Mage Tank. Full stop.
Beastmaster. Wasn't my idea, but when I heard it sounds like the most unique wish out there. And I think it'd be great to see an FFXIV interpretation of a Beastmaster as a tank.
I would LOVE A Beastmaster/Tamer Tank class.
There are a few possible ways they can make it work, so I'm interested in how'd they'd do it.
Plus, if they have a Turtle Pet, I'd be even more happy.
I also think that having a Tank Pet class would round out the SMN/SCH/MCH group. 1 Tank, 2 DPS, 1 Heal pet classes.
I really hope we get a mage tank of sorts, all I really want though is that Samurai isn't our next tank. We already have two, two handed heavy bladed weapon tanks do we really need another?
One that tanks and isn't a DPS who can sort of mitigate damage and keep enmity.
Well anyway lol I'd like a blink tank like ninja from FFXI, that was the only tank I ever played in any mmo ever that I enjoyed.
Hot Water
these baths are getting rather cold by now.
oh wait thats not......
I'm a main tank (due to DRK being a tank on XIV), and I love tanking, but I'm so not looking forward to a new tank. Probably because they've already shown how little creativity they've got, but I'd like to think of a new healer better.
That said, and to be on topic, I'd love something different. RDM and/or BLU for example, or PUP/BST. The idea of SAM as a tank, which I defended years ago since DRK was a given for me, seems extremely boring now. More of the same.
So in short, RDM, BLU, PUP, or BST.
What kind? I would want a counter type tank. With moves to counter physical, magical and/or both. And to make it a well rounded tank (and to not repeat Dark Knights mistakes) a move that will allow the tank to use the counter moves without having to counter on a good timer.
Something like Bravely Defaults/Second's Swordmaster job. The more I look at that job and this game the more I see it fitting neatly with the rest of the tanks.
Now if they would only give Dark Knights a theme and change up its play to fit it...
It's funny, the last time I suggested a casting-lock focused tank in this forum I was laughed out of the thread.
If they did manage a Ninjistu-Ichi cast-type blink/mitigation for SAM, I'm all for SAM tank then. I care less about aesthetics and more about a new tanking play-style.
I can imagine a casting mechanic where the SAM (or whatever) get's their Defensive buff like 20/30% mitigation while in cast-lock (these cast aren't interrupted by damage, only if player moves) for certain skills. When the cast finishes there's then an actual skill execution, which could be self-healed for a % of max HP or reflect damage received while in cast-lock, counter-attacking based on amount of hits received, giving the SAM Maim-esque buff, etc etc.
They would need a Lightspeed/Rapid Fire buff or stance that would switch these abilities to instant, which could be better for OT or MT DPS burst windows. And then maybe a 30-45 second recast CD that let's them move around while casting (without interrupting cast) for dodge scenarios like Heavensfall and plums etc.
I think that would be an interesting FFXIV implementation of Iaido.
I would like SAM as a self barrier tank as a warrior counterpart.
dancer tank. a tank that while not doing much damage of their own(like paladin) has abilities that buff the parties damage to make up for it and instead of taking hits has abilities that allow them to dodge or otherwise negate the damage from hits. like there tank "stance" could be they start dancing and gain X% more dodge chance and having all their attacks turn into party buffs while having an effect that is constantly pulsing a aggro boosting damage attack (like a constant unleash but not as strong like maybe 75 potency) or maybe even constantly using some sort of allure effect that causes monsters to always have their attention on the dancer while in the "stance".
Vikings from ff3, cuz who doesn't like hammers, lightning , water spells and counter attacks? That or mystic knight which might be closest we get to a red mage worth their En~ spells/ability
Woops dbl post
Personally, I'm all for a red mage being a tank. I would like to see a sort of enhancer/enfeebler tank. I really like the idea of -en spells, spike spells, protects, hastes, or dispels being covered by a tank either through OCD, or by combos/-en combos.
Oooh I'd want a Beastmaster.
Got a cool pet class for tanks. Not sure how they'd pull it off though. Maybe the pet changes based on the weapon equipped, but has the same kind of fighting style?
Paladin. /10char
Rune Knight - from FF6 (Celes Chere).
The "Rune" could be used to absorb and enhance it's own stats. Eg. Increase Max HP, increase DEF, increase MDEF, increase AOE dmg, increase CRIT etc. Could be for personal or an aurabased buff.
It would be very interactive and fast, combining different runes to produce some new skills. Like mudras.
Or.. Calculator.
tank with gapcloser on gcd(mob jumping for fun_ an aoe provoke for when the healer lets you die in trash pulls, and one with synergy for many jobs, invuln down buff, magic invuln down buff. maybe a blink tank that can drop a shadow clone ala first boss of amdapor city hard, mothra which drops a doppleganger while you grab spawning adds. you know a fun tank to play, maybe?
A Swashbuckler tank comes to mind. Dual-wielding swords and focusing on evasion and parry. Maybe switching between 3 stances (full offense, full defense, and balanced) as well. The meat of their DPS could be provided via counterattacking (a la the warrior's Vengeance) and Double Slashing. Otherwise, I can't think of anything that hasn't already been done. Druid tanking maybe?Quote:
What kind of tank do you want in 4.0?
Alittle while ago I tossed around the idea of a sort of mind control tank, one that would grab one mob out of a group and make it fight for the party for a limited time, and the player could buff this mind controlled target to give them resistances and such, then I realized that only works in a situation where there's multiple enemies and you're kinda SoL whenever it's one guy
^If you never got to try FFXI in the glory years that's pretty much FFXI BST in a nutshell.
It was the only job that could solo to 75. By using that method of charming one set of mobs and sic'ing them on another set in a zone.
