The AST Move Idea thread

Disclaimer: This is just a thread to suggest ideas for new Skills or Abilities for AST, not a thread for making it closer to WHM or SCH. Please try to be original with this. This is also a just for fun thread.

Okay so I want to see if anyone had new ideas for abilities for AST (like A way to flesh out the cards, maybe a sect that doesn't rip off its peers to the point of people wanting them to rip them off more, influences from other classes are fine :P) and to share my own.

My own ideas are

• Aspected Malefic: A nominal counterpart to Aspected Benefic, but with effects that are based on the card drawn, instead of the sect. 180 potency, DoT effect + mitigation or crowd control effects based on the card (DoT potency is 30)
• Crepuscular Sect: a Stance that replaces the Regen and Galvanize-esque effects with a Bloodbath-esque one. Allowing allies to drain HP from mobs with each attack
• Hyperion: A reversal of Wildfire. This is a buff placed a party member that stores part of the amount of health the target gets, and restores HP by that much when i is removes, Has synergy with Helios, Aspected Helios and SCH's Embrace for etymological reasons (Helios, Selene and Eos are Hyperion's kids) , but works well with other sources of healing, including Regen. Will not work with Benediction or Essential Dignity.
• Aspected Hyperion: The same, but applies the effect of the sect as a replacement (Noct's field will have a cap of 1500-2000 if applied that way, due to potentially high amount of HP restored this way)

I'd like to see another attack skill, and Aspect Malefic sounds good. I just don't think it should be related to the cards... It could have like 100 potency and apply a dot or a debuff depending on the sect though, and obviously should be instant. AST lack an instant damage skill (not a dot).

I really liked this Crepuscular thing - not as a whole sect, but as a skill. Being able to throw a bloodbath on someone and be able to 'Time Dilation' it, would be AWESOME!

As for hyperion: If it were time based (like you had 10sec to heal the target person) one more sect suggestion: In one sect, it could store a healing ammount and heal the target at the end and in the other it could burst in a small aoe damaging enemies around...

I liked your ideas, OP, it would be nice if they were used...

Nice ideas! I loved you Hyperion thing and the new Sect, although Astrology won't back you up in that.

I don't really have time to contribute anything meaningful before work, but I did want to comment that I like the general concept of this thread. In my opinion, the devs have (and will always) struggle to balance AST because of how they made it perform similarly to WHM and SCH in a vacuum. Well, I think the current "DPS check" meta of the raiding scene isn't helping either, but ultimately it feels to me like there was barely any attempt to be creative with the Astrologian job at all, minus a few select abilities, and that lack of creativity makes them VERY limited in the adjustments that they can make to the job going forward. At this point I'd love NOTHING more than a complete rework and overhaul of the job, but I just know it's not going to be done. :/ It really saddens me, because I loved the original concept the devs had put forward about AST, which was that it would be a more technical job to play healing-wise but that the buff system would be worth it. Imagine my disappointment when the skill list was revealed and the bulk of them were just Cure(Physick)/Cure II/Medica/Regen(Adlo)/Medica II(Succor)/Lustrate copies. The card concept was great, except the relatively punitive CDs on Draw and Draw-related functions is so long that most groups already play as though the card buffs in your arsenal don't exist.

I love the job, but I would have loved it more despite it's rocky start had it been it's own unique healer with it's own different healing method from the start.

tl;dr I love the idea of of brainstorming new mechanics and healing methods for AST but it also makes me depressed at how uncreative the actual job is by comparison.

I like the aspected malefic...
But i agree that pairing it with a card is not good, this means a 7 forms skill (or at least 4 if you see card as pair)
I think it should be an instant damage spell with a cooldown (15 sec)
Which give or could give the AST a bonus (next healing spell +10% potency or next damage spell +10% potency or +10% critical)
=> either a set buff that can be granted... Or to follow the RNGness of the card... A random buff
==> to be sadistic... Having a possible negative effect (-5% potency for 10 sec)

The crepusculum sect is marvellous! Yeah a third one that could give AST a new face !
But a drain effect... Isn't that the same as the war skill...
And it would be weird on caster XD
Like... Fire IV ! 12000 dmg critical... Drain 1200hp (supposed 10% leech effect) -> why do i bother healing ?

I figure I'd play along since I like the idea of new skills and "what ifs".

