Lag Issue - ISP or Hardware?

The above image is an example of the latency issues I've been having where the map takes a bit to load for some reason. I've also experienced issues in Duty Finder where I will click an ability to cast it I see the bar come to completion and can keep casting but nothing visually/audio happens then all of the sudden it catches up. Icons will be slow to load when turning in quest items to an NPC, and sometimes after completing a quest or trying to converse with an NPC will cause pause as well.

I have Verizon FiOS 50/50 and I ran a ping test overnight to google just to see if there were any packets lost but it looked good:

I'm really kind of stumped because it's better then my desktop I played on but performs worse? The only thing I can think of is that the monitor I use is plugged into the HDMI port on the Intel integrated chip that links to the GEForce dedicated GPU, I haven't experienced any problems with other games though, maybe I'll have to just use the laptop's monitor? Or maybe my monitor is too old? Not sure :confused:

Well I tried just using the laptop monitor that didn't change anything.
I'm running the DX9 version of the game maybe I should try DX11?

You need to search for the ip of your ffxiv server and ping that. Pinging Google only shows you home connection and service providers network is good. But all NA server are in Montreal Canada. So most lag comes from everyone trying to hit the same server. I use pingzapper and that resolved my issues as it makes my internet traffic take higher priority internet lanes. Especially my buddy who is a ninja.

This is probably your issue. You generally won't see it during off hours, but during prime time & the hours surrounding it FIOS tends to get 20-50% packet loss to the Montreal servers. Next time it happens open CMD and type "pathping YOURSERVERIPHERE > c:\FFXIVping.txt" (without quotes) & hit enter. It runs a more thorough test checking all of the hops to see where the packets are dropped. If you're lucky it'll just be a wireless issue & you can grab an ethernet cord or power to ethernet adapter. If not, I've found tethering with my phone works way better than FIOS for ARR+Ventrillo/Teamspeak.

I don't use wireless at home just Ethernet. I don't see how 50/50 fiber is worse than 25/5 Xfinity cable internet I used to have. When I run tracert to Montreal and other IP's I always get a time out after the last Verizon hop:

Because the upload/download speeds are irrelevant, a 1.5MB DSL line could potentially be better for games. Latency & packet loss are what cause us issues. FIOS has a reputation for overcrowding their hops & throttling bandwidth, but then what isp doesn't these days?

That's a webserver (ping eidos.com, justcause2.com, or about a dozen other game sites under the EIDOS brand and you'll get that IP). It's hosted on i-web servers (different company), in a different section of town, and has nothing to do with gameplay.

Either use the lobby servers (their DNS names are embedded in the game files), or after logging fully into the game load Resource Monitor (resmon from search/run box) to find the IP used by FFXIV or run netstat . The servers in Canada start with 199, Japan's start with 124 (there may be some calls to addresses starting with 125 or 202 intermittently, but the game play will be on 199 or 124 depending on the region). These were the the DNS names for the lobby servers last time I looked at the files:

As for the different bandwidth plans, anything beyond about 512 - 768k is nearly irrelevant for gameplay. Your bandwidth is not the speed of your transfer....that remains constant based on the medium in use (each type of cable runs the same unit of distance per second regardless of the bandwidth---all copper lines will be the same, all standard fiber will be the same, all dark fiber will be the same). Different bandwidth plans are like different sized vehicles...a bus carries more people than a car, but they could be traveling the same speeds. 4 people get to Chicago in the same time frame whether they are in a sedan, a van, or a bus. The game's payload needs really only exceed the 1Mbit mark during initial loading of zones, or possibly in the case of an extremely large amount of players on screen and such. Watch your send/receive numbers when in a crowded town. If you are pegging 3000bytes/second....that is only 24kbps of bandwidth being used. IDK if the interface would even scale to 1Mbit in the game...that would be 125,000 bytes.

What matters is your latency and not your bandwidth. It is the delays in the transmission between server and client that cause the problem. Sudden, massive spikes due to congestion that is overloading hardware along your route wreaks havoc in gameplay. You should have fairly consistent response times that increment steadily from hop to hop in proportion to the distance traveled. Highly inconsistent numbers at a hop (or between hops) within a single test sample, or wide variances across multiple samples are often an indicator of increased load that is straining the network segments your ISP has assigned you to take to get to Ormuco (SE's ISP).

When found, such samples should be investigated by your ISP's Tier3 support team and adjustments made to either remedy the elevated congestion or to route around it. It IS within the power of your ISP to manage this...the fact that you can subscribe to VPN services that provide you a means to alter your routing somewhat yourself is evidence enough that it can be managed to improve things, but there are those here and at other sites that have managed to get their ISP's involved to address such issues so they don't have to resort to using a VPN full time.

But you need to provide GOOD data: good and bad samples for this service, as well as comparison to other services as well--to draw a contrast (alternatively you can show good traces through a VPN against bad traces with no VPN in use). And you need to be getting that data to the Tier3 support team for review. Not the guy at the help desk that walks you through rebooting the modem, and not the guy that comes check your lines and installs new splitters/connectors or swaps your modem---Tier3 is a higher level group that deals with the more complex networking issues beyond your localized network components.

You may need to push hard for the escalation if you are using the phone. People typically fair better going about the process through online options. You can check your ISP's site for an official support portal, or check these sites to see if there are options listed (social media, outsourced forum, etc.):

I wish Pingzapper worked better but being that it causes 900002's a lot I'm hesitant to try the retail version/subscription, I might try WTFast next. I would honestly rather use some rerouting service then having to deal with "customer service" again if I can help it.

yeah.. need to get away from those congested level3 nodes. Been buggered up for a while now...not just an issue in the scope of XIV either. You can find their hops in reports for WoW, GW2, LoL... The car2 addresses are frequent offenders, but lately we've been seeing a lot of reports of issues between Verizon/alter.net and Level3 in various areas---not just NY and Canada, but also out on the west coast and southern midwest as well.

They have the capability to move users to TATA or Cogent in those troubled areas (Time Warner moves me around at least once or twice a month trying to avoid issues)...they just refuse to do what is best for their customers.

The really odd thing too is that Verizon's alter.net/UUNET group (AS701) peers with Ormuco....and yet they are still switching you off to Level3 to get from Washington, DC to Montreal. That division originated in/around Virginia decades ago, and has very established routes through the north east corridors.

Although...the way mergers/acquisitions go these days, some of those lines could have gotten absorbed by Level3 somewhere along the line, which might explain why so many Verizon customers wind up on them. It's just plain weird though. It isn't a new problem...they've seen the warning signs for nigh on 2 decades now, and there have been multiple filings with the FCC over it since the turn of the century. And yet, even after the Netflix debacle where Verizon got caught red-handed deliberately choking connectivity to it's competitors (and let's not forget the recent Time Warner merger debates)....these ISP's just continue to neglect and abuse customers.

Want the 90k errors to stop(which is a disconnected from server error) you need to fork out money.

I've been trying WTFast (unpaid for the moment) and picking different servers not on the east coast, such as Chicago, a Canada server, I tried south on a Georgia server. It seems to help some, but not enough. If I do call/online chat with Verizon (although I'm still worried about the physical state of the installation, 10 hours for the guy to install it and the way the fiber looks just bugs me) what would be the best way to attack them to get some improvement out of my service? Keeping in mind I do live in an apartment complex.

No, it disconnects way before that and repeatedly within a several minute time frame.

This is all utter garbage. Sorry to say. I had shitty internet before I moved (Cincinnati Bell). Now I moved with 144 mbps / 50-60 frame rate within game (TimeWarner Cable). It was going very well up until yesterday/tonight. (I highly doubt within a couple of weeks, the internet has gone bad) It is not our problem. But the server's and therefore SE's. We hadn't had a weekly maintenance for a while now. I'm not sure if that is the case to actually help things not be so laggy. But things posted in this thread is stupid. lol Only thing that makes sense is packet loss. Which could be viable.

Also, to add onto the lag issue, I am still having problems where the game freezes at times when I teleport. This issue needs to be fixed as well. Not only lag.

Others had this issue as well when I was in Duty Roulette: Main Scenario just a bit ago. It isn't just me.

Confirmed issues with TATA routing the last few days through regions on the east coast and through/around Toronto. There were also reports of issues for xo.net out west. Lots of reports for connectivity/stability issues on Time Warner's forums as well for a while now. There are known issues amongst the ISP's that negotiate the routes we are assigned---basically out of SE's sphere of influence.

