On AST cards, AOE vs others

Am I missing something on PVE AST while leveling it again? I've had people commenting on how I rarely/never use AOE now.

I don't use AOE Balance/Arrow in leveling dungeons because of
* Reduced potency
* Little things like getting it up BEFORE SMN applies buffs, or all it does it buff Ruin
* It's easy to get something like Enhanced Balance on one DPS and regular Arrow on the other for trash pulls
* My/the tank's speed/damage doesn't have as much of an impact, especially with only a 5% increase

I'd see the benefit in something like AOE Balance in a raid, where it's affecting four DPS, two tanks, and potentially two Cleric Stance healers, but not Stone Vigil.

Expanded royal road in 4 man content is no where as near as powerful as it is in 8 man content. Also, the cards that you royal road to aoe (spire and ewer) can be more powerful if used for MP/TP restoration in 4 man content rather than royal road. Ewer is good to help your gravity spam going, spire is useful for TP users aoe dps in pulls.

You are doing it correctly as far as i am concerned.

Give the best aoe dps enhanced/extended arrow/balance for mob pulls.
Give the best single target dps enhanced/extended arrow/balance for bosses.

Also if you have one good dps and one bad dps (or both bad dps) in DF, aoe cards are an utter waste.

I also don't typically Spread buffs in 4man content, at least I don't plan to. But my overall thought process is to put out as many useful buffs as possible, so if the stars line up then I won't hang onto a buff for very long in the hopes of making it extended or enhanced when Spread is available. The sooner you use it the sooner you get another to use and the more support you've offered to the party overall.

I pretty much never use a card on myself unless I've died recently or messed up my MP management. Even multiple raises don't usually warrant it.

You're pretty much correct. The exception is if you yourself are doing lots of damage in the dungeon. In which case AE is much better, assuming that you don't have to throw away a card to do it As you started to get at, the absolute most important part of card optimization is throwing away as few cards as possible and keeping your card draw on cooldown. And most certainly passing your cards to people/situations that need them.

Expanded and Extended royal road lose part of their power on 4-man dungeons. For these kind of content raw cards tend to be more effective since you'll be facing mini encounters multiple times, even Spire is really strong if you deliver it to a TP class that is dealing AoEs that cost a large amount of TP. Using cards on yourself is recommended if you're doing a good amount of damage. Specially Balance on big pulls since Gravity spam can be quite stronger than a lot of other DPS jobs' aoes. Your reasoning is really good, keep doing a good work!

I completely disagree with those that argue against using AOE buffs in 4 man content. You should never be out of MP even if you are doing dps and it is very rare for any TP users to run out in 4 man content. I Royal Road Spire/Ewer every single time. I use AOE buffs as an opportunity to add more dps myself also, I typically will switch to Cleric Stance, hit Lightspeed, and throw out as many Gravity's/ Malefic II's as possible. I also try to use Celestial Opposition every time I am able with my AOE buffs, so now you have a buff that's 50% as strong, but on 4x as many people for a longer duration- I fail to see how that is not worth it. Also if you consider there's no way to know which of your damage dealers in a DF group is doing more damage, and therefore there is no way to optimize buffing the dps with single target buffs, it makes a lot of sense to buff everyone.

Edit- Just to add I also use single target buffs frequently- I just also think that AOE buffing is useful and worth it. It all just depends on what is drawn.

Also if you never get to the stage in 4 man content where ewer is beneficial to yourself, you are not pushing your dps or doing it wrong.

Ooh lala, I would recommend against using light speed to dps when you spread balance/arrow. Light speed reduces the potency of dps skills but does not change the GCD at all. So you are actually losing dps from light speed and not really pumping them out faster.

I guess I did not realize this regarding Malefic II- I use gravity more frequently in dungeons so I did not give it enough thought, however, it is still worth using lightspeed to spam Gravity- in the 10 second window of lightspeed you can spam 4 Gravity's instead of only 3 in a normal 10 second window- those 4 gravity's even reduced at 25% are still (just slightly) more dps than 3 without lightspeed- but you have saved a ton of MP. If you aren't using lightspeed for anything else why would you not do it?

