Melee DPS to the rescue

I'm curious to see if anyone has the same knee jerk reaction I do, and to see what others do when it happens.

You're in a party and in a decent scrap, when a monster jumps out and goes off to mangle one of the casters. The Tank doesn't notice or is in a tough spot so you break away to try to either drop the threat or get it off of the caster. Anyone have any thoughts on getting the hate to break off and attach to you? I know it would be in very rare situations, but sometimes I wish there was something you could do to generate hate and help get targets back in line.

Man I made a career out of that on a CASTER job, BLM. Our defense sucks huge balls. We gotta look out for each other lol.

Save your stuns. Over lap them to prevent target from moving. Do burst damage rotation if your job is able to do burst damage.

While on DPS - all the time, for casters o_o I'm especially protective of healers. >.> Thats when I spam my AoEs/CDs/stuns with extreme prejudice. x.x
Just last night - DFed into Fractal on MNK. We got to the part where you teleport to the ring area around the boss platform (with the jumps). We paused for the other DPS to catch up (who must have temp AFKed o.o).... healer ran too far ahead to look at the very first mob in the area and wait - and accidently pulled that first portion of the three-part mob. I had a feeling it would happen - just that odd sense of knowing the pull boundaries...x.x Ran passed and slapped elixir field into the incoming mob to grab them before they could get to her. (AoD probably would have had a larger range, and no CD, but... >.> /shrug Went straight to Elixir out of reaction/habit. OTL)

Nobody touches mah healers and gets away with it. :| Not even if they're DFed.

Mh... I am not sure but is Flash and Provoke not for all classes? Cannot login and check right now. But the last time I checked it was available on my other classes too... maybe I am also just checked it pre lv 30.

You Loose Flash after you change from Pugilist to Monk.

Im just glad my death count for pulling stunts isn't as high...

When I play on my DRG I always white knight the healers if they get aggro. Thankfully the majority notice and will heal me... but some don't. On this BLM I have rescued a lot of people just by using Blizz2 and freezing the sicker so their target can get away.

Ninja probably could. I haven't tested it too much with mine but smoke screening the caster in question would likely at least send it to the next person down the list. Which if they are actively attacking would probably be them or the tank. Not sure too many other classes have an equivalent though.

As WHM if something comes for my caster brethren I usually try to fluid aura them back into the tank or sleep them if its possible and a rescue isn't coming anytime soon. We magic types gotta stick together. Though to any dps who come to my aide when something is gnawing on me, just know you become my favorite DF child for the rest of the run. Who gets healed first after the tank is not always a coincidence. XD

Me too! On the flip side, when I'm on my monk I always keep a weather eye on the healer. Always glad to pop my survival cooldowns and kite a loose mob back to the tank for my healer. :)

Often if you save healer in this manner you end up as their favouritest healing target, even over tank in some cases. (I've had tanks who were just glorified dps'es and them melee dps was doing the actual tanking.)

Also yeah, that's what I do too - melees are sturdier, DRGs even more, so I try to help if I see the tank is not doing his job because of whatever reason. Oh, if only parry still scaled off strength...those 30% reduction Keen Flurry saved my ass so many times. I tanked Cerberus for an entire fight.

The only way I have to keep aggro, as a DRG, is to do lots of burst damage and stuns if the enemy is not resistant - and that's what I usually try to do. If I can't take aggro back from them even though I'm using everything, it's usually because they are spamming AOE cures. Which basically means they are digging their own graves.

I've saved so many instances as drg. Tanked raids unintentionally, normal dungeons.

The burden of competence...

When I see a mob get peeled off the tank, I usually try to stun it and hope the tank picks it back up. If they don't, I burst it down.

All the time I see a mob stray especially if it's after the BLM I will spine shatter or at least attempt to stun and burst on it to either kill it fast enough or at least take the hate stay alive caster senpai D8

As melee dps,I'll save healer if they got aggro but i won't help ranged dps though.

Why Blame The Tank For Not Noticing Something?

Here's An Idea! Attack It Until It You Get Hate And Then Run Around The Tank.

It's a really nice gesture to go help the squishy party members, but imo it's the healer/caster standing far back that should move to the tank when they gain aggro. Everyone has the tools (movement keys) to help the tank take off the mob and that's why I don't usually jump to the rescue when I see someone get hate. When I'm the one with accidental aggro I run to tank and mark the target with a square if needed. Very simple.

The worst kind are the players who pull hate and then start running away from anyone who tries to grab the enemy off them. Like what are they thinking, that the mob is just going to get bored if they run in circles long enough? Anyone running around like a twat can keep their enemy, lol. Even if I'm tanking.

Thanks everyone so far for the fantastic thoughts, I love the simple solutions that some have offered, which honestly in battle I hadn't thought about. I have all the respect and love in the world for all of those adventurers out that there keep us on our feet and deliver the long range artillery!

While optimally the healer, if getting aggro does the running to the tank, a running healer is not healing. Nor is one whose heal casts get interrupted by hits. While this shouldn't cause troubles majority of the times, then there are those times it does. Say, if healer rips aggro because they actually need to chain heal, the need to chain heal has not necessarily passed when melee senpai picks up the add from them. While party can survive a lack of top dps for a while, it doesn't necessarily survive a lack of heals for a while. And then there are those tanks who don't pick up stuff even if it is ran to them. What I'm saying is, yeah, it's good for the one who ripped a mob to run it back to the tank. But dps coming to rescue is still much appreciated.

One of my favourite raid moments ever is still that time my PLD got shredded by Nael, I popped both my defensive CDs plus Bloodbath, emergency tanked for 15 seconds while the tank was raised and healed, then passed aggro back to him with an Elusive Jump. I love DRG, I really do. :D

Whenever I see the squishies getting squished I try and do what I can, although as a NIN main this is a lot easier than most simply because we can make whoever we want the main tank.

I do this even when I'm playing a ranged DPS. If I see a mob peel off to a DPS or healer, then that mob becomes public enemy #1 until such time as it is either 1) dead or 2) back in the tank's custody. Other party members are not as sturdy as a tank, nor are they on the receiving end of focused healing the way the tank should be during a pull. It's way too easy for squishier members of the party to die before the tank notices the mob isn't on him anymore or the healer notices someone else is getting hit. Best case scenario, the other DPS focuses on what's hitting them in the face as well, we play ping-pong with it for a few seconds till it dies, then we return to our regularly scheduled pull. Worst case scenario, I end up fighting it alone and pulling out all the stops (defensive cd's, taking the mob to the tank, self-heals, slowing/binding the mob and kiting if all else fails) and hoping to god that the healer notices something is hitting me. I honestly kinda thought this was just a 'me thing' because I'm actually a tank main. :3

It's happened a lot in my time playing, and I always try to pick anything the healers get. Usually I just pull it straight to the tank and he'll realize something happened and provoke or build back up the hate through other means.

As a NIN, I'd hit the person with {Smoke Screen}, hit the mob a few times, then hit the tank with {Shadewalker}.

Nice! I have Shade Shift and Keen Flurry as NIN to help me in moments like this. I wish I could use Bloodbath.

They are for all classes, but not all jobs.
