My main class is archer. My starting city is Limsa Lominsa. My secondary class is carpenter, to support archer.
Guilds for both are in Gridania... so I end up almost exclusively doing leves in Gridania, and since that's often what I have time for... I rarely see my homeland.
I don't like the forest. It's cramped. But I feel forced to spend my time there if I want to earn guild marks. Why? Because the only places you can get guild marks are the regions that correspond with the guilds. It's pretty damn arbitrary. (Not to mention that you don't get to pick which guild to get marks for, and if you do it on another class, you don't get the marks. That's another problem entirely)
Now grand companies are out. Once again.. I'd rather join Limsa. But it looks like the weapons for archer are linked with Ul'Dah. I like Ul'Dah better than Gridania, but still... why?
Making matters worse, there are caravan escorts and company leves, and they're ONLY in the regions that the grand companies reside in. I'm sure that the Grand Companies... being, you know... grand and all... have interests in regions beyond their native lands.
If I join Ul'Dah for a Grand Company to get at archer gear, I can't do grand company stuff in Limsa lands. Which forces me yet again to do content in regions I'd rather spend less time in.
In fact, the vast majority of my gametime is in the Black Shroud, followed by Thanalan, when my favorite two regions are Coerthas and La Noscea. And the guild marks being tied to region are almost exclusively to blame for this.
This needs to stop. I understand there are needs to incentivise people from not all picking the same region. There are MUCH better ways to do it. The different regions should be equally appealing on their own merits, not handicapped by artificial restrictions like this.
I don't see why the Limsa grand company only has caravans in Limsa. By the very nature of caravans, I'd expect to see caravans leaving Limsa and heading to other cities. Why aren't they there?
And why aren't company leves in other regions, either? It's great that there are all these new NPCs. But it's not great that they all tell me that since i'm not part of their grand company, I can't take part.
Grand Companies have been out for a little while now, and I still haven't joined one. I still don't have my own chocobo, and I'm not enjoying the content, which I'm sure is good, because I'm waiting (praying) to see more items added to each of the companies, so I won't feel obligated to pick based on class. And I would love to see these stupid region-locked events (despite identical events in other regions) go the way of the dodo bird.
Anyhow, that's a fair bit of ranting. I hope the devs take it to heart, because I do love this game. It's gorgeous. It has good gameplay. But I feel like I'm being forced to play a way I don't want to play, and the devs have said repeately that their goal is to make FFXIV the game that fits whoever's playing it like a glove, regardless of what their interest is.
Yoshi-P and company have done a fantastic job over the past year, with the exception of this one aspect. Please, please... stop artificially restricting where we enjoy content.

You can make far better weapons with materia than the ones you can get in the grand companies. Pick the company you like, the devs have said it a million times. They will balance out any rewards and add tradeable/sellable gear. Join Limsa and get a chocobo because the personal one seriously changes how you play the game.
You don't always have to do leves in one area either. You will literally be swimming in marks for crafting and you will eventually run out of stuff to buy on your archer, too. You will have more fun and get gil and more variety of rewards if you spread out. -

I totally agree.. the original intent of getting you out of Ul'Dah was good.. but for me it backfired, since Thaumaturge and Gladiator are there. So in addition to all the crappy levequests I did there leveling up Conjurer, I now have to see more of that forasaken landscape just to get my guildmarks. God, please make it stop.

I doubt SE really care, they did this so that people would stop gathering in Ul'dah and sometimes visit the other cities.
Takes 2 mins or less to get an airship to a different city, stop your whining.
As others have said after a while you end up with way too many guildmarks so its not something you have to do indefinitely, Yoshi-P also said choose the company you prefered the best as gear was not going to be resrticted to one company.
Aim for Ifrits weapon not a company one, and as someone else already stated crafted + materia are generally the best weapons in the game. -

I, on the other hand, like the LQ&Guild Mark system now.
Before, it was so hard for me to get lucky enough to find LQ that offers the Guild Marks that I want. Now I can get at least 6000 Guild marks from one trip because the very high possibility of Guild Marks LQs popping at the expected place. -

I agree that the devs needed to get people to roam around more and do things in the other cities. Hence the change to make guild marks only available in the cities hosting the associated guild. This was before we had airships and chocobos to ease travel between cities, which had greatly hindered players from easily getting around to try doing leves in other locations.
I do think it might be time to update the concept now that we have easier access. Why not have outpost caravans in other locations for each company? I agree that it is a quite tedious to only be able to do Grand Company leves in one region. A solution might be to extend into Mor Dhona and Coerthas and have caravans and leve options for ALL of the major cities/Companies available there.
Another option could be to reward some guild marks occasionally in the cities not hosting your guild, but continue to reward players for traveling to the host city by granting more guild marks when doing leves in the city hosting the guild.
While it is very true that you can eventually end up with thousands of extra guild marks, when you are forced to mainly do your leves in one region over and over again in order to earn enough marks to get a needed class ability, it gets very boring. I am currently repeating the same two leves in Limsa for the fishing guild so I can get my next level of Dowse. I never want to step foot on that same fishing ledge and catch those same bream again - but until I get enough marks, I am stuck heading back there. If there were more variety in leve options at each location, that would help - but we are all repeating the same tired and boring leves. We need more leves, we need new leves (for every class/category) and we need more interesting leves in new locations. -

It makes perfect sense why you only get guild marks from the city the guild is located in, so I completely disagree with you. They just need to let you get leve's from the guild itself, so you can specify which marks you want...because randomizing them is pretty dumb.

The guild location and what not from city to city is just fine in my opinion, Op is being somewhat petty from where I stand. Not to mention, its not difficult to earn all the GM you need te roll on. I hade every GM ability avaliable in THM/CON/GSM/MIN the second I finished my 36 quest. Bang it out then go to whatever location you desire.
Just goes to show you that no matter what they do in game, someone will take issue with it.
As to the all guilds in all cities idea someone mentioned, please don't do that SE, it is good the way it is. -

Like I said earlier, the Grand Company is mostly a personal choice. Pick Limsa since you like it so much and enjoy your chocobo. The company gear is bested easily by crafted gear + materia so that is another thing you won't have to factor into your decision.
I picked Ul'dah because I like the city's aesthetics, its music, and the grand company music even though my main is CNJ and so far no problems here. -

I have not gotten any guild marks since the update. I do all my leves in Uldah and Limsa. I am a pug and craft gld, weaver,
blk smith, and carpenter. So I should get marks all the time in Uldah but I don't. I go to Gridiana once in a while to see if I can get marks but I never see any there either. I was going to start a thread on this but never got around to it so was glad to see this one. Is anyone else having this problem? Am I not doing something right? -

I think it also have to do with how many classes are within the levels and what i meant by that is that;
Eg; all the classes are within the same level (eg. between 20-29) you might have a low chance to gain more Marks for a single class.
but if you have like one class that is above others (eg. Gladiator Lvl 30, other are between 20-29) you will get more Gladiator marks if you only choose the Leves level appropriate for it(eg. Lvl 30 GLA do Lvl 30 leves++) :) -

I do the crafting leves all the time even if they don't give me marks. I'm in the 20 range with all my crafts and I only do those and don't take the 25 so there is not a lot to pick from. Maybe I've just been unlucky I just haven't seen any in a long time. I didn't make it clear because I didn't know what to say but its not since the last update it was the update since they put the marks at the city guilds so I'm talking months that I haven't seen them. But again maybe its because I only can do the 20 leves and sometimes they don't even have those listed so the random might make it a very low rate to find and I just have been unlucky on the days I do them.
