If this article is true, what does this entail for the PS3 version of FFXIV? Probably nothing will change at this moment, but it's something to think about.

...lmao. Love things like that, honestly.Quote:
Mighty Ape Games have subsequently removed the Facebook post (which is why it is no longer viewable on this article). It would appear that someone has let this slip before Sony was ready to publicly acknowledge the discontinuation.
On a more serious note, PS3 support should have been dropped like yesterday. I know a lot of people play on PS3 (I see many screenshots and GODS they look awful), I know a lot of people still love that console - but it's been evident from several dev response that its hardware is holding the game back. Think of how long it took them to implement something as simple as a TP bar for the party list. I understand the reasons for wanting to be as widespread as possible, but when that actually starts to build a wall around the product... Not convinced it's a good balance. So yeah, I hope Sony actually makes this official sooner rather than later, and then we can move on with less shackles on our feet.
It has been said since day 1 that the PS3 support will be dropped at some point, probably by 4.0, or 5.0 being the furthest point in time when we say bye-bye.
Well that was confusing, I thought you meant they were discontinuing a trailer on PS3, which made no sense to me... I was going "Did PS3 have something extra with that trailer?", thanks by the way, hadn't watched that in a while, ah nostalgia~
I wonder if they'll bring back the PS4 upgrade campaign when they finally drop PS3 support...
The linked article was updated to say that the PS3 is being discontinued locally in New Zealand. There's no support for the console being discontinued worldwide, you'll just be unable to get more from local retailers if you happen to live in New Zealand after they run out of their current stock.
I'd like to take this opportunity to once again say that this game should have NEVER been released for the PS3.
Of course, the moment that the support is dropped for the PS3, watch all the pitchforks turn toward PS4 players.
even as somone, who if i didn't have my laptop to play this on, would have opted for playing the PS3 version (until i could get a PS4 at least), i still think it should be discontinued sooner rather that later.
even when 2.0 was release PS3 was old hardware. even a simpler graphics card on a pc or laptop (like mine) can do what the PS3 can do and better with more memory.
It's only new Zealand though (so far) the real question is when will individual game companies stop supporting ps3 online servers. Ps3 may have its hardware limits but really what will happen (on ff14 at least) is a large drop in playerbase. We're already experiencing population lows on many servers and giving ps3 the axe will only add to that as most people with ps3 don't want a monthly PS plus subscription just to play online. Hopefully it's handled in a way where its not "say goodbye to all ps3 users after this maintenance"
PS3 discontinued today, PS4 tomorrow, PC never.

Next year it would be, if developer resources weren't the real constraint. There's some pretty awesome upgrades coming to PC's next year: PCIe or DDR4 hosted XPoint-based SSDs, new GPU chips from NVidia, new Broadwell-E CPUs from Intel. I've put off upgrading as a result, and now plan to update both my wife's and my own gaming systems next year, including going to UHD monitors with Gsync (or the equivalent).
It will be glorious.
sad decision, one would think..
Unfortunately we still play a game which supports a 9 year old (my god!) console.
(on phone, for some reason I posted the first part :|)
Unless PS3 hardware sales have fallen through the floor, I'd still anticipate a 10 year life at retail in major markets. An announcement in a relatively small national market in NZ is not a global discontinuation/
Probably because without the ps3, square will have no excuse as to why somethings cut out or limited and when they continue to limit things after the ps3s death, PS4 HOLDN US BACK.
Not my thoughts, just what id imagine to come out of the ps3 drop as people complain about everything
Just waiting on 5.0 for the confirmation.
Finally. Was about time that last gen gets discontinued, should have happened 2 years ago. Here's to no more compromised video games. Also now they can do much more stuff in XIV that the PS3 was too weak for, for example a complete open world without loading screens between zones or more physics based stuff.
Uhm.. you're gonna always have loading screens.
So, show of hands, who all here lives in New Zealand? I ask cause that seems to be the only affected country by this news.
I would say Sony going to support the PS3 for least another year.
No, it won't. The consoles will be restricting new games there's no doubt about it, but FFXIV? Not a chance. Do you honestly believe that the FFXIV developers are going to spend millions into improving the engine, implement high quality assets, proper hair physics utilizing TressFX/HairWorks, enough to push upcoming AMD and Nvidia 16nm cards to the max? No, the game barely strains out my current GPU and uses only 1-1.5 VRAM, let alone require high speed memory like HBM. Could they do it? Yes. Will they? No. You said if developer's resources weren't a real constraint, but the fact is that they are and there's not ifs or buts about it.
Yeah, because the game was made with PS3 in mind. A horribly outdated console.
I wrote that the high-end PC I plan to build (two of) next year "will be glorious." In response,
Yes, it will be. SE doesn't have to do anything. Just having FFXIV on a 31+" UHD monitor pushing 8 million 10-bit-color pixels at 70+FPS will be glorious, a marked improvement over my current setup. And that will be easily possible by Summer 2016.
Please look forward to it.
I wouldn't know, I have a great PC.
Better look at the game's actual requirements vs new, modern PC hardware if you want to be taken seriously ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
PC hardware and software is improving constantly and PC hardware is interchangeable since you don't seem to know, unlike consoles, hence why PS3 being phased out is even a topic, and why PC's won't be phased out en masse in our lifetimes most likely.
In about 6-10 years, give or take, the same thing will happen to PS4 if SE happens to be running any games with PC and PS4 players playing together.
I covered that later in my post, using it as an argument against PS4 is unfair, simply put. If resources weren't a constraint then no household computer today could run any game maxed out, so that kinda invalidates your point entirely... but reading back I guess that may not have been your point? I've got no clue, but it seems so since you implied that next year the PS4 would be holding FFXIV back like it was a fact. Even upcoming 16nm GPUs won't be capable of rendering a lot of things in real time. I don't even think whatever engine FFXIV runs on is capable of pushing out any more without major improvements, which would be better spent on creating a new game entirely. I don't think UHD FFXIV will be easily done even in 2016, if we're talking in raid environments with a lot going on. It'll definitely be doable on a high end single GPU though, probably the Fury/Titan X equivalent of 2016. But who knows? It seems like the 16nm tech is going to bring in major improvements, but I feel like I hear that every other day when in reality it's a 20-30% boost at most but I've done little to no research on this tech. I do hope it's a major improvement, been looking to upgrade my 290x for sometime but nothing has been worth the investment when I can run just about everything on this.
But anyway, I don't even know how some people play FFXIV on PS4 with that nasty 30 FPS, sub 30 sometimes! Developers always seem to prioritize visuals over decent FPS, but I guess visuals sell a game better than "This runs at 60+ FPS!!".
Ah, but PC hardware is not ALL interchangeable. And I would know, I've built my last 2 :P You said PC's don't get discontinued, which, they don't, but their hardware and software does. Its basically the same thing that consoles go through. Operating systems become unsupported, or hardware isn't enough to run a game or program.
A PC is just a generalized name for the hardware, its not a platform. My point was hardware and software becomes obsolete, just like consoles.
You can think of a console as the games "recommended specs". sure you can have a pc that will run games for years, but after awhile, it will fall below those recommended specs. essentially its time to buy another "console" to get back above recommended specs for a few years. Same thing, just a different way to do it.
Eventually vista and 7 support would end for XIV, just like XP support has ended for a lot of MMOs. eventually that processor and video card you have will be unable to run the game, if they do any engine upgrades in a few years.
Drop PS3 support today.
Bring back open robes and armored tails.
