Emergencies can be planned ahead of time?

Anyone else find it funny that maintenance tonight was listed as "emergency" maintenance? Even though they had it listed as they were doing it more then 12 hours in advance. I thought I would just stick that out there cause I found it funny. The image was attached to a tweet which is why is has the #FFXIV in the image.

Later: This thread was a joke. But people seem to get their panties in a bunch and take it way too seriously.

Emergency has different connotations when applied to maintenance though. By "emergency" they mean "we want to hotfix something before the normal patch day (perhaps because it's potentially game-breaking?)," not "because someone's life is in jeopardy."

Here's hoping it's a Duty Finder fix, cause that's been a real bear.

I am thinking they've hopefully found a fix for the Duty Finder which is working under their testing so it would be an emergency maintenance to apply the fix and make the duty finder pops a lot more frequent now :D

They knew what to fix but were waiting over the weekend to make sure they had it right I believe...that said I thought they would wait till their usually hotfix day, maybe they did find something else that made them decide to do it now?

I was more pointing out that I would list emergency maintenance as "hey sorry for no notice or warning but we got to shut down the servers in 30 minutes to fix something"

Emergency maintenance is basically something that's unscheduled, it doesnt have to be like 1 hr before it happens they can announce emergency maintenance like 1-2 days ahead of time.

You just answered your own question...

This maintenance was...

"unexpected"

SE felt the problem needing fixing was

"serious"

and

"required immediate action"

which 24 hr notice is typically considered immediate for these situations, immediate is a very flexible word since I could say immediately and mean right now or say I need to leave immediately and mean tomorrow.

I think its more SE has a certain amount of time a year (as proposed by an SLA) that the servers have to be up, then downtime for proper server failures etc. Then anyhing outside of this requires them to post about it to warn the customer that there will be maintenance and they must give X amount of hours notice.

I've worked with this sort of stuff server downtime etc. I imagine it would be the same for SE.

I don't think you can plan ahead emergencies. They are called a emergency for a reason. It's like getting hit by a car, but has something important to do that day. The person has to go to the hospital and misses the important thing he had to do. The way you're saying it the person should've planned ahead to get hit on a different day.

Emergency in this instance doesn't mean life or death. Simply put, it means: "We found an issue, so we are scheduling time outside of patch intervals to address it." In the realm of IT, an event occurring between scheduled Maintenance times are deemed "Emergency" so that people take note of it and give it the urgency it deserves.

With the exception of servers just shutting off. All these events need to be planned and scheduled regardless of severity. Otherwise, SE will get a backlash of customers complaints, that can go up the food chain and cause people to lose their jobs.

You want it more that they turn off the servers before giving out infos and warnings?

sure you can. you get hit by a car and the ambulance comes and takes you to an emergency room. they might stop the bleeding in the ER that doesn't mean you go straight to the OR. maintenance is the operation, you can still have that scheduled after diagnosing the problem.

Between all the threads calling for compensation for planned maintenances, more notice of when maintenances occur and maintenances taking too long, the topic of emergency maintenances getting too much prior notice seems... counter-intuitive. I mean, there really was a thread asking for more notice of upcoming patches... And here we are, timely notice of an upcoming patch and a fairly urgent patch at that, and it's considered too much notice by the originator. Can't win them all, eh Square...

I edited the post later which people after that seem to not read as it was stated it was aimed to be more of a joke thread which people found no humor in and took way to seriously. I posted it here cause shared it online in the game and as some did point out like other did in this thread they also saw the humor in it also which no one here did.

With as much as what seems to be jokes are actually dead serious OPs, can you blame us? :D

Perhaps they could have used "Critical Maintenance" instead...may have some weird translation issues though, who knows.

Either way it is unscheduled maintenance. For such instances it is not uncommon to refer to them as emergency. The wording may seem a bit strong, but it has a purpose. This is not something they wanted to hold off on any longer than they could. Once QA testing was complete they wanted to put it out there for us as soon as reasonably possible--and that meant scheduling it where it might impact the playerbase the least.

Imagine the $h!t -storm if they completed testing and took things down for 5 hours Saturday or Sunday during a more universal primetime. The time chosen was a compromise.

Unfortunately OP, everyone signed a contract that the Devs can and will shut down servers at any point in time.

This is written in the ToS.

5. INTERRUPTION TO THE SERVICE

From time to time, in order to provide our customers with the optimal gaming experience, it is necessary for Square Enix to conduct routine maintenance on the computers and/or servers that support the Game. During these times, access to the Game or support services may be interrupted. Access may also be temporarily suspended in whole or in part, without notice, due to emergency repairs, fire, flood, explosion, war, strike, embargo, governmental action or failure to act, the act of any civil or military authority, act of God, or by any other causes beyond Square Enix's control, or any other reasons for which Square Enix, in its sole discretion, deems that temporary suspension is necessary. You acknowledge that disruptions of service may occur and waive any causes of action against Square Enix in any way arising from or related to any such disruptions of service.

So suck it up and go outside.

IE. Technically by complaining you are going against ToS and you can get banned.
