P-Shaw. Nothing is going to die here. :P
I honestly couldn't take this seriously, mainly the:
"Because of Star Wars: The Old Republic"
The only valid point he has, is F2P did change the face of MMOs.
Eh, he didn't really say much of anything. Ignore.
Agreed.
Nobody is denying that we are going to lose some people, but they fall into one of three categories:
1) People who can't afford to pay due to reasons beyond their control
2) People who don't want to pay until the game is better
3) Nobody we're going to miss
For the most part, we aren't losing enough to make the game die, and while he brought up some good points, I think he underestimates the ability for SE to keep the game alive until the 2.0 release in which the REAL do or die moment will have come.
Oh boy, a bunch of people who don't know what they're talking about talking crap about a game they almost certainly haven't played based probably on information that's six months out of date!
...I don't think you have to worry about it. They wouldn't release a plan for the upgrade path to 2.0 unless it were more or less a fait accompli. Will SE probably lose "subscribers" to XIV in the year between 1.20 and 2.0 when it's pay to play? Yes. Will that actually hurt them? No, because current "subscribers" aren't contributing anything but (usually screechy and undeservedly negative and constantly-changing) criticism.
Any tl;dw versions available? AKA a script?
He is just like any other crying baby here that has to start asking their mommy to pay the monthly sub in a few months. Assuming he can't get his mom to do that, now he is trying to kill the game because he is raging on the inside. :D
really?...... first thing he spouts out is "Starwars OR" and then he talks about a bunch of free MMOs (most of which are Karen clone rpgs) and then he goes back to Starwars..... -.- He honestly has no clue.
Any "reporter" that starts their sentence with "I think" I ignore right away.
tl;dr version:
Charging will kill the game.
Some random person said it on the iinternet. Must be true!
More poor media for FFXIV, kinda sad.
Seriously, 8 out of 10 people in my linkshell is going to stay and pay. The other two will come back to at least try the free version just before 2.0. This game is nowhere near dying. If the community was that bad it would have been dead already. Yes, payment will scare off a few people and we will at least lose 20%-25% of the players, but it is not going to die.
To be honest, I was hoping he had something to back him up beyond "they are going to be charging for it"... was really hoping for something thought provoking.
I have no idea why I was but I was.
He is just a Star Wars geek, making his opinion out to be fact. Truth is he has probably never played FFXIV even if he claims so. He doesn't know how to open .pdf files.
the force is strong with this one...
I couldn't stand listening to the douche talk for more than a minute, so Ill respond to what I assume he said:
These would be valid pretend points if there were actually that many people playing to begin with The reality is that what little revenue that is generated by the re-institution of subscriptions won't be enough to cover development costs for the next year(let alone the previous). FFXIV will most likely continue being what it has been for a while now: premium beta.Quote:

So in other words, he's talking about cake and how it's a lie? That's good to know.
You mean some dude on a gamer site is already biased for a game so he bashes another to make his point? IMPOSSIBRU!
They don't have to cover the development costs. SE is not hurting for cash - if they were, they would have shut the game down. I think that SE expects that 2.0 will pay itself off after its released, and until then, they'll fund it.
What they do have to cover is the game's operating costs - upkeep on the servers, CS staff, etc. The stuff which it wouldn't be good business to just keep dumping money in for no return.
And no, random internet video guy doesn't have a point. He just has opinions. Just because he has a camera pointing at him doesn't mean his opinions are facts. The only facts in his entire speech were the number of active accounts he gave for other games, which are not even relevant to the topic. Of the players whom I've talked to in game, about four-out-of-five are staying. Of those who are leaving, more than half of them said they'd be leaving for TOR regardless of whether or not subscriptions happened here.
The game's not dying. There probably won't even be much of a difference. Sure, I only have anecdotal evidence to back that up, but Internet Video Guy has no evidence.
I think his predictions might actually be somewhat on the ball, minus the dying quickly part. It will be a very slow death because of how many fan-boys there are who would be willing to pay post 2.0 (which is nowhere near 4 million let alone 11 million)
People are entitled to their opinions, and I can't say his is unfounded. That being said, only time will tell. I'll be playing, at least.
I do find it strange that he claimed it would die a quickly. It's already over a year old with a pretty solid, dedicated fan base. I'm sticking around, and I'd wager that most of the currently active players will as well. If this game does die, it's going to be a long, drawn out affair.
I also thought his suggestion that players will jump ship for Star Wars was a little odd. I don't think there is a particularly large or noteworthy overlap between fans of Final Fantasy and Star Wars.
I suppose we'll see. I think XIV will be just fine, personally.
LOL Western gaming "journalism"
Lets get this SWTOR crap out of the way fast so we can concentrate on GW2 and TERA crap.
Hopefully all three are out by the time of 2.0 so the game can rerelease without this silliness.
this guy is a raging moron. F2p games have very limited lifespans and once they see drops in profits they bring the hurt to the players there is no such thing as f2p. It should be renamed Free-to-be-gimp or Pay-to-be-godly there is no inbetween in the F2p market. I'd rather pay a monthly fee and at least have a minute chance of being on a level playing field w/ other players.
I refuse to watch anything that can't even spell gamEr correctly.
I had enough of that nonsense in the 90's, thank you very much.
Leave it W-RPG fanboys to promote Western MMOs over J-RPGs. All I have to say for this video is:
"DERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRPPPP-Pop-"
Basically they don't care how many people subscribe. Some money is better than no money while they continue to fix it up for next year.Quote:

What's funny to me is nobody seems to comprehend that XIV could have literally no subscribers and it would continue to 2.0.
They've made the investment. If they can get a little bit of their money back, they're going to try. But regardless, I'm pretty sure this project isn't stopping, no matter how much crying is done.
I like how people can't deal with others opinions without ad hominem attacks *cough* Nuru *cough*
On topic, I wouldn't say the game is going to die, but I do think alot of people will leave. People claim there is a strong dedicated fanbase, but can you back that up with proof? I would like this game to succeed, and really hope it does, but I'm not going to blindly throw money at an inferior product where hardly any new content will be released before the game is to be relaunched. This seems to be the general consensus everywhere except on these forums, for obvious fanboy reasons.
Subjectively, it will be dead, to me at least, until 2.0 and it doesn't crash so often. Which ever comes first, or my rites of passage, whatever.
People will leave, and people will stay.
What I don't understand is why the critics make a big fuss out of it. The game's userbase is small as is, even if it gets smaller what exactly does it matter? If they think the game won't be profitable, here's a newsflash: the game will at least be more profitable than it is now.
For the past 13 months SE has not operated according the size of its playerbase. Why that would suddenly change now before 2.0 is even live is what I'd like to know. The game will lose players; and just like in September 2010, it doesn't matter. Ultimately they are saving the brand right now, not trying to make profit in the short-term.
More importantly, large companies manage their budgets for the next year around this time of the year. Lots of money is going into this project and the results of December 2011 won't change that (much). In the worst case they'll tune their 7th umbral era content quality to match the size of the playerbase.
Can you back up anything you just said with proof?
Specifically:-Hardly any new content will be released before the game is to be relaunched.
-This seems to be the general consensus everywhere except on these forums, for obvious fanboy reasonsbecause people on this forum actually play the game.
Not his fault for not knowing enough
