Welcome to the Light-Post

As the title implies this should hopefully be an illuminating post, one that I hope will shed some light on an issue that has been kept in the dark. I appreciate the brilliance of the enlightened staff at SE and I know they are working at light speed to try and fix issues that do take priority, but enough banter and on to the (light) source of my post.

I really enjoy playing this game but I am unable to do so during certain times of day where the room is too bright. Reason being, When its night fall or I'm in a dungeon, I find it terribly difficult to see anything. Sure it's possible to make out a few things but in general I have to wait till after dark to enjoy the beautiful textures and artwork the staff have invested so much time and energy into. I don't think I'm the only one who has noticed how dark things get.

I have yet to find a gamma correction/brightness/contrast adjuster for the game (in game and out of game in the config file) and since I play the game on my wide screen HD TV I don't want to have to turn the brightness up and down all the time just so I can play the game.

I have a few suggestions and would appreciate feedback from the community and Dev's as to what they think of the brightness level as it is and whether or not you feel a change needs to be implemented or not.

Recommendation: Look into adding contrast/brightness/gamma sliders to the configuration menu in the game it's self allowing players to find their "happy place"

Suggestion: I do enjoy the feel of the game as is and would hate to take away from the ambiance of having it get realistically dark at night or in an underground cavern. In order to keep with the beauty of the game would it be possible to implement a portable light source (lamps, torches, flashlights) that can be sold right next to the arrows, and/or how about a simple light spell available to Conjurers or Thaumaturge's that would create an illuminating ball of light above the targets head that, depending on the level of the spell (light 1, light 2, light 3, etc) will illuminate a different radius or different way. Possible "headlights" for your choco, a wide beam light that looks just like the field of vision on your mini-map.

The recommendation would most likely be the easier of the two to implement but i feel adding in a light source would be the best one to look into for the long haul. I know SE has lots on their plate at the moment so I don't expect anything on this anytime soon, just wanting to put a bug in their ear.

I completely agree. I have an older monitor and a well lit room. I can use my computer just fine for everything but FFXIV during the day. I turned the brightness on my monitor all the way up, but when I'm in a dark area, I can't see a thing on my screen and end up running into walls.

Oh thank goodness, i was starting to think i was the only one with this problem. its not a huge issue but i do prefer to play with the names turned off for that more authentic feel.

as a side note it would be nice to be able to display the icons and hp bars and such over peoples heads without having to have names turned on. for some reason i find the names just really clutter up my screen.

I had the exact same reaction. I thought that maybe it was something with my monitor. :)

I ended up raising the brightness on my screen, which compensates somewhat. But I got to the point where I hated running leves at (in-game) night, especially in Nophica's Wells, because I couldn't see to run where the paths in those mesas were and kept running into walls.

Bump! i hope the devs at least look at this post, even if they dont comment i feel it is a huge limitation for me being able to actually play when i have the free time to. not all of us are lucky enough to play at night or in a very dark room.

i know this is trivial compared to other issues right now but i really would like some feedback on this. if feedback has been given elsewhere can someone point me towards it?

a slider would be so useful for brightness. i hope the dev's see this post and react with lightspeed

bumping up this post till i have some recognition that this will be addressed at some point. again, i know it is not going to be high on SE's list of priorities but they do need to know that this fairly standard feature has been neglected.

I'm glad I placed my computer where it is, no problem even during the day.
However, I believe a brightness/contrast/gamma options would be the way to go for you guys.
The little portable lamps will still put you at a disadvantage compared to other players (you still won't see far away). And, since the issue is not with the game itself but something technical, a technical solution fits better I think. :)

It would be awesome if they could do both. i think thats a big thing these mmo's are lacking, pointless but fun and immersing skills and abilities. i played a F2P mmo called mabanogi (i think) that had a bunch of these types of things. you could compose your own music with different instruments, needed a light source to see in the dark. i know it wouldnt help much for seeing far away but that's realistic and that was what i was going for.

Well, the graphics are going to change slightly with the new engine. So things like lighting and shadows are going to be different.

kewl, cant wait dto see some ore of the finer details. in the grand scheme of things i know this is even lower on the priorities than the kick function for the LS system. i'm content to wait as long as i know they are aware of this.

Just wanted to bump this post.

I had taken a hiatus when they introduced the fees because at that time i didnt feel there was anything worth paying for. I still had crysta that i could not refund and wanted to use it sparingly when big patches (like 1.21) come out. First i want to say i'm really happy with the way things are going right now. I am really enjoying myself and i actually want to play the game now, but there is still the same issues i had in the OP that are restricting my play. unless i can find a windowless dark hole to put my computer into i have a huge difficulty trying to play during daylight hours. It's only a really big issue when i am in dark areas of the game which is quite a lot. Please add in a brightness/contrast slider or give the CON a light spell that floats an orb over their head to light the surrounding area? I would really like a DEV to take note of this and comment, even if it is just to tell me "too bad, so sad."

I'm pretty sure they are aware of this. I remember also reading that they would be adding more graphic options at a later date (I'm assuming when 2.0 is released with the new graphics client/engine). All I can say is just be patient.

Patience... ya ya how long till i learn patience? lol. Thanks for the reassurance, i guess i will have to save the rest of my crysta for 2.0 then. I really like what they have done so far and i have always seen great potential for this game. I'm glad its not just me who noticed the lack of visibility at night. i still think a light spell would be the best way to go, or just install some halogen headlights in my chocobo.