Guided Hand - Ability
Recast: 90s
Grants "Fated Draw". Next time the AST uses their "Draw" ability, they will draw the exact same card they drew previously.
Duration: 10s

Blessed by Fate - Ability
Recast: 120s
Grants "Blessed Draw". Next time the AST applies a card effect via "Draw" or "Spread", the card they apply will also be granted their "Royal Road" effect. This effect stacks with any existing Royal Road buff.
Duration: 10s

ie - If you used Blessed by Fate then use Balance (via Draw or Spread) while you already have an extend effect via Royal Road, whomever gets Balance'd will get the +50% potency bonus (since Balance gets Royal Road'd into Enhance) as well as the one minute duration from Extend.


Divergence - Ability
Recast: 60s
Range: 30y
Radius: 10y
Reduces all healing over time effects by you on target by 50%. Extends effect of all healing over time effects by you to party members around the target.
Duration: The time remaining on the original target's effects


[EDIT 2] This is a lot funner than I thought it would be. *Keeps contemplating*

Hmm why not have this

Draw
= draw a card and hold it infinitely until used
= royal road, spread are gone
= astrologian now have 2 card slots availible

Shuffle
= send 1 card in ur hand back to ur deck and draw anothet
= u pick the card u want to send back out of ur 3 slots
= shuffle will now cause the next card to be drawn to be more powerful, but is still random

Celestrial opposition
= no longer stuns
= allows you to place both cards held on all allies for 50% of there potency


Stella
= now is a dot that adds slow to the target but have cooldown

Malefic 1
= now effects malefic 2
= stacking buff once u hit 3 stacks, cause ur next malefic 2 to cost half the mp and is instant

Duirnal/nocturnal sect
= remove the hot/ shields
= have the sects benefit the group depending on the sect we are in
= the sect will effect certain spells and abilities for the astrologian depending on what sect they are in

Combustion - Ability (... I couldn't think of a better name >>; )
Recast: 45s
Consumes Combust and Combust II damage over time effects by you on target.
Potency: Equal to amount of potency remaining on the damage over time effects. Cannot exceed 400 potency.

ie. if 27s of Combust II and 15s of Combust remaining, it'll do (45 potency * 9 ticks) +(40 potency * 5 ticks) = 605 potency of damage. Since it's greater than 400, it's reduced to 400 potency of damage.


Eclipse - Spell
MP Cost: 631
Cast: 2.5s
Diurnal Sect: Deals fire damage over time.
Potency: 45
Duration: 21s
Nocturnal Sect: Deals unaspected damage with a potency of 260.

Grand Cross - Ability
Recast: 60s
Places Slow, Heavy and Blind on target and all enemies nearby for 10 seconds.

To give AST some mass-pull mitigation in line with Holystun and Shadowflare.

Alignment - Ability
Recast: 60s
Heal all nearby party members for 200 potency.
Diurnal Sect: Also gives a 50 potency HoT for 15 seconds.
Nocturnal Sect: Shields for 130% of amount healed.

For that AoE ohshit button we so desperately need.

Time Compression It's not that overpowered when you compare it to Ultimecia's version!
Cast: Instant
Recast: 120 seconds
Radius: 15y

Diurnal Sect Effect: Consumes regen effects you cast on party members and self, and instantly heals their remaining amount.
Nocturnal Sect Effect: Halves the remaining time on Nocturnal Barrier effects you cast on party members and self, and increases the damage nullified by 50%.

(I'd also dig if Time Dilation boosted a Nocturnal Barrier by 50-100% in a similar vein)

Mulligan - Ability
Range: 30y
Radius: 15y
Recast: 60.00s

Return currently drawn arcanum to your deck, cast a random arcanum on target at 50% potency, and extend effect to nearby targets. Ignores royal road (neither enhances nor expends RR)

You would use mulligan as you would shuffle, most likely after shuffle has yielded an unfavorable result. I see three ways this plays out:
Worst case scenario: you get a useless card for the third time in a row and now everyone is buffed by it. Party gets a good laugh
Likely Scenario: you get a card that's marginally useful. Since the card effect is expanded (hopefully party members were standing close), someone will gain some tangible benefit from the card effect.
Best case scenario: it's Balance and everyone celebrates.

The idea of this card is to increase the overall buff time of the AST cards. With bad draws, an AST can be endlessly discarding or RRing their draws. At least this way, the party gets some effect once in a while.

Sect would work on group give a group effect whilst ur in that current sect for example

Whilst in diurnal sect allies have a chance to make there next attack cost free (just a random idea to show what i mean)

P.S i just want astrologian to be a enchantress which plays by using buffs or enhancements or enfeeblements (would never happen but wishful thinking)

Your next Aspected Benefic will add both effects from Diurnal Sect and Nocturnal Sect. The shield value of Aspected Benefic is reduced to 90% (from 130%, to compensate for bigger potency).
Duration: 5 seconds.
Cooldown: 60 seconds. Starts upon ability activation.

