I'd like to hear peoples opinions on this. I've had a few discussions in game with friends and some are for, some are against.
Personally I'm not much of a fan. "/tell Charles whatthehellstupidlongname" is wearing thin.

NO!
I like being Konata Chibi and Ren Koneko. Remove surnames and you limit the names people can be. I'd probably lose my name if someone of a higher level was using it too but with a different surname, and I'd be annoyed by that because I always have this is a first name in video games.
If you could just click the name of the person in the chat box to get a little window with options like /tell, /invite, /mute etc. and select one of those you wouldn't need to type that persons name in. That would be a much faster and more convenient system to use without having to remove something other players like.
(It's basically the system warcraft uses for it's chat window)
Yea this was part of my discussion. Even with the removal of surnames you will still get people that'll choose stupidly convoluted names.
Even so, I doubt Konata is that common. ^^
I've personally never met another Kamara. Even on other servers - though some were close.
We already have a pop-up window on our chat box now, i don't see why when someone sends us a /tell we can't just click then box and have a /reply option that would automatically set you to sending a /tell to the last person that sent one to you.
Maybe if you could customise that option to store a certain amount of /tell [insert name] in it so you could select one of them quickly and easily without having to type /tell [insert name] everytime you log on. That'd be more conveniant.
No way to completely remove surnames. Not gonna happen. But they could make the auto-complete a bit more intelligent when using it for tell.
Can we just get rid of pants instead...
Mostly wanted to post about this due to seeing the "text resizing" screen shot where "Foxclon" is shown talking with no surname. I wouldn't mind the option to turn them off. But obviously its too complicated.
For anyone who wants to get rid of surnames, if we lose them... I will find you.
The sole purpose of surnames in MMO's anyways is to allow people to have the first name they want without worrying about someone taking it, as they simply just need to use a different surname, which I feel is less important, since people tend to relate to your character using it's first name.
At the same time perhaps they could just allow you to have a choice whether to give your character a surname or not.
also some reference names lose their awesomeness with a lack of surname. For instance, I saw someone with a character named Rebecca Miyamoto, a clever choice of name as it's the main character of an anime called Pani Poni Dash that was published by Square Enix. without a surname, she just becomes Rebecca, and the joke is lost.
Well, there is only a little reading required if say, the surname wasn't there, she would just spell itoutlikethisno?
As people generally tend to do that anyway, with or without a surname.
No, no, and no. First of all they'd have to force multiple people to change their names, and I doubt anyone wants to do that. And I love my last name.
I'm 100% against removal of surname. I like my surname and while I don't care much about making them optional in the future, removing them would just cause too much trouble since a lot of people are already using the same first name.
Every once in a while someone feels the necessity to open a thread to remove surnames for some reason.
Not gonna happen.
After a while playing, I found surnames have always cluttered the screen, especially when coming across someone with an obnoxiously complicated name. (And, though I have seen some funny ones..) They give the game a much more informal feel - Something I'm not really looking for when relaxing in my time off. I've never really seen the need for them, mostly because people got around this years ago by simply getting rid of the space between a full name.
Having the option to show 1st/last only or both would be nice.
Or maybe even have it so you can display a nickname but when using chat you see the real name?
As for dropping them.. Na that's a really bad idea.
TBF some of the names are bad enough now without people having cloudbigswordssssss and such showing up.
Yes but in long names like Shikitakanashi, for instance, it would be more annoying to type than before and possibly exceed the maximum characters a single name would be allowed, plus since you aren't normally allowed to have capital letters in the middle of the name you wouldn't be able to differentiate where the first name ended and the surname began. And even if it did let that many letters in a single named, having it bunched up like that looks more cluttered than having it seperated as it is now.
Lol, for a moment I thought this was a necro'd thread.
Anyways, removing of the surnames was discussed there and many were against it if I remember right.
Forgive me my lazyness to not go through all the posts that were posted in that old thread...
I'm against removing of surnames.
It was already hard for me to come up a surname for my chara, because I've been playing
games that don't require one, and I'd be very angry if I'd lost it.
And I wouldn't want to create a new chara called CelethienMoonheart or something like that just so I could have a surname.
Also surnames help add to a characters customisation.
We have enough threads with people screaming about immersion without adding fuel to the fire by removing another part of their precious 'immersion'.
Of course your logic is sound. lol. I'm thinking an exodus of surnames would mean a general simplification in the naming of peoples character's.
After all why would you need to name your character "Shikitakanashi" if you're looking to talk with people?
(I agree with the fact they need to add some sort of intuitive way of speaking to people quickly... this is the main issue, immersion is my personal one)
lol. Aside from the fact that a quick /tell to someone is made more complicated by cultural, media, personal choices.
Surenames generally don't need to be there for those that don't "require" them. =)
(trying to stay on topic :P)
does no one us ctrl r?
It depends on how you define 'require'. If you mean 'require' as in "I don't need one because Im only interested in level grinding and end-game content with no interest in the story or scope of Eorzea" then no you don't need one.
As I said earlier though, I wouldn't see any harm in having it so you didn't need a surname when creating a character.
You do realise of course that if this change were implimented, you'd have to re-roll all over again :P
Y'know the first names that'd be taken almost immediately would be omgroflmao and pwnedunoob.
This is why I won't support the removal of surnames, it promotes 'WoW elitist' names, which tend to not work or look right when a name must be given with a space inbetween.
Next thing you know you'll be seeing Ihuntu and killudk
i am... not for this.... it would be nice if you could right click over a name to send tell tho like in some other games
EDIT: Also invite to party, linkshell, trade, etc etc etc
Exactly, thats my point =). I don't need, and have never seen a surname as any sort of immersion. For those that 'require' it, I have no problem with that.
And I was kind of hoping this could get thrown in with the PS3 lauch and the new genders we can 1 time change to.
