How do Server Economies differ so greatly, especially Legacy vs. Non-Legacy?

Hi All,

I am genuinely curious about how Server Economies differ so greatly, especially between Legacy (from 1.0 era) vs. Non-Legacy Servers?

One would think that Legacy Servers would have far more Gil amassed, because they've been around since 1.0, and wouldn't the prices / Gil flying around be far greater than Non-Legacy?

Yet, reading various posts from people talking about how they just sold some piece of furniture for Millions of Gil, or just asking friends on Non-Legacy Servers, I'm shocked at how in the world their Market Board / Economy is so much *more* expensive than Legacy servers? http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/i...s/confused.png

Wouldn't Non-Legacy Servers have less Gil, and as a result their prices would be far... cheaper than Legacy Servers?

I think you just answered your own question with this, people are greedy and greedy people (especially a certain group of spambots) tend to overprice stuff, and by definition, Non-Legacy servers are likely to have less veteran crafters crafting and selling their stuff. Supply and Demand comes into play here. Less veteran crafters means less competition which then means higher prices.

This might even apply to the non-crafted stuff like dungeon minions as there probably would be more players on a legacy server then non-legacy (Balmung being an extreme case)

The high-end market for crafts can sustain only so many crafters regardless of server, all the Legacy servers moreso than another other servers have a glut of max level crafters. This causes prices on many items to fall well below what is available on less contested markets. I'm one of the few people I know with maxed crafts/gathering on Marlboro so I can make a pretty decent profit with little effort due to minimal competition in the high end market.
On Hyperion my old FC had to really hustle day in and day out just to afford a medium house and I could easily make that gil solo in a week on a non-Legacy server if I put my mind to it. High-pop servers have upsides and downsides, and since I'm not really interested in raiding it's all downside to me at this point.

I think it's more a question of availability. Crafting hand in's for relic cost around 6 to 7 million on Siren whereas a server like Gilgamesh when i checked recently with an alt were closer to 3.5 million. I think the amount of gil isn't the issue so much as the people available to make the items.

Do legacy servers have as much impact from RMT bots as non-legacy servers? Because when you look at some of the biggest spenders, you'll realize that they are entirely unequipped to have legitimately acquired their funds in the first place. A guy who pays 30 million for a mercenary run through old content, who doesn't have any crafting classes, nor the in-game sense to have earned that money, is probably just paying RMT for his thrills. That gil gets channeled to legit players who sell runs, who then spend big money on things like relic weapons and glamour. Then that RMT money starts cycling around, and you end up with newer servers that have inflated economies.

When you look at the census data and see what items are harvested the most, and then consider how much vendor gil you get from those junk items, you can get a notion of just one way the RMT are pouring money into the game. 2015 census suggested that nearly 25 billion gil made its way into the economy just through the harvesting of Jade (a practically worthless item that sells for 11 gil and is probably easy to bot since it spawns only on one wall).

They might as well have labeled this powerpoint slide "Ways in which RMT are impacting the game".

We might also want to take into account that, by default, legacy players are at least a little more used to the MMO gameplay style than 2.0/3.0 players because of 1.0 experience, however expansive or limited that may be. The way I approached the marketboard when I first turned the game on was far different from what other people were doing; I wanted to keep low-level items necessary for progression cheap, but people were charging an arm and a leg for them. So far, I've not seen this change on non-legacy servers.

So perhaps legacy have an at least slightly better idea of how the marketboard should function versus how it could function?

People complain about not being able to make a character on legacy servers, I'm sure RMT have the same issue. Without that huge bot army creating gil from FATEs, dungeons, etc, the inflation is held down more than where they are rampant.

I don't know, I think it depends on which items you look at. Whenever something comes up here in the forums to compare prices, I always feel like laughing at the ridiculously low prices on other servers.
Especially with rare dyes and any kind of glamour item, other servers always tend to be cheaper ._.
I don't think it's dependent on legacy/non-legacy though. That difference should have evened out a long time ago already. Mainly because the actual amount of Gil people brought over from 1.x was about the same as what you get leveling from 1-50 for most people. Most people didn't have hundreds of millions in 1.x, and with only getting 1/10 of their original wealth in 2.0, that put most people down to 100-300k.
If I do Roulettes 2 days in a row as a tank, I get 100k just for that too. So that puts the amount of Gil from 1.x in comparison. It's a very, very small difference that maybe was a bit important right after ARR came out, but don't expect such a tiny amount of Gil to still affect an economy 3 years later :)

gil on 1.0 characters got reduced to 10% at ARR start.
I ended 1.23 with 20 million and started ARR with 2 million (I'm currently over 20m again ^^).

This is the only correct answer. There are higher supply (seeing as this is a game where everyone can do everything) so prices are lower.

However in places like Gilgamesh.. everything seems to be 3x more expensive than on something like Cactuar(probably an exaggeration..) but everything on Gilgamesh is suuuuuper expensive. So maybe that isn't an exaggeration. Dyes are almost un-buyable or probably simply undesirable to someone with limited gil. Its just too expensive. Everything.

Gilgamesh isn't legacy. It doesn't have thousands of people who began the game with all 50 in crafts and gatherers.

Now that I think about it on my Legacy server there are tons of Max Level Crafters (most of the Max Crafters I remember from the early days). It makes sense that if Legacy servers have so much competition it drives down prices.

(Same for Max Level Gatherers I suppose.)

And, yah, on Masamune at least there is very little RMT spam (it used to be hard to create a new character on this server as well).

Jpn servers in general are cheaper, being the game is super popular and NEET culture. 15HQ adamantine nuggets on Alexander JP only cost 60k, while on Hyperion its would have been 150k (almost 2x for a basic mat)

oh, if you only knew. cactuar is filled with gil buyers, making the standard price of ANYTHING stupid.

I actually adopt the legacy mindset when it comes to pricing things on the boards. 10K is a reasonable amount for a level 20 to spend on a high quality piece of gear. 15K is a reasonable amount for a level 30 to spend. And yet I routinely see idiots trying to charge 40-50K for a level 15 item. I mean, it's not like you can't makes those items for 500 gil from a vendor. Take your 500% gil markup and be glad for it.

It is partly server population (you can't make a character on a legacy server, only transfer to one so these servers aren't getting more people like other servers do) and partly server mentality. In the case of Gilgamesh, that is -the- prime raiding server in the NA pool. It's the main server for the world first race we have here, and because of that not only do people tend to have more gil but they're much more willing to spend large amounts on things top help them prep for or gear up to those races. Because of this people are going to take advantage and sell at higher prices.

You can create characters on legacy servers.
You can just not create characters 24h/day on full servers.
