Subscription dollars at work.
That's a little odd. I don't really like the voice used for the trailer - it doesn't really 'fit' the game. As for Lords of Verminion much like the Chocobo Races I saw an immense amount of interest during the first week or so and then after that there's rarely any players investing in them. I play on Balmung, one of the servers with the highest population. I hope that, in time, the situation is resolved so I suppose that could be why they've made this trailer? I would have preferred the time and money spent on making the in-game rewards more appealing though.
Did the tutorial --- > Thought it was an underwhelming activity with laughable rewards --- > No thank you.
And then you actually play the game.
I think the problem is there aren't enough rewards and goals associated with LoV (or Chocobo Races). It takes a lot of time to get a high pedigree chocobo for example and your reward is a title? A hat? And that's it. I think if these mini-games had more rewards to work toward we would see more of a community with them.
Rewards you say?
Titles: Princess/Prince of Verminion*100 player battle wins*, Lady/Gentleman of Verminion*300 player battle wins*
Minions: Clockwork Twinitania*24 challenges*, Shalloweye*50 matches*, Penguin Prince*win 4 tournaments with a double digit score*
You get about 350 mgp for each win? (someone clarify for me) you need 300 wins and 4 tornamemt wins. Now after you beat 300 players (possibly losing in between) I'd say 350 mgp X 450 wins/losses would give youuu 157,500 MGP, in which you can buy 1 dance and a fair priced cosmetic item or several cosmetic items and a new minion or two, or you could wait till you get around 160k to buy two dances. Yep, those rewards are worth it.
Part of the problem is MGP... They kind of messed it up IMO, you have a few small items to get with it, and that's great, but then you have massive grinds for things like Fenrir... You get the small items very quickly, then you're just left with one or two massive grinds that just kill the fun. Kind of a shame, too, because if you put everything that is in the Cash Shop in as a MGP item, you could fix that fairly easily... MGP should be the primary reward for anything in Gold Saucer, but there is just such a limited pool of prizes to pick from in the end...
Something like Chocobo Racing especially should be far more rewarding than it is, given how much of a grind it is. They either need to kill the grind or boost the rewards, because nobody is going to bother otherwise. Other than that, they just need to sort out tournaments. Tournaments are a great way to keep the content alive, it worked well for Triple Triad though that is much simpler than Verminion, but the rampant match fixing just erodes peoples interest. I do wonder why we never saw Chocobo Race Tournaments, but given Triple Triad is still handled horribly, I'm glad we never have...
Because one LoV "commercial" will solve all the issues with LoV and people will magically start playing it.
Well played, well played indeed.
EDIT:
Give us cross-server queues that will actually put us against players with +- same amount of rank points. Give us the ability to play tournament against NPCs too (less rankpoints rewarded ofc). Let us queue up outside of Gold Saucer and do something about the awful gameplay for gamepad. Then we can talk.
One question: was there really a strong demand for something like LoV to be added to the GS? RTS games aren't exactly known to be aimed at a casual audience. Perhaps a basic rock-paper-scissors battle system would've been better for it...
i think a "pokemon" system would have been better , since u will need to train minions , travel around the world fighting "minion masters" , maybe duel other ppl ....u can even add some type of training , where u control a pet for minigames to advance on speed , health and what not...
my main issue is that LOV is cool if u like RTS and even then ...the novelty wears off fast. and the content dies since is a 1v1...all that develop time is wasted....in 1-2 weeks.
I do think that a Pokemon system would have been far more popular with people. The allure to the RTS system of Verminion is that it allows one player to use many different types of minions at once, but that novelty is lost when you consider how soon the difficulty ramps up.
I agree, but partially. The Gold Saucer does have lots of stuff inside to gather players. Weekly Triple Triad tournaments, weekly and daily cactpots, FATEs, the myriad of video games, and the challenge logs devoted to all of them.
And then we have Lord of Veminion and Chocobo Racing, which are instanced activities, and really have no discernible reason to need the Gold Saucer as a base hub. I think the Gold Saucer stands well on its own, and that limiting these two activities to the zone only acts as a hindrance to everyone involved.
I hope they put GS content on the backburner for now, rather not have dev time wasted on content nobody actually bothers with.