They eventually patched unique summonable pets for BST (Kinda like how SMN is now) so it could play in parties well too, but soon after there was PUP and they established TP burn parties, which made all DPS into gimp versions of WAR/NIN anyway.
Being a lvl75 BST back before all those changes was a real achievement. BST players were like unicorns. Can't help but wonder if SE can remember back that far, and if FFXIV does get a BST if they will give it that one of a kind flavor (unlikely)
A counterstance tank.
Think Swordmaster from Bravely Default.
I don't care what we get as long as it isn't another DRK situation.
Don't care as long as it uses neither fixed combos nor purely mitigation cooldowns and has a unique resource system or similar overarching or summative gameplay element.
That said, Samurai, Spellfencer, Sword Shaman, Swordsaint, Viking, Wildling, etc. all seem good candidates for that. Or a revised DRK... or a revised GLD/PLD...
Just a thought:
Blue Mage as a mage trickster or tide-turner support / magic-physical coverting counter tank. (More in the D&D sense of blue magic; the actual monster abilities (apart from being able to take their essence and double it back upon one's attacker--sometimes with the same animations and effects as BLU does here--would go instead to Wildling.)
Thaumaturge melee i-frame / oppressor dps capable of tanking - Reaper (Yes, with a scythe, and shadowforms, where fire, ice, and lightning play into spectral magic while shadow magic and slashing damage hold the majority of actions) >.>
tldr; uniqueness and hybrids, please.
We have a tank that dps (war), a tank who dont dps much (pld) and a magic tank between. May we can have a tank that can heal herself alone but who have a very low dps (beastmaster maybe) or we can have a tank who deals physical/magical damage and dps in exchange of life (for example the hallowed greed cost all hp-1, a cast how make 5000 damage cost 15k hp, etc...). Hum finally i dont have any idea about this shit xD
I don't care much about the new class, but I'd prefer tanks in general to focus on mitigation more. Tanks should not be prioritizing stats on their gear to increase their dps unless they outgear the content. Tanks might as well be called melee dps that can hold aggro at this point.
Hmmmm.... Maybe a tank that would manipulate the primary or secondary elements (perhaps orbs) in order to tank/dps. Earth/fire/water/air/lightning/ice/aether/void/metal/ or perhaps a combination. But the idea of a mage tank, would be fitting.
I'd like a decent tank. One that doesn't bail because they don't like the random jobs in the party or rng into a random dungeon they don't like via duty finder.
Well based on the tanks we have now.
We have the basics covered as far as the "theme" of the tanks. Warrior is the physical damage style of tank, Paladin has the holy knight tank/defensive physical damage type (shield and countering with shield) covered although I kind of wish paladin had some light/holy themed smiting type spells going on, not because I want it to manage MP like Dark Knight but rather because paladin has spells but really doesn't need to ever use it's hp and I really would like the ability to spend it on some kind of damaging move. Dark Knight has the shadow/dark power style tank covered. Of the other tank types I've seen, something with a magic or elemental power as a theme sees to be in order.
Depending on what direction FFXIV goes in for 4.0, I may be okay with a new Job, but as for what tanks are available in the series, I have no idea what could possibly be a tank. Paladin has consumed the Knight and Gladiator Jobs, but also their lesser known variants, like Holy Knight and Sword Saint. Warrior likewise, has consumed its peers, removing the Fighter, Berserker, and Viking Jobs. Dark Knight also stole aspects of the Mystic Knight, Rune Knight, Rune Fencer, and Templar Jobs. This leaves us with Dragoon, which has been regulated to a damage dealer, and Samurai which if implemented as a tank would just serve as another parry-based tank that uses a large two-handed sword. So unless SE breaks the mold by having a tank that wears equipment that isn't of the Fending suffix, I don't see that happening.
I think the more likely situation, is that SE will polish up the three we have and introduce more elements of the lesser Jobs contained within our core three tanking Jobs. If they do introduce branching skill trees, I could see them for example, giving Paladin the ability to focus on just their sword arm. Likewise, I could see Warrior gaining the ability to be either a highly risky berserker, or if they're the main tank of their static, perhaps the stalwart defender of the weak that the Marauder quest series shows off. Similarly, Dark Knight could either be the unstoppable vigilante, or the seemingly possessed warrior of justice who fights with uncanny ferocity.
Of course, like the rest of us, this is just conjecture, I have no idea what route they choose, but I rather see SE give us fewer skills, pare things down to their basics, and then give us options for how we want to specialize our chosen fighting styles.
I hope if they release samurai they don't go this route, if something like DRK is their idea of a parry based tank.
I hope they make it a counter tank whit barriers that when broken have an effect, they could also spice it up whit barriers you want to keep like you have a regen effect on you as long as the barrier is up or a immolation type of thing where you do aoe around you, it could even have rogue as a cross class for shade shift(maybe to powerful on a tank).
In the end I just hope whatever they do it is as well designed as warrior.
I'd like a tank with Piercing or Blunt force for its attack.
Okay so I would love a Rune Fencer, but probably not as people know it from other FF games.
Maybe a one handed rapier wielder, with low damage but a base 20% skill speed out of tank stance, and then in tank stance a summoned shield in exchange for the speed. Uses runes for attack and defense buffs, maybe carved in the air with the rapier. quick looking attacks. maybe an elemental resistance rune, physical damage resist rune, a rune for ranged spell to grab aggro.
Also would like a tank that keeps aggro through dots, maybe a high cost opener combo that gets snap aggro but cant be used that often, just for pulls, then DoTs maintaining aggro through the fight while they focus on damage or skills to prepare defensively
The kind that knows how to do their job, there isn't nearly enough of them.
Something that plays like riftstalker in Rift would be fun, barrier/avoidance tank.
