Gauss Barrel Graphics is Ugly

Loving the MCH. No problem with the mechanics of casting that comes with GB (more challenge is better imo). But the graphics of the Gauss Barrel is ugly. It ruins the look of the cool guns. They lose their individual aesthetics and all end up looking too futuristic and too front heavy. Some end up looking more like a mace than a gun. Some just look ridiculous with the barrel floating way out with no attachment.

The casting animation where he waves the gun around than holds it straight up is kind of awkward too.

I don't mind it, nore do I mind the "waving", considering dealing with blm's ice casting animation looks even worse imo. For me it's a fun little touch, I like how it spins around. The only thing I'd think it would be off putting for is the ferdinand cause that's a dual barrel gun, I haven't gotten there yet but in my head it conflicts when I think about it.

Not only is Ferdinand double barrel, it also has a sawed off aesthetic. Gb literally hangs in mid air in front of it. It's stupid and tacky and I totally agree with op.

Agree. There are so many nice looking guns in the game, but they kind of get ruined with the gauss barrel been put on. Some of them look alright, some of them look flat out bad with gauss on.

I love it on the Dreadwyrm Handgonne, makes a massive heffer of a weapon look even more over the top :D
But yeah I agree...on most guns it just looks a bit silly.
I don't mind the cast animation on its own, it's just when you're doing right after another skill (which is natural) it makes it look even more wavy and weird because your hands are desperately shifting around from the previous animation.
The main thing that bothers me isn't the barrel, but the running animation with weapon drawn...looks really silly when you'd imagine they'd hold it close to them with both hands.

Yes, I totally agree about this too. He looks like he is vacuuming the ground while running with it.

Emperor's New Gauss Barrel (Can I have it?)

If they're going to keep the current look of it, they should take the time to resize and adjust the positioning of the GB part for each gun model. It looks ridiculous on a lot of guns.

They scrapped mutliple attachments on the basis that they didn't want to design it for every gun...so they went with gauss barrel on every single gun regardless of whether it matched or not. Aesthetics aside, I felt they missed a really good opportunity to flesh out MCH's tool kit instead of copying GB over as WM.

There are so many things I could complain about MCH animations and aesthetics (specially as a FPS gamer)... but for now I will just agree with the OP.

If the machinist is a physical class, why does the gauss attachment magically hang in the air just beyond the gun barrel(s) with no visible means of support? I suppose it might depend on non-magical electromagnetic or plasma fields of some sort, but if we have that sort of tech, why are we shooting bullets and not bolts of degenerate neutron matter or particle beams? "Aether" is not an answer because that's the catch-all medium of magic and magical damage in this game.

It's a conundrum wrapped in a paradox, just like the class.

I don't mind it, but it would be cool if every weapon had its own version of the gauss barrel.

We use a mixture of technology and aether to summon turrets and the gauss barrel. Lore wise it can make sense. Still ugly though.

Thats the reason why they scrapped the idea of different attachments in the first place, it was too much developmental work to make a different barrel design for each gun (let alone having different lunch boxes for each gun...even though bards can get away with unique quiver and arrows). That being said though, I'm fine with all teh guns having the same model of barrel if they had expanded the idea of attachments instead of giving us only GB (and making WM a direct copy of it). Could've had a barrel that turned weapon skills into AoE, instead of giving us copies of quick notch and wide volley.

yea, it's ugly.

i don't mind that they don't want to waste the graphical resources to make it unique for every gun but it should be minimally intrusive if that's the case and right now it's big an obnoxious when it doesn't look right.

You should pay attention to the class quest dialogue. Machinists actually use Aether as the firing mechanism on the weapon. It\\\\\\\\'s the spark that ignites the powder to send the projectiles forward. That\\\\\\\\'s why they wear those boxes on their hips, it allows for tapping in to your aether without magical training. All machinist gadgets and gizmos are fueled by your own Aether. MAGItek.

I just imagined it as Allagan high tech. It sits just beyond the chamber and all bullets are accelerated through it like some kind of 'hyper gate'. With this rationalization in hand, I feel ok about! Sort of!

I actually really like the Gauss Barrel model, if you've played those old school japanese shmups like R-Type, it looks like the attachment you got to your ship when you grab a power-up.

Sometimes I actually wonder if it's a bit of a reference, they even rotate the same way.

The problem is that it turns you into a badass because you start shooting lasers which crawl along the floor, ricochet off walls, and is utterly indestructible and kills enemies on contact. Ours makes us wave our guns like a wand (which doesn't even animate fully if you're spamming split shot) and give us access to two abilties, while disabling auto attack; it really just...adds no flare other than to look like an eyesore for most guns.

I love Magitek but to be fair tapping into your own aether without magical training isn't the way Magitek worked in FFVI and it is also not the way it works in FFXIV.

-I don't think it's been established we're using magitek (at least, not the same as the Garleans who have no affinity for aether) as opposed to some other nonsensical name like the aetherconvertor or transmitter, that allows you to use aether for your machinery.

I'm aware it isn't FFVI, but people think of FFVI when they think of Magitek because that is where it was coined. You are correct that we are not using Magitek as defined in FFXIV's terms either. In FFXIV Magitek is similar to FFVI in that it is the taking of an outside source of aether or magic and containing it in a vessel to transmit or use as a power source. In FFXIV the aether source is Ceruleum, which is a substance created by draining aether from the Crystals. The Garlean Empire uses it to power their devices. I would like Machinist to be working through Magitek as well but unfortunately not... YET.

It's horrible and I hate it :( wish I could turn the gauss barrel effect off. I have the hive weapon and it just floats on the end, getting my eso one soon and thats even shorter so its going to look worse. Its like they didn't even try to make it work.

I thought it would of been a better idea for your side tool to light up, giving your gun more aether energy but in exchange you have to charge it than shoot in the lore.

Hell if I know how aetherite technology works! (I'm a MCH saying this o_o)

Something like this would've worked really well if they made MCH use magnetic/electric charge stacks, sorta like warrior's wrath/abandon. Clean shots in GB with proc would give you a charge, and 1 charge is used for gauss round, more for abilties like ricochet and something else. All of which would cause your lunchbox to sparkle with power or something. At least make it more visually entertaining (considering that's what it does briefly for gauss round anyway)

I glam the Bluesteel for my PvP set (GunBlade Rawr!!!) and I loathe that GB is part of my burst; the GB looks ridiculously suspended in front of it XD

I Love my MCH class but I agree the gause barrel does look weird in alot of spots would have been cool if they had done it another way BUUUUTTTT im also so sad about the move gauss round and Wildfire like they are two really cool abilitys but they have no flash to them like wildfire is this insane gigantic number that flys on your screen with like no visual effect :(

Perhaps you should pay more attention to the forum posts you comment on. My point was, despite the in-game explanation, it makes no sense. Why depend on "real world physics" with "magitek" occasionally thrown in as a stopgap, cover-all, or a device to limit job capabilities? There are elegant connections made in other classes, but the machinist dynamic is rather clumsily constructed and justified. Gauss barrel is the most obvious example in that it is central to combat.

Can we get an /attachement thing like /visor so we can disable the gauss appearance?


Wildfire's animation is pretty lame...it mentions burning pitch, but it's more like a timebomb. Still, the explosion is rather weak. Couldn't we get a more dramatic blast?
