Hey, pretty much as the title says. What are your favourite games of all time, and what can FFXIV take away from them to make it better?
My favourites are:
- Starcraft I
- Guild Wars I
- Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Starcraft
This is an entirely different genre, but there are a few things which we can take away from it
User created content
One thing that kept me playing this game for years was the ability to play "Use Map Settings". Players could create their own maps with their own rules. You could do things like tower defense to DBZ RPG's within the game. It would be great if there was a way to add some sort of user-created content to FFXIV, so that when we are done with the supplied content we will have something to keep us going.
Balance
One thing I think Starcraft did amazingly well was provide 3 very different races while keeping overall balance in check. Of course, there were certain strategies that worked better, or certain units on one race which owned the other, but the overall balance was there. I think if FFXIV wants to get serious in PvP, they need to work on providing this same level of balance. Further, I'd like to reiterate that the 3 races in Starcraft are very different, and you do not need to homogenize things to achieve balance.
Guild Wars 1
Guild Wars 1 had me playing for years, I got every campaign and the expansion and played every class. It was incredibly fun. Things i think we can take away from this:
Healing
One thing that made healing great in Guild Wars 1 was the fact that anyone could get hurt at any time and there was constant damage to heal. You wouldn't go 25 minutes and spend less than 1 minute of it casting heals as you do now. You wouldn't just heal the tank and aoe heal once in awhile, you actually had to prioritize and react quickly to keep your team alive. It would be great if more encounters in FFXIV required this level of healing.
Campaign
This applies to Starcraft I as well, but in both games you can easily replay missions. It would be awesome if in FFXIV we could go back and replay story quests and re-experience the story from chosen set points with our characters.
Cross Classes
In Guild Wars 1 there was a function where you could choose any class to be your 2nd class (i.e. you could be a Monk[healer]/Necromancer). Each class had a set number of trait paths (i think 5) that you got on your main class, and you had this -1 on your 2ndary class. This made it important which was your first, but you got most of the access to your 2nd class. Now I don't think this exact system would work here, I think it would be neat if we could choose our 2ndary classes for cross classes. I am sure many of us would keep the same choice (i.e. who wants to tank without provoke), but it may open up some opportunities for more variation. One WAR secondary class could provide better DPS, but another would be essential for tank swapping while another may provide the best self healing - etc.
Henchmen
I am not sure if this could work here, but in Guild Wars 1 if you couldn't find a group, you could pick up henchmen for free. Pretty much every role was available but you could only get 1 of each (pick up one protection healer, one healer, one interrupt, one caster etc..). Having these in the game would allow people to experience older content without having to wait for long periods, and would allow the dev team to create a more challenging open-world.
Legend of Zelda
I loved this game, but I actually feel like everything that LoZ Ocarina of Time did well, so does FFXIV. For example the game makes you feel like a hero going on a grand adventure.

Well.... it's sort of hard since this is an MMO and all my favorite games of all time are Single Player (for the most part).
Like, I love Zelda but I really don't think it would translate that well into an MMO (at least one where you are the hero). Maybe something could be thought up.
Or like SMT. There IS an SMT MMO, actually, and it was very good but not popular in the west so of course the western version was cancelled. :'(
Hmm what else? Pokemon? Yes Pokemon MMO please. But that is, and would be, a completely different MMO subgenre.
Guilty Gear? It's a 2D fighting game, it wouldn't translate well to MMO.
So I guess my answer is "IDK" because genres are so different. -

After this, my favorite MMO is FFXI, but it's difficult to get more cross-pollination than we already have, since the two games are fundamentally different sorts of experiences.
I still think FFXIV would be better if it eased up just slightly on so-called "instant gratification" and emphasized long-term goals and achievement a bit more, but a lot of the ways to do that don't really fit into a modern theme-park MMO that well, so they'd have to be pretty careful introducing things like this. I'd like to see the Zodiac/Anima questlines expanded in some way or another to include more job-specific gear, sort of like how FFXI introduced ways to upgrade original Artifact and Relic equipment as the years progressed (and the Empyrean equipment too, recently). Raid tiers could probably also stand to be longer (perhaps 9 months instead of 6), so that accomplishments and content in a given tier had a slightly longer "shelf-life." -

DC Universe and Final Fantasy XI.
DCUO and FFXIV are both fast-paced, and have the whole "Hold L2" or "Hold R2" button to use a skill thing. DC does a few things I like:
- Voice chat.
- All characters (excluding YOUR character) have voices.
- Saves your gear as a style, so you can use that style any time without needing to hold onto the item.
With FFXI, I just like the game overall. Content such as Dynamis, Salvage, Nyzul Isle, Abyssea, Sea, Sky (all these before they got nerfed). Then there's the leveling party systems. Also, going from place to place felt like a dangerous adventure. In FFXIV, I never felt intimidated to enter a new area.
I have other "favorite" games, but I noted these two since I have history with them. -

It was available in the West for a short while via Aeria Games, but they handed it over to Atlas, and it never regained a wide enough playerbase for them to continue it here. I think Square needs to look at PVP from Blizzard games. Looking at the PVP from WoW and the PVP from Heroes of the Storm might end up helping the PVP situation for FFXIV.

