Deceased player statue

I had posted this a while back but had never heard a response from a Dev so hoping to get one this time.

Back in Oct we had a long time friend (as far back as FFXI launch) pass away due to systic fibrosis. It would be nice if we could have a character model statue with his name engraved if you click it. Even if we have to pay for it on the mog station.

I'm sorry but I'm not with this. Mourn in your own way.. you and your friends are not stopped from doing an in-game memorial through RP but to ask the Devs to use resources for a memorial for some player only .01% of the playerbase even knows is sort of a waste.

Them putting it in Mogstation would be profiting off of someones passing. I don't put it too far from the Yugiri voice actress passing and having SE profit from that.

I highly doubt it would take up THAT many resources, Morbid. The data's already in the game, it's just a matter of assigning it to a miniature statue, I think.

I'm with Morbid. I think the Devs should stick with game affairs, and not be involved in the real life affairs of other players in such capacity. It's opening a massive can of worms that's best left untouched.

No I do get that part man. I'm not saying it would take months for them to complete something like that. The strongest issue for me honestly is just a corporation such as SE profiting from such a practice. This may say a little about the limitations of FFXIV and a sandbox like creation mode for furniture..

Ah. That makes sense.

While it is sad when a friend passes, there are most likely hundreds of players who have passed on. This is more than a small thing you are asking, it is not a one time, for one person thing. I realize you want to honor your friend, but personally I find this request a little morbid.

Well they could give us an editable(meaning dye it and customize what it says) headstone/memorial as garden furniture and it can be dedicated to the player or npc chosen by each individual. It seems a bit morbid, but I think that 1) it's a good compromise on something like this, 2) it would be beneficial to the players who want it, and 3) it could enhance the rp experience for some players(as some are currently using those massive garden rocks as memorials). They could be traditional western ones or "doman" ones, and craftable by GSM.

Outside furnishing headstone that can have something typed on it would be nice to implement and OP I feel for you, we found out a couple weeks ago our new born son is a carrier.

There's no nice way to say it really, but people generally play games to get away from the troubles in real life. So I would have to be against something quite so grim being implemented. Certain things should stay out of video games regardless of intentions.

And sorry for your loss btw.

To crc0427 and also ArkNova first off: I honestly feel for you two. A relative of mine was born with it and it was always horrible watching the parents helping that little one to deal with it. It's a terrible disease I wish upon noone.

While I do understand OP's longing for something to dedicate to said passed away friend and I see the upright and best intentions he has, I also see a lot of misuse coming along with a feature like the creative ideas everyone brought up. For example what ArkNova said with the outside furnishing headstone. It's a nice idea but in my head people are already creating graveyards in their gardens to make it look gothic, or spooky for halloween. Bringing that thought even further I see names of people that still are happily alive put on said item (looking at you cyberbullying). My very subjective point of view is that I would not feel comfortable with the possibilities a well intended feature like that could/can bring.

You don't have to get one if you don't want. Sometimes real life bleeds into games, this for example.

Simply a suggestion for the Dev team.

That could easily turn south with large amount of the player base, cause a person would have to die to get a statue? I could see people wanting a statue for other special events then. Birthdays, anniversaries or any other event some deems as a important event in their life. It opening a can of worms.

There was a really fun member of my old FC that stopped logging in one day, a few of us knew he was really sick as well. It's not like hime to just stop playing, being someone who played ffxi start to finish. We had to assume the worst given this, more than six months with no log in. Similar things have happened in other games. A person whom I used to play with committed suicide as well, he was always a high strung player who got fairly worked up over things, turned out he had some severe anxiety issues.

