Do you think square enix will continue making new MMOs after this project?

As the title states, do you think square enix will have more MMOs on the market one day or do you think they will stick to one product ala Blizzard and WoW.

edit: also how would you feel as a player if square enix made a new final fantasy mmo while you were still playing FF14?

Square will stick with FFXIV for a long time. Remember they had FFXI for many years. It will take many years for a newer online FF. The market will change till then and things will be really different by then. It is more profitable to stick with 1 good MMORPG than throwing money on a new which may fail. FF14 2.0 was a success and now they need to maintain that success. So no do not expect a new online FF for the next couple of years.

It's much too early to think about yet another FF mmo.
Maybe it would be something to think about in about five years from now, but I think I'd rather see them turn another franchise into MMO.

SE already has 3 active MMO titles on the market

Final Fantasy XI
Final Fantasy XIV
Dragon Quest X

So they already aren't staying with just one MMO project currently, and 2 out of 3 of those games are Final Fantasy titles.

In the long run, I would hope they do, but that would probably depend on the market at that point in time and whether or not the company wanted to continue with Mmo's or go in another direction by then.

If they started reorganizing dev teams and gearing up for a new mmo project while I'm still playing and enjoying this one, i'd probably feel a little bit abandoned but I'd get over it, pretty much how I felt last time they did this. If anything, I'd probably be a little quicker to give the new one a try and see how I like it.

Yeah that's true but what about Parasite Eve or Kingdom Hearts, etc. These are the two series that come to my mind.

I doubt it MMOs are no longer what they once were. MOBAs are the new money maker so maybe an SE MOBA that has FF and other SE franchises, akin to Blizzard's Heroes of the Storm.

Replying to the OP, I'm sure they will. Even if SE doesn't make a new dev team, if Yoshida is still around, he will probably make a new one. He clearly stated that he loves MMO's and FF, that's why he commandeered the sinking SS1.0 ship.
One day, maybe in another few years, FFXI will finally come to a close. Maybe then if FFXIV's assets are big enough, a new project may begin.

But hey, I'm a optimist :)

No I don't see them making a new one for a long time.

On another topic though I can see more stuff getting added to this cause once FFXI finally closes most likely the staff will be going here.

I'd have to say that, as far as MMOs go, WoW is the exceptional outlier. And as for Blizzard, WoW's staff alone is massive. I'm willing to wager that it's several times larger than the staff that works on XIV and XI combined.

I don't know how financially well off SE is to consider adding another MMO developing staff. Right now, I'm leaning on that while they are doing fairly well right now, they're in no state to do such a thing.

It's kind of early, but if they do decide that. I hope they they give it the FFXV battle system. It's not over the top in a way of kingdom hearts, but it is something that could work in a mmo.

They'll stick with this as long as it remains popular.

FFXI wasn't overly popular, so they moved on.

And yet, it still takes blizzard over half a year to make a content patch...

I prefer to see another SE fanchise get a MMORPG, but yeah if the game keeps being this good (for SE pockets) then yeah, I reckon we might see a new type of FF MMO in 9-10 years.

They also had a fourth MMORPG as well - Front Mission Online, but it was shutdown ages ago. And that also doesn't include Fantasy Earth Zero which SE developed on behalf of another publisher (which they then relinquished all control over), but that too was shut down, so I guess that doesn't really count. ;)

i would think, with the older style of mmos going out (not the p2p mode, thats doing just fine) squre would in the future do a more modern style mmo. with live action combat so to speak. they have the ability. and im fairly sure theyd get a VERY large crowd. and they DEFINITEly would not go f2p lol. for multiple reasons. one, as the history shows. pay to play, while, as the name states, requires payment, in the end, lasts longer, and is a far better investment. more free to play mmos have shut down, then ANY of the mmos that have used the p2p model. it wont happen soon, as ffxiv is still a very large source of income or them, but, it will likely happen.

The fact that FF14ARR hasn't won any type of award since it has been out compared to XI I can see SE closing the servers down in 6 years time and during that time they will start working on the next MMORPG for the Japanese market which will then come out in the western side of the world. This game will not last as long as 11 did.

The problem mmos have now is there 2 short term and the development /progression isn't lasting or rewarding. What you do this patch means nothing In the next one. The gear you get today is junk tomorrow. All of that stuff.

Yoshi said in a recent article there aren't many new mmos coming out these days and that's because research says players aren't interested any more. They'll pick up an mmo blast it for a couple of months and drop it. The current generation of mmos lacks longevity and meaningful progression and thus doesn't keep players interested.

You can see it with 14. It's done well with sales but sucks in player retention.

Compare it to xi for example. Which had about 2.5 million sales but kept a sustained player base of about 500 thousand active players for a good number of years.

Xiv 14 has what 7-8 million sales and recent figures suggest maybe 300k active players.

Players just don't stick around in mmos anymore because there's no longevity to them. Even the biggest one wow. Ppl drop there subs for a year. Come back blast the new stuff for a month or 2 and drop there subs for the rest of the year... no longevity at all.

And it's part of why developers aren't interested in making new mmos.

What are you smoking? They've got loads of awards because of XIV...

FF14 has gotten tonnes of awards.

MMOs in general are less popular today both with players and investors. MMOs are usually big time sinks and for whatever reason people have less time today to invest in them even with the streamlining modern MMOs get. The other side of the coin is that MMOs are high risk investments, requiring a very large upfront cost to created, substancial infrastructure to run, a dedicated development team and sustained costs for further development and upkeep. Comparatively other game types, such as Mobile games, have small cost to produce and tend to provide a much higher return on investment, at least ratio wise.