Im currently playing Black Desert Online. I have horses that i can breed and sell, mount and even perform mounted combat on. Im in a guild that works together everyday to do guild missions to better our guild. We get paid to be in our guild 14k every day. We also have a player designed emblem. I have multiple houses. Yes..dozens. I also have a bank storage in every single town and each one is separate from the others(its not shared storage). Each one free and each one can be enlarged by unlocking space(items from quest/cash shop) The cash shop so far only has fashion, skill resets, and dyes, and pets or horses and neither help you "win." So it is similar to FFXIV cash shop. Oh and i have the ability to choose my own rotation because Theres gender locked classes but theres multiple ways to play each class. And due to players complaining, theyre working on the other gender options as well.(EX: Witch and Wizard[Different gender but very similar combat]) I can also fish while afk. Or manually fish through a mini game. Thats right i have options. Oh its buy to play. 30 or 50 usd depending on your choice. Then you never pay again. Its also much more beautiful. Did i mention the storage space and the fact that its b2p? Seriously why cant a subscription game keep up with this? I also have a lore log like the glamour log people wanted and it can hold any type of knowledge possible like NPC data, recipes, monster data and location. There are over 10 thousand quests available at launch. The Gold sellers are hardly a problem compared to FF. I crafted a raft last night. This morning i drove my wife around the world on a romantic fishing trip with lots of beautiful scenery we discovered a few houses on an island and she decided to move in to one of them. I havent even logged in FFXIV since i got this game. I feel nothing for FF now. At level 50 i get to PvP 1v1, and GvG. And we saw some high level fishermen/women harpoon and bank a FREAKING WHALE from a player crafted fishing ship.
I could go on for a long long time. But itd be faster to just say I like this game better than FFXIV in every possible way EXCEPT.. uh give me a minute XD.. Well, Lack of end game(if you even reach it with 10,000 quests and levelling every single craft/gather/etc). The cut scenes arent quite as good(who cares? i play to have fun not see small HQ video clips here and there) And the voice acting sounds slightly low budget. But other than that its superior in every way in my opinion. Some people may not feel like it is as fast paced so depending on the person that could be a negative. There is also and energy system like archage had but this one doesnt suck. You can refill by Resting, Questing rewards (that are very common), or Waiting. Also its very easy to hire npcs to gather for you so you dont have to waste points or gather at all if you hate it and you plan to craft/have npcs craft for you(which is my next thing to list). you can also have npcs craft for you. You pay your npc workers with things like ice cold Beer. So energy ...i dont think is a negative but it might remind people of archeage... Dont. DO NOT. Just try it and youll see. Its much better.
TL;DR
Im sorry i got carried away. I am having a blast with this game. Honesty TL;DR I personally think FF could learn a S#@T load from Black Desert.
OH i forgot to mention Chacter creation is ridiculous. Iys so good, you can actually sculpt out real people on demand. If you have the patience for it.

Diablo 3: Hardcore mode. It would be next to impossible to implement in this game, but what about one wipe instead, after which the group is locked out of the instance for 24 hours? It'd definitely be a challenge then :O It could also make dungeons like Castrum Meridium and Praetorium less boring as well.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms VII+: Debate battles. Kind of an amusing type of "combat", especially for healer classes and rogues/ninjas (this last one will probably only make sense to me). It could be an alternative way to win battles, by persuading your way to victory, rather than just brute forcing your way to such. It could also make NPC interaction more, well, interactive as well, and not just skipping all the quest text. -

Anything with a story that draws me in, lets me get emotionally attached to a character and then kills them off. Oddly that didn't work in FFVII for me. -

Hey thanks for the responses! Just wanted to note, that your favourite game doesn't have to be an MMO and if it isn't an MMO there are still things that FFXIV can learn from them. As I mentioned in my OP I drew some stuff from Starcraft I, even though it isn't an MMO.
For example for Pokemon, you could contrast it to LoV or something if you wanted (as I know it was often compared to it prior to release, but the final product wasn't really like it).Quote:

