Ok if I got this correct according to Yoshi this morning: PrePatch items (crab bow +3) cannot have materia applied to them? So you would have to get a post patch bow and apply materia, so those whom spent a lot of gil for items are screwed and crafters will continue to control the economy. Glad I didnt buy + gear in preparation for patch!

i just bought new gear for my player, boo me, ah well, i needed it and sure it will take a little while for the good materia gear to filter through, more upset at the fact all the gear i have is about to be devalued :(

Fun times, eh? I can see how it'd be upsetting but there's no point on blaming the crafters. The game has more crafting classes than DoW/M classes. Of course they're going to control a partial amount of the economy. Did you expect with so many you'd be able to control it yourself just by finding things?
What's the point, a lot of new gear is rare/ex. You wouldn't be able to sell it anyway.
Besides we just found this out today I believe? Or earlier this week?
I can't think of any reason for why this would be in the first place. Except that the new items might have new stats or ID number that makes it possible to attach materia while old items don't have this?

Yes, that basics are just like you imagined, the goal is to combine as much as possible but at which line (+3 and +2 being HQ others being NQ) will have to be decided by adjusted by looking at the item circulation rate from logs.
+3 > HQ
+2 to be determined based on circulation.
