What is a 'tank XD'? That aside, I'd prefer Samurai as a DPS as opposed to a tank. There aren't really any variants they could offer that would make it feel any different without being too reliant on altering team strategy. For instance, an ability that did more damage the lower your health was. You'd need to rewire like 70% of all Healer's out there to not spam cure on you to maximize things like that. On the other hand, since a DPS isn't a priority healing target the mechanic would be a bit more viable. Much like we don't need another healer at the moment, another tank seems just as unnecessary.
People are gonna say they want SAM as a DPS, but what if red mage releases at the same time as SAM?
If we end up having another tank with a sword, I would at least like their basic combo to use horizontal slashes (conal aoe) to set them apart. Sustained aoes that aren't a TP drain. And maybe an energy burst kind of thing that generates enmity over a huge range, like the sort of range heals and bard songs reach. Just thinking about how to make it really easy for new tank players to use.
Samurai is going to be a DPS class. I can't find where they discussed it directly right now, but it was in a live letter or an interview at one point.
As for what happens if they release it along side Red Mage. My money says Red Mage will be our next tanking class. I can't figure a better way to represent their theme of melee weapons, black magic and white magic. Making them a DPS or a healer will require they minimize one side of the magic and likely eliminate and melee action they would take part in. As a tank we get melee activity and maybe some weapon skils, Black magic could be ranged threat generators, DOTs, and maybe something like an energy shield that damages attackers hitting them. Meanwhile White magic can be represented in defensive buffs and self heals. Perhaps the En spells (Enfire, Enthunder, Etc...) can be stances.
Would prefer if we got another tank that didn't just use some type of sword tbh.
I don't really care what role it is as long as its a primary TP management job. Actual TP management and regens, not just press invigorate and be done.
I definitely wouldn't want another great sword tanking class. Samurai would be baller as a dps job, though.
As much as I would love Samurai as a tank job, (Log Horizon anyone?) we already have 2 tank jobs that utilize swords. And I would rather get a dps job that actually uses swords as well.
Where is my Time Mage already?????
I would like to see SAM as a parry tank. I think a mechanic similar to grease lightning would work for this by keeping the % rate up and thus being able to successfully mitigate damage.
It was brought up at one of the FanFest 2014s that when they were deciding between adding DRK and adding SAM for Heavensward, they chose to add DRK as a tank and leave SAM for a DD later on so as not to add two two-handed sword jobs at the same time. Since the two have similar weapons, they want to make them different roles.
just gonna leave this here.....

my preference on the next tank class ;P
who many times we need to repeat yoshi p say "samurai feels like a dps for him " not "samuri go to be a dps yes or yes" there is not confirmation at all, and 2 handed weapons? samurais can have a dual style too you know, is like if i say ninja is a oriental theme class and is dps, for that rule the next oriental class go to be tank or healer because you know to don't have 2 oriental classes in the same role.
yoshi can say misa, the entire devs team is how choose what class and what role go, samurai can be anything for now, don't say things how are not confirmed yet, je a samurai healer like sesshomaru in inuyasha XD.
It probably won't be. It's just a theory, but the odds are good that SE will follow the same formula with Heavensward as they did with A Realm Reborn (they seem to be so far). If they do, we can safely expect to get one Dps job release before the next expansion.
In ARR, we had all our starter jobs, but shortly before expansion came out SE gave us the Ninja. For HW we have 3 starter jobs (DRK, AST, and MCH). I'm expecting SE to release one additional Dps job before we reach 4.0. Given that HW has been full of "near-eastern" references, and we already had an event which introduced a Samurai character, the odds are good that Samurai will be the job they release before the end of this expansion. This would leave Red (or Blue) Mage for the roll out of 4.0.
Obviously, none of this is confirmed, but the pattern is there, and SE seems to be following it to the letter. So, if I were a betting man, this would seem like a pretty good place to lay down my money.
My bet is on a Caster DPS (or some sort of hybrid) would be next. SE likes balance - 3 tanks/3 healers, 2 ranged support types, 3 melee/ 2 caster DD's
I think rdm would be a cool tank Idea. I know it's not traditional... BUT! It has enspells for it's rapier like stances, it lends itself to damaging and healing magics. It would be weird to make Rdm anything outside a DPS with a rapier (mby 2?) or a Tank. It's almost like a Blue mage, outside it's magics being beast abilities.
Its suppose to be a whm blm hybrid with a few original spells. But if it were a healer everyone would be all, "But it can do dmg too!" and if it were a blm type dps, everyone would be all "BUT IT CAN HEAL TOO!" So Why not just use Fast cast as an excuse as to the reason it can insta cast Both healing and offensive magic in a tank role.
Samurai would be alright as a tank I guess, But I think it would be far cooler as just a regular DPS. I hope SE incorporates Skillchain like FFxi animations/abilities. Regardless I hope that gets worked in... That would make me so jazz hands.
Edit: Not to draw too much on ffxi. But Rdm was OPOP! it didn't fit super well into groups later on, but that class was more tanky than most tanks.
Can they use bows and spam sidewinder?
I believe it was said in one of the Live Letters or interviews that they won't be releasing any more jobs until next expansion.