Case in point would be Hearthstone and WoW. Hearthstone costed Blizzard a tiny amount of money to make with a team of only 20 people and its earnings last year were a sizable chunk of Blizzard's profits. Further development is also relatively cheap. It might not have made as much money as WoW but WoW is an established game and an outlier for MMOs in its popularity and even then Hearthstone still a major earner for Blizzard. Even FF14 only has a fraction of WoW's playerbase.

As a result I wouldn't expect another MMO from SE any time soon. At earliest not for another 10 years. Hell even producing a new MMO would take a good 5 years minimum.

I dunno why people say MMOs are a dying breed. You can't account WoW's success as part of an MMO market. There was never an explosion of successful MMOs because, for some reason, WoW didn't add to the MMO market. It just created a WoW market for some reason.

Those 100 million accounts WoW has didn't go off to play other, more personally suitable games. The just quit the genre entirely.

Actually, they did. MMO statistics have been on a substantial decline for years. Look at the sheer number of big budget MMOs that collapsed; SWTOR, Wildstar, City of Heroes, The Division and Battleborne. Of that lot, only SWTOR managed to salvage anything, though it came at a massive cost. Elder Scrolls Online also struggled substantially, but turned things around before reaching the financial implosion the aforementioned did. We all know the FFXIV 1.0 horror story. There are simply too many options and people, on average, are less willing to dedicate the necessary time investment to a single game. On the other hand, I do believe the genre will have a resurgence to some extent, though I suspect it will move away from the tab-target style altogether similar to how turned base combat has largely died out.

In some regard Diablo is an mmoish dungeon crawler, but really it depends on what you classify as a mmo. For me, social aspects, such as chat rooms/hubs and trading between players, are qualities I'd deem related to the mmo genre.

But really mmo is a pure subjective term at this point given how Destiny is coined an mmo despite not having chat systems or trading. But because it has raids people classify it as a mmo, which is odd because that would also put Borderlands in the same category.

Well, "Massively" "Multiplayer" "Online" are the words that make an MMO - and the last two are relatively trivial. The question is:"What is massive?" Many people simply relate it to the size of the world and how many people you can stack in one instance. If you relate it to the playerbase, just about every successful multiplayer online game becomes an MMO.

The RPG in MMORPG, "Role-playing-game" goes extra. You can have MMO-Shooters or MMO-Jump'n Runs or MMO-Hack'n Slays and something like Planetside might even qualify for the prior. And I like to think the Quicksand on Balmung ultimately is an attempt to create a MMO-Dating Sim >_> But that leads off topic.

Anywhoo, I wouldn't expect a new MMO from Square anytime soon and in fact, would assume the genre as such will fall a bit into obscurity. MOBAs are the new hot shizz and while I can see them getting competition from other, similarly accessible and low-committal game, I don't think MMORPG will have a big resurgence. Unless, of course, we make it so people will have to work less for their own and their families living, so they have more free time to commit to these games. And that can't work when the bottom 80% of a population owns like 7% of the total wealth and the top 10% keep having an income higher than the bottom 90% combined. That however is unlikely to change without some pretty radical political changes and as such, I doubt MMORPGs have a golden future.

City of Heroes/Villians was shutdown when it was doing fine due to NCSoft closing the studio working on it likely to shift the money involved to other things (including Wildstar which was supposed to be the new MMO hotness but had been in dev for 6 years at that time). You might be confusing it with Champions Online the other non-licensed superhero MMO that went free-to-play 14 months into its life.

Looking at FF11 which was their first and very successful MMORPG (up to 2010 at least, Abyssea and level cap increased destroyed the game imo.

Even if SE decides to make a new MMO, I won't be back. This is my 1st MMO and will be my last. This game is a lot of fun, but it's time consuming and costs too much to keep playing. I play because I'm hooked. It is fun and like the people I met on here. I wish I could bring my real life friends to play as well, but they all have their valid reasons not to. A couple of them is do to language. They play WOW, but they only speak Spanish and wouldn't be able to understand the story. My other friends don't play despite being FF fans, because they know MMOs are time consuming and don't want to get hooked. My brother doesn't play despite showing interest, but doesn't want to continually pay for a game he already purchased. I usually only play sports or fighting games. I only got to play this game, because of my nephew who wanted me to join him. I did and got hooked. He's been off and on, but I've been playing since I started nonstop. The only thing that will stop me from playing is depending on how they deal with inventory in 4.0. My hoarding is a huge issue and can't seem to help myself. If it isn't solved by then, then I quit and that in itself will be hard to do.

I will think about this question in like 10-15years o_o;

I blame all of that to them making this game like a Theme Park and playing WOW when it came to rebuilding FFXIV. It's a shame really this game could of been so much more.

Isn't it the other way round ? That the current generation of players don't want to stay for years on the same game, and thus MMO are made with short lifespan ?

I'm probably never going to quit XIV. I want to ride it out. :)

This MMO wasn't near the top of my list when it came out as 2.0, but my friends liked it for the nostalgia, so I followed. I would love to see SE make another option, equally deep, but with more of an action-combat style, and without the cutesy stuff like Lalafels and moogles. I would prefer someone else make a better option, because there seems to be a lot of FF content recycling between games.

I heard about a MMO from Kingdom Hearts, not sure if it's still legit but it was a project years ago

Next one we'll be using the Nerve Gear
