Game freezes with a stuttering sound periodically

Hello,

I will play this game and sometimes it will run for hours, sometimes less than an hour, and then it will freeze, and the sound will stutter. Sometimes, when this happens, if I mash some keys (esc, tab, etc) quickly, it will recover. Most times I have to use the reset button on my computer. I don't have any problems with SWTOR or Battlefield 4 or other games I've played. Upon rebooting I can't find anything useful in the event logs, and I really don't know where else to look for logs for this game. Usually it happens when I'm just sitting in one place for a while crafting or something but it has frozen up on me in a dungeon as well, or while running through a city.

i have the same thing, using win 10 and directx 11 two 980's in sli. its really frustrating.

I am also experiencing this. It's killing me trying to figure out how to fix it. I'm running Windows 10, Directx 11 with an Nvidia GTX 770. My computer uses Realtek HD Audio. All my drivers are updated. Usually happens in-doors or underground for some reason.

I've put a ticket in to try an resolve this. I'll post any helpful information I get. I am noticing a trend that everyone with this problem has Realtek HD Audio, an Nvidia/Geforce GPU and windows 10.

Guys, do yourself a huge favor and get a stand alone sound card, you'll thank me in the morning:)

Aside from this (and perhaps before making the investment in new hardware), it's worth making sure the related drivers are fully up to date. Also, it can be worth going into the device manager, digging around the power management settings, and making sure all power saving features are turned off for affected subsystems.

Good luck to all those having this issue.

So all I got from the SE ticket was to try port forwarding and that windows 10 isn't officially supported. Not sure what else to do.

So I'm starting to think that some communication between Realtek HD Audio and FFXIV is causing the problem for windows 10 users. I'd like some feedback from you guys if this works. Right Click on the speaker icon, click on playback devices and disable your realtek speaker or whatever is enabled through realtek. boot up FFXIV. after that you can go back to your recording devices and enable realtek again. if you dont see it right click and hit show disabled devices. the game has been running smoothly since that for me. unfortunately no audio in ffxiv.

Yesterday I've tried disabling my Realtek HD Audio via Windows, at first I've thought it worked, but today it freezed again, disabling the Onboard sound entirely via Bios has also not worked.

Also checked thermal paste
Cleaned coolers
Updated drivers
Reinstalled windows 10
Changed cables from HDMI to VGA
Checked/tested/swapped memories
Stress tested processor and GPU
Disabled USBs
Defragmented HDD
Underclocked GPU
Lowered in-game settings
Tried DX9 version
Installed VCRedist
/chkdsk
sfc /scannow
And probably other things that I can't remember

Make sure you're disabling it every time you relaunch FFXIV, but yeah this is a crazy inconvenience and i've yet to find a permanent solution.

Have either of you tried turning off power saving for your pci-e hardware? I had similar issues a few months back with my Radeon 7870, and disabling the power save mode fixed the issue for me. Some one else mentioned it on the first page too.

I did, and by disabling it via BIOS windows don't even detect the sound driver, as if I had no sound card.

Based on everything and every account of reports I've seen for similar problems, it has to be an issue with windows 10 & ffxiv communicating.

Having the same problem with Windows 7. Tried everything suggested in this thread short of getting a sound card, and I still have the stuttering issues.

Can we start getting more information from people in terms of GPUs, CPUs, OS, and drivers for audio/video? Surprised this problem persists in Win 7.

OK, I finally got some canned air and blew out all the crud buildup in my PC. There was a lot of blockage in one of the case fans, but the CPU and GPU were basically pretty clean. I also turned off the power saving and changed my sound settings from stereo to dolby 5.1. I'll see about the speaker on/off trick if I continue to see problems.

STILL having this problem. hard locks, noise spam, have to reboot sometimes I get 5 min of play, sometimes I get hours, but it ALWAYS ends with a crash
all my drivers are updated, I'm using win 10, realtek audio hd, gigabyte g1 mobo that is updated. 2 msi 980s in sli. 12 gigs of ram. intel i7 980. love the game, but this is frustrating. also tried compatibility mode, and run as admin.

Could try forcing Windows to use the HPET clock instead of the mixed APIC/TimeStampControl and such that are likely in use by default. This has supposedly been a fix of sorts for some stutter issues with SLI in the past in some scenarios as well. It's an old and often forgotten tweak that even up through Windows 8, never gets set up as the central timer out of the box (doesn't always improve things when legacy hardware is in play)---may be the same for Win10 as well.

Check the System Devices section of Device Manager to see if there is an instance of High Precision Event Timer installed---if so, it is already active in your BIOS and Windows installed it but may not be using it exclusively. If not present, check your BIOS to see if you have the option to enable it there. Once you can confirm it is installed in Device Manager, you can force Windows to use it exclusively. It is a higher resolution timer than most other options and thus (in theory) provides better synching across multiple devices.

To force Windows to use it, run this command from an administrative CMD prompt and then reboot:

To unlock it and set it back to using the mixed timers again, run this from an admin CMD prompt and reboot:

There used to be a tool floating around where you could verify the clock speed and such, as well as a button to click for enable/disable HPET. Will dig around to see if I can find a link for it.

Uggh... looks like Win10 is doing something different when it comes to the synching. Just another monkey wrench thrown into the mix. Basically...it's gonna depend on your specific rig on whether using HPET exclusively, as part of the mix, or disabling it entirely (both Windows and then BIOS) will help improve things. It has a link to a Harmonic app that will display your timer's resolution as well as allow you to toggle HPET on/off exclusively. Used it to toggle it off then back on for my Win8 x64 laptop and it works to turn it on and off. The app passes the BCEDIT commands, so you may need to run it as admin for it to work properly (just instinctively right-clicked it when I ran it). The download page has links at the bottom to external sources from Microsoft about the timers for those who want to get their geek on about the topic.

from nvidia drivers 358.50 back to 355.98 ... for me this was first suspect coz this was only thing what i install in that time

ok trying raist technique, with the hpet and will report back, it was currently on but in 32 bit mode. I tried it with it disabled in bios and device manager, rebooted, still got the same thing, so now ive got it enabled again and in 64bit mode. I cant the command line listed above, it ran successfully, closed it out, now to reboot and try the game again. I will report back with what happens....come on fingers crossed

so after rebooting, the game crashed again. BUT, when I boot up and then enable the code again "bcdedit /set useplatformclock true" I have not had it crash, but I have had to enter the code every time I boot up. but have yet to have it crash, will continue to test.

over a dozen hours now put in, the fix that raist put up has been working for me. before I start the game, I go to command prompt as admin, put in the edit line, hit enter, says it completes successfully, then I run game, zero crashes doing this. BUT, like earlier, if I run the command and then reboot, it will crash. putting it in prior to my game session has been the ONLY thing that has worked.
