I think hes over empathising a bit. I think only the MMO brand and maybe SE in general from MMO fans got damaged, but people who dont play MMOs wont care about XIV's current state and SE's main product of single player games will still sell and do very good I imagine.
lol well seeing how they are doing on FFXIII-2 it looks a LOT better than XIII was...
As surprising as this may sound, there are people who consider Final Fantasy XIII to be the best of the series.
I'm not one of those people though, I hated the Paradigm battle system...but other than that, it was just another Final Fantasy game to me. Nothing overly special, aside from pretty graphics.
Ditto. I also loved the original FFXIV...and still have hopes up that someday it will be relaunched as another game (maybe spin-off...maybe not even as FF...IDC much about the "new" name)...but complete this time...because there is a beef of market directed to casual players that is nearly unexplorated...casual players or play MMOs and live of HC leftovers or go play these facebook farm games (lol...there's also some casual flash MMOs...but this is not the case) or just go play games with multiplayer online instead of fully online games, like Wii games or the infamous pokémon (which IMO is the best turn-based startegy game serie right now...the pink, cute monsters are very misleading regarding the gameplay quality ^^).
EDIT: I am looking foward to FFXIII-2 too ^^ Hopefully we will jhave eidolons of other classic avatars, like Ifrit becoming a red truck with flames decal lol!
Well, i got much worse experiences like this...i remember when i got Golden Axe (Mega Drive)...20 minutes of playing and it was gone...i was like "WTF!"...finishing a game in the first try and lot lasting 1hr? I nearly got an urge for asking my money back! ><
Don't be dissing Golden Axe!!! :p Try Golden Axe: Beast Rider for 360/ps3, that lasts for quite a while and it's brutally hard in some areas XD
I quite liked DoC personally, though I felt at the end it left a few unanswered questions so it made me hope for a DoC II or FFVII-2, though the chance of either of those two happening is practically zero.
I liked XIII, except for the characters (besides Fang). They were typical Tetsuya Nomura fare. Really pretty, with complicated outfits and hairstyles, but overall dull and hollow. They market well, but there isn't much to them beyond that.
Compare that to a character like Prishe, or an even better example, Naja Salaheem from XI, who looks exactly like dozens of other Mithras, but give her a spiked club and a personality, and she's far more memorable than anyone you meet in FFXIII.
Well, i might be missing a few minutes...it was like what...around 20 years ago? Still, the feeling is valid....i i'm sure it didn't take 1hrs to finish =P And Streets of Rage > Golden Axe IMO. =P
2 Words: Mihli Aliapoh! Had 1 quest and 2~3 battle lines and still had people loving/hating her with passion!
Golden Axe can be finished in 20 minutes on Easy difficulty, 'cos easy mode only has about 3 levels, normal + hard mode had about 8. Old gameplay styles, they penalise the player for playing it too easily ;)
Streets Of Rage 3 had the same system, it only allowed you to go through about 4 levels on easy mode then stopped, normal + difficult went on for aaaaages. Still waiting on Sega to decide to be brave and make a Streets Of Rage 4, though I think they're holding on to it in case it takes the same road as Toejam & Earl 3 did.
Yay I flew wildly off-topic again! Personally I found XIII to be kind of like a superflash FF8 tbh, the characters all look funky, Lightning acts just like Squall, Sahz has the comedy personality like Zell, Vanille has a more care-free attitude like Selphie...
That being said it's not a bad game, but I do hope XIII-2 brings back more exploration and a classic FF world map, I miss hunting for secrets.
Only complaint i had regarding FFXIII was Vanille continuous moaning while in Medic role...she REALLY sounds like someone is f'ing her the entire fight.
Other than that, i liked FFXIII...probably due Eidolons...transformers are a personal obcession of mine =P But it indeed had poor character development, getting not even close to X- games.
But IMO it's all about taste...here people even say "Taste is like ass...everyone has their own."...i'm one of those who liked the original FFXIV proposal of a "light" MMO for casuals...specially since SE already had FFXI for hardcores.
Not much to comment on regarding this comment as it's not that much him stating his opinion of things but just stating facts about the current situation of the brand image.
For all of us it's at least somehow encouraging to know that they are aware of the fact that something has been done wrong. I hope they realize XIII is also part of the problem and not just XIV.
XIII did not sell well because it's a different kind of FF game with a marketing campaign the magnitude of which we've never seen for an FF title.

While I realize FFXIII had some problems (mainly lack of variety and linear level design), I really did enjoy it quite a bit. It's still one of my favorite games this gen. :3 It doesn't even begin to compete with my favorite though - FFIX. :D
Looks like XIII-2 is addressing all my complaints against XIII, so I'm very excited about that game. :)
You know what I'm glad FF XIV failed at launch. I think it's the kick up the arse Square Enix needed. This doesn't just affect XIV they will work harder on all FF games now.
