Job Suggestion: Thief

Hey everyone, so it's been a while since I made a suggestion for future class/job concepts. So for what it is worth, here is my job suggestion.

The idea behind this job was to provide a melee DPS class that could bring more than just damage. As a tradeoff for doing high damage, Thief brings utility to help the rest of the party such as boosting their attack speed or weakening the enemy. Ideally/If possible, the thief would only use one dagger (same weapons that Rogue uses, but only one appears).

Thief also introduces a new mechanic where they can steal gil and stockpile it to use it for other abilities (note: The gil stolen cannot be pocketed).

Thief
Main class: Rogue
Secondary class: Archer
Tertiary class: Pugilist


Job Skills

30 - Steal (steals 20 gil from an enemy. Total Cap at 100. Secondary effect: Can become Mug which doubles the damage dealt and steals up to 40 gil)

35 - Gil Explosion (Does damage based on total amount of gil stolen)

40 - Fortune (Debuffs an enemy or buffs an ally. Next steal becomes a Mug which does double damage and steals up to 40 gil)

45 - Fade (reduces hate, chance to activate Mug)

50 - Haste (AOE buff that lasts 5 seconds. Increases attack/spell speed. Reduces your damage during this 5 seconds.)

52 - Plunder (Maxes temp-gil to 100)

54 - Vanish (Temporarily removes all enmity, movement speed is increased by 15%, next ability will be a critical strike. Lasts 10 seconds. Enmity is regained after Vanish effect ends. Next ability will not incur extra enmity)

56 - Death Blossom II (Delivers an attack that puts a DoT bleed debuff on nearby enemies).

58 - Gil Toss (Throws all the gil that has been collected, deals extra damage based on how much gil is thrown. Secondary effect: Resets Steal's cooldown. Next Steal becomes a Mug)

60 - Illusion (Creates a mirror image of yourself which can be controlled up to 10 seconds. Only auto-attacks. Attacks at a high speed and does more damage per auto-attack. Activates Mug).

The descriptions I've provided are to give a general idea around the abilities. This may be problematic (I'm writing this around 1am) so I'll make some adjustments to clarify anything when I wake up.

Boring half-ninja stealing gil from tough monster bosses that would have no gil to begin with, sounds lame and more unrealistic than most job ideas honestly.

I would prefer a more defined job, such as redmage, chemist or something. Ninja is your thief in this game IMO.

You've been able to do similar things in Final Fantasy games since the beginning. Thief has been a fairly iconic job in Final Fantasy, so it would be great to see it included one form or another (perhaps filling the role of a dodge tank, as Ninja did in FFXI).

Technically, if you watched the live letters back in the day rogue = thief. They just didn't want to name it that.

While the idea sounds nice, I doubt it would work. A Theif just wouldn't fit I a game like this. Most of the time Ninja is an upgrade to Thief, or they are just merged together.

I had some time so I compiled this list, lol?

Games where Ninja is an upgrade for Thief
Final Fantasy I
Final Fantasy V (Because the abilities can be customized)
Final Fantasy XI (Though it was optional, the common thing to do was sub Ninja onto Thief to aid them with the skill base they already had, similar to XIV now)
Final Fantasy XIV
Final Fantasy Dimensions (Both jobs have their usage, but because of customization, Ninja will be used more than Thief; though it should be noted that only half of the playable cast gets Ninja)

Games where they are seperate but equally viable
Final Fantasy III (mostly because the abilities couldn't be customized)
Final Fantasy VI (Locke and Shadow both have value to the party because of customization)
Final Fantasy XI (Because this game had no gathering/crafting classes Thiefs provided the additional out of combat skills to aid in those kinds of tasks)
Final Fantasy Tactics [every game] (Thiefs and Ninja each have different usage, though it should be noted, Ninja is unlock by using Thief)
Bravely Default (Each job has its purpose and each one can use the others moves.

Games that have only one, usually combining them
Final Fantasy IV (Edge is a Ninja but has Thief skills)
Final Fantasy VII (Yuffie is classified as a Ninja, but is played as a Thief, though because of customization anyone can be a "Thief")
Final Fantasy IX (Zidane is a Thief, and while technically a Monk, Amarant has some classic Ninja/Samurai moves)
Final Fantasy X (Rikku is the only Thief, though anyone can learn Steal, Mug, and Use, she is the only one who can steal from machines to kill them)
Final Fantasy X-2 (There is no Ninja Dressphere only a Thief)
Final Fantasy XII: IZJS (The Shikari job mimics a Ninja)
Final Fantasy XII: RW (The Ninja is a class available only to Sky Pirates, ie this games Thieves; though it should be noted they aremonlymclassified as thieves, its not the Job they hold in battle.)

I know most people see Rogue as 'Thief' but it isn't really? I mean they're more similar than any other class, but I think there is still the opportunity for Thief to bring new mechanics. I could even see Thief as a job with both tank and dps options (just not with the skills I've posted :P).

Yes please! i would like to play a true Thief job, not what we have now. Even tho, the skills you listed are far from a Thief job mechanics where i see them using the steal skills to buff yourself and debuff enemy. Like:

Steal speed: 15% attack speed bonus duration 25 sec
Steal tp: recover 20% of tp
etc

Asked in live letter thread if they will consider to make a thief job if mudra lag issue wont be fixable. If you would like to know the answer too, go there and like my post. To be honest, even with eu datacenter located in Europe, there will still be people having trouble with mudras and that cant enjoy that kind of job. Hopefully they will understand it and give another option to play the Rogue archetype

But ROG is THF - SE confirmed this right from the start (it's even mentioned in game by Jacke that the ROGs were originally called thieves), and the reason for the different name is they felt the idea of the Warrior of Light, Hydaelyn's champion and a beacon of righteousness just doesn't 'gel' with the whole concept of a thief (hence ROG's lore as being more like secret agents keeping Limsa's pirate element in check from the shadows).

This is what SE has stated, THF=ROG is canon and it pretty much says a 'traditional' named THF will never be added I'm afraid.

It's just stupid to not do a THF job (an iconic job) for that reason, considering it would be a branching job and so requiring less effort for devs to work on it. There are tons of players that want to play THF job, are disappointed with the decision was made for rogue and the mudra system; because yeah, another job branching from rogue will give an option to truly enjoy the archetype for those who cant really right now for the mudra system. And no, its not gonna be fixed, because they already did that if possible.

I've taken a better look at Rogue/Ninja, and they've definitely merged Thief with Ninja, so it's difficult to justify a second a job for Rogue that is another melee DPS that provides certain support skills. Enkidoh, My main intention with my suggestion posts is to have a discussion, rather than an argument as to whether or not it would ever happen (because I'm not confident that SE is going to listen to job/class suggestions on their forums anyway :P).

However, I could totally see a tank job branching from Rogue that revolves around evasion, speed, threat management, and damage mitigation.


(Ninja will never be Thief in my heart </3 ... although I might just really want a green bandana... haha)

I'm playing FFV now and Thief is definitely not related to Ninja. They are both separate classes with separate abilities - they both have their own perks of levelling and do not have much in common.

For me its fine to open a constructive discussion about it. Other than my favorite job, i see Thief as a solution for people who cant play well because of mudra system. I'm pretty sure im not the only one who think that. I'm curious to hear others thoughts here about it
