How about some Coliseum PvE?

So, Wolve's Den is getting some love in the next patch?

Sound's great, for PvP players. I'm not fond of PvP, but I do like co-op play, so....

What about some PvE action in the Coliseum? Not sure this has been specifically suggested before, apologies if it has...

This is something that structurally is similar to co-op play in several online games as well as things like the Tower of Souls in Soul Calibur 4. It's not entirely open ended, but with sufficient randomization no two runs would be the same, providing at least some additional variety.

Players can try their hand in the Coliseum arena against the worst beasts that Eorzea has to offer...

3 modes; Single player, a duo or a light party vs a gauntlet of increasingly dangerous enemies.

There will need to be some RNG applied to the enemies to ensure that the incoming waves are unpredictable.

The strength of each group of enemies should vary a bit as well, so once again, it's not entirely predictable.

The arena should randomly impost status attacks on the player(s) to provide a bit more challenge and variety. Starting off slowly, but increasing frequency as time passes.

The arena should be open air with weather from crystal clearskies to Drybone thunderstorms and different phases of the day/night. Again this will provide some natural variation in the conditions of the fight.

There needs to be a crowd of NPCs watching as if this were spectator sport (which it's meant to be) - including appropriate ambient cheering. Non-combatant players should be able to watch a match in progress for a nominal gil fee, say 25g.

Finally some degree of fatigue should be applied over time to drain the main stats of all players with the maximum impact being a 50% reduction in stats due to fatigue.

Every 5 waves of enemy, hunt marks should show up as additional challenges. The hunt marks should scale their HP and attack power, or increase the number of marks appearing based on the duration of the fight so far. Single players get B rank marks starting with 1 and potentially facing as many as 4 scaled up B ranks at once. 2 player teams should face A-rank marks and light party groups should face S ranks. These additional challenges should lead to specific rewards once the event is over, based on how far the player got.

The coliseum should be available for entry once a day with a 1000g/player entrance fee. Use whatever gear you want, this isn't PvP so we have no anonymity to protect...

Ultimately the fatigue on your stats, the random status effects and the sheer weight of numbers should provide sufficient difficulty to end the run, but the number and strength of the enemies faced would increase continually during your 'run', so no matter how good a player, or well geared you are, sooner or later you'll fall.

the 'prize' received upon completion should be based on your progress and how many hunt marks you defeated. Players would receive Wolf Marks awarded based on fight progress and duration. Allied seals should be awarded based on the number and difficulty scale of the hunt marks slain, though the number of seals should be reduced because you are potentially killing several elite marks in a single fight sequence, otherwise this would be too easy to progress Allied seals through. There should be a maximum possible Marks and Seals award, to prevent the content from being abused. However there could be a final treasure chest reward granted if the player(s) should hit the maximum reward level before falling.

An additional prize each week should be awarded to the top 20 placed on the leader boards in each category. These rewards should be a combination of Gil, Wolf Marks and Allie Seals.

11th - 20th : 5,000g
6th - 10th : 5,000g + 50 Wolf Marks
4th & 5th : 5,000g + 50 Wolf Marks + 50 Allied Seals
3rd place : 7,500g + 50 Marks + 50 seals
2nd place : 7,500g + 75 Marks +75 seals
1st place : 10,000g + 100marks + 100 seals.

No XP is awarded in this combat.

All in all this would provide some additional content for PvE players who have either capped out on end-game, or players who just want more PvE action and are not mad keen on fighting other players.

Well, that's my crazy Thursday afternoon idea, what about you?

If it is challenging enough, why not.
Randomly generated content has the higher replayability, atleast in my opinion.

I can see players spending hours on time trials and the like for this. So, solid and addictive idea.
Chock it full of humor, like that cheating pirate in the Maelstrom Lower La Noscea windmills, and other fun commentary between trials and people will grind it for months to get all the dialogue quotes.

Unfortunately, I also see SCH and WAR dream team duos on the top charts too.

well we do have the gold saucer. That would be a great place to implement such an idea as they have done it before in FF7.

Customize then duel other people in the open world (other people can watch.)

Sounds like a good idea to me too. Maybe have difficulty settings with scaling rewards upon completion instead of random difficulties.

They could limit usage with tieing it to leve allowance which would give a use for them at max level.

