Wow their testing 8 now? Tell us if it's compatible or not, ok?
Installed it, runs just as well as on win 7 :)
edit: actually im getting a slightly higher fps than i was in 7
Windows 8? They only released 7 not long ago, I thought they'd have stuck with an OS that worked fine for at least a little while before repeat the XP - Vista mistake :p
thanks for telling me about 8 Rex.
Haven't tried XIV yet. I'm liking some things, hating many others.
Seems like it's slightly faster under the hood but all-in-all it just seems like another step they've added to setup when reinstalling the OS.
>Install utilities (anti virus, ccleaner, anti malware etc)
>Install essentials (flash, browser of choice, pdf reader, codecs, media reading and editing software etc)
>Disable UAC
>[NEW] Disable Metro Theme/Re-enable old start menu.
As I don't have a touch monitor and I'm not on a tablet, I really can't appreciate the new slide start screen with boxes everywhere with "apps." Also the slide down to unlock PC/login with MSN account credentials thing aggravates me. How about I just create a user name/password?
Also the new centered window titles really bother me and I was expecting tabbed explorer and was sorely disappointed. As it stands I have no real huge motivation to upgrade from 7 x64 other than not having to pay for it when my older brother mails me company copies at launch.
Why can't there be an option "I'm not on a tablet/ppc/phone/micro PC/misc touch device/I'm not over the age of 65 or an idiot, please don't enable this phone/casual UI." Ugh.
These are all just my opinions though, I'm sure many others love the new OS.
Microscrub being greedy as usual in 2 years no more vista or windows 7 support...................not that support can help vista people that bought it shoulda recieved a free windows 7 when it was released.
Don't do it! every other windows release has had atrocious reviews. Windows 8 has been no different so far. It's designed for tablets, not desktop machines.
I thought they lociked old threads to prevent resurection of year old threads... Megahertz? oi. I wouldn't upgrade to 8 for a "performance boost". Windows8 is on rleease preview now, but still a lot of hardware doesn't have drivers available yet. Also it's not all that stable either. If you want performance, wait for 2.0 as they're migrating to a new engine that is more optimized.
Megahertz makes minimal difference. A quad core low voltage cpu running at 1.6-1.8ghz can often outperform a first gen quad core @ 3.2ghz. 1ghz = 1000mhz if you were unaware.
hopefully this one gets locked quickly, so some unassuming bastard doesn't install windows 8 on their gaming pc thinking it's a good idea.
It works just fine on desktops. I have it on 2 laptops to test stuff. The noticeable difference is metro which replaces the start menu. If you use pinned icons andshortcuts you would not really notice a difference. Hit the start menu and bam, full screen tiles with apps and widgets. Weather, pictures, photo feed, pretty much what you would have on your phone for information at your fingertips.

it has mouse features and a higher FPS limit on games. all games on Win 7 work on Metro Win 8 though
I'm tired of hearing this crap. Look beyond the UI and there's alot of internal improvements to the OS. hell the UI took me only 5 hours to become familiar with it.
and before you bash vista, it was lazy OEMS cutting corners with drivers/software & using way below reccomended memory installations. I remember OEMS making "Vista Ready" PCs with only 512MB memory, the bare minimal for vista for the first year.
As for game performance it's on par to Win7 in reguards to FF14. I'm currently on the final RTM build.
I dislike Windows 8 because it broke (not supported) a fair bit of programs I use, but games are fine.
-1 point for kotaku.
-1 point for hardcore gamers
-10 points for no neowin.
D:
I've been feeling lazy this development cycle, so I have not installed it myself. As such, I only have screenshots and a few press releases to go on, but it looks like they have removed the single largest step forward in User Interactivity that Windows 7 made. Namely the Start Menu Search. Seriously, I use that thing for everything - forgot what folder a file is in, type the name; don't want to dig down to a game buried deep in a folder, search for it. Unless there is some analog I haven't seen in screenshots, I'm afraid I'm too set in my ways to change my organization just to accommodate them taking out a perfectly useful function.
i dont believe this FREE WINDOWS 8 with product key?????

Yep. That's a huge pet peeve of mine too. I use the hell out of that search. Performance gains aren't there, it's not designed for desktops (whether it works for them is besides the point) and they've removed usability features such as the aforementioned start menu search (along with the start menu itself). Forget about it, I'm not installing it just because 7 < 8.
The start menu search is there. There's just no obvious field for it..
Press the windows key to bring up start and begin typing, the search results show immediately and then divided by files, applications, and system settings.
For Example:
I type "Fantasy Fantasy" at the start menu. The first default field is the applications, which will show Final Fantasy XIV immediately. Then if i were to hit the down key or click on the "Files" tab it will show all of the Final Fantasy audio tracks/folders.
Your article links are also flawed.
2 of them being the same story about Gabe not liking the new store commissions.
The other is somewhat legit. the start menu can become clumbersome with when installing alot of games, but this is remedied by simply typing the title of the game you wish to play.
The comment on it harder for OC'd CPUs alot not a big deal. If it's not stable in Win8, guess what, it's not stable on Win7 either.