Stacked Deck
Your next 3 Draws will have a 2 second cooldown. Additionally, resets the cooldown of Spread if no card is present.
Duration: 30 seconds.
Cooldown: 90 seconds. Starts upon buff consumption.

Cazimi
Consumes Combust and Combust 2 on the target, dealing 30% of the remaining damage to the target and anyone around it.
Range: 5y.
Cooldown: 40 seconds.

Falling Stars
Casting Malefic or Malefic II grants you a stack of Wish. Can hold up to 5 stacks of Wish at a time. Decreases the manacost of Malefic and Malefic II by 50%.
Buff Duration: 15 seconds.
Cooldown: 60 seconds.
Wish Duration: 45 seconds.

Wish Effect
Increases attack speed by 4% per stack. Additionally, the following spells consume a stack of Wish for an additional effect:
Benefic 2: Increases healing by 10%.
Aspected Helios: Lowers the cast time by 1.5s and the recast time by 1.0s. (Effectively 1.5s base now)
Aspected Benefic: Increases healing by 10% and lowers recast time by 2.0s.
Combust, Combust 2: Increases duration by 6 seconds.
Royal Road, Spread, Shuffle: Reduces the cooldown of Draw by 15 seconds.
Celestial Opposition: All affected allies will be healed for 150 potency.

Obviously overbearing if implemented all together, but Falling Stars + Stacked Deck could be interesting in hindsight. It isn't completely overbearing since Expanded RR would overwrite if used incorrectly and it forces the use of the 3 other card skills. Mostly looking at 4.0 more so than 3.0-3.X.
Idea for Falling Stars, from a healing perspective, is also to turn Malefic into a useful button to gain stacks on and give it a reason to put back on the bars.

I really like this thread! I thought about five different things, a healing spell and four skills that are related to the cards.

Constellation
Spell
2s cast time, 2.5 recast time
Range 30y

Restores target's HP.
Potency: 600
Additional Effect: after healing the target, the spell moves to the closest party member while losing 50 potency. This effect can happen a maximum of four times and the same target can't be hit twice. The spell won't move to any targets affected by Synastry.
Radius: 10y

This is an idea I got while checking WoW healing spells: there seems to be very interesting healing mechanics that jump from one target to the other, and this can fit the whole Astrological lore (stars that are grouped together by being close to one another). This is basically the AST's version of Cure III, with its own perks and problems. It starts as a 600 potency single target heal that will jump to a different target and heal him/her with 550 potency, then jumps again at 500 potency, until it hits its fifth final target with a 400 heal (a Benefic, basically). The total healing potency will be very high. The Synastry thing is there for a reason: every time Constellation jumps to a different target, it counts as a single target heal, so every hit will be able to interact with Synastry, healing the affected target each time it jumps. The maximum potency the Synastry target will receive is: 1200 (40% of each hit enhanced by 20%). This interaction wouldn't be possible if Constellation could jump to players affected by Synastry. The trade-off is: it can't jump to the caster.

Arcane Opposition
Skill
Instant cast, 60s cooldown
Replaces the card drawn by it's opposite in the arcanum. Opposition is determined by Royal Road effect affinity (The Balance is swapped by The Bole, The Arrow is swapped by The Spear and The Ewer is Swapped by the Spire).

Well, Royal Road groups cards in families, so why not allow us to swap them? This will eliminate some of the frustration of getting The Ewer when you need The Spire, for example.


Arcane Manipulation
Skill
Instant cast, 60s cooldown
Only works when a card is Held (on Spread). Returns the Spread card to your hand, allowing you to use it, Royal Road it or Shuffle it.
Additional Effect: if a card is Drawn when you use Arcane Manipulation, the cards will be swapped.

This will allow more control. There are several times (specially pre-pull when I'm setting my card opener) when I get The Arrow and I Spread it to use on my BLM, and then I'm hoping to Draw The Bole, the Spear or another Arrow to Enhance it or Extend it, but then I end up getting The Balance, which would be better for an AoE opener. This move will allow me to swap the cards and shuffle the Arrow that was held to try and get The Ewer or The Spire to Royal Road it. This will also allow the AST to use Spread to save a specific Royal Road buff and then swap it once you get the card you wish for (saving The Ewer and replacing it in your Spread by the Balance, once you get it).