Yep, found it: http://www.siliconera.com/2015/07/14...any-time-soon/
They said something similar before HW came out. Early Ninja speculation originally teased it to be a possible expansion job, but they rolled it out before HW. It would not be the first time that SE said one thing and did another, and everything is up in the air when they use uncertain terms like "probably."
That said, I wouldn't be surprised if they actually meant it this time. HW has a much shorter shelf life than ARR, so even if they wanted to release a new job before 4.0, they just might not have the time. In which case it makes sense for them to be using those uncertain terms. Better that then making promises they can't deliver on.
I've toyed with the concept of RDM as a tank myself, and I think a very cool idea would be to have it use primarily melee attacks in tank stance (along with protective white magic), but switch to a caster mode in its off-tank/damage stance (with mostly black magic and some melee attacks). That'd probably the best way to represent the RDM as a jack-of-all-trades, and would also give us a fairly unique job in general.
That was a really old old example.
For SAM as a DPS, they talked about it when DRK was revealed.
In the beginning, they wanted SAM as a Tank and DRK as a DPS. But since another "eastern-themed" job was released recently (Ninja), they decided to postpone SAM and focus on DRK...it also felt better with the mood in Heavensward.
But they really needed to add another tank, so they switched their initial role.
And that's why there is a very high probability that SAM would eventually be released as a DPS.
If it was a tank, though, I'd like something like mitigate+counter kind of tank. Several combos that put you in a counter stance for a few seconds, one for physical skill, one for magical skill, one for simple auto-attacks (Probably the enmity combo).
And you have to maintain these stances to keep your mitigation, while anticipating the stance you needed few GCD prior.
I always think of Samurais being defensive in a way since historically their helmets are given a curved design so that attacks to their heads are auto-parried. Also Samurai can use bows, so it'd be neat to see their AOE skill be similar to Archers Quick Noc.
Since they'll probably be added to the game as a DPS job, it would be neat if they had some sort Tank stance to switch into (kind of like how Summoner could break out Titan Egi sometimes.)
SAM would have the armor, stats and skills of a DPS so it couldn't really replace a tank defensively, but at least the stance would give it increased enmity so it could stand in while the party recovers.
I have an idea for SAM. It sorta brings back skill chains. Each of the SAM abilities combo off each other and whatever cobo you do will have an effect. Example:
Let's say SAM has 5 weaponskills, A, B, C, D, and E. They can combo any of the together for an effect. Example:
A+B inflicts slow. A+C Inflicts haste on SAM. A+B+C inflicts slow on the enemy and haste on the SAM. D + E inflicts poison. A + D inflicts paralyze, so A + D + E inflicts Paralyze and poison.
Each buff only lasts 6 - 7 secs so you will constantly have to reapply and only have enough time to put on like, 2 effects max.
Then again, this sounds alot like RDM that doesn't use spells. I dunno, just throwing stuff at the wall, seeing what sticks.
I'm hoping that Samurai will literally be able to switch between being an actual DPS and a tank with it's stances. And, just have it split off into two jobs at level 30, like, Shogun for the tank and Ronin as the DPS.
I expect Samurai to be a dps with original mechanics, slashing dmg and no positioning. It is exactly the concept that people need to be added in the game for a dps plus it was teased to be a dps from Yoshi.
If we're talking about parry tanking, I think RDM would be most suitable based on the idea that it would wield a Rapier and possibly a parrying dagger. Nothing parries better than that combo and having two weapons to parry multitudes of enemies? Bonus! Since fencing is alot of thrusting I'd imagine that it would be mostly piercing damage based. I don't know alot about FF history but I would assume it'd use White Magic to mitigate physical attacks (Stone Armour?) and Black Magic to mitigate magical attacks (Apocatastasis from BLM was the line of thought for this).
But yeah Rapier and Parrying Dagger. Get on it!
As for Samurais I'm of the same opinion that there are already enough Sword classes in general so perhaps they would use Naginatas instead as they historically would prefer? Would be the first Polearm type class for the sake of diversity. But it doesn't really matter too much since this is a fantasy game and people should be allowed to have their glorious nippon steel. It wouldn't be too far fetched for it to be the first class that uses a multitude of weapons instead: Main: Naginata/Bow, Second: Katana/Bow. In regards to whether or not it should be a Tank or DPS, I'm sure most of us would imagine them to be akin to knight's or other types of heavily armoured warriors that fight their foes head on in glorious combat. So it goes without saying that they'd be more ideal as tanks(the guys who fight at the front) rather than DPS(them dirty backstabbing ninjas y'know?). This is all just flavour preference and I wouldn't personally care if they were katana wielding DPS since I can see the appeal in it.
I don't know if this has been mentioned since I haven't read through the posts, so bare with me. I would love it if the Samarai was a tank, specifically, a 'Counter' tank. I means we have PLD as a mitigation tank, WAR as a damage tank and DRK as a PArry tank, so a tank that can return damage dealt to them would be kinda neat.
It could work by capping the countered damage to a certain maximum number and having it scale with the tanks vit.
To be fair all the Job Classes in BDFF work as intended and make sense as well.