On topic:
Wow this article is too funny. It's sad when the only way to save face is to outright bash the quality of the game at release and indirectly bash the person who was in charge of it all at the beginning. No more sugar coating things it seems. The clip of the Ifrit battle did look a little cheesy, but it also looked like a vast improvement from 1) attack marmot 2) marmot runs away 3) marmot glitches and you are unable to attack 4) marmot starts attacking you from glitched position til you are either dead or almost dead. :P
Luckily Versus XIII will be the best. game. ever. period.
I don't really understand why people are hyping up Versus to be like the second coming of Christ. It's only going to lead to disappointment when you find out the game isn't perfect and made of gold. :|
Note: I am interested in the game and I think the game will be great, but I haven't seen enough to say it'll be amazing. And I'm not just talking about people on these forums, but it seems like every forum I visit, it's the same thing - people saying Versus will be the "best game ever" and "best Final Fantasy ever" - I just don't know how they came to that conclusion based on the trailers/info I've seen. XD
I'm actually far more interested in XIII-2 than I am for Versus right now, but that's likely due to having so much information and great trailers being released for the game (and none for Versus).
I always thought XIII-2 and XIII Versus were the same thing, though I'd never bothered to look up information about it till just a minute ago. Interesting, making a new FF game based in the same universe but having nothing to do with XIII at all.
Since XIII Versus is only listed for PS3 though guess I'll be giving it a miss unless I decide to fork out money on a PS3 at some point. Bleh. Versus sounds a little much like Mass Effect with swords though, it won't feel too much like an FF game if they go by what I'm reading right now.
I want the old FF battle system back and a world map :(
FFX-2 , FF12, and FF13 ALL POOP! I atleast finished X-2 ..12 and 13 no thank you! All Crap! They need to get their magic back.
eh?
FFXII was fantastic... The only thing it needed was a decent job system and that was solved with the Intl Zodiac release.
Nomura fare? I like his stuff for KH, Parasite Eve, and TWEWY, but it's all played out for the FF series.
It's time they put Akihiko Yoshida on point and brought the FF franchise back to it's roots. (eg. FFIV, FFVI)
People seem to forget that Versus XIII is a spin off it doesn't play like a true FF game. Square also recently said it is a ""FF game like you have never seen." People expecting this to be a return to what FF used to be like may be disappointed. I also don't see why everyone is so crazy about a game they know nothing about.
FFXII had problems beyond the License Board, but it still felt like a Final Fantasy game.
FFXIII did not feel like Final Fantasy to me, but I'm not delusional enough to believe that it was a failure of a game. FFXIII sold very well globally, (critical reviews were a bit mixed, though) and that scares me because it leads me to believe that my views on what Final Fantasy is supposed to be like do not concur with SE's views anymore.
As far as FFXIV goes, Wada can recognize the problems all he wants, but he is part of the problem and his words are hollow.
Does anyone know what happened to that issue of Famitsu magazine that had the controversial bow/harp image? I am quite sure it was released on September 27th, and I believe it's getting close to the 28th there. I expected some new news in there, to be honest.
Not that I enjoy seeing all the negative publicity going around MMO websites today regarding the comments and mmorpg.com's one year look at FFXIV [of which, you can tell the author was looking for a fix by now - which means he failed to realize how significant the problems the game had at launch], but it's hilarious seeing people desperately posting pictures from the Ifrit video, or linking the Ifrit video itself to try and counter the negative press.
The Ifrit video will get its attention in time, it's a cool video and someone's going to want to see it, but would be awesome to see people stop running around with their heads cut off. -_-
I think if FFXIII had been released without the Final Fantasy trademark and name, it would have done much better, as people wouldn't have had any expectations from it other than 'it's a Square Enix game'.
In the future I think if they're going to experiment with different playstyles, they should make a stand-alone game using it first and see how it goes, if it does well, then incorporate it into one of their brand games.
I don't know what magazine this is but you can see the bow here.

The only things I would have changed about FFXII:
- The Last 20%: The story was intriguing , but it fell a bit flat at the end (I'll chalk this up to Yasumi Matsuno leaving)
- Vaan: He shouldn't have been in the game. It was an ensemble cast, but Vaan always seemed like a 5th wheel.
- Gambits: Should have automatically been disabled for main char. (no auto-play).
Things I would have changed:
Not used the FFXI battle system
Run it in a better resolution, no idea why XII has a lower resolution than X...
Replaced the main character with someone else, 'cos he was just... ugh.
Better sound quality, when people talk it sounds like they're speaking through a pipe
Have a progression system that didn't seem quite so.... dumb (I have to teach him how to wear a hat??!?!)
I wish I could find the picture my friend showed me a couple of years back, it was of Vaan holding a hat in his hand and going, "Now what do I do with this?", then he starts pulling it over his leg and goes, "Ah, hat go on foot!" XD
FFXIII is probably my favorite I've played so far. For the first time I actually felt engrossed in the game.
LOL, the license system was very goofy for low level gear. but it made sense for spells and abilities.
I agree on the resolution issue. The game was gorgeous, it's a shame that we couldn't see it more clearly. They must have really been pushing the PS2's graphics engine.
I'd be all over an HD re-release of it though.