Phantasy Star Online was (is, as there is PSO2 but it's not likely ever going to be localized) and action game and essentially the first hunting game (but in online co op form as well as offline single). What I love there:
No area ever becomes useless to go to. No matter your level you could play an area in any of the four difficulties and find useful rare drops, be they weapons or materials. Sometimes these came only from rare versions of monsters. You usually went into an area hunting for them, but it was fun and you might find something else you could use. Years of playing there were a few things I never found, but I really enjoyed it.
Race and class choice gave specific, tangible benefits and downsides. Made the gameplay fun and engaging. You could play anything as any race but it was different how you did so and your choices and stay planning had meaning.
You could swap on a weapons palette between a few different weapons usable by your class. Made long gaming sessions fun due to more variation of play style.
Weapons and creatures had elemental attributes. It kept things more interesting when determining what area you were going into and how you wanted to deal with it. It also made finding that second rare item better as it would have different stats and you could hunt further to tweak a weapon how you wanted.
Honestly I'm probably better suited for a hunting game mmo than I am the sort of mmo XIV is or my other favorite game mentioned:
The original Guild Wars drew me in for one main reason: while you had a ton of skills you could only ever use 8 in combat, so you were constantly adjusting your builds. This was kept fresh with the constant buffing and needing of skills and addition of new ones. It was a lot like M:tG. One thing XIV suffers from is skill bloating and just too many keys to press. I heal. I really just don't know how I'd do a DPS rotation proficiently since my background was never a big PC gamer.
Healing as a result was crazy fun (to me). I had made solo Smite farm builds, Prot builds, heal builds - all for different aspects of the game while playing a healer in different ways. XIV mechanics are pretty samey once you know your job.
There's more games I am sure I could compare, but these are some general aspects I find myself longing for in XIV, but I know already I'm more suited to an RNG based grinding game than I am a tone based one. I just don't like tones and would rather have the excitement of that awesome thing just appearing at any moment. Time spent grinding I have generally found to be the same. It's just the game style is different. Maybe some ideas would help XIV but I think once you have a franchise stated and a player base its too hard to make big changes. -

KH 1 - Some more crossovers from other companies.
FFXI - Genkai 1, Genkai 2, Genkai 3, and Maat wants a rematch. Old zones like Boyahada Tree and den of Rancor.*

I can't really say it's my favourite game, but Guild Wars 2 did inventory management so much better than FF14 does. GW2 also has snappier feeling motion and action oriented combat.
Lord of the Rings Online did cosmetics way better than FF14 does, though I actually prefer the system in Secret World better. In Secret World stats are completely separate from visible gear such that a cosmetic system isn't really even needed at all. -

From SWTOR: A story with branching dialogue trees that actually have consequences. Now granted, in the SWTOR storylines the endings are basically always the same but a few of them do drastically change the path to get there and the dialogue that happens at the end along with the possibility of killing off certain NPC's. I'd have loved the option to punch the Fortemps son instead of letting Thancred do it.

SMN had next to no actual damage scaling for years before the devs remembered to make Avatars scale with summoning magic skill (not to mention the terrible Blood Pact timers and the fact they only became relevant after Alexander + Perfect Defense entered the game). Beastmasters were screwed from day 1 because of asinine penalties and lack of scaling/utility. Let's also not forget that Puppetmasters were largely a joke and needed an exploit to do even half-decent damage, even after the numerous buffs that job received.Quote:

My point for pet classes was making the pet actually matter rather than being a glorified DoT, I think summoner should be be about the summons, I think if they ever add beastmaster, it should focus on the beast's you tame, etc.Quote:

Xenoblade X: A recent example that any MMO developer could learn things from; both good and bad. I wish FFXIV adopted XbX's design ethos when setting out to make new zones; areas that are not just large, but genuinely fun to explore with something new to always discover, and should take a very lengthy amount of time to see everything along with having a real element of danger added to that exploration. The game also handled it's version of hunts called tyrants significantly better and tied it into the exploration element. tl:dr; a diadem that works :/
Also seamless connected areas something people have always wanted to see. The Wii U only allows 1 gig of ram for use by games but XbX did it so well. The sooner we ditch the PS3 so they can start really making use of the ram in both the PS4 and a modern PC the better.
Phantasy Star (any version): Elemental and enemy type weaknesses/attributes. Someone already touched on this but it would add a nice amount of depth to this game. -

final Fantasy IV- Rydia was the first Summoner I've seen in any game. Impressive summons - were my favorite spells. I wish the summons in this game rocked.
Also summoner can use a whip - yes please. And Rosa the White Mage using a bow. I'd love to have a healer class / archer hybrid.
Final Fantasy Vi - Characters with personal issues I could relate to (or could when I was 12 lol). The cast in 14 feels too hokey and seems to have no lives outside of the plot -