But the thing is, something like a headstone(editable or not) for your yard or a butsudan(ummmm it's like.....a family shrine for the home, for people who don't know) type item for indoors is all it would take. Those who /do/ want the item can get it. Those who don't can ignore it. Similar to how I find the flaming Ifrit head to be tacky, my neighbor loves it. He has one, and I don't. You don't have to want something in order to support those who do. Personally, I would use it for NPCs that I loved. not because I rp or anything, just because I felt a connection to those characters and would want to have a memorial. I think if it is something people can use and enjoy(in their own way, as everyone enjoys different things and mourns differently), it can be implemented without causing too much of a fuss. Remember what you wouldn't use, others might. There's no sense in barring people from things that would enhance their experience simply because you wouldn't use it. and while it /could/ have the potential for abuse, everything in this game does. otherwise we wouldn't have the vote kick option or many other things that so many people use and enjoy. abuse of an item like this /could/ count as harassment or griefing(maybe. might be reaching on the griefing charge), and would be a reportable offense.

tl;dr, I don't think a player statue is appropriate, but a memorial like a headstone or butsudan that could have personal meaning to those who use it could enhance the gameplay for some, and I'm all for that.

Hmm what AnnietheCat suggested in perfectly reasonable. They could even make it so that you could "engrave" the player names and by clicking on it people could see the list.

I think something along those lines would be a nice addition to the furnishings. I wouldn't want something so specific, but a more general memorial, perhaps with the ability to add a name to it, would be a nice item and useful. Whether to celebrate something or to remember something, with or without the ability to edit a name on, it could be used as a furnishing for any FC to commemorate something important to them.

That being said, not to sound callous, but I don't think it's appropriate to make a public spectacle of a personal loss. I don't know if this is the same person or someone else, but I've seen another topic on reddit about someone that a FC was close to dying. I am sorry for your loss, and I've also lost a couple of people I met online(XI as well), but I find it incredibly inappropriate to try to inform hundred of thousands of people who didn't even know this person that you're grieving. Thousands die every day in reality, and sometimes it will affect us and sometimes it won't. But to go out of your way to try to impact others by something that they shouldn't need to be burdened by is morbid, as another user put it.

I like the concept of creating a memorial so that we, as players and FCs, can remember something important to us. But things like this honestly don't belong in public forums, and I hope to whatever powers that may be that no one will call attention to my own death when that time comes.

Seeing a funeral procession on a main road in your town lets you, a stranger, know that people are mourning a loss. But you did let it be known that you don't approve of the way some people choose to grieve since it's "making a spectacle of someone's passing", and it came off judgmental. I realize this is a soundless medium and it should be taken at face value, but a generic "memorial" isn't the same as the original request, which is for a way to commemorate a player. This was a request for something very, very specific and those who don't like the idea really didn't have to make judge-y comments about how people grieve or remember someone they cared about.

People didn't need to bring such a personal request onto a public forum for a game developer with over 5,000,000(6m now?) copies sold. I'm not trying to say my post is any more appropriate than the original, but I don't believe it's any less appropriate either. This is a medium where we are (usually) allowed to voice our opinions, and I'm voicing mine. If it came off as judgmental, it's because of how strongly affected I am by this issue, but I am trying to keep my vitriol to a minimum.

Two to three months ago I was linked to a reddit post by people on my server, Diabolos, talking about someone on Hyperion who died. I just went through my history and double-checked, and it is indeed referencing the same person. I am sorry for anyone who is still grieving after a few months, and I've lost one person who made me feel that way as well. However, I don't really have any forgiveness for someone who is going out of their way to share personal misery with the rest of us.

The moment another person's grief becomes a grievance, inconvenience, or downer(lacked a better word, it's late for me) for those of us who haven't died yet or already been impacted by the loss, they have crossed a line. These individuals have personally crossed that line twice for me, and I bit my tongue the first time because it wasn't a repeat issue and it was on a very unofficial channel. But the second time, months later, compounded with the sheer audacity of asking for something so outrageous, is not acceptable to me.

I highly doubt that the individual who is no longer with us would enjoy knowing that others are being negatively impacted as a result of their passing, or knowing that the individuals they cared about are still hurting. But there is nothing positive to be gained from such a request here, it should have been sent through private channels or made neutral. If I was the type of person to contact moderators, I would have already asked for this topic to be locked or deleted, and I honestly doubt I would have met much resistance either.

