DX11 Crashing?

Anyone else have an issue with the DX11 client crashing? I did a brief glance at the topics and I didn't see anything.

I have an NVidia Geforce GTX 970 SSC, so I don't need a new video card.

I get no error code, just a flat out "FFXIV Has stopped Working" dialog window and everything crashes. I have had it happen at least half a dozen times. I switched to DX9 last night and ran several hours with no crash. I run borderless windowed mode. Kind of sucks, I was enjoying the new graphics.

I've had this happen occasionally. Usually it happens when I log out and try to exit the game, but I did get one crash mid-gameplay while flying in Western Highlands. Might be they still have a few bugs to fix.

driver version you are running. And do you have chrome running at the same time if so turn off hardware acceleration in chrome settings.

Pretty much every time I quit the game it crashes to a black screen.

I have this all the time,gtx 970. Whenever i try to enter an instance crash to desktop, zone into ishgard from 2.0 area bang crash to desktop. I gave up and just went back to directx 9 and havent had a crash since. Seems to be a problem mainly with 900 series cards and directx 11, there is a few people talking about it in the technical forums but not any word yet from SE about it.

This is the only time I crash with a GTX Titan X on DX11 client Windows 8.1. Workaround: Never stop playing.

I have crashed to desktop once with GTX 980 latest drivers. I was trying to teleport somewhere and it crashed. Unfortunately I'm on Balmung so after that crash I was screwed, had to quit for the night.

It seems like a common nvidia driver issue primarily with dx11 platforms... are you getting a "TDR" error message from the windows platform as well?

I'm really starting to wonder if its actually the server causing the client to crash. I'm going to be running fully DX9 the next few days to see if i still get crashes when opening various UI elements such as PF, DF. Or when I'm loading into dungeons. It's very demoralizing when you spent a hour attempting to login, and then you go to do a duty and crash, and have to start all over again. I'm using a AMD Radeon R290x GFX. Also I'll notice when I do crash, and try to log back in, it will say theres like 900+ people in queue, so its almost like part of the server crashed, and dumped people.

My DX11 crashes very randomly. Flying in a zone, walking, in town, in a dungeon ect. Doesn't really matter what im doing.

I could be running the game for 5 minutes and crash or running for 5 hours then crash. Install the latest Nvidia drivers for my 970 the other day, and it didnt make a difference.

I also have a GTX 970 and have been crashing in DX11. I was excited to try it out in DX11 as soon as early access was available, but within several hours of playing, my screen went totally black but the sound continued - nothing could recover my display, no matter what I tried - I couldn't alt/tab to another window, I couldn't ctrl/alt/del to bring up the task manager to close FFXIV, nothing was responsive. Ultimately I had to do a hard shutdown to fix it. After that I tried launching in DX11 again, but this time after a shorter window of time, the program errored out and closed on its own (at least it didn't lock my whole system this time).

I was running it on the most current drivers at the time - so I think that was 353.06 (a new driver has since come out which I just applied this morning but have not tried playing with yet - 353.30). I’m on Windows 8.1.

Dropping the client back down to DX9 has resulted in a stable experience again, so I'm pretty sure it's not my hardware (i.e., I'm pretty sure it's a driver issue).

Would sure be nice if there was a fix for this though :-( I want to enjoy the graphics at the highest level that my machine is capable of presenting - having just built my machine a few months ago, it should be no problem for the hardware to handle the requirements, but when the drivers won't play nice, well...

Using GTX 960 and I have experienced two crashes so far. The game would just suddenly freeze and only a hard reset will work.

I'm using Windows 10 and a beta driver so that might have been the cause.

I have an EVGA Nvidia 960 and when running DirectX 11 and closing the game, it never closes properly, stays in a black screen and I have to go to the task manager to force close the game. I get the "The program stopped working" notice.
Drivers are all updated, and I have no problems while I play, but I've been only able to close the game properly once. I'm on Windows 7 btw.

I wonder if it's really an Nvidia graphic cards thing, or something with the client itself.

Just to add, same here on both desktop ( 2x - GTX 760 FTW) and my laptop (GTX 980m). Since using DX11, I'll crash randomly and/or while in dungeons.......

I haven't had any crashes mid-game yet. That thing where the game "has stopped working" when I quit though, it's been doing that to me since well before the DX11 client hit.

I've only crashed a couple times when taking random screenshots.

It's not just Nvidia, i have an AMD 290x and just when i exit the game it goes to a black screen, but only in this time, not when i'm playing.

This is similar to what I have had happen. This has happened twice that I can remember, but I was always able to get out of the game. I have the most up to date drivers as of last night, although somebody mentioned new ones came out today.

I will give this a try as well. I do usually have Chrome Open

I just switched back to DX9 because I always get that black screen when exiting DX11 client. The updated graphics ain't worth that bs.

This particular issue looks more like the GFX card itself crashing, or the video driver crashing. I wonder what kind of heat its putting out, do you have a temp monitor on that thing. It would be nice to know what its sitting at while in the game. I know sometimes if a game crashed my video driver, esp at full screen, sometimes I have to do a CTRL+ALT+DEL which depending on your situation, sometimes lets you get out of the mess. If the driver is completely crashed though that wont do anything. But sometimes when you hit that, it comes up with the windows options, and you hit ESC, and then have the option to shutdown the game, or at least SEE something. Anyways that is a totally separate issue to the random crashes in the game. When we say crash's we are referring to the FFXIV has encountered a error type messages, spontaneously.

