Here's three easy steps to completely bypass the problem.
1. Disable tell sound effects
2. Create a new chat tab titled: tells
3. Isolate tells to that chat tab and look for the green text regularly incase you get any relevant tells
That's so weird, here on Moggle, i'm getting a tell maybe once every two weeks.
Hyperion is a nightmare. I have to set my status to 'Busy' if I want any peace. Luckily I'm in an FC with all the friends I talk to on a regular basis and have a LS for everyone else.
I really wish SE would do something about this nonsense.
These occasional threads make me wonder if it's my name beginning with w or something, but I've gotten maybe five whispers since the launch of HW in Cerberus.
Here on Balmung I haven't seen a RMT in like 2 years.
I don't get it, what has been nearly 2 years? Since you specifically started playing?
On leviathan server it's during the wee hours of the morning when like no one is barely on and the party finder is completely empty is when the RMT go freaky crazy with the tells. I guess that's when china is in prime time hours? Fortunately its not as bad in the early evening for us (like raid time for most).
I would have thought RMT would target a NA server during our prime time but hey I'm not complaining. I mean, the tells are still awful all the time but during wee hours of morning is when you'll literally get 3 different ones in under a minute, sometimes simultaneously. I wanna pull my hair out but even though I delete like 50-100 out of my blacklist at a time, I quickly refill it like in a day or two easily. I know it doesn't help much but sometimes particular RMT just will spam you for a hour on end before they give up. Maybe I should move to a JP server where they don't have this problem? -_-''''
RMTs are bad on Siren, and it's not a very big server at all. I just turned off the tell noise, but I see a lot of people set to busy, or have tells disabled completely.
I have a screenshot from this morning from a gil bot saying the Christmas promotion is still going on. I cringed.

Midgardsormr is horrible. More often than not, I've got a RMT tell before my loading screen is even gone when I log in. Blacklist is long full, and I regularly prune it. In fact, I just logged in while writing this post, and already have two tells. I log in and /busy immediately usually. It's crazy.
Yeah, Midgardsormr can be pretty bad with its tells, although its not too bad in the evenings, I noticed.
New Chat Log Tab
Filter Tells
Press Select+R2 to check /tells if you think it was a player
Press L2 and go back to business.
When I was on Mateus I had a /tell literally every minute unless I turned on /busy. When I transferred to Cerberus, I've had around 4 /tells in a year.
The only thing you can really do is turn /busy on, blacklist them, or put your /tells in another chat channel.
Idk his exact name but there's a legit player that runs around with an RMT name lol...hell some RMT's have normal player names on Hyperion
It's been 11 years, and WoW still has gold sellers.
It's just one of those things you can't avoid in an MMO, sadly.
No matter what measures are put in place to stop them and what changes are made to the game and servers they will find ways around it. They know a lot about how these games work and how to exploit them there are whole communities online built around creating bot programs and hacks for games or finding exploits to use. It's like any criminals online using trojans, viruses and other rogue software to extort money each time they are stopped it doesn't take them long to find new ways to do the same thing.
True, but i could easily log in if i was a gm equipped with a ban hammer and just start whackin at em every time i got a tell. Force them to pay more than they make and they will stop. They could very easily combat it considering it takes a sub and a game purchase to play. just start making profit off them til they are broke. They could not allow tells until you are level 20, easy goal to make, and it will at least slow them all down.
SE does care and they work hard on this, and I think the system could be better. It would be nice if they had a click and report, which copied the message and did all that in one step. If you get these, report them, it goes a long way. SE puts out reports as it investagates these issues, but we don't want the banhammer to drop without them looking into it.
My preference would be, right click = > Report. It would send it to SE for review, and mute that player (not blacklist) so you can't get tells from them until X amount of time has passed.
It's not as bad as the 2.0 era, but I still get a random tell here and there. Whether that's due to SE or Gilgamesh almost always being locked, I can't say.
The solution is simple: Stop putting up items for ridiculous prices so people that buy Gil will decrease, which means less spammers.
I mean, on my server level 30 items are up for 80k. That is just insane.
On a normal day, I get about 5-10 spam messages. What we need is a report function that will mute and report someone after a certain threshold.
I suspect the bots are sending out the same number of tells all day long, but in off-peak hours when you're one of only a relatively few players on, you become the recipient of a greater portion of those tells.
But yes, it's frustrating that SE still hasn't implemented anything to control the problem. There's still no chat filters and no effective reporting.
It's never so much that they don't care, but rather they don't prioritize countermeasures for RMT. I've said it many times, and I'll be saying it for a very long time to come, but SE is grade A **** when it comes to devs providing proper/efficient QoL changes to their games and proper customer service being available to consumers. Maybe it's their policies in-place for their employees or maybe it's the employees themselves... actually the latter (at least) is absolutely the case for many past instances.
As people are not quitting over the matter, it's always going to be low on the priority list. That is, assuming RMT do not attempt greater annoyances to advertise, like the FR fiasco we suffered. Even with that, it still took the devs an absolutely ridiculous amount of time to come up with the elementary fix of taking the obvious path of removing the FR function from free accounts. Filtering chat problems, unless their system is intentionally made to make their lives hell, is probably the simplest of things to fix... as in it'd probably take less than a cumulative of 1 hour to add and test internally. They likely just need to get the OK from bossman, which probably won't happen in the foreseeable future. He probably feels that it's meaningless, since RMT will always be there. It's absolutely true btw to feel that way, but to not even bother giving us the tools to minimize the annoyance is a bad philosophy.
Yup, they (I believe) streamlined the right-click report system for MMORPGs. Unlike here, the blist capacity isn't a problem, so using it would also block said character, along with all chat history from him/her/it. Their internal filters seem to be doing the job, although RMT did have to think of (admittedly) clever ways to bypass it. Creating corpses on the ground to spell out the website is a rather interesting example.
Well, I can name tons that don't have gil spammers, seeing as gil is only on 2 mmorpg's, so Everquest, World of Warcraft, pick a MMO that doesn't have the name Final Fantasy and they don't have gil spammers.
But seriously tho, Everquest has no plat spammers. There is your serious 1
Only way it's going to stop rmt on NA servers is if the US bans companies from selling video game money like they have in other countries on JP servers we have no rmt spam I've been in a JP server for almost 2 years I've never gotten a rmt message we have bots that's about it
LOTRO had a lot the first few weeks after its release. Then they added in the right-click report feature and text filtering and so on, and all the spam vanished. It's not that other games don't have people *trying* to spam them. It's that other games don't allow it. SE seems to be the only company that just lets the spam run rampant, without putting in any features to block it.
I feel as though the mentor program is the start of removing Gil spammers,
Step 1: create a system where new players can still get the help they need and that is by invite only.
Step 2: block anyone under X amount of hours played and/or under X level from using any form of communication other than the mentor chat.
Since it's by invite only it will stop the spammers from being able to spam tells or say or shouts
Getting 100% rid of currency sellers in any MMO is next to impossible, havent seen a game where theres literally zero sellers and i pretty much have played all of them.