Yeah, I was thinking in terms of re-activating the Coliseum in Ul'Dah, the idea of fighting the beasts of Eorzea in a gladiatorial arena reminds me of the Roman Colosseum.

Mmm, yes, thats a good idea, it would naturally limit itself based on player allowance use.

Plus there should be a few quests with a story that shows us the lore of the coliseum in order to 'enable' the Coliseum for use.

I think the minion arena fights will be at the saucer and they fit the more whimsical feel of that place, I was thinking that this would fit the coliseum in Ul'Dah better.

Time trials, yes that would be great and another leaderboard is born. Adding in humor and 'color commentary' would add a lot of fun similar to the off beat humor in the Ratchet and Clank games.

Indeed, the replayability depends on making this challenging, and scaling the challenge overtime so that as players gain power, they get further in to the fights and as they do the difficulty escalates until it's too mucj.

Perhaps we could have multiple venues, the coliseum, the island you're suggesting and others for more variety. More variety = more replay value.

There's also the possibility of one venue in Halatali. Sure, it's been dungeonized, but they did mention in the Halatai HM quest that they were working on stocking it up as a Coliseum and that your party would be helping them out by test-running it. I'm sure that they'd be done by the time this would be ready to be implemented. So that's a third optional area =D

Just make separate rankings for each job, problem solved.

I still want single player battles in the golden saucer that people can spectate you doing and award MGP. The coliseum was my favorite thing in FF7's golden saucer.

Well, technically the Gold Saucer is in Thanalan and near Ul'Dah, so couldn't the coliseum in Ul'Dah fit the bill for that?

If we want it to reward MGP, it would be best to put it in the Golden Saucer.

If not, we will have to somehow explain that the Mandervilles are using the coliseum and expanding their casino and currency there. That might be grounds for an amusing story and provides an opportunity for the Warrior of Light to fight the Mandervilles in gladiatorial combat.

I like that idea, we've been missing the Manderville men, that could be a great series of sidequests to play.

I would add in PvP as well for the salt in the soup. :-)

and so on.

For entering Coliseum it is mandatory to form a group of Tank, Heal, DD, DD.
During Coliseum it will NOT be possible to change the chosen class.

We know that Hildi season 2 is in the works, so they should be back soon.

I'd absolutely love something like this. Personally my end game really never is about beating the absolute hardest group content, since I'm always about how much I've improved and group content can be so much about one other person who isn't doing their best cancelling out what I can do. I love to challenge myself in a solo experience against earlier content designed for groups (right now I'm trying to see if I can solo t6 on my PLD, though even with undersized echo and plenty of Eso gear I can best manage to get the second cluster down to 15% before the traps spawn and kill me). Being able to do a challenge like this and see how far I can push my own skill with my character would be my favorite feature in the game.

I wouldn't like it if it mixed PvE and PvP into the same "instance", so to speak. That would alienate those who like PvE but not PvP. Better to have two categories of entry, in that case. It'd make it easier to award PvP exp for the PvP category of it, too.

Now Imagine you can use your build up retainers here :D and you can train them and equip them so your team will be raising up as you are going spending time inside here.

Oh, it would be great to be able to run as a duo or light party with your retainers in this kind of thing, a great option for when your friends are busy, or you just feel like doing somehting solo.

Repeatable content that varies with each run? Count me in. Leaderboards that reward prizes to the top preforming players? Just no. Leaderboards in games are fine in theory, but in practice there is ALWAYS a way to cheat the system, and some players will find that no matter what. If there is a leaderboard, it should be purely statistical at best, and not offer any additional rewards. It should also be divided into categories based on Server, Grand Company, Free Company, and Friends List, as well as have sorting options based on Role and Job. Any prizes from the content should be purely based on how far you get within your run.....

Also, I see no reason to restrict your run to once a day of this type of content. Maybe have there be a roulette that pays out better that can be done once a day, but no restriction on how many non-roulette runs you can do. In addition, there should be different categories of enemy styles, such as DPS builds, Tank builds, or Healer builds. Otherwise, SCHs or self healing tanks in particular would always be able to get farther in solo attempts than any DPS could, simply due to the fact that non-caster DPS self healing is VERY limited, (as a MCH, I don't even have a self heal aside from potions)......

Ultimately though, content of this type would be a great addition to the game in my opinion, in whatever way they implement it.....