Warframe
Their assassin's mark system.
In the game (Warframe), when you kill a boss, you get an assassin's mark pertaining to what faction the boss is from. Grineer, you get the Gustrag Three, Corpus you get the Zanuka Hunter, and generally all boss will somehow trigger Stalker.
So after you get the mark, there is a 2% chance that any of those assassins would appear in your next mission. They're hard at lower levels but very easy at higher levels (except for the current Shadow Stalker).
I hope FFXIV would adapt this system and add a certain chance that a rare enemy would join the dungeon or trial. The game lacks variety when it comes to randomness and I think this would be a great addition.
I would love to see Odin suddenly appear in Amdapor City HM just before the final boss, or when you were surprised by an S rank mark in a dungeon. Or even to see a new kind of enemy right after we kill the last boss. -

Eq2- and later on other mmorpgs : climb walls , it made me feel like and adventurer , both in open world zones and dungeons (not usable on combat ofc) .Eq2 the crafting was no rng and fun too, the housing is incredible u can even have your own personal island or Pirate ship , or mini-castle , lots of options.
FFXI- the world itselft , Eorzea cant hold a candle against Vanadiel , this one has way more wildlife , and change based around day/light , miss watching airships flying , birds on the sky ect, Npcs moving....., dont foget Volcano eruptions....lots of little things that made u go ....woah... the only thing that made me say that was the rainbow in hinterlands.
Campaign would have been awesome in FFXIV , enemies attacking zones , or player attacking enemies strongholds....that would be cool.
Gw2 - Inventory , and "fates"
Wow - Raids is the only thing left that has some quality , big raids with multiples bosses in huge zones. Instead of 4 arenas and that it...
Oh the new weapon quests looks amazing....U dont have to pay for it on the MB , u do quest with lore characters , "events" over the world / dungeons / and gain fragments ....in the end u enhance it while HAVING FUN.....thats how u do a "epic weapon"
Aion - Wind-Streams , air tubes that let u fly faster. -

- Party size of up to 6 people (12 for raid parties)
- possibility to use mercenaries in dungeons
- Raids that entail more than some trash mobs and boss rooms
- Introduction of traps in dungeons
- Introduce puzzles that actually need brain mass
- DUNGEON RANDOMIZATION
- Class personalization (choose all stats + skills)
- No time limit in dungeons
- Only 3 day raid loot lockout instead of a whole week (more incentive to play raids)
- No loot lock-outs of doom!
Rift and Tera
- Open world invasions
- wardrobe/glamour systems (no class restrictions!)
- Instanced housing (you can basically build the house yourself - bit by bit)
- (again) class customization
- For the love of everything PROPER LOOKING AND MOVING HORSES!
- Nexus - giant invasion at certain times in switching locations, connected to huge boss fights in private instances after
- More possibilities to get currencies for gear (everything you do should give you certain currencies)
- Soft cap on ALL gear currencies (only max the amount you can carry - meaning, remove the 450 hard cap crap)
PvP (taken from all games)
- Actual Wars for certain castles/territories (between guilds) with access to special rewards/dungeons
- Possibilities of PvP channels for people that are into them
- Again, guild wars in optional territories (people need to be able to avoid it if they want)
(Mind you, I am not much into PvP but it CAN enrich a game if done properly)
I doubt they will listen but it is worth a try.... -

Glad you added DDO. I came (again) to add that. Never played Ragnarok. Either one. But I love how they did rogues in DDO. I was a pure trap/lock/sneak specialist. It was a joy to go back to "those rogue roots". It is tiresome to see so many MMO games shove rogues into "pure DPS back-stab-type) classes. But nice to customize all your classes, but, D&D ruleset, versus "FF ruleset" doesn't allow that. The dungeons, yes. Bonus for smashing stuff (yeah not in FFXIV). Bonus for clearing traps. Bonus for locks picked. Bonus for full clears (or X% mobs killed at least). 4 levels of dungeons, etc. Fantastic.Quote:

03-15-2016, 01:52 PMBrackenI'm in the exact same boat, the game is truly amasing, the lack of insta teleport is great, you have to basically do it all by your self, guilds hire you on a weekly contract so if your not pulling your weight, they dont have to re hire you. all housing is isnstanced so everyone gets a home. pets add additional bonuses. oh and did i mention its amazing.Quote:
