About the Warrior of Darkness.. theories? (spoiler-ish??)

I just got that far in to the MQ last night but

don't read if you're not interested..

Is it me or are all the members of that Party of Darkness (including the derplander) the characters that were in the intro to 1.0? As well as the warriors who were assumed to be saved by Louisoix in the intro to 2.0 ARR? In that intro it was shown that they were teleported into the present day. Yet they are shown to be fighting an unknown Ascian in the echo instead. Am I the only one who's thinking they were the former hero's of light from 5 years ago. I think some folks have said we were the hero returned from 5 years ago (in some form) but that didn't make sense in the intro. Did <player> just rise to take their place and will eventually be like them if we ever fail? Any theories?

What was the point of killing Ravana again if Ascians wanted the primals to be summoned?

I'm going to keep any theories about the Warriors to myself until future patches, but as to your last question:

As I mentioned in the other thread, Unukalhai says specifically that RavEx and BisEx were likely not summoned by Ascians. The Warriors killing Ravana's incarnation definitely confirms this and that Elidibus does not want the Warring Triad released via the Primals. If their summoning was provoked by Ascians, it was not Elidibus.

There are a lot of interpretations beyond this. Mine is that Lahabrea and his group were basically rogue agents. They worked for the same overall goal, but using very different methods, which Elidibus states flat out in 2.1 to you and again to Nabriales. It's also the reason Elidibus gave Urianger the white auracite: they overstepped their boundaries. While Rav and BisEx were clearly post-mortem of Lahabrea, the 12th group was still working to finish Lahabrea's goals even with him defeated, as seen by the SMN questline.

I think the mistake a lot of people make with the Ascians is assuming they are all a hivemind, when it was one of the first points of introducing Elidibus to show that they don't all agree with each other. That was the purpose of the scene with Nabriales and Elidibus at the end of 2.1.

Short version:
3.1 Ravana, and any future Bismarck summoning, was not supported by Elidibus, but may have been done by the Ascian Watery Triad (Lahabrea's group). They aren't completely gone, we still have Pashtarot to deal with.
Alternatively, the summoning of BisEx and RavEx (and 3.1 Ravana) may have been instigated by another force entirely, after all, the method you use to encounter them is very, very odd and Unukalhai is vague about it.
The original ones in 3.0 may have been supported by Elidibus, or may have not. It's impossible to say.

One thing to note with regard to the heroes having returned after 5 years, and how that didn't make sense with the introduction that you saw - for you and me, and others who started with 2.0, we are not among that group that was sent forward in time. We are often compared to them, and eventually are given the same title due to our actions in ARR, but they are a different group.

For those who played FFXIV during its 1.0 incarnation and finished the required story quests, they were the Warriors of Light that fought 5 years prior and had returned - not just in some form, but actually returned. The 5 Warriors of Darkness that you encounter were likewise at that same battle, but something happened after they were sent through time that set them down a different path than the one the 1.0 legacy players take (which is the 2.0 story...1.0 players and those of that started with 2.0 have the same story as of 2.0, but with minor dialog differences here and there for 1.0 players that reflects how their character was actually there and knew all of these people who don't remember them until later).

I think the Warrior of Darkness are not working for Ascians in general, but for Elidiibus. It could be Elidibus has a different agenda then his brothers and sisters. I too think they are the 1.0 heroes, why else make them look alike?

The Warrior of Darkness are adventures that for some reason decided to turn away from Hydelyn. We know from the Echo vision that at one point they were fighting against an Ascian. Maybe Hydelyns blessing failed them and they found a new blessing in Ziodark. Maybe Hydelyn is the big bad and we are fighting as the champion of the real baddie? So many questions.

I'm reluctant to follow the thinking that because they look like the characters from the trailer they ARE those characters. We know that Derplander and co have always been used as a proxy of sorts for our own characters in game media. I'm leaning more toward the Warriors of Darkness being entirely unrelated to the characters we've seen previously; their appearances merely being dark reflections of them. I wouldn't be surprised if the original intent was for the WoDs to actually imitate the player character's appearance but this would cause all kinds of complications with voice acting and such so they likely decided to use our favourite proxies again and turn them into real characters.

I'm banking on them being Primals of the original Warriors of Light. They're two-dimensional enough to work that way. Maybe the Ascians usurped them and corrupted them something. I could see Ascians corrupting primals.

Well, I beginning to think derplander and friends are from an alternate reality, a world which saw its last ascians destroyed.

Thing is there are things that don't connect...yet.

In the vision, derplander was about to destroy the last of the acsians on his world. Something must have happened to make him take up the opposing view to hydelyn's work and help Elidibus, and I think the outright removal of the acsians as a force might have something to do with it.

I guess the question i would want to ask out of all this is: is Zodiark's existence also waning/threatened at the moment? Perhaps it is not a case of the darkness getting stronger so much as both sides running out of power, seemingly stronger to the other out of desperation....



...or Zodiark could be Hydelyn, but that's a baseless guess at the moment. :)

That quote from Koji has always been very problematic though. He's speaking in the sense that Derplander is a real character in the same way that everyone else's WoLs are real characters even when perceived by another player; they're just not THE WoL in your version of the story. The easiest way to think of his statement is that Derplander is Koji's character. He exists in the world, but if he's not being played by you personally then he just another adventurer.

We saw Derplander go to Ishgard with Tataru and Alphinaud and become a dragoon in the trailers. If the WoD was the same Derplander then Alphinaud would have recognised him when we met them would he not? Of course as soon as we take control of our characters none of the stuff in those trailers ever actually happened to Derplander; it happened to OUR characters instead. This is why Koji's statement about Derplander being a real character can't be taken as literally as people would like: it's simply impossible for him to be real in that sense as soon as we players interact with the game as we replace Derplander in the story.

We can still take it literally - when Koji talks about him being a proxy, he's talking about the times we see him in scenes and doing things that our own characters do in-game. When he's talking about him as a real and separate character, he's talking about the one we see in the CGI cinematic trailers. Even with the Heavensward trailer, what the Derplander (and crew, for the 1.0 and End of an Era) is involved in doesn't quite match up with what we do - he's fleeing alone at a different time from when we split off, he heads into Ishgard alone, etc.

Basically some of the representations of Derplander are proxy, some are him as a character - it's not fully one or the other, and now we've actually met the character version (from what we know at present).

This is sort of verging on a parallel universe theory though. It's possible, I admit. I just personally think Derplander is more of a vague concept of a character than a fleshed out character involved in the story. I suppose we'll find out when we get more of his group's backstory.

I can buy that they might be the CG WoL since it was said WoL appear in the cusp of an Umbral Era. If that's the case were does the legacy WoL come into the equation?

I am of the opinion that these are the same WoLs from 1.0 that were mentioned early in 2.0 but were forgotten by everyone (except the legacy woL) why they remained forgotten, who knows? Ascian magic perhaps or they just choose not to involve themselves with people anymore and focus on Primals.

Im almost certain they aren't primals. Y'shtola literally sees with the Aether now and has a heightened sensitivity to it. If they were primals she would have noticed in a second.

Plus at least the WAR seemed to have the Echo which doesn't seem to match what we know of primals.

If the WoD has chosen a different path, but is still good, why would he attack us straightaway? It doesn't really striking me as a friendly behaviour. I mean, if we're doing something wrong than wouldn't it be more reasonable to talk to us first before swinging an axe trying to kill us?

On a sidenote, i just realized that for some people who created an exact copy of a derplander from the CGIs it was a doppelganger like I thought it would be for everyone xD

I agree with this, too. Near the end of A realm reborn and even early in Heavensward people resented us for being so willing to follow the Scions without question. To interfere with people lives and how we're really just an unthinking puppet. The DRK quest line pretty much highlights this though as well, our character does resent being used and helping all these people sometimes.

Afterall, there have been other Echo users that have joined the Asciens. It's been repeated alot of time that Hydaelyn isn't as what she seems and Minifilia's group of echo users in 1.0 all discovered something terrible about the echo (but they won't let us know, lol). Lastly, even Elidibus said that if we knew the truth that if we and Minfillia will join the Asciens.

But unless Jerklander has always been that way, I can't understand his unpleasant personality change. That and I don't think they were planning on killing us (probably just the scions), just testing out the WoL's strength

Maybe we are a puppet for Hydaelyn and Jerklander et al found out and we can imagine their bitterness.

Personally, I think they're gonna pull and XI-Wing-of-the-Goddess mixed with some III and...

...have it where there are two worlds/time-lines that are fighting to defend there existence, each with their own crystal and Ascian organization infiltrating the other world. The Ascian the Warriors of Darkness were fighting was on our side , while the Ascians we fight are on theirs. I theorize that our Ascians maybe named/are the Twelve +1 more (like Eldibus), like how the Ascians we face are named after XII's Scions of Light.

Since they (the Warriors of Darkness) are close replicas of the cyphers used for advertising purposes (and these characters have been used from the very end of 1.0), my take is that they originate from a reality where Zodiark is in the ascendancy over Hydaelyn. They went through all the same trials as the player character in 1.0 against the Garleans and taking part in the battle of Cartenau, but their world has always been a polar opposite in terms of light/dark balance. If Elidibus is truly concerned that light and dark need to be put into some kind of parity, then that reality where Zodiark is dominant would need to be taken down a peg or two as well. Of course, this relies on the two realities conflicting with each other in some way, and would probably need us to go there to take some points back for alt-Hydaelyn.

One possible motive is that Elidibus is not actually that concerned with it, however. In this scenario, he's dressing his own agenda up in terms that seam reasonable (at least to someone like Urianger who keeps an open mind) in order to hide his true intentions as long as possible, which would be darkness everywhere. He keeps a lot of pieces in play, and the Warriors of Darkness are just the latest.

The other is that he genuinely is concerned for balancing the two worlds, and the story will play out with Urianger falling into hot water with the rest of the Scions once Alisae reveals his supposed "treachery".

Honestly, that was similar to one of my musings as well, with alternate versions of characters we know playing an opposite role, like Minfillia still leading the Scions and normal in our perception, but being Lilith-styled and antagonistic in the perception of the WoDs. And by musing I mean forlorn hope that is totally not happening, ever, but I want it to in one of those not-serious-theory type ways, if that makes sense.

If Minfillia is Lillith, then what about your player character in our theoretical WotG equivalent?

That Ascian was intentionally unnamed despite most other major Ascians you've encountered - and not encountered, like Pashtarot and Emmeroloth - being named in cutscenes.

But yeah, I don't expect it to happen, just a sort of playful guess. It would be odd to use the same plot twist. Right? Right?

But then where do Legacy players stand? Everyone remembers them as the Warrior of Light from 1.0's scenario at the end of A Realm Reborn's main story.

I have some theories involving the Warriors of Darkness and the Ascians, but one of them involves alternate dimensions of Eorzea and I hope to god I'm wrong because stuff like that gets confusing as all hell if done even slightly incorrectly.

The Echo scene suggests they've already killed an Ascian, which, fair enough, we can do it so there's no reason they can't. However, the Ascian asks them whether or not they believe killing him will save their world. He doesn't specifically name-drop Hydaelyn, so a parallel world hypothesis is still in play, but in the interest if not going completely bonkers with that, let's just not go there.

If that's the case... adding in the fact that the Scions note we should know about them if they've been around trouncing Primals as we have... I would posit that they are ex-Warriors of Light from the future who failed to save their world and have been pulled back in time by Elidibus / Zodiark to do save our world or timeline. We just got on the scene and learned about Ravana's re-summoning, yet they were already on top of him. It seems... just a little bit too convenient, if you ask me. Darklander also emphasizes a particular word in one of his lines to us:

My problem with this is from where this comes. Seriously, I trust the Ascians not even as far as I can throw them. They are responsible for the calamities. They are responsible for the primals. All of this killed people. A lot of people. And I just can't believe the world can be saved through killing innocents. So, considering who the WoD is employed by, and the mean look on that group in general (I'm still not over that psychotic smirk of Roe!PLD...), somehow makes me doubt they are good people just trying to safe the world. If that was really the case, why not just, you know, talk to us about it instead of attacking us practically on sight? If we knew what's going on, and that they are trying to help, don't you think we would have joined forces with them?

I will be frank. I don't completely trust Hydaelyn anymore, either. Something in 3.0 just... felt wrong about her. I can't explain it, it's just a feeling. Could be wrong, too, I don't know.

I think the WoD have bought into the Ascian's way of things. The Ascians have always hinted that they are seemingly setting the world back on its true path and that Hydaelyn is the evil. However nothing we have seen really supports that and that is at least the start of my doubts. Also, if they have such an unassailable argument for why what they are doing is saving the world why not try and get us to fall in line by telling us?

Having said that, I don't think they will turn out to be completely wrong. I do think something happened long ago which threw everything out of balance and wack. I however suspect that their way isn't going to in the end be the only way. Its worth remembering back to Ramuh who seemed concerned that the world would be swallowed in darkness. Its why he tested us, to see if we were up to facing it.

While I agree that this is possible with what little we know atm, I sincerely hope this is not the case. The current XI event reminded me of the truly ridiculous number of doomed alternate Vana'diels that tried to crash the PC's Vana'diel's party. I really hope that they are not reusing the alt worlds plotline or time travel again.

Although the fact that the WoD!White Mage seems to be wearing gear specific to A-Trowa Cant's tradition of white magic as well as you know, being a Lalafell whm in the first place is not leaving me very hopeful.

but that seems far more ridiculous, and you've had your fill of the empire anyway, so I'll try to ask this: What do you think happened in the future that caused the WoD and his party of darkness to go back in time to help beings of darkness, and why didn't they interfere with our foray into darkness to stop the crystal tower of darkness and go into the world of darkness to stop the cloud of darkness?

I agree with this. I don't think Hydaleyn is evil, but I think she knows a lot more than what she's telling us. She has a lot of explaining to do in the days to come, and I think we will have our answers when we get closer to the inevitable resurrection of Zodiark.

But enough about that, on to the Warriors of Darkness/Derpness:

Warriors of Darkness in other Final Fantasy titles they've appeared in have never been evil, but only serve the darkness as much as the Warriors of Light serve the light: Balance. It almost seems to me like that is why they think they were summoned in the first place: We've grown exceedingly strong since the Ultima Weapon, even without the Mothercrystal's protection. We've earned a penchant for achieving what should be impossible in Y'shtola's eyes.

I think they are being manipulated by Elidibus as a means to an end, they think that fighting us will restore balance, but is just giving the Ascian's god more power that will likely lead to his return. It probably didn't take much convincing for them to think: "Yeah, this guy is strong... too strong. We better take care of him/her." At the end of all this, I'm pretty sure the Warriors of Darkness will realize the errors of their ways and help us take down Zodiark.

While we have little reason to trust an Ascian, what with the whole "possessing our buddy and trying to nuke us" bit, it's noted by Elidibus that Lahabrea, Nabriales, and Igeyorhm were all acting as rogue agents when we encountered them. While they may be responsible for the Calamities and untold loss of life, we still don't know why they're doing such things. If it comes down to it, we may be forced to sacrifice our closest friends to give Hydaelyn (the world) a tomorrow, and while that is not a fun or enjoyable task, if that's what it takes...

As for Hydaelyn, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I agree, there's not enough information to make a definitive case for anything. Just throwing out the best thing I can cobble out of the information we now have.

In the Echo flashback to the Warriors of Darkness' past, they're all wearing basic AF1 and wielding base Relic Weapons (I think). In the present time, they're wearing black-dyed AF1 and wield Atma Relic Weapons.

Prior to the first "fight" against him, Lahabrea states that Hydaelyn's continued activities will break down the physical and aetheric laws of the world. I can only surmise that, in this hypothetical scenario, she actually did so, which would pretty much tear apart reality.

The Crystal Tower is side content, so it's highly unlikely to be referenced in the Main Scenario. They didn't oppose us because at that point in time we weren't a threat to the Ascians' plans, and besides, we don't know if they are directly linked to the Void and Voidsent.

Of course, adding in time travel makes you question why the Ascians don't just go to us on the opening carriage and annihilate us before we ever pose any sort of threat, but well... time travel is wonky.

I see, well I can imagine the world where the Warriors of Darkness came from as something akin to everyone and everything in Erorzea being petrified as crystal. And possibly fueling a Primal version of Hydealyn as well.

As for the Tower, I asked mostly as a joke (see the "of darkness" plastered around that part) but also because, side content or no, I think the tower would had played a part in over-saturating the realm with light in their world, leading to the "Hydealyn breaking down reality" scenario playing out.

I think the Ascians we know were previously Warriors/Scions of Light just like we, the playing characters, are now.

Maybe having the Echo and/or Hydalyn's blessing somehow "drains" the light of those who use it, and eventually they (we) become beings of pure darkness, like the Ascians we have fought.

The only way to become a "normal" being again would be having the Anti-Echo/Blessing of Darkness, perhaps from Zodiark, so that it "drains" the darkness of them/us...

I believe that's pretty much what happened to Derplander and his buddies. They are on the way of becoming pure darkness Ascians, but to avoid that, they purposefully spend their "Blessing of Darkness" to kill primals so the darkness inside them can be "drained".

