How Many Of You DO NOT Watch Videos Of Fights?

How many of you do not watch videos of others battles, before winning yourself?

I ask out of curiosity, wondered as to the reasons of others do, and to hear their own epic achievements.

Myself, I don't watch videos as I enjoy the "thrill of battle" (Warrior pun) and testing myself & my own creative thinking to figure out the mechanics and forming a strategy to defeat <Insert Boss Fight> in each encounter. It makes the game more difficult for me, which I enjoy and reminds me of a lot of "old school" favorites; in terms of difficulty in doing so. (example: beating contra shattered solider without dying, games like ninja gaiden / megaman / contra / darksouls franchises etc.)

Share opinions, stories, triumphs.

My own favorite to date personally in 14, was when clearing Titan ex. for the first time way back when and the part where the bombs cover the arena. All died and pld+war hallowed/holmganged through > took off the last 2% for the win.
Shiva ex was pretty amazing to learn as well for the time.

Favorite non-clear, before that was same fight and I remember 1st time saw 5-way landslide "Titan you ass...." lol

personally i feel terrible if i dont watch a video before entering harder/extreme content, i don't like being a burden to my teammates but thats just me.
if i want the fun of learning a dungeon/trial/raid from scratch i'll play it on release day when everyone else is just as knowledgeable as i am
going into fractal continuum on the first few days of heavenswards release was one of the funnest dungeons to play with a full party of people who had no idea what was happening!

Depends on how old the content. If I'm in a progression static or if the content is less than a month old, I won't watch a video. I might discuss tactics with other players though depending on my mood.
For single player games....never.

I don't watch vids on MS dungeons or trials but hard modes and 24 man raids I do

Depends on the age of the content, if it's over a week old I'll watch the video if MTQ has one up. I don't want to be a hindrance to my team.

I'll listen to pre-fight advice/stuff to watch for from players, but I'm not going to do homework for my recreation. That's just idiotic.

I main as a paladin and I never watch video on how to best the boss.I'm more of the I'll learn it when I get to it kinda guy. Worked out fine so far.

Nothing wrong with attempting content blind. Especially if its new content or on the Duty finder.

The problem is when those people join an experienced party finder group and expects everyone else to carry them.

for new raids, i like to know if there's a mechanic i need to be looking out for. For example, not knowing about the anti-healer mechanic on A4 would get messy real quick.

I think most players would prefer not to watch videos before trying out the fight themselves. Why do you think there's such a huge rush on launch day when new content is up? The login queue is not simply because everybody is trying to get the new gear.

Anyway, there is a sense of accomplishment in figuring this stuff out yourself, so I don't think I'd fault you for not looking. However if I'm several patches behind, I don't see the point in forcing players who have obviously memorized that fight to spend 60 minutes dying so I can figure it out on my own. I'd probably try the fight once on my own (just for that wtf reaction when the shit hits the fan) and see how far I get. After that, I'll watch the video on its mechanics. Note that this does not stop me from chatting with other players or reading guides.

For dungeons and story trials, no. Those don't need a video; mechanics can either be figured out on the fly or explained if absolutely necessary.

But I do watch videos for raids and EX Primals because those have a lot of mechanics and I'd rather not bring the rest of the party down by trying to figure stuff out, UNLESS we've all agreed to tackle it blind.

I don't watch videos for anything, because what would be the point in doing it then. Doesn't matter how old the encounter is. Of course I won't bother with already running party finder groups. I have to respect the other players and my own reputation. Though once it's on duty finder, all bets are off. I will read a written guide about the encounter, as this doesn't ruin the anticipation of the encounter.

I watch guides for extreme and savage content only. Unless I am struggling with something. The other stuff is simple enough to wing it.

Only time I don't is when content is new, in the first couple of days. In the end, the only thing not watching the fight is doing, is holding the other 3-23 people back. You aren't figuring it out, and overcoming it, you are being carried by the rest who know it. Anyone who actually wants to "figure out the fight, and overcome it" would create a PF for going in blind, and get as many fresh faces in the group as they could.

Lucky for me, I'm caught up in everything, so I get to enjoy it all blind, with blind groups.

If I'm going in with friends I usually won't, as I kind of like experiencing the fights freshly. But for a static or with folks I don't know, I'll usually watch a video, and then read a guide (the information sticks better for me if I read it).

Same here, but change "a month old" to "less than a week old.

I didn't watch any videos for Alexander normal because I felt the content was new enough when I did it that most videos/guides would be hastily thrown together messes. I read a text guide for A4 on Reddit and it entirely missed the Quarantine mechanism so I was surprised as heck.

Depends on the content. I don't watch videos for CT level raids or dungeons. I do watch them for coil/savage level raids and ex primals. That is unless I have established with my raid that we can do a blind run first for fun.

As several already said here. I also don't watch videos.
For 4-man content and HM Trials I just go in blind, these are easy enough to do so, especially since I am a healer and very few have anti-healer mechanics or stuff I need to do above healing.
For harder content I read guides, unless it's extremely new.

