Mailing stuff to alts

has there been any word lately on allowing people to send items freely to their alt characters on the same account? it would be really nice. i know this might be hard to do what with the friend list requirement for mailing, but maybe somehow alts could be automatically friended? idk

Exactly why they don't allow it :3

They if they let us do this they won't make money on everyone who has all the extra retainers... so it'll neeeever happen.

Your best bet is to find an FC that's generous enough to allow you to use a page on the CC to move items between characters. If you're logging and grabbing right away it shouldn't be a problem.... or you can ask a friend you trust to trade / or mail it back to you.

I understand its more convenient to just be able to mail yourself something but it wont happen, cause money.

Just buy a second account, friend yourself and bam! You can now mail stuff to yourself.

Considering you have to pay for your alts, it's not an unreasonable request.
For a paid service, the ability to make alts on the same server offers very little. Being able to 'friend' your alts or simply mail them would be a huge quality of life improvement.

While yes, the move to only allow you to mail people on your friend list was to prevent muling, it wasn't to force you into subscribing retainers. Subcription retainers wasn't a thing till months after 2.0 launched. It's intended to inconvenience RMT. XI muling was heavily used to launder gil as for the longest time there wasn't much of a limit on what you could mail outside of RA/EX items, nor to who as you manually wrote the name of who you were mailing. Understandably, RMT abused the hell out of that, millions of gil just circulating around like it's nobody's business. In this game they are trying to curb that with the mail system. I don't mind, really, but I never used mules in XI either. I had better things to spend $12 on than a character I'd never really use.

Some people actually use alts for reasons other than additional retainer storage. I have both a level 60 pally AuRa and a level 60 bard Cat. If I could use multiple races on one account I wouldn't use alts but we can't do that either. And for those who want additional retainers with alts they can still do it using a FC chest. It's not that hard just a bit inconvenient.

You can use Fantasia to change races whenever you feel like it.

I like using them whenever i feel like it. I actually use each of my alts every day. Fantasia isn't an option for me and it's pretty expensive to do that. Not only would be sending them stuff be nice but for them to actually have access to my home in Lavender and be able to use all the features that house has to offer.

Wanting to change your Character's appearance is not the reason most people make alts. Some people want to experience the story again, some of us just like having them, people who RP often have several.
Square charges us for them but getting things from one alt to another involves a lot of inconvenience and work-rounds, which is why we would like the option of being able to mail them.

This is also the reason I have an alt, it was to do story again. It's more fun to experience it all first hand vs going back and watching all the cutscenes.

Every other mmo allows this, but this doesnt.

This is the first MMO I have played that completely isolated alt characters. I always made heavy use of alts for various reasons, including doing story again, playing as a different race/gender, and yes, some muling at times. It really helps relieve boredom for me, which I can suffer from time to time, especially when I am subject to a lot of grinding. Between the terrible wardrobe system here and lack of ability to utilize alts (zero achievements/wardrobe carry over, unable to mail to, so no crafted gear, holding space, etc.), I'm beginning to wonder if this is the game for me.

Some say it's because of RMT. Yeah sure, we all know how well SE is dealing with the RMT issue. Give us the ability to use our own characters the way we want.

While that may have been their intent with 1.0/beginning of 2.0, clearly not being able to mail to alts hasn't affected the RMT gil flow negatively at all.
I literally had to B-list 5 RMT IN A ROW last night! Finally I just went /busy cause it was driving me crazy.

Not being able to mail to Alts isn't a road block for RMT, so SE should stop punishing the player base in the process & just allow it.

Out of curiosity, What would happen if your account was hacked/stolen and the thief made a new alt and then mailed everything not bound off the main to this new alt who then traded it all off to a third party and then finally deletes the alt AND the main.

Would that cause issues in tracking down the lost/stolen stuff from the main? Since the stuff got mailed to a character that only existed for the bare minimum time to get past the opening cutscene and then trade the stuff out.

True and not true at same time, as there is the entry sub that only $12.99 (for one month at a time only) that only allows 1 character there is the $14.99 sub that allows you have to have 8 characters which if person decides to pay 6 months at a time also only pays $12.99 so yes if you pay monthly you pay more for a standard account as opposed to entry account but you don't pay per alt like in some games like XI did.