Personally I use Lightspeed to put Stoneskin on everyone between pulls whenever it's ready. Anyway you should use Enhanced Balance on your best Damage Dealer because that 15% gives more overall DPS than Expanded Balance.

No its not. You get no extra casts of anything form lightspeed except in very niche circumstances. Lightspeed frontloads anything thats cast but still triggers the global cooldown, so there are no extra casts you get. The very very very very niche circumstance where you do get the extra cast of gravity off is if the mobs would die as the 4th gravity hits, however this is null and void since it takes that 4 th gravity cast under lightspeed to deal the same damage as 3 gravities cast with no light speed. Lightspeed is never worth it when dpsing.

Also for the math, 3 normal gravity deals 600 potency damage, 4 lightspeed gravity deals 600 potency damage as well. One takes 3 gcd, the other takes 4.

Lightspeed in dungeons is also used in pulls to heal, so yes, you should be using it for something else.....the dps loss on spells is not worth the mp retention.

Also with your edit, a enhanced balance on a summoner for trash pulls is worth more than an aoe balance, especally if you have a paladin tank or even a ninja as the other dps. Or if one dps decided to aoe and the other only single target in a mass pull, it makes the aoe balance significantly weaker than a enhanced or extended balance on a summoner/ aoe heavy class.

The minor point you could win with lightspeed gravity is the mp gain
Which is now the worst reason to do it since AST mana regen is glorious !
(But for that mp you get no more damage and 1 gcd loss.. pretty meeeeh)

As many people forget
Lightspeed only reduce the cast time not the recast time

I see lightspeed as a Oh Shit button very useful in time of crisis (like when I have blast spamming my gravity on the pack and forgot to heal my tank and now i have to save him)
(It was also very useful A1S when my co-heal et derp heal and I had to handle double prey double buster alone *awful memory*)

Obviously it's not an amazing increase but there is no issue with AOE'ing cards in 4 man content. It's not a priority but I still do it.

I have run with so many AST that aren't regularly drawing cards. They are the ones doing it wrong.

I agree 100% with this. AOE is not worth 'wasting' the cards drawn, but to not use it if it lines up, would be even more silly. 4 man content does not really have many/if any hard DPS checks, and bad DPS is bad DPS. So if it is going slowly killing mobs, an extra 10% on bad DPS is minimal. I mean, in 4 man, is there a huge difference between 500 and 550 DPS for half a minute? If you have good DPS, the mobs are dying quickly anyway and is a non issue.

The fourth Lightspeed Gravity would hit well before the third non-lightspeed Gravity.

You're saying "3 gcds" and "4 gcds" while ignoring the fundamental flaw in this discussion - Gravity has a 3s cast time compared to the 2.5s gcd. With lightspeed, each cast of Gravity takes 2.5s to refresh, without it, each Gravity takes 3s to cast.

If we assume you start both of these at the exact same time, here's what we're looking at:

Actually i have a 2.7 second cast time on gravity, which is what i was remembering (near 2.5), which would have changed things differently. It would have made if this was the only thing that has changed.

However i have forgetten to factor in the change into recast time aka GCD change form the same modifiers.

However again, you are ignoring a fundemental part of this discussion when i state you get no extra casts from lightspeed. Factor in the last thing cast during lightspeed, the subsequent triggering of the global cooldown, then the hard casting of the next spell.

Also no matter how you look at it, 3 hard cast gravities trigger the global cooldown 3 times, 4 lightspeed cast gravities triggers it 4 times. It doesnt matter if the 4th cast of gravity under lightspeed is front loaded or not, there is a 4th global cooldown to deal with.

Also with what you have quoted me with, i am talking about global cooldown efficiency. And i am absolutley correct is saying that 4 of the same dps spells cast under lightspeed = same potency of 3 cast without.

Also pay attention to the quote i was responding to, where the claim is in a 10 second window with lightspeed, you can do more damage than without it, which, er, your maths seems to disagree with........so it agrees with what i am saying.

