Did Anyone Notice the Background Noise in...

...crowded areas, such as the inn or a place like Mor Dhona? If you listen to the background, you hear various vocal sounds in sequence.

Why do some of them sound like people dying? Could it just be people getting drunk and retching, or is there some darker meaning behind it?

Especially in Mother Miounne's inn: I can hear a Lalafell dying every 20 - 30 seconds :eek:

Yeah, I've noticed. And I think there are 2 different tracks of noise depending on how crowded the area is. When there are many many people (like hunts) it sounds like an agitated crowd. I don't think I've heard a lala dying though o_O

It's called "Ambient Sounds". I have it turned off because it drives me crazy.

Yeah, there are ambient sounds mostly everywhere. Kikoten is talking specifically about how the ambient noise changes to a different track when there are many players and/or npcs nearby.

The sound effect works well when the crowd of players is in combat (like gathered for an hunt or popular FATE), not so much when they're all just shopping at a market.

I wish we could turn off the crowd noise and still leave nature (rain/animals/ocean sounds) ambient noise on

I wish they would remove the occasional absurd screams from the crowd tracks though.

Definitely a guy in Mor Dhona who yells "get out of here".

Also various orgasm sounds.

I hear cheering and stuff now and then.
Never anyone dying.

I know there's at least two tracks that play, and one of them does seem to have more of an angry mob sound to it. I noticed it in Mor Dhona a while back and after a few minutes of idling there I could hear it switch back and forth between the two tracks.

The Female Miqo'te laughing drives me insane, I always have to click those noises off when I enter Mor Dhona

I hate that the crowd noises are linked to nature ambient sound, and that the crowds are so loud compared to nature. Yes, I get it, crowds are louder than winds, water, birdsong and mills, but if I put the setting to a tolerable level for crowds (very low), I don't get to hear the nature sounds, which I like (so often I either mute or actively avoid crowded areas).

That it loops so obviously is another annoyance (is it just me, or is the Miqo'te cheer even louder than the rest of the crowd noise?).

Most likely you were stood near where the escort fate pops. The voices become more "preparing for battle" when he appears, if you're close to him.
