Repair items?

I'm lvl 17 and I've ten (10) items of dark matter which reads ""used to repair equipment lvls (1-10)", and whenever I attempt to repair any item a msg reads "you are not a high enough lvl to repair that item", also no matter what lvl the item is (</= lvl 10). What am I missing? :(

You need crafting classes to repair different types of gear

Namely, Carpenter, Armorer, weaver, Leatherworker and goldsmith, Oh Blacksmith too

When you hover over your item, it should list the "repair level" and a crafting class associated with it. That is the level the craft needs to be to repair the item.

does lower condition lowers the item effectiveness or does it just fall when it is 0%?

Just breaks at 0%. Anything above 0 is still working to full effect.

Just to clarify, when it hits 0%, you don't lose the item, it's just the effectiveness that "breaks" (as in you might as well be wearing nothing at all in that slot)

How/where do we get crafting classes? Must we complete a quest If so, will someone reply with the coords for my class?

You need to visit the various guilds for the crafting classes - and to actually be able to take on other classes you need to complete your starting class lvl10 quest - then it will allow you to take on other classes:
leatherworker - Gridania
carpenter - Gridania
goldsmith - Uldah
alchemist - Uldah
Weaver - Uldah
blacksmith - Limsa
armorer - Limsa
culinarian - Limsa

Also you need to have a specific level in each to be able to self repair.

The level to repair a piece of gear is 10 levels below the level to equip that piece of gear (well, except for items that are level 10 or below, in which case you just need level 1 of the corresponding craft). So if you can equip something at level 15, then you can repair it when you have the correct crafting class at level 5. If you can equip something at level 50, then you can repair it when you have the correct crafting class at level 40. When your crafting classes are level 50, you can repair any gear in the game (at least until another expansion raises the level cap above 60).

Each piece of gear identifies in its tooltip which class can repair it. If it's a craftable item, it will be the same class that makes it. (Or, if non-craftable, the class that makes similar types of gear.)

(It used to be that we had to actually switch to the appropriate crafting class to do the repairs, but they've changed that rule so that now we only need to have the appropriate crafting class unlocked and leveled to the required level. So long as we meet the requirements, we can do the repairs while on any class/job.)