And the recast time on Gravity is thereby lower. If you have a 2.7 second cast on Gravity, your GCD spins at 2.25s. All of the above calculations will still hold firm.

3x2.7 = 8.1s for your third Gravity to hit
3x2.25 + 0.2s cast time = 6.95s for my fourth Gravity to hit.

Nothing changes. Except for the fact that then after that 4th GCD spin, I'll only be 9s into my Lightspeed timer, allowing me to get one last swiftcast heal out.

I literally just showed you a graph that shows you - without a doubt - that you gain +1 hit of Gravity in the exact same amount of time. The DPS will be identical when that 4th Gravity hits compared to when your third Gravity hits. I can follow this up with Cleric -> Essential Dignity -> Aspected Benefic (or just Benefic II with your GCD, since it'll be instant cast!) without skipping a beat. My Cleric drop happens a full second faster than yours, meaning my Essential Dignity is hitting before your heal is even beginning to cast.

Please actually look for a flaw in this logic, rather than spouting the same thing I disproved in my previous post (reproduced from your current post below).

Triggering the global cooldown fewer times does not change the fact that it takes longer before you can do anything else at the end of your third cast than I can at the end of my fourth.


I have yet to level AST to 60 myself, but this is all pretty common sense coming from number crunching and application of my extensive knowledge of healing on both WHM and SCH in these sorts of situations (dungeon trash garbage) before and since 3.0.

you see this right here, this is what i have been arguing from the start.

you know that cooldown on it that says "reduces attack magic potency", well that means under lightspeed, the 4 gravities you cast = the same damage as three without lightspeed.

Also i am confused why you are dropping clerics here, ASTs who know how to run dungeons wont be.

At 9 seconds with three gravity hardcast you are in a position where gravity has been cast. and the global cooldown has finished as its triggered at the start of the cast. this means at 9 seconds you are starting to cast something else.

You argue this is all common sense yet you have no experience. Your AST is lvl 37, and you clearly have no idea of how AST cooldowns are used in their entirety in a dungeon run or a raid. No AST worth anything would even dream of dropping clerics when you think they need to nor would they use their cooldown like you have guessed. And thats all this is coming down to isnt it? Guess work with zero exprience.

The experience I'm quoting is running on Scholar and needing to drop Cleric to heal a tank (with fairy healing with Rouse) around 10s into an encounter when they pull a pull that's large enough to warrant spamming Gravity. This happens more often than not due to tanks with bad cooldown usage or other such things. Failure to HG that huge pull or properly BP>DA+AD/DA+DD+DA+DP or bloodbath overpower spam causes a healer a lot of undue stress. Divine Seal HoTs are also far more potent than just as good as Synastry ones.

Combined, WHM has 360 potency of heals every 3s compared to a paltry 216 366 with Synastry. This couples with a lack of stuns on Gravity and a 3s shorter duration on said healing potency to make me incredibly dubious of these remarks, is all.

I would just be shocked if AST could stay in cleric longer than either SCH or WHM before needing to heal.


That said - I don't disagree with you. The things you're saying make sense. I suppose my only real issue is just that I can't fathom any other halfway decent use for Lightspeed. It seems to me like a second Swiftcast on a 2.5x cooldown that neuters the only thing it'd be halfway decent for. I would be delighted if you'd enlighten me to places where that skill is actually useful outside of Swiftcast substitution (like an Ascend cast).

Lightspeed is most useful for, besides like you mentioned a second Switcast, situations where you have to heal while moving. For example I find decent use out of it in Thordan Extreme and Sephirot Extreme as there are parts where I need to move to a spot quickly, but people need healing at the same time. Especially if I'm solo healing. It's also useful for rare situations to ignore interruptions through say AoE damage that interrupts. In PvP its a godly skill as you can run while casting everything with the enemy team wailing on you and like mentioned earlier don't have to worry about being interrupted due to damage taken or those 1 sec silences. Furthermore it allows you to weave OGCD skills in between your GCD skills without clipping a second or half off them, like your cards or Essential Dignity. Basically it won't see as much use in lower level content like dungeons but it is very useful in higher level content like Extreme and Savage fights, probably why you don't really see the usage of it.

