIT-
Seems like level had some influence on this. When I dinged 26 i was able to separate all items from the mining spot. Writing another mini guide for my LS mates for G4 sport :)
In order for the item to be in the exact same spot every time level and one of your class' associated stats must be at a certain number or higher.
Doing Grade4 at Lv25 wouldn't surprise me that you weren't at that point yet.
Where did I get that information you ask? Good question; I seem to remember it being in some patch notes at some point.
Update: Found it. 1.17 Patch Notes
and before someone accuses that of meaning the other type of sweet spot, I will point you to where it says the 'approach phase' (when you are striking the ore, below the circle, it says approach).Quote:
[dev1039] When the three below conditions are met in regards to the grade and difficulty of a gathering attempt, the "sweet spot" of the approach phase will be in a fixed location.
1. Class rank
2. Values of VIT for miners, STR for botanists, and DEX for fishers
3. Bait and lures (for fishing only)
ex.) At a certain grade and difficulty, having the appropriate rank, DEX value, and bait/lure will ensure that jigging the rod precisely in the middle will result in a black eel hit.
Not entirely agree with you.
For example Iron Ore. It requires much more power to dig it then Brimstone, but it pops with less reminder bar then Brimstone.
But your theory applies to gems.

Very often the rarer the item is the lower the starting remainder.