Prediction
Skill
Instant cast, 15s cooldown
Predicts a future Draw based on the card Drawn at that moment. Execute the command to use the predicts card.

Additional Effect: when the predicted card is no longer active in the target, a detrimental effect is placed on the user depending on the card effect used. The detrimental effect will instantly consume the card related to the effect if it's Drawn or Shuffled in the future.

This can be seen as a different version of Spread. Spread basically "consumes" the Drawn card and stores it in another command for future use. Prediction, on the other hand, will simply copy the effect of the card you have on your hand, but it won't consume it, allowing you to basically cast two identical cards at the same time or simply cast one and store another to use in the future. The trade-off is that the card used with Prediction gets registered and it will prevent a future Draw (or Shuffle) of that same card. This is basically a way of "paying" for the card used in advance.

Providence
Skill
Instant cast, 120s cooldown

Wills a card to Prediction command. Can only be used when no card is stored in Prediction. Execute the command again to change the card. Cooldown is activated when 15s have elapsed or when the card is used.
Additional Effect: nullifies the detrimental effect of Prediction.

This is simple: allows you to select a card every two minutes to add it to your Prediction command, free of charge.

This...is game breaking in the best way possible. Basically, being able to have more control - 60 sec cooldown is fair. Again, considering the class is suppose to be a support/buff class, adding more abilities that make them do their job efficiently is exactly what they need right now.

Distortion of time and space:
Channel 6sec, share cd with time dilation.

The target doesn't receive damage while channeling but will receive all the damage(dot) in the end with a 10% damage reduced.
The dot remains 15 sec and can't be cleansed.

And maybe a shield like "Give a regen when the shield is broken while in nocturnal sect"
Example: 150 potency shield with a total 150 potency healing during 15 sec"

Quincunx
Uses up a players Drawn/Spread card to inflict a select target with a status effect for 25 seconds. A target can only have one Quincunx effect on them at a time and will be immune to Quincunx for 90 seconds once the effect has lifted. Spread cards has priority over Drawn cards. Instant cast time. 120 second recast.
Bole: Decrease the target's Damage by 10%.
Balance: Increase Damage done onto the target by 10%.
Arrow: Any party member that is with in 8 yalms of the affected target will have their Attack Speed increased by 4%.
Spear: Increase the likelihood of the target getting hit by a Critical attack by 10%.
Spire: Any party member that damages the affected target will receive 50 TP.
Ewer: Any party member that damages the affected target will recover 5% of their MP.

Medium Coeli
Use up the user's Drawn card to restore 10% of their MP. Instant cast time. 90 second recast.

Bhāvas
Places a 7 yalm star chart in a designated area that increases the MP and TP recovery rate of all party members within it by 25% for 15 seconds. While this effect is up, the user cannot Draw cards and/or use drawn or Spread card effects. Shares cooldown with Celestial Unconscious. Instant cast time. 90 second recast.

Trine
Places a barrier on a party member that effect varies depending on what Sect the user is in for 21 seconds. Instant cast time. 60 second recast.
Diurnal: The barrier converts 25% of damage the affected receives in HP.
Nocturnal: The barrier damages any enemy that damages the affected. Potency of 80.

Celestial Retrograde
Can only be used while the user is under the effect of a Sect. Switches the user's Sect to the other. Instant cast time. 90 second recast.

This is one of the dreams of every AST: be able to change the Sects. But I feel like SE could allow us to switch Sects on the skills themselves, while adding a 90s cooldown, instead of "burning" a new skill just for that. If it's an inconvenience to have two slots occupied on the hotbar, we could simply get an extra level 50 skill (like WHMs got Stoneskin 2) to swap sects. I feel like we need something more out of it if we're going to get an exclusive skill just for that. Anyway, that's a good idea :)

A lot of the ideas in here are nice, but some of them would be better on the WHM or SCH toolkit in my opinion. I think that the spells and skills the three healers have so far cover all healing contingencies, so the next spells/skills should be focused on what each healer should be specialized. Or SE could add a spec system inside each job, with a set of skills we could choose from.

This is probably the class to do this. It's both speed-healing and a buff (sorta).

Yeah, that's what I feel SE should/will do. We have to see how many skills we'll get on the new level cap though. But I'm all in for different ideas; that's just my opinion.

Okay. Let's give this another go then, and to keep the thread alive 'n going.

