Gated healing question

Hello everyone,
I just want to give a disclaimer, this will probably be a super noob question.

What is meant by the phrase "Gated Healing?"
Does this mean a healer's ability is limited, under certain circumstances or something different? I'm an eternal DPS finally looking to try other classes. lol, thanks.

Can you give context as to how the term was used?

The term gated is used as there is some kind of wall that cuts something out. Some examples are:

A char cant get hit for more than one third of his hp. (e.g. Diablo 3 the early Sorc)
No matter how high the hit any damage that strips of the shields will get drasticly reduced (Mass Effect 3)

That said I do not know of any gate in FF14 beside "living dead", "walking dead" and "holmgang". No matter how high the hit, it wont be able to pass the gate of 1 hp.

"gated" is also used to refer to any system or content that is limited in some way.

For example, end-game gear is "gated" behind Allagan Tomestones of Lore and behind Midas on a weekly basis.

So, "gated healing" is probably referring to Scholar Abilities, who has an Aetherflow Mechanic that powers most of its Healing abilities. These abilities don't cost mp, but you can only use 3 within a 60sec period. So those Scholar Abilities are "Gated" to 3 total uses every 60 seconds.

Sorry if this is confusing, but there's so many possible interpretations. If possible, please tell us where you heard the term.

Going off of Anova's explanation and common sense, it actually makes the most sense and confirmed what I thought:

One other question; does Astrologian or White Mage have similar situations?

Ast and whm have their most powerful single target heals on a fairly long CD (longer and more powerful on whm) but these two jobs are able to heal really hard on GCD as well

This was my reading too, though that's probably too narrow a look at Aetherflow. I know I'm being kind of pedantic here but you can already be sitting on a 3 stack, use all 3 charges Aetherflow and use the new 3. In the extreme you could follow up with a dissipate for another 3 charges. 9 uses in as many seconds, if we're talking Lustrate and discounting the lag on buffs being processed.

Ah, that video. He is correct in his assessment of Scholar, White Mage, and Astrologian. Scholar generally worries a lot less about MP and works on maintaining aetherflow stacks for its most powerful healing spells. For the most part, his advice and description of the classes is spot-on. That said, I would recommend trying out all 3 healers and seeing which playstyle you like. You'll level all 3 to lv.30 or so anyway, so it's fine to play with the early dungeons to see what it's like. Just start with the one that sounds the most enjoyable to you.

As mentioned by HPDelron though, you do get a lot of tricks at high levels to gain up to 9 Aetherflow stacks in less than a minute by timing the Aetherflow Ability CD, the Aetherflow buff duration, and Dissipation Ability. It doesn't change the fact the basic playstyle is gated by the Aetherflow Ability CD and your ability to maintain the buff. You will learn more advanced techniques like what HP described as you get closer to 60 and the raid healing scene.

Anyway, AST and WHM definitely do not have something like Aetherflow that potentially lasts forever and affects healing.

AST does come the closest in that they can hold on to a buff card for an indefinite amount of time and release it when necessary. It is not a heal though, and once they hold on to it, they can't change it. If you are holding a card that buffs defense by 20%, you absolutely can't change it to a 20% damage buff without first spending it. Scholars can use any ability as long as they have 1 Aether Stack, so their ability is much more versatile than AST.

WHM simply have mp-based spells and a few abilities with longer or shorter CDs. There's nothing like a permanent buff or secondary resource to track. You either have enough MP or your ability is off CD. There is no "you need X stacks of this buff to use this Ability".

Tell us if you have any more questions or decide on a healer to try.

Something not me toned here yet which might be, or not be obvious. Scholars have a backseat healer in their fairy. Debending of the content this can mean few things. Healing in easier content is way more relaxed since to some amount the fairy can heal alone and the scholar can freely do damage and just fill in heals when necessary. In some content it let's you to be in two places at once, sort of. You can manually place your fairy to hang around the tank which let's you skip around the area as necessary either to dodge pretty colors, or to chase after people who need heals too. (The fairy is also immune to some Aoe effects.) In essence, if playing scholar it's good to learn to see fairy as a bit more than just another healing skill cooldown.

From what I'm gathering, each healing job has a different resource to manage their healing or abilities.
I see that WHM is straight to the point with MP, while AST and SCH's options are centered around their current resources.

I'll definitely take this advice. AST jumps out to me first, since I like the idea of the card gimmick. I'll probably try SCH then WHM.

The advanced content sounds exciting! I like that the SCH can adjust their playstyle on the fly and manipulate their pet usage.

The card gimmick is fun when you actually get to use it (since you don't get cards until lvl 30 you're stuck without them in low level dungeons), but if you're actually willing to give AST a try, I will suggest to be very patient until you hit lvl 45 at least, since that's when you get all your tools for card management. Until then, you might find yourself being frustrated with not getting any good cards ever :P

I've started my journey with Astrologian and will definitely be patient :) It seems like a fun and interesting class to master.

I did have a general healing question; is there a more effective way to target specific allies/enemies (PS4 Gamepad)? My usual approach, with Monk, is to hit my closest target, unless it was to eliminate a specific add. I can tell standing near an ally isn't always a viable option.

I don't use game pad myself but I've heard from a friend healer who uses it that there is some way to target people straight from the party list, I seem to recall it was mentioned to be down arrow and up arrow on cross button. Or something similar.

You basically press up and down on the controller to select through the list. Here is a reddit link with advice on how to use a controller.

Basically use up and down on the d-pad to cycle through party list.

For enemies you can use the left or right arrows on the d-pad. The better way, though, is to hold L1 and use the up and down arrows to cycle through the enemies on the enmity list

Another way is to hold Cross Bar buttons (L2 or R2) and cycle through enemies only with L1 and R1.