There is an Nvidia app to monitor the temp. If it reaches a specific temp, it reboots the computer. I've had it overheat when I attempted to play and do video editing. The PC just rebooted (I don't do this anymore). When I play I usually manually turn the fan on to make sure it stays cool. It typically runs anywhere between 50-60 degrees Celsius.

I don't know that it's the driver. Usually when my graphics driver crashes, I get a BSOD

Well a lot of times GFX manufacturers put a fail-safe into the driver to keep it from completely bottoming out. This results in the driver resetting, and sometimes it'll recover, causing a game to hang in this manner. Forcing you to do fun things to recover, without a full reboot. Or sometimes the failsafe function fails, and you get situations where it never comes back, and you still have audio. This function is suppose to keep it from rebooting completely due to heat. And it works because when it resets, most games will crash in the process, and keep it from overheating yet again.

Yep, back in 2.0 I built a new PC with not enough cooling, and on a couple occasions 14 would freeze, then stutter, give me an error message (nvidia would), and then I'd continue to play 14 but with lesser graphics. However, this is definitely not the same case for these drivers. My friend has the original Titan and he's having the same issues. His temps never hit above 60c, and everything else is fine. Even lowering his Graphics from Max to High still caused crashes, dx9 fixed the problem. Right now I firmly believe dx11 isn't implemented properly and there'll be future fixes (hopefully by nvidia themselves) that'll cure the issue.

I don't have a temp monitor on it, but I did do a quick "feel" around that area of the computer when it happened and nothing seemed even warm to the touch, so I'd have a hard time believing it was overheating if nothing around it had absorbed any noticeable heat that I could feel. I've also never had this happen in any other application or game before.

But like I said in my earlier post, this was the first "crash" that I had with DX11 - the next one (after I did a hard shutdown/restart once I got the black screen error) was one of the "FFXIV has encountered an error and needs to close" ones. After that, I figured DX11 just isn't worth the trouble and went back to DX9. No issues at all since then, runs for hours on end without errors as it did before. It's passable that way, I just wish I could get it to be stable enough to run in DX11.

I can report that on my 970 and 980 Ti, I was getting CTDs (Crash to Desktop) in DX11 mode on both the Heavensward Benchmark and the game client. It does something horrifying to the Nvidia drivers too, like it actually murderizes the HDMI audio device and Windows 7 goes crazy and a new device appears in the Audio Settings of Windows and the old one is still there but doesn't work anymore and all sound goes through the new one.

You might want to roll back drivers to version 350.xx

352.xx and 353.xx drivers have been very problematic for various users.

You might want to use the Display Driver Uninstaller from https://forums.geforce.com/default/t...d-06-17-2015-/ before installing the 350.xx series of drivers if you want to try older drivers.

980Ti users can't do that with official drivers though as the 350.xx series don't support it officially.

Does your Bios support it? Go look up your motherboard and see if it has a Bios update for higher versions of direct x.

I had to do this a long time ago.

I never had a crash using the old client. Since the expansion I've been using the DX11 client and I usually get one crash a day, plus one usually whenever exiting the game.

I haven't done enough stress testing, but changing the game client to run in Full Screen is helping me. I haven't seen a crash for three hours since I changed it, and I was getting CTD every hour or so on Boarderless Window.
Running on a Radeon 285 with latest beta drivers.

Should we report this on the bug forums? I've searched but found nothing there; maybe a mod could move the thread.
I find it curious because according to others it's not exclusive to Nvidia graphic cards.

I don't know off the top of my head. I would have to see what version I am on and do some research. I do know, that I haven't updated my BIOS is a good amount of time. I have the ASUS Hero VI.

dunno if it is the same but everytime I zone everything will freeze for like 20 seconds then start loading again and let me through to the next zone.. This last time (and hence my reason for coming to General Discussion thread) it finally froze completely and I had to force log off completely to get out of it.. Dunno whats going on.. I had no problems at all before this morning

I don't experience any crashes during play, but I could do without the "FINAL FANTASY XIV has stopped working" every time I log out.

Played all night no crashing with DX9, but this is one day, so we'll have to wait and see. I'll report back after the weekend.

Mine does this pretty regularly. DX9 or 11.

Last night I updated my video drivers, did not run anything but FFXIV in DX11 when online. Crashed while in N. Shroud looking at DRK skills in the menu.

Switched to full screen mode and ran in DX11 the rest of the evening with no issues, but I was only on for about 1.5 hrs. When I did a /shutdown, however, it faded to black and just sat there for several minutes. I had to CTRL+ALT+DEL and try to close it with task manager. Doing so crashed the client.

I will run in FS mode tonight to see if it helps again.

I ran last night for about two hours in full screen mode with no issues. Seems that we have narrowed down that this could be related to running in windowed mode. Anyone else give this a test? I plan on testing more this weekend. I will report my findings. Neither my wife nor I have issues running DX9 in windowed mode.

I have an ATI radeon 7850 card and I'm running DX11 and the game crashes at random times for me...most times when zoning into 3.0 areas but also a few times in ARR areas as well...I also run the game in windowed mode...will change it and see if it helps.
