Ideas for Specialist System

okay, we know many people hate the specialist recipes because they gate items behind that system.

but what if all crafters can make the same items, but a specialist can make them better?

like every weaver / blacksmith / whatever can make this new shiny ilvl 230 gear but if a specialist make them they will have one additional safe materia slot?

an alchemist who can (again) craft 3 potions with one craft can craft 4 as a specialist out of the same materials and buffood from a specialist culinarian will last a few minutes longer.

such kind of stuff :O

I like the concept, having an extra 100% slot would be very valuable with for Grade 5 materia melding.
Alchemist specialist would have to have the potions last longer (like 3 seconds) or have a shorter recast timer for to be valuable.

But, this still leave the Armorer out in the cold due limit desirable utility of what it can craft. There are only some many Frying pans that can be made.
Now, if they made such changes are being discussed here and created balanced desirable crafts across all the DoH classes, this would have a chance.

i think it should not be a bonus that affect the end-product that much. a longer lasting potion or with shorter cooldown will affect the raiding-meta and will make the non-specialist items obsolete.

Brilliant! This change would make Specialists desirable, but incredibly far from mandatory. It would also be nice if Specialists had a bonus to forbidden melding - +10% meld success rate would be enough to make it worthwhile.

I'd also like it if Specialists had a flat boost to Craftsmanship and Control ratings for their recipes - say +25 or +50 apiece. That way, Specialists would have an easier time making the items in their crafting log, but the difference could be overcome with better gear/food/potions/FC actions/etc. Such a system would need to be tuned so that the highest rated items can eventually be crafted by everyone, but Specialists would have an easier time of it.

I will say that I think there are some recipes that should be locked to Specialists, but that they should be cosmetic only (housing items come to mind). That way Specialists still have something that is just for them to be able to make, but it's not something that would have any impact on the PvE game.

That's easy: give ARM (and LTW and WVR) the ability to create green 195/200 DoW/DoM armor that has sockets--and specialists get an extra free meld.

EDIT: All of these changes would assume that most recipes that are currently specialist-only are made available to all crafters, regardless of whether they have the right Soulstone equipped. It doesn't even make sense from a lore perspective - you are basically given a blank Soulstone, so these recipes are yours - you wouldn't suddenly forget how to make the things you've made just because you don't have the Soulstone that's been learning from you and only you. I can see it making repeated recipes easier (the more you make of a thing, the easier it is to make that thing), but not sucking the knowledge and technique required for certain recipes out of your mind when you don't have it in your Soulstone Pocket.

I understand your point regard the raiding-meta. I was suggesting options which in effect could (when maximized) only increase total DPS by like 0.5 - 1%. Which is generally an insignificant amount.
As for obsolete, not really, it will just mean less valuable on the MB. Normal quality food / potions / items still sell, just at a lower value than HQ. Specialist HQ would just be another tier above regular HQ.

I thought they got away from NQ, +1, +2 and +3 for a reason...

Specialist was for players that wanted to do one or two crafts, not all 8. At the start of 3.0 it gave skills to non-omni crafters which was its reason to exist. That has since changed. The system of forcing players to chose a limited number is stupid. I have pretty much stopped crafting and that was all I did in the 2.xx series. Anyone remember the master II book? Not easy to get but worth it. Master III, face roll easy and now with the specialist lockout.

Point is, as SE said and rolled out, the system was to help non omni crafting players and not to hurt omni crafters.

This system does not need to be saved, it needs to be scraped.

To be fair, it redefined what an omnicrafter is. Making a true omnicrafter rarer and harder to achieve. Which I do support.

As someone who would much rather not be forced into omnicrafting (but who likely will anyway due to the interconnected nature of material fabrication), I rather strongly disagree. I would very much like to be able to be competent as an ARM or BSM without having to level every other DoH class in the game to do so.

The system needs to be refined so that (1) the Specialist skills are able to be as potent as the omnicrafting skills, and (2) recipes are not restricted to only specialists. If those two things can be accomplished, the system can be saved. And really, those are very easy to fix.

I think they could do something with cooking like specialist could make double the recipe. Would making cooking specialist worth something then it is now that got like 2 specialist recipes.

Just give me one slot for materia in my Soul of the Specialist, the ability to overmeld it, and a meld cap for each stat of at least 8. That's all I want. :)

I would like to see the Specailist stone grant access to, as regular and not cross class, all the other 21 level 15, 37, and 50 cross class skills from the other seven classes. That would make Specialist stones valuable, allow people who only take one or two classes up past 5 to compete (in the things that they can get materials for), and not require people to level all the classes just to be a specialist in one or two.

Concurrent to that, kill the "specialist only" flag on all specialist recipes.

Make Whistle while you Work free, but usable once per craft.
Bam, Specialist is worth it.

If Specialists got their own slightly-better version of Steady Hands II, that would be worth it.

Example: Hands of the Specialist, Cost 30 CP, Improves action success rate by 35% for the next five steps.

Maybe they could make it impossible to make the items hq unless you're a specialist. That way I wouldn't have to pester people to make me pterodactyl leather, because screw paying 200k for it on the marketboard. If it's going to be like that, then I'm either asking a friend or not getting it at all, since it's only for glamour or sb gear anyway.