I like GS content, but I think they need to keep things simple. Not everything needs to be its own gigantic meta-game, which is one reason I enjoy GATEs. Most of them are over in a span of ~3 minutes, and (aside from Skinchange, I dislike that one because some of the changes are so insignificant that it just becomes annoying to check each and every detail and try to remember...) for the most part they are all fun. Getting good at Verminion and Chocobo Racing takes lots of time and practice.
Same can be said for Triple Triad, but it has the luxury of allowing duties to drop cards and increase the chances of the player. As of yet, Triple Triad is probably the most popular and relevant game Gold Saucer has, despite Heavensward Areas having an overabundance of Random/Roulette rules and infuriatingly low drop rates. I hope that they take some time to rethink this as well.
Ultimately, my main point is that I think the primary lure of GS at this point is the smaller activities that players can do without much focus. Adding more ideas based on this idea would be good to build onto for the future.
Exactly this, and also crank up the MGP payout (for Choco Racing, too).
Separate -- You know what'd be an obvious idea for a GS attraction from the original, that funnily enough already has a community... a Battle Square.
Honestly though, I'd rather them fix problems with game, GS or otherwise, or sort out things in need of attention that they've already made, instead of making things like this that just add on to the problem and fluff pile.
Yeah a Battle Square system would be nice. A PvE sub-game in a PvE game, but no let's put a RTS instead...
Honestly seeing the previews I had a feeling I would dislike LoV and upon trying it I was correct. Its interesting but I admit id prefer pokemon style minion battles, or more interesting and actual small games to play with or against people
On a side note I swear I remember reading a while back that there was going to be some sort of Gold Saucer attraction that involved flying through rings in the air to score points. Am I just imagining things? I wonder if that would be more popular?
Apparently they had to make a trailer to get people interested? Is there a trailer for Triple Triad? ( honestly curious as this is by far the most popular Gold Saucer attraction )
Guess no one's playing it. Who woulda guessed . I have yet to meet a single person in game that likes LoV or thought it was a good idea. At least with chocobo racing I would get lukewarm responses about people's feelings over the attraction... I myself in fact enjoy it as well even though I can't queue outside Gold Saucer.
Please casuals, ask for more content no one is going to use after the first few days of its launch. /sarcasm
It worked well in the fact that I always see people playing Triple Triad when the Tournament is up, and no, they're not all cheating, I see plenty of people challenging strangers and NPCs. Perhaps that's just Cerberus though.
Like I said, they need to sort out the rampant cheating, but it's still fairly popular content regardless. Quite a nice amount of extra MGP/week from just beating an NPC, after all. It worked at getting people to play Triple Triad each week.
While, like I said, Verminion is more complex (and thus potentially off putting), I was more thinking about Tournaments for Chocobo Racing, though there are some things they could do to improve Verminion Tournaments. I actually think a Verminion Challenge Tournament would be quite interesting, rather than the PvP aspect of it.
They put it in because players clamored for it on the forums sooo.. no? If you go back far enough you'll find countless "We want minion battle mini games" posts. Yes it was SEs bad judgement in agreeing to do something so convoluted, but that doesn't detract that everyone comes to the forums to ask for the littlest things they want even if they have absolutely nothing to do with the game, or to the detriment to the game as a whole. You can see more than a handful of these genre of topics if you go back to the root of this forum right now.
To be fair there is a huge difference in asking for QoL changes ( like how they added toggling gathering skills while mounted, which was asked for and granted ), versus wasted countless development time on something like LoV ( LoV will always, from this point on, take development time away from the rest of the game. For every minion they add they have to take away from developing something else to make that minion capable of battle in LoV. It needs skills, actions and more animations... )
LoV is a virus set upon all of Eorzea and its future lol. Why? let's keep in mind that SE only budgets so much to FFXIV even though it rakes in dollars. This effects what can be developed and most of all the size of the dev team.
That's all I have to say about that...
This would be really cool.
I think mgp incentives and more exclusive rewards for the bigger games are necessary. Chocobo Racing and Verminion are huge time investments, and there just isn't really anything there to hook people if they don't absolutely love playing the minigame.
I enjoy chocobo racing and verminon, but I don't enjoy grinding them.
Special rules like TT has might keep the games fresh, too. Daily challenges that give unique rewards (10 pots of a rare dye for completing them?), restrictions for player matches, bonuses for completing certain tasks (+100 mgp if you break all 3 of your opponents gates, something like that?), anything to mix it up!
On golden saucer as a whole, can we please get some new GATEs? It's been a year, the current ones are getting a little stale.