I've been testing windows 8 on laptops, tablets, and touchscreen devices for the past year. Click the desktop tile and it's the same look and feel. It works fairly well. DP was pretty bad compared to CP and RP. However they run pretty damned well these days. Metro takes some getting used to but i seldom use it, so it's not a big deal to me.
Also I glanced at the kotaku article. Their complaint means it's bad for game developers because they have to code more. not bad for gamers themselves.
Maybe you should try it yourself. or don't. I don't care. But posting an opinion of something without trying it is kind of douchy.
Hmm, in that case, I shall perhaps have to try it at some point. I'm not afraid to try new things just because most people don't like them (though I'll admit I never did upgrade to Vista). It's just that I do not like to take steps backwards, hence my previous post. That being said, I just finally got my computer running just the way I like it; I'm hesitant to tear it all down and start from scratch with a new OS. I suppose I could set up a new partition, but I'm running out of space... Could buy a new harddrive... /em walks off mumbling to himself.
You can download the final build right now and try it for 90 days.

Tbh, the biggest problem with windows 8 is that for desktop users, it's an update for the sake of an update. There is nothing wrong with windows 7. It's not like going from Vista to 7. At least vista tried to make some improvements over XP, it failed, but at least it tried. To get the most out of 8 on a desktop, you have to side step the new features to get functionality similar to 7. To what end?
Obviously that's not the case on a tablet, I'm actually all for it on a tablet. I'll be buying the Surface just as soon as I can get my hands on one.

So yeah... Plus the latest NVIDIA drivers make your card DirectX 11.1 compatible. At least that's what my information tab on the NVIDIA driver settings tells me. I have GeForce 555M GT with 3GB of RAM.
that's not quite right tbh. Yes, there is nothing wrong about win7, and personally, I'm going to stick with it till the end despite having a free key from msdnaa.
There are however multiple improvements win8 brings to the "legacy" UI, like the new task manager, rewritten network stack, new file transfers and for some, the new explorer. Oh and about 10 sec faster boot.
For me however, it doesn't outweigh the inconsistency between metro and aero. Ever tried having your taskbar other than in the default position? It's really ridiculous how you sometimes click on an icon on the left of the screen to see the metro panel open on the right.
They should have made metro run inside aero, not vice versa.
I've been using Windows 8 since the consumer preview and I have to say that I hate it.
I installed the RTM over a month ago (got it from MSDN) and I still hate it.
Let me count the issues:
-- two versions of IE
-- jarring switch between desktop and metro
-- fullscreen ONLY metro apps
-- start screen full of garbage after installing apps
-- unintuitive menus
-- longer mouse movements and more clicks to accomplish most tasks (such as shutdown or control panel)
-- touch UI doesn't work for mouse/keyboard
-- additional security features that will drive you crazy. try linking to an office 365 account. It will try and take over your PC
-- no way to exit metro apps
-- removed media center / media player - have to pay extra to put it back in
-- Microsoft requires OEMs to use UEFI/Secureboot
I tried to get used to it for months - usually with new OSs, I come to tolerate or like it after I force myself to use it for weeks on end. But not Windows 8. The more I use it, the more I find to dislike about it. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone for desktop/laptop use. But I'm sure it would be wonderful on a tablet or phone.
You also clearly never used any version of Windows before Win98. Win 3.x was good for one thing. Playing Solitare. Cuz that's all people could figure out what to do. People stuck with DOS until Win95 was released. Win95 was the product that finally could actually compete with Apple's MacOS.
Win95 changed PCs like Final Fantasy 7 changed console RPGs.
This is off topic, but people who bash these things are also the people whom never used it or learned anything about it. Windows 7, for example, is Vista SP1 with a tweaked taskbar and other goodies. Vista was a major step forward. Windows 8 is also a leap in the right direction. Metro works very well with a track pad or touch sensitive mouse. And it puts everything the users wants right where it's easy to find on the start screen. I dunno why I'm trying to explain this. Everyone seems to have their mind made up already.
It's an easy formula!
1 good Wildows followed by 1 bad one. Here's the example (ignoring the server line like NT and win2k)
Win 3.11 -> good
Win 95 -> bad
Win 98 (SE aka second try) -> good
Win ME -> wtf microsoft srsly?
Win XP -> good (at least after SP1)
Vista -> bad
7 -> good
8 -> i will give it a try but got a bad feeling about it
9 -> yaaaay?
Not being a Microsoft insider, I can only speculate. But I have come to the conclusion that Microsoft releases on a Tick-Tock release schedule similar to Intel's (for those not familiar). But instead of Die-shrink->Architecture, Microsoft does Innovation->Refinement.
The only problem is they really don't seem to be able to innovate without completely botching the thing up.
Windows 8 is more for touch screens. Not really mouse/keyboard friendly. I will stick with Windows 7 since I have had no problems with. I rather have a desktop with my icons and a start menu. Windows 8 is gonna be another crappy version like Windows Me and Windows Vista was, so please don't waste your money on.
PS, They need to get rid of Steve Ballmer, he is driving Microsoft into the ground.