Even better is that at the end of 3.1, there's a book with the name Gerun. Gerun was the leader of the Occuria in FFXII, and the Espers (that is, the actual summons, not the Scions of Light) were all but directly stated to have served under the Occuria but had rebelled against them. Whether its a mere reference or perhaps an actual person in the setting remains to be seen. I know FFXIV takes a lot of inspiration from Final Fantasy XII/Tactics, but that was very interesting for me to see referenced.

Isn't our opening cutscene Warrior a Dragoon now? It makes me think the Warrior of Darkness is a different copy, either a created clone or from an alternate timeline, and that our "good" War is still out and about.

I think there is a discrepancy between the two versions. Right now there are 5 individuals:

• Highlander Hyur: Male, initially Warrior, but switched to Dragoon
• Plainsfolk Lalafell: Female, White Mage, generally adorable
• Sea Wolf Roegadyn: Male, Paladin, and his counterpart's psycho expression forever set the Warriors of Darkness' morality in doubt
• Wildwood Elezin: Unknown gender, assumed to be female (Note that the is also a Male Elezen in 1.0's advertising before Awnswers). Black Mage
• Seeker of the Sun(?) Miquo'te: Female, Bard, notably the only one who is with the Highlander before Answers

However there are two different versions of these 5 adventurers. The Warriors of Darkness, and characters used to symbolize us, the players. Of the 5 in the latter category, only the Highlander is seen everywhere form the start, with the Miquo'te appearing with from the beginning to Answers, and the Lala, Roe and Elezen only appearing there. As our proxies whether they're canon or not is ambiguous.


Their counterparts, the Warriors of Darkness, however are canon, the issue being who these doppelgangers are relative to the proxies, they could be one and the same (or 5 and the same, rather) but that is hard to reconcile with the Proxy highlander being a Dragoon as well as their black clothing and weapons. This is why the alternate universe and time travel theories are circulating in this thread, because we know nothing about this group and we have no indication on if the proxy group is canon other than as the ebon-clad Warriors of Darkness


tl;dr for all we know the versions of the Highlander representing us doesn't exist in canon, or at least instead of becoming a Dragoon, he became a Warrior of Darkness

Even if the Ascian's role in FFXIV is closely based on their names from FFXII I don't think we can take the light/dark labels at face value. The gods of FFXII, the Occuria, were as a whole quite evil and are also shown to control the flow of history. So when the Scions rebelled, naturally the ones who stood against the gods are labeled as "dark" by history, while the scions who stood with the gods labeled as "light". Of course the Occuria would think anyone who sided with them were on the correct side, but that doesn't mean the light scions were moral or upright, it just means the Occuria (who again, are evil) liked them.

An example of this sort of thing would be Thordan in FFXIV. He viewed himself as moral and upright, but he was far from it. If he had won the day, history would have remembered us as evil and him as good, but that wouldn't make it the truth.

Would be interesting if the 12 are 14's version of the Scions of light

Honestly I was disappointed when 'warrior of darkness' ended up being someone with nothing to do with the 'current' story. IMO the big reveal should have been a shade/dark version of our own character. Which would even fit with the current patch name. "As goes light, so goes darkness"

That tends to happen when your affiliated with the Ascians, who are usualy more intertwined with the metaplot then the patch stories (to the point where they are more apparent in initial MSQ arcs for both cycles, and the A Realm Awoken and Beofre the Fall patches). Only appearing for vague foreshadowing and cameos, the actual foreground threats after the initial MSQ arc were

• [2.1] Moogles
• [2.2] Sahagin
• [2.3] Sylphs
• [2.4] A Cult
• [2.5] Ascians, then the Syndicate

only 1 out of 5 patches and the starting MSQ ever had the Ascians do something besides manipulate things in the background or foreshadow something (ARR: Ultima, BTF: Kidnapping Minfillia, HW: Confronting the WoL in Azys Lla)...come to think of it AGLSGD is similar to ARW in that it introduces a group of antagonists related to the Ascians, but somehow different fro them (Makes sense given that both cases turned out to be related)


lets hope 3.15 brings new MSQ to the table. But fr now I assume the Warriors of Darkness are a part of 3.1+'s metaplot, similar to finding a way to kill Ascians was 2.1-5's metaplot

At the end of the DRK 30-50 line.

Admittedly, I don't quite get the meaning behind the patch name yet either, beyond the fact that the Warriors of Darkness are also fighting primals. But even so.