When I really want to DPS it's aspected benefic + aspected helios + wheel of fortune + extended/enhanced bole + time dilatation
And if the tank die

It's his fault !

Maybe an essential dignity in between if the tank is pretty...
But only then !

So the best way to deal with pulls as a Diurnal AST in dungeons is as follows:

Synastry on tank > Aspect Benefic > Swiftcast > Aspected Helios > Collective unconscious > Time Dilation > clerics > gravity. You dont have to heal the tank at all in this pull. This pull will also include the use of LA and celestial opposition. Next pull will be A.Ben+A.Helios, the use of essential dignity and lightspeed, but only IF the mobs are not dying fast enough in DF.

The use of swiftcast in the above is also entirely Global Cooldown efficiency. As Collective unconscious regen can take up 2.9 secs to register, its best swiftcasting A.Helios and using collective unconscious during the GCD to hopefully have whell of fate up before the GCD has ended and into clerics we go.

Also not with time dilation, the AST hots are lasting far longer than WHM.

Lightspeed is a very very very powerful raid cooldown, but its usage in dungeons is diminished.

To add to this, its also used when you need to cure bomb tanks in raids, to make it cost less. Lvl 50 AST in t13, Lightspeed is a godsend for ahk morns.

Lightspeed + synastrie = bahamut go cry in a corner and all the whm are jealous as hell

I never do this myself. It takes long to setup, overheals a ton and generates ton of unnecessary enmity since all party members get regens. I find it way more efficient to DPS until tank has about 40-50% HP and then Essential Dignity + Aspected Benefic. Takes about one second to stance dance and heal since both are instaheals. A normal pull is usually dead when tank reaches 40-50% second time. If not, Swiftcast a Benefic II and finish them off

Tanks don't need to be topped all the time, they have their own self-sustain as well.

Well as AST you generate less enmity than other healer (well slightly more than SCH)

If you're afraid just pop luminiferous aether before HoT it will cancel all enmity and give you back à lot of mana during the gravity spam and it get extended as well

Tanks don't need to be topped all the time, they have their own self-sustain as well.

warriors have good self sustain for 4 man content. If a pld is expected to use clemency as self sustain something is going wrong from the healer. Drk is pretty much not as good as warrior for self sustain.

So you use no regen at all on the tank until they hit 40-50%?

How i use the regens requires 2 or slightly more than 2 GCD depending on how quick wheel of fate lands. I dont have to heal the tank at all during a pull like this after the regens are up. I get to dps to my hearts content.

The way you are describing it sounds like you are going to spend more time healing the tank rather than dpsing in a pull, as the big pulls that are expected in dungeons wont be covered by A.Benefic and essential dignity alone.

Also overhealing only matters in a certain way. In raids, it matters due to mp mismanagement and the potential to gain too much aggro (mainly on whm, its hard to generate too much aggro on an AST). In 4 man content, the regen from A.Helios on the other three party memeber is absolutely inconsequential. It seriously doesnt matter one bit at all in the grand scheme of things. What matters is the regens on the tank and how much dps that is allowing you to do. Too many healers are now looking at overhealing as catagorically wrong in any situation. If that slight overhealing in 4 man content allows you to push out more dps then so be it. If you were over healing by just standing there healing too much and nothing else, then that is an issue.

EDIT: oh my, nekotee has picked up the swiftcast benefic II that i missed. Yeah thats wrong and not needed. You're going to be healing more and dpsing less with how you are doing things compared to me. You are also using far more GCDs to heal than i am per pull.

An no matter what you do, you will never overheal more than those dumb whm that keep medica II and regen up all the time and cure bomb the tank like their life depend on it...

You know those kind of whm that are worse that sic EoS... you must have play with one at least once !

Do not Swift a less than 2sec cast, cast it and see if you tank is competent enough to survive 2 sec with 30% hp