So no...it isn't "utter garbage". It is a real, well documented problem. There are even filings with the FCC about it.

Oh, and your bandwidth plan has virtually nothing to do with it. The game generally doesn't even need 1mbit of bandwidth to run smoothly. Watch your S/R numbers ingame---that is bytesper second. Multiply it by 8 for the bits.

Take a look at the outage map there. That page links to some TWC Social media and their main site (the logo is a clickable link--should be the same site your bill points you to). The forums are linked on their website as well as their social media pages.

The issues in a lot of those regions on the map will also show up with other services tracked at downdetector.com (can check them out on their Companies page...links to sites for other regions are at the bottom of the page for those not in North America). A lot of it comes from regionally congested/stalling segments...often tied into the peering partner being used to connect the TWC networks to the ISP at the other end of the session. So it may not technically be an issue with TWC (though, sometimes it is an issue at their exchange to a peer), but more an issue with connections to/through the ISP they partner with to get you where you want to go...companies like Level3, TATA, Cogent, xo.net, alter.net/Verizon, etc..

All of this is set up and managed by your ISP to provide you connectivity across the World Wide Web (almost 400k networks in the ARIN database, and that is only ONE of many registries). SE has nothing to do with your ISP's routing policies, nor the details of your ISP's peering arrangements.

I've been having major lag issues since 3.25. At first I thought it might have been my end but it's not. I have hardbooted my modem/router about 5 times each -- most definitely isn't my end. I even went to XIV facebook groups to ask other players if they are experiencing the same lag problems. I was relieved to discover I am not the only one. This lag issue is continuous every few seconds. I start fighting a monster and use one of my abilities... the ability icon on my hotbar greys out and you see the cooldown timer initated.. the animation of my character begins for that ability. Then suddenly, everything stops. My characters stops the animation and the hotbar icon is instantly ready for use again. It's as though the system never registered me using it. Does not matter which job I use, it's always happening.

Here's one example... using ninja, I would either go Ten -> Chi or Chi -> Ten followed by Ninjutsu. This should result in either Raiton or Katon, depending on order of use. However, I would end up with Fuma Shuriken instead because the system didn't register one of my ability uses, messing up the entire chain even though all abilities are on cooldown. Sometimes I have to mash the same button about 5 times ensure it gets used.

Currently facing the same issue. It's definitely not ISP, these ping spikes did not happen previous 3.25 and it's starting to pull out the final straw for me. Tempted to cancel my subscription and take a long break from this game. I see no effort from SE trying to fix it either.

It's been happening to me since 3.2, I've filed multiple tickets about it and I've not even got an automated response. There seems to be no presence on the board from representatives either I posted in the other thread and nothing has happened.

The truth is SE doesn't care because most of the people who are suffering from these issues will stay subscribed so it doesn't affect SE's income. They will not fix whatever's wrong until it starts affecting them. Anyone who is suffering from this issue needs to unsub, SE's customer service is non-existent, there's been no contact on this issue and it's been something that's affected the game since last year judging by the threads.

Let SE know how displeased you are through your wallet. They obviously don't pay attention to the boards so maybe they'll pay attention to a drop in subscribers.

I've actually unsubbed from this game due to the third tier issues I've been getting. From my location I've been experiencing issues with major packet loss and due to my location applications such as wtfast don't work. I've tried locations all over the US, UK, and Canada to try and route myself around the bad hops and nothing has worked. I've done everything within my power, changed my dns, reset my modem and routers, tried wireless and ethernet, kept up on outage issues with my isp and even asked them to try and reroute me. My issue started a week before patch and has continued since then. I cannot participate in raids, I can't even do soph ex. I've had to switch my main class to something that was more forgiving for packet loss just to do roulettes.

As much as I love this game I've been hamstrung by the fact that now I cannot participate in end game. It's not even worth the sub anymore to just log in, cap out, and go find something else to do.

Just wondering if anyone had any idea cause I saw the beginning post and seems the base issue is exactly what I am having as well. I do not know what I can possibly do. :( I've gone after my ISP but they even sent out a tech guy and says that there isn't any problems on their end. *Sighs* :(

The issue is far above that tech's level. And the issues is out of SE's hands. They only process the data coming in, your ISP and peering agreements they have are the issue usually.