I don't necessarily wait to watch before I *win* but I usually at least attempt the fight enough to the point where I'm looking for clarification on whatever mechanic is troublesome.

Watching a video without any experience of the fight doesn't really help someone like me at all. It just doesn't jive with my learning style and I don't really gain anything out of it, and I still end up fumbling around just as much as if I hadn't watched it.

Never videos.. Too much time and don't care to have to listen. I read at least one if not multiple guides, though.

i have done every fight in the game blind except one, T5, T5 was the first coil battle i did since i was filling in a spot for a friends static so i had to watch a fight to understand what was going to happen :D we didn't win o3o but then i joined there static :D

Big perk to running stuff early; can screw up a lot and no one cares (because they're screwing up too :D )

I do not watch videos mainly cuz videos dont teach me anything i learn on physical memory which is impossible to get by videos and outside titan i never have any isssues and only reason why i have issue with titan is that titan IS A 0 SKILL extreme primal its only based on how good your Connection is

I usually try to avoid watching videos, instead I read the abilities and the strategies, while reading spoils a bit of the fight it's still only words, the visuals is still a surprise and epic the first time. Though most of the time I don't read either, especially when it's the first week, I didn't watch/read anything about any fight released in HW until I been in them at least once.

Depends on the genre of game we're talking about here. Since this is the FFXIV forum though, imma assume in terms of MMO games, since my answer to single player games is simple anyway, which is "Never".

It depends on how old the content is. I'll only watch videos if the content is a month old or older. (With MAYBE an exception here and there) If said content is any younger than that, then I'm going in blind. Course, given just how unusually fast people insist on throwing up tutorial guides and all that just after a day or three after the release of content, a week at most is suddenly old content to most people these days. And mind you, I only do this for EX primals and the harder optional raid dungeons. Though I'm aiming to be among those who are charging in blind into the new 24-man raid content, despite not having done Alexander yet.

So again, a month has to have passed before I consider it older content to watch videos on. That's just the way I am.

I read at least one guide and watch at least one guide because I don't want to be a liability for my group more than I have to be as a new person.

I don't always need guides, but better safe than sorry. And better to be informed before going in rather than make people either have to sit there and explain what I could have read or watched beforehand, wipe because of me, or carry me through.

Yeah, this is why I run new dungeons as early as possible. I do not watch videos for anything that isn't an EX Primal or Coil/Alexander. I like to figure things out myself and guess at it. That's partly what makes the game so much fun.

I almost always watch a video before a Trial/Raid/Dungeon that's new to me. I don't like going in blind.

I've tried watching videos but I literally get nothing from it. Oh, sure, you see the fight but that's not really experiencing it. You're just watching someone else play and that's about as educational as learning to drive by watching traffic. Only way I can really learn a fight is by getting in the fight, getting pointers and then actually fighting. I've never understood the hate for those that learn this way, either. I mean, how did the people who made the videos learn, did they have Yoshida carry them through the fight? I highly doubt it. But this community tends to be very impatient towards people trying to learn a fight by doing.

I never watch vids. I prefer to learn in the fight.

I'm more than happy to explain content to newbies, too. It's more entertaining for everyone that way, I think.

I made it a point to make sure to be up to date when HW released so I could discover the content without guides being available. However, for anything that's not new, I won't be selfish enough to join a DF group not having watched a video or read a guide.

I don't watch videos because I don't learn anything from them.
I've tried, and the most I get is "well they did a nice job clearing that content".

I much rather read guides/experience the fight in order to learn.
So just remember when you ask "did you watch a vid" and I say no that doesn't mean I have no idea what to do.


edit: for when I read guides, I mostly do for all ex primals (not always) and raids (always).
dungeons I won't read guides.

Personally i never watch videos as i'm always on the frontlines of a fight and learn it before there is a video out.

Me, because I think healer job only healing lol.

I don't watch guides for 4-man dungeons, they've been easy enough to figure out.

8-man trials and raids (24-man or Coil/Alexander) I'll watch or read a guide since the mechanics are usually more involved and I main a tank, so it's bad news if I don't have at least some clue what I'm doing.

Also, most people give cliff notes versions of explanations that I don't understand until we've wiped a few times anyway, so it's better if I study on my own.

you should watch one no matter what in my opinion, but if its a farm group or a serious group then ya you really need to watch one

my verdict on watching vids (STRICTLY MY OPINION)

4 person dungeons: no need just read a guide or ask for an explanation on bosses you don't know
trials/raids: no just no, watch a video atleast once and ask the party on anything you're not clear on

4 man - No need, mechanics are usually self explanatory, usually rehashed from previous content...
8 man - I suggest you do, better than going in blind and asking your team to type out a novel.
24 man - Just follow/afk do whatever you like, you will be fine.

I read guides because they're usually more thorough and easier to reference, bugger videos.