Sextile
Create a field on target location using the currently drawn arcanum, consuming it. Anyone within the field will be granted the effect of the arcanum.
Radius: 8y.
Duration: 15s.
Cooldown: 60s.
Rather than incorporating this within CU, I feel they would be better kept apart. This way, the AST has more freedom and CU isn't overloaded as a 'be all end all' ability. Could optionally see this together with Royal Road, so it would be very strong with enhanced or extended RR (where as expanded seems to be the go-to right now by most ASTs).

Time Preservation
Manipulates time around the target, extending any beneficial effects by 3 seconds. Effect ends upon using another action or moving.
Range: 30y
Cooldown: 15 seconds.
Duration: 15 seconds.
To emphasize more of the time-manipulation aspect of AST. Instead of simply increasing mp regeneration through drawing Ewer over and over (more Draws/minute) or other methods, or make them deal more damage/do more healing passively, AST gets a CU-like channel that is a bit friendlier and user-centered in use and allow them to do something in their downtime without necessarily having to switch into Cleric Stance.. Given, would be a little complex to use properly and the area between OP and lackluster is a bit small. Basically a less fire-and-forget version of TD, but with bigger payoffs when used properly.

Fated Moment
Recast time and remaining recast time of Draw, Royal Road, Spread and Shuffle are lowered to 1 second. Effect disappears when a drawn or held card is used twice,
Cooldown: 2 minutes.
Duration: 20 seconds.
Basically, you get to go completely nuts with cards for the next 20 seconds but once you use Draw/Spread to buff more than once, the buff ends early. So do exactly that: go wild! Set your spread, set your desired Royal Road, put down an AoE card and prepare another one while it is ticking down! Also maybe no more insane long wait times to get your desired Spread + RR before a pull, maybe?

I agree that something like this would fit AST extremely well, but 120s for what is basically Holmgang on a stick? Yeah, no. 4-5 mins at the very least for this, this is OP even with the weakness debuff.


Anyway, here's my take with a similar concept (though it probably also requires tweaking to not be broken):

Turn Back Time
Ability | Recast: 150s | Range: 15y
Places Temporal Distortion on target party member and all party members around them (Duration: 5s). When Temporal Distortion runs out, and the affected player's HP is lower than their HP when they gained Temporal Distortion, they gain an amount of HP equal to the difference, up to a maximum of 50% of their maximum HP.

Just figured I'd fire a few more over here that would be interseting.

Celestial Congregation - Ability
Recast: 90s
Both Sects can be active at the same time. If Diurnal Sect is active, gain Nocturnal Sect. If Nocturnal Sect is active, gain Diurnal Sect
Duration: 15s


Kismit - Trait
Grants a 25% chance when the drawn arcanum is used with Draw, Spread, or Royal Road, it will reset the recast of Draw.


Tempting Fate - Ability
Recast: 1s
Discards the currently drawn arcanum and gain a stack of "Tempting Fate" up to a maximum of two. Reduces the recast of Draw by 10 seconds for each stack of "Tempting Fate" for a maximum of 20s reduction.


Arcanic Providence - Ability
Recast: 1s
Consumes the current card enhancing effect to augment the AST's healing.
Enhance Consumed: Increases healing potency by 15%.
Extend Consumed: Your next healing over time spell or ability has its duration increased by 9s (If an area of effect healing over time used, all healing over time effects will be extended)
Expand Consumed: Your next healing spell will heal all party members within 6y of the target party member at 50% potency (target of the spell will still receive 100% potency)
Duration: 15s

This thread is awesome.

Really love some of the ideas, not because they are all simply useful but because they capture the flavour of AST.

Ok so I will have a go.

Seventh Gate: Wild (Diurnal)
Seventh Gate: Abyss (Nocturnal)

Naturally ability changes style for each sect, but does the same thing.

Recast: 60s (during this recast time no cards can be added to the Seventh Gate.)
Each time you Cast or Royal Road a card a portion of its power is sealed within the Seventh Gate. (Only works in Combat)
Activate Seventh Gate to unleash all card effects upon a single target for half their original duration. These card effects overwrite all other cards and cannot be overwritten by any other card. Effected by Royal Road. (so can be expanded, extended etc)
So in Diurnal if it stored Spear and Balance, your target would get Wild Spear and Wild Balance. In Nocturnal they would get Abyss Spear and Abyss Balance.

Additional Effect: If all six card effects are stored within the Seventh Gate all cards unleashed by Seventh Gate are effected by Expanded, Extended and Enhanced Royal Road at the same time.

Basically another way to manipulate your buffs and the only way to stack card effects with each other.

I also envision the casting animations change depending on Sect to fit the mood of each ability.

Would it be overpowered as hell? Yes! fun though :D!