I'm not the only person, on here or reddit, who has voiced my dislike of this topic, though I might be the only one to spend this much time elaborating on my views. This will be my last post on the topic though, as I'm pretty sure I've made my opinion and disapproval clear. If you or someone else wants to start a topic asking for a neutral memorial furnishing to be implemented for every player to utilize, I will gladly bump, like, and reply with approval to it. At this point though, I'm going to just let this topic drop.

This isn't the first time something like this has been requested, in fact it's even been requested on the Japanese forums(it's the only other forum I can read or participate in). It's cool that you don't like it. But if seeing someone's personal memorial to someone they cared about causes you that much distress, I advise you to seek help. Real life does bleed over into the game; real people play these characters and real people go through real life situations. Families have ways to commemorate the deceased, and even their real life friends too. But you make friends in game, sometimes friends for life. Someone expressing their grief has nothing to do with you, and you treating like it does is self centered and arrogant. So again, if merely seeing a memorial like the one requested(which could be used for rp purposes and have nothing to do with real life), you have the problem, not the rest of us.

edit: also, with 6 million copies sold, what makes you the authority on this topic? You don't act like this when people are grieving publicly offline, so is it just online that bothers you? Because telling someone that their grieving is inconveniencing you by being a "downer" is a dick move and you cross a massive line when you do it. You don't have the right to tell people that how they grieve is inappropriate just because you don't want to see it. Personally, if they weren't my friends I'm callous enough to say I don't care. But I support the right to grieve someone you loved in a way that is healthy for you on an individual level. And AGAIN, the fact that RPers have been requesting this item for a long while now means that many people who /do/ want this item won't be using it for real people. How does any of that have a single thing to do with you? If it causes you distress to see it, don't look at it. Don't read it. If memorials IRL don't bother you, then ones in a video game shouldn't either. It's the same damn thing except one is bad on the environment(hint: it's the one in real life because it takes up space that could be used for other things).

Tbh, I would say your overly defensive reaction to what she posted is a problem. I mean really, you are trying to turn a thread with a request like this into an internet fight. Her post wasn't offensive in the least. It was an opinion that she is free to express on theses forum.

Just as the request can be submitted to show that some people want something, others can voice how they don't want a feature.

Since when is not agreeing with someone vile. As has been said there is no downvote button so the only way to say you disagree with something is to post.

Also to others, A simple "I dont agree" wouldn't be suffice. That adds nothing to the conversation. If everyone just said, I agree or disagree there is no way at all to improve on parts that those people disagree on.

Thats all I can really see that one could even consider vile in this thread. All I can see is either ones saying they'd like it in polite way, ones saying they don't think it should be implemented, also in a polite way and then two people having a back and forth between themselves. I personally am not seeing anything vile.

Only one post was edited but they seemed to be supporting you. Why wasn't Andrea having a different opinion than you an option? Are we allowed to have different opinions?

I wouldn't get too upset over encountering the rare occurrence that is lack of empathy on the internet. You made your request, and I'm sure the necessary people will see it, and at least take note of the idea. What happens after that is up to the folks in charge. Whether or not they can meet your request, in one form or another, is out of our hands.

What I do know is that nothing will be accomplished by letting your emotions get the better you, getting upset, or resorting to name calling. You would do well to handle the situation with a bit more class. I'd say the memory of your friend deserves at least that much.

Good idea. Would be nice a character editing minion. So the minion would look like you character. And when you changed appearance the minion change it too.

Could you point out these "posts" that are vile?

Im not seeing them. I don't mean to cause offence.

I feel like people would use this more as a joke for raiders, like "oh the tank died on the first pull put the statue up of them" or roleplay or other things. I do not think it is a good idea. As it stands you could make a retainer that looks like the persons character and put it on the lawn if you really want a memorial thing.

You're probably right Titor, perhaps SE could make it for cancelled accounts or verify through family or something. It would jist be nice.
