Can scholar get a spell or trait called Scan?

I feel like this would go a long way since this is the traditional scholar ability...don't believe me? FfIII, scholars first appeared with the ability peep/scan :) their main purpose was allowing you to know enemy weaknesses.

I feel like if they cast the spell scan, maybe it can Debuff the enemy so that allies can know its weakness and hit more often for critical hits or some such thing. It can cost an aetherflow stack. It can also be used to lower enemy damage or some such thing.

Alternatively, a trait called scan which simply increases crit chance or whatever could work.

I know some here will argue that scan belongs to blue Mage. You aren't wrong! In fact this skill might work better with them if they ever enter the world of FFXIV. It just belonged to scholar first :)

But what would it scan?

Elemental weakness?
Psychical/magical damage resistance?

Is there even anything in this game to be weak to?

Scan wouldn't work in this game cause there nothing to be weak too, like in past FFs "this mob is weak to fire" doesn't exist in XIV.

If they added it, it would just be a blanket debuff akin to Trick Attack.
Weaknesses aren't really a thing in this game since Yoshi-P doesn't want a specific class to have an overt advantage or disadvantage in a given fight, unless you're talking mechanics (t11 for black mages...ugh)

Actually, I think it would make a good machinist skill, seeing as past FF titles have had a 'tech' feel to the ability. :)

Could make it a debuff similar to trick attack from NIN or decrease piercing resist like DRG have.

Scan: Determines enemies weakness.

Aim: Allows targets attacks to exploit enemies weakness for X seconds.

Alternatively go for more of a combo system with Scholars healing aspects;

Scan: Determines enemies elemental alignment, next Adloquium/Succor/Sacred Soil is enhanced with increased resistance to that element.

Perhaps a combination of the two, giving Scan to Machinist like Natsuno suggests and let Aim do different things for different Jobs. For Scholar it boosts elemental resistance. For Black Mage it boosts elemental potency. etc. etc.

I like this idea. Plus the name for 'Machinist Scan' isn't important. It could be Aim, Lock-On, etc. I'm sure there's other usable names too. :)

There is nothing wrong wtih BLMs in T11 at all.

But yea, what could Scan possibly do?

We could scan their HP. It would be fun to know how much HP each boss has

Even just more detailed information would be interesting, like showing the monster's hp in numbers rather than just a bar. Displaying their immunities and current status resistance level (so you can tell when it's resistance to something has reset). Maybe if they wanted to go in depth with it, add a bestiary and make it so when you scan a monster it gets added to the list with all the moves it uses with a description of what they do, similar to our own actions.
E.G. Scan Titan (hard):
Hp: ?????/?????
Abilities:
Landslide- Line AoE dealing ??? Potency damage, additional effect: knockback.
Etc.

So you basically want everything handed to you.

There are these things called mechanics, which scan would completely trvialize if you knew exactly what they would be before they even happened. Would sort of make any server/world first a lot less noteworthy.

why bother with that when people will just use YouTube anyway?

I don't know if people just didn't read all of the OP's post or if he added in further ideas for what FFXIV's version of Scan could do after all the posts.

Either way, I must beg the question: did no one read the ideas for Scan suggested by the OP? Made enough sense to me - just a debuff on the enemy that makes them more susceptible to crits by virtue of the party now "knowing weaknesses".

But by that logic, it would seem very silly that when Scan wears off, the party suddenly "forgets" the weakness. You're better off going by some sort of bleed/viral effect so it would make a bit of sense.

They forget because they have other things to worry about than keep track of every single little detail of the monster in front of them. I'd rather worry about the giant mountain coming my way. This is just my train of thought though.

I don't know why "it's a classic Scholar ability" is the reasoning here. Other than the oft-repeated "this doesn't make sense for this game", Scholar in FFXIV is, well, NOTHING like previous incarnations. Does it strike you as a master of black magic AND white magic? Or... does it seem like a healer with shields and a faerie?

