So wondering when will SE will come up with another movie/tv anime series like Final Fantasy Ultimate (Kaze with Demon-Gun that summons Primals) ?
After The Spirits Within I don't think they're keen on doing movies any more. Though Advent Children seemed to do pretty well.
I seem to remember Final Fantasy Unlimited having pretty lukewarm reception as well? The anime industry is having a lot of problems right now so I don't think S-E is too keen on diving back into that market any time soon. But who knows.
I don't think they need to move back into passive mediums. They've always done their narratives pretty well within gaming, so artistically, they're not missing out, and it's hardly a profitable alternative to what they're currently doing with mmos and smartphones.
I'd rather we didn't suffer another decade of subpar products and questionable business decisions, just for them to right themselves. They're just getting back on their feet as it is.
Despite being a japanese company I have never seen them do anime of any of their video games. Nor have I seen them make a video game in anime style. I could be wrong though.
Unless it's a spinoff of one of the Final Fantasies, they're better off not doing any original FF anime if Final Fantasy Unlimited/ Spirits Within is an indicator.
It's a shame they don't go that route since their FF games are very popular and need fleshing out that anime shows can depict. FF7 Advent Children was pretty successful.
If Castlevania can get an anime adaptation, why not? They got a lot to work with really and if they REALLY wanna let go and have fun, just claim it as a Dissidia branch of Final Fantasy, free range of characters, place and times. I do hope they avoid another mistake like Spirits Within cus I found that boring to the point I honestly don't even remember what it was about haha.
Spirits Within wasn't bad, it just wasn't Final Fantasy. At best it was a decent film that could have used more polish and less trying to be part of the franchise. Anime has been kind of meh for a while with some gems here and there. The only Final Fantasy anime I ever saw was Legend of the Crystals. Woah-boy ; ; never got past the first tape. In some circles there existed a Dragon Quest anime of some form at some earlier mid point of the 90's (maybe). Given Square tried harder to be more than a game producer (with not that many original titles). Id like to see something in the future, if they can avoid repeating mistakes. Phantasy Star Online is rumored to have an anime in the works but. Apart from the Street fighter Alpha OVA's and recently watching most of Jojo. Most game based anime hasn't translated very well for some odd reason. (please don't mention .hack// , SAO rants will follow.) . Otherwise Advent Children was a very pleasant surprise.
Acually Ultimate series are better than Legend (almost finish watching it) but it's seems okay but WOULD love to see they do something like Log Horizon/SAO type
I feel sad about the fact that FF series never had a good official manga or anime. They should've try to hire some top tier manga-ka to make it, like Dragon Quest: Dai's Adventure.
Atelier Escha and Neptunia series also have good anime too.
I kinda wouldn't mind a movie/anime/manga/whatever about historical events and places mentioned in FFXIV, like the War of the Magi or some such. Especially civilisations from other Astral/Umbral eras that we don't know anything about. Like who were the big players in the Fourth Astral Era and how was the Fifth Umbral Era brought about? Or even earlier stuff, like the Third Umbral Era or Second Astral Era.
It took more that just VII's idea of the lifestream. It took elements from the franchise as a whole and tried to marry it all into a single narrative. That was it's biggest fault, I think. In trying to be a Final Fantasy movie it failed on understanding what made Final Fantasy... Final Fantasy.
Spirits Within is a half decent sci-fi flick if you take out the Final Fantasy name. But if you keep it in, it's an awful adaptation on Final Fantasy. (Though most give it credit of having animation ahead of its time of release) Ah, and I heard it almost made Square go bankrupt again, or at least make them lose a large amount of money.
I don't think Square wants to go through it again. Instead, they seem to go to other mediums. FF12 and Type-0 received manga adaptions and FFXIII had a bunch of novelizations and radio dramas.
I would kill to see a FFVI anime, done well of course,
Funny how no one mentioned the two FFVII single episode OVA's Last Order and On the Way to a Smile ~ Case of Denzel, although I can understand the lack of interest in the former - it's awful. :p
Case of Denzel however is actually pretty good - besides giving Denzel's backstory it was also notable for actually being very faithful to the events of FFVII itself, unlike Last Order which just played out like a bad fanfic. As well, it was quite poignant in that it showed how the events of the original FFVII game affected everyone else. As it was only a bonus with the bluray edition of Advent Children though a lot of fans probably missed it.
Whether SE ever decides to do another FF tie-in anime is anyone's guess though (hopes vainly for a FFXIV-tie-in anime featuring Derplander and his party during the events of 1.0 ;)).
Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals was good
They did this with the 2.0 Collector's Edition. They released a DVD with all of 1.0's story cutscenes with Derplander as the main character and his party of iconics when the cutscene included a party. The quality isn't great, which is weird given Crystal Tools is a cutscene engine.
It is because you watched the anime instead of playing the games.
Neptunia series is more about making fun of the Game stations and video game series. Each Avatar represents the three big game station being Xbox = vert, Playstation = Noire, Wii = Blanc.
Game series and Game companies are also given Avatars and each Avatar tend to represent the game series or game series made by the company. Often in way to make fun of the game series and game made by the game company.
For example, Tekken represent's Tekken game series with a masochist personality which represent how character who are stun locked in combos in the Tekken series get beat up a lot.
Square Enix does occasionally sponsor an anime (things like FMA: Brotherhood, for example) but I think they got burned trying to make Final Fantasy stuff, as everyone has already said.
But personally, I would watch the hell out of a FF6 anime. Since it's clear we're not getting a remake any time soon.
SE is also very interested in using DX12 and real time animation to considerably cut production costs of full motion CGI, which may be in preparation for cutscenes of XV but also future non-game media.
They really need to do something with FFVI. It was one of their most successful games and rates highly among fans as being one of the best games in the series. I don't understand why they won't give it a spin off or another game related to it like they did with FFIV, FFX or even FFXIII which among final fantasy fans was rated among the worst in the series. If any game deserves a spin off its FFVI.
FF15 is pretty much playing a movie based on its amazing graphics.
