So why is Tetragrammaton have that perticular name?

So this might be an odd question, but I am curious what people think.

So we know in this game that the English Team decided to make the spells go 1, 2, 3, to avoid confusion, or oddities, when the spells are vastly different in execution, like a single target or AoE. Now traditionally, Final Fantasy games have tier 1 spells being the name itself, tier 2 being the -ra suffix, and tier 3 being the -ga suffix, but their is also a 4th tier the -ja suffix, and with the expansion we got Fire 4 or Firaja and Blizzard 4 or Blizzaja.


Now my question is, Why isn't one of the new White Mage spells Cure 4 or Curaja? Tetragrammaton just seems like the most logical of the 2 new healing spells, lol.

Traditionally, Curaja would either heal for a very high potency or all HP. The main thing that got me thinking this was my run of Lost City HM today, It finally clicked that the final boss casts Cure 4, so why not us?

There is nothing wrong with the name, just felt odd to me.

Tetragrammaton refers to a 4-letter word. I'll let you interpret that one for yourself :p

But on a slightly more serious note it usually refers to Yahweh, which if I'm not mistaken is the Jewish word for God and encompasses a lot of holy things, like benediction but on a smaller scale

I recall an interview, though I can't recall if it was a general event or a PLL, where they discussed the naming conventions and how they considered the traditional suffix-based naming but ultimately chose to use numbers instead, so as to make the game more accessible to non-FF lifers. You and I know Fire<Fira<Firaga<Firaja, but someone who's only ever played WoW or TOR would take a minute to figure that out. But for the Japanese, they got Cure, Cura, Curaga.

Interestingly enough, the HW WHM abilities are actually named the same in JP and EN. Asylum, Assize, and Tetragrammatron aren't just NA/EU localizations of traditionally-named abilities.
(You can look up Job Quests > White Mage on the Lodestone and then change the subdomain of the URL from na.finalfantasyxiv to jp.finalfantasyxiv to compare, if you feel so inclined and can read kana).

One of the things about Lost City is that it demonstrates what was discussed earlier in

the WHM questline, where the padjal doesn't want to accept you as a WHM because he thinks you'll just abuse White Magic. I don't recall off the top of my head how long it's been, but the abuse of White Magic that lead to the fall of Amdapor was at least long enough ago that your typical CNJ doesn't recognize the existence of anything after Cura/Cure2, and certainly you can see how even spells that we as modern WHMs are familiar with have changed since then. The Amdapori Regen, for example, looks nothing like what we would call Regen. While I can't speak for the lore team or anyone who actually worked on the game, it makes sense that the de-/re- evolution of White Magic over the years could easily explain changes in names and such. A WHM of our day, not necessarily privy to the attack names we players see in combat, might go into Kuribu's chamber and call what he sees "Asylum" instead of "Regen". Unless he was some sort of Historical Magickalist or some academic profession that came with an understanding of how time affects magical theories and repertoires.

sure, i can't even remember how i figured that out in the first FF i have played....... whatever, in german we don't have the numbers. it's Feuer > Feura > Feuga > Feuka for Fire and Vita > Vitra > Vitaga for Cure... i think in the beta the spells had the numbers but they changed it on release c.c,,

i find it interesting that the german names are usually Vita > Vitra > Vigra and not Vita > Vitra > Vitaga. but Vitaga is in english Cure 3. But Cure 3 does not even work like the next step after Cure 2. Cure 3 is a whole different spell. and so is Tetra. Tetra is NOT Cure 4. Cure 4 should be a spell with a way higher potency than Cure 2 and not an instant off-gcd. and Cure 4 should be Cure 3. and the spell wich is now Cure 3 should have a different name.

Agreed 100%. Even various ingame sources highlight the differences. The white magic wielded by the Padjali today is but a fraction of the power of the white magic wielded by the Amdapori. The magics of eld were frightening, enough that the elementals recognized how devastating they would be (the silly war was the final nail in the coffin). Ancient black magic was so strong, a single spell could raze an entire city. I think my question got a little lost, probably my fault after rereading it it does seem a bit ambiguous.

My question is simply, does is seem odd that WHM didn't get a Cure 4?

I was just trying to say that Tetra could of been named Cure 4, and pointed out English localization of the spells as a reason it could of been Cure 4; because the spells dont match the traditional tier list.

I know what Tetragrammaton means, and that it has the same name in Japanese. And I know about the tier list change. So responses to this aren't needed.

Well we've only had one expansion.

Cure IV could come in 4.0 for all we know.

The primary difference between the Cure series and Tetra is that Tetra is an off the global cooldown ability.

Cure I, II and III are specifically called healing spells and are on the global cooldown.

Tetra is labelled an "Ability" and is off the global cooldown. This I think is the primary reason it is not called "Cure IV" as it is not classed as a "spell" and is instead classed as an ability. It is the same reason Benediction is not in the Cure series name because it is an ability, not a spell. Tetra is basically a miniature version of Benediction. Also note that Tetra is not affected by Divine seal as divine seal only affects spells.

probably because a skill wich is worth the name Cure 4 would be too powerfull at the current state. it should have a potency around 800. and unlike blm with his rotation and buff a whm have to be able to use his skills all the time without locking them behind a buff.

Tetra doesn't strike me as much of a healing ability name.

I almost think it better to have reserved Tetragrammaton for the next WHM offensive spell/ability. Perhaps a spell that penetrated the target's body with a beam of light, melted their faces, or cause their heads to esplode.

Cure IV is, for now, an enemy exclusive ability unless we get more spells in the next expansion. Tetragrammaton is an ability instead of a spell as a few have said and it has no MP cost, so it'd be a little odd to have the next "Cure" spell working on different mechanics.

I believe they said in the past they did not use the -ra, -ga, -ja convention as new players got confused and did not realise which was the "better" spell.

Ironically, I think FFXIV would benefit from using this wording, as it would force new players to read the spells and realise there is not really a better/worse version of each spell, but that they are different and to be used in different situations.

The fact they don't is the reason we end up with Fire III spammers occasionally

If people never read instructions given out by the NPCs in the Steps of Faith trial, what makes you think a name change is going to have them read it?

It seem like SE taking final fantasy tactics approach. Cure 1 = regular heal. Cure 2 = strong heal. Cure 3 = AoE heal. Cure 4 = strong AoE heal. If you follow this. By spamming cure 3, you can proc cure 4 which will result in small area massive AoE heal. I doubt it will be 800 potency. More like, 650 potency.

I don't think that would be a good approach for a healer. Mostly because chances are encounters would be balanced around your access to Cure 4, so putting it on a proc creates inconsistency which is something you really don't want on a healer. If you don't balance fights around WHM having Cure 4, that would either make WHM OP in raid content (as in considerably better healing throughput compared to AST/SCH) or make the spell itself trivial (sort of how Cure V was in FFXI since it healed for such a great amount and cost so much MP that most WHMs considered it a waste of MP because Cure IV was more efficient).