This would fix the inventory problem. They could make cash shop items(like fantasia) bound to a character and other items bound to account to avoid loop holes of creating an alt to get a free fantasia.

I've been a bit of an "altoholic" in every game I've played. Had 10+ actively played characters in WoW and Swtor and cycled through enough alts in Aion that I was constantly at the 8 character max and got two full sets of armor (one on each faction) that required 5 members of each faction to get at all. Some were mostly for storage, some for gathering/crafting, several for RP, mostly different races, all so I could play through the game more than once in different ways.

Here, though, I can't mail stuff to alts, I can't share a bank with alts like I can in other games, and I have to go manually unlock every single teleport + bank + dungeon again. On one hand, that doesn't seem worth it to me. On the other, being limited to just one character is kinda boring.

This is the first game I've played where I've had this problem. I'm not at the point of considering quitting, since I love the game and there's a lot I haven't done yet, but it is a bit frustrating.

That like the same thing as paying for 6 extra retainers which is already available on mog station.

Or, you could mail your stuff to someone you trust (who has your alts in its friend list) to act as an intermediary for moving stuff over.

Well they obviously aren't going to say its for selling retainers....That would be business suicide to admit you want to make extra money by purposely restricting stuff. As far as combating RMT, look at WoW. How often do you get blasted in that game by RMT? Next to 0....just saying.

You can't really say that it "obviously hasn't hindered RMT significantly". There's no proof one way or the other. Yes they're still active, but there's no way to prove that they aren't less active than they would have been without the measures SE's taken already. RMT and all the spam and other bullshit that goes with it is just an unfortunate fact of life for a lot of games. :/

i can tho... i mean, they can easily set up an fc for the chars on teh same account and keep the fc chest open for transfers. this is easy to do. it's only inconvenient for regular players because they need to have permission in their fc to do so, otherwise they're stuck looking for a third party

I think the point OP is trying to make is that several other games handle RMT situations with more success (i.e. GW2/WoW, you'll rarely get in-game RMT notices in those games and they have populations equal to or more than this game currently). Moves like these are amateur if it was solely done for the responsive purpose.

Actually I did my math again, and SE is pretty clever haha.

1 Account: 2 Free Retainers. 3 Additional = 20 bucks.
2 Accounts: 4 Free Retainers. No addition = 28 bucks.

As someone already stated, "various" means they don't want to admit that it would hinder their money, right now they have people fooled and trapping them into buying retainers, allowing this will severly diminsh this. They could do it in FFXI because you had to pay for extra characters. so it's pretty clear. In no way would this stop or hinder rmt in anyway, because all they would do is use other characters to trade. I mean it wasn't even a good excuse.

and that Q&A said we would be able to change eye color in the barber shop, Which we still can't do.

all the "anti RMT" stuff in regard to alts is disingenious. If everything is under the same account (something they have no problem telling you if you try to use the MB to buy/sell to your alts) RMT obviously isn't happening. They should automatically add your alts to your friends list if they are part of the same account. They won't let alts share/access retainers you bought under the same account either. Very convenient for them, very inconvenient for us all.

Oh make your own FC, Voila! Free storage without Retainer and free transfer to your character anytime you want to.

Just have to find 3 people to help you sign and rank up the FC. You can paid people, then they can leave or kick them.

The other option is FC chest if your alts are in the same FC. I shuffle stuff between the chest all the time. Depending on how stuffed to the gils your company's chest is, it's actually MORE convenient since you can move more than 5 items at a time that way.

While this could of course be used by RMT they can easily get round it with multiple accounts, as they do. Developers make these ridiculous restrictions in the name of RMT, those that affects very little, but it affects players greatly.

SE, do you want to inconvenience RMT a little and upset players greatly?

Clearly their "effort" to curb RMT has resulted in zero effect, and they couldn't care less. Bots in the same areas doing the same things for months now, boths in Northern Thanalan following a very route every time, they move in herds. There's nothing stopping them from opening up a second mule account, hell there's likely dozens even in FFXI. A bot account isn't going to transfer gil to an alt as when the bot is banned, they lose all the gil, if they send it to several alternative accounts it would be significantly harder to track. The reality of it is nothing but them wanting to sell more retainers, otherwise it would have been patched in as a QoL sooner or later.

Then if you buy a retainer your alts get access to it as well. They can still get their money and stop giving us headaches.
