Bringing Back the Secondary Charge-Up Meter

Those who played this game in the beginning (esp ALPHA and BETA) will remember the Secondary Charge-Up Meter that worked in conjunction with the stamina bar.

It was a part of combat that required extra clicking, it slowed the pace of battle down to a crawl and made the whole system seem sluggish. Not only that, but its functions were never fully (or at least clearly) explained in the game. Due to player complaints, they removed it, and rightfully so.

But that was then...

With the advent of Auto-attack, battle runs at a good pace. We can now chat with people while in combat and the amount of clicking we do is greatly diminished. So much so, that it might be a good time to reintroduce a revamped secondary meter for special attacks like TP moves.

The inclusion of a secondary meter for special attacks could open up all sorts of nifty options during battle customized for each attack.

For example:

• Skull Sunder: Accuracy >>> Effect Duration
• Red Lotus: Physical Damage% >>> %Elemental Damage%
• Damnation: Damage >>> MP gain%
• Shock Spikes: Duration of Effect >>> Damage of Effect

There are lots of possibilities and they would all help add an additional dimension of strategy to battles without burdening the whole system down. Perhaps it wouldn't be used for every TP move. And some moves might have their own custom secondary meter... (think the slots for Tifa's Limit Break in FFVII, or the triggers for the gunblade overdrive in FFVIII)

Now that FFXIV's battle system is on a solid foundation, I would like to see some of the very forward-thinking ideas from the original design brought back into it.

I've been playing from alpha yet I don't remember this D:
Though then again my PC was rubbish and didn't upgrade until launch lol

But anyway, this looks awesome. Kinda wish I'd played alpha/beta a bit more to have learnt about this =/

I forgot entirely about this! Now that combat is smooth, it'd be nice to see the ability to enhance standard moves like this.

They must have nixed it before I started playing in beta...

It's basically a meter that pops up for tp moves and such that the more you allow it to fill the stronger an effect you get?

Could be neat... Sounds like Cyan's swordtech/bushido abilities from ff6.

I just want the stamina bar back for ARC. It was stupid to take it away from ARC when it didn't get auto attack. The timer bug makes the class too painful to play. It wasn't half as bad with the stamina bar.

this would be epic.

Hell yeah! I hope they bring back Good Original Ideas.
Meanwhile, can someone explain me how do you fill the Meter? :P

It goes up and down over time, you don't do anything to fill it. It's a timing thing.

and What effects the timing? Monster attributes?

EDIT: About Limit Breaks, a few months ago Rukkirii mentioned:
"Matsui let us know that this would be an idea that they will look into after the battle adjustments take place."

It's more like, there was a curved bar with 3 meters that could fill.
It would start off with 0 meters, after a few seconds one would be filled, then two, then 3 then it'd go back to two, then 1 and then 0. The pattern just repeats itself but the effect of the attack accuracy/attack power and so on were affected by how many meters were filled when you used the skill.

It sounds complicated, I WANT IT.

Though to be honest, I'm glad it was taken out. All it served to do was double the amount of times we had to press a button to activate a skill, mask the presence and use of stamina, and slow combat down to a crawl.

on a side note /wave to any one who's test characters name appears in the shot, that day was one of my favorite xiv memory's.

Ahh the memories made back on ShadowLord server. Is this from the night I planned a big party for around ageless wise crystal and didn't make it because my internet was being retarded. Oh how Idealistic I was in wanting to test tanking on the Alpha. Or was it beta 1 I was trying to do that.

IIRC the system didn't work all that well. but really nothing did in Alpha. the servers were soooo bad.

It'd be really Awesome If they could Revamp and Improve Old Ideas and implement them, with of course, testing to see If It suits the Battle System. I'm all for making the Battle more Epic and Cool(With Limit Breaks/Overdrive/1-2Hr Ability/etc)

looks like it could be a really great thing to add, maybe it could be arrange to only function with skill chains battle regimens maybe, that would make timing tthe whole skillchain a more strategic thing.

The functionality of it wasn't really spelled out during the ALPHA, and lets face it, not much worked back then. But as I recall, it seemed to me that you could either attack right away for an accuracy bonus, or wait until it was completely charged and get a power bonus instead. (ALPHA was so buggy, it was hard to even get a baseline idea of how things were supposed to work so we could evaluate them)

It was a rough concept then, and it shouldn't have existed for normal attacks, but if it were to be revamped and reintroduced with certain TP attacks, I think it would really set FFXIV's battle system apart.

It's really hard to say whether it was a good idea or not, I can't even really remember if I thought it functioned well at the time or not.
Believe it or not though, the concept of the original battle system way back then was my favorite of the 3 that have been in FFXIV thus far. I definitely liked it better than the stamina stuff and liked it marginally better than the auto-attack system we have now.

Hard to say whether I'd want the charge bar back though especially since it wasn't my favorite part of the old system. My favorite part was actually that off-hand actions were on their own timer. Made using shields pretty awesome. Also, perhaps I am wrong but it felt like the built-in delay between actions wasn't as long then too. Like, using consecutive buffs didn't feel like it took quite as long. But then again that was a year ago so I might just be remembering how I want to remember it.

Charismatic, we agree on something. I liked it better than all the systems as well. I don't know why they didn't try and go back to it. I would love to see some of the old stuff back in the game!

I'd love to see the Charge-Up Meter be reinstated similar to Cyan.


Click and hold the attack in the action bar. The character changes to a Charging up animation. While charging the character no longer auto attacks, and slowly gains Enmity as their power gets focused, Then letting go at the right time just as the meter maxes out causes an explosive bonus to the attack If you are too early or too late you only get half that bonus.

Can be a good idea to get this back (if well done effect and charging animation wise, and if it fits with other incoming battle system adjustments).

Could be exclusive for some weaponskills intended to be big damage dealers, or as a replacement for "drain all TP > added bonus for extra TP above base TP required" system some weapon skills have (like Victimize and Quick Nock).

It'd definitely be more visual than the current system, charging time being the X factor instead of extra TP drained that leaves you TP-less.

Bumping this thread for a couple of reasons, get a few more people to read it. Also kind of a response to auto attack being to slow thread. I believe this would make a more engaging combat system with the auto attack. It will also be unique (to me at least) from other mmos.

I agree, but server optimization should take first. dont want good idea hampered by sluggish ui

Yep, what they need is a server here in the US, that should help out a lot.

No thanks I remember this and don't want it back, what with combos, possibly combo regimens and super combos in boss fights i don't think we need more to be added to the battle system.

You remember it when it was SUPER laggy and couldn't do anything.*cough* alpha*cough* They need to make a complex yet simple battle system, that's the best way to go. This would also add depth.

They already drastically changed the battle system and did not add it back in. Because of this, I don't see them adding this in again. Yoshida said he's got one chance to drastically change things and that's it. Battle has been changed, this is not a part of it. They'd have to change almost everything related to the battle system again if they wanted to include something like this again. I just don't see it happening, good idea or not.