Oh, sorry. Their original AF is very Scholar-like. That's something, I guess.

Not really. I don't know about a Scan ability, but a personal bestiary would be amazing. In traditional FF games, all that info is only filled into the bestiary once you've beaten it first, or individual ability descriptions fill in as you encounter them. I don't think having more information about what a boss does in an encounter trivializes anything, rather it's the execution that really matters. It would actually be nice to not have to wonder wtf that ability you just encountered actually does, as opposed to figuring it out via trial and error, and well just plain guessing. Your argument could be applied equally to having the bosses' HP percentage shown, and it's just as silly.

Besides, even if it did trivialize world firsts, I think more people would benefit from having a cool bestiary to browse that it's really a worthy trade-off.

But would people really use it? It would be a one and done spell since people would learn the boss' rotations/attacks by heart. Besides, nothing in this game is so complex that you need an ability just to learn what an attack does; all the game is "keep away from the glowy AOEs that do big owies and sometimes something else that makes you sick". Almost every class so far has the one or two abilities that no one ever uses due to them being overly situational or completely useless at the current end game, so this Scan ability is nothing but a novelty for the sake of "tradition".

I wouldn't mind Scan being added to game as just a fluff skill that shows total hp, status immunities, and some basic lore (with most/all bosses being immune to it). I'd prefer though if they added it, for it to be a non class specific action, like sprint, instead of wasting a Sch skill on it.

Hey, sometimes there's 'get in the glowy AoEs before they go boom,' but you're correct that there is no need for a Scan ability in the game as it stands. It could be turned into a debuff of some kind that increases damage dealt to the target, reduces evasion, but I'm not sure if that's really within the scope of the original ability, or if it should be just be given a different name.

If you plan to make scanning a debuff, it would be better off as a different name entirely. And I can already see the flood of threads whining how Scan is not like the traditional Scan. Goodness knows we have everything else in the game that breaks tradition for the sake of keeping things flowing and uniform.

Sounds like reasoning to make Scholar more Scholar-like, in my opinion.

As it stands, Scholar isn't Scholar. It's Summoner II. They couldn't possibly give Summoner all the summons since there has to be some sense of balance. Scholar is literally just Rydia if her only summon was Sylph. It's Scholar in name and AF only, there is putting a different spin on a Job and then there is just not delivering that Job at all...

Throw in a strategic set of skills and actually make Scholar worthy of its title... Scan could easily work in a similar fashion to Aetherflow to be honest; You Scan an enemy, get stacks of Intel, can use them to use various abilities. Although we already have Aetherflow, so why bother? I'd love to see Summoner actually focus on the pets, rather than DoTs and Fester, and Scholar focus more on utilizing Aetherflow tactically. Just Sacred Soil is fairly lackluster... Such a shame that they couldn't get dual Jobs for a Class down well...

Pro-tip for turn 11 as BLM, stay at the side move towards the front but out of cleave range, then you only have to sidestep twice to avoid nerve cloud(gas?). Covers your side? Side step out of it towards the front, sidestep back so out of frontal cone. easy ^_^

Phase 3? save a proc for just before he casts again and you have to move, if no proc, scathe.

Adding elemental wheel doesn't make it more complex, it just limits what spells/abilities you can use, So less tools to use means it makes it even "more basic". Weak to fire? spam fire. Weak to ice? spam ice. no weaknesses? Use your full set of abilities. Which of the 3 is most basic?

Or you mean like FFXI where it was spam thunder, unless mob is strong to thunder and only then did you spam something else. Or weapon skills, you only use 1 for 99% of everything, rest are ignored as the one you use is the most potent. THAT is basic.

Or it scans and reveals a weak spot for extra crit chance (and maybe after being exposed, the monster, in terms of lore, covers up his weak spot making him unable to be scanned for a minute or so, like virus). Or it could have any number of effect. It would be a new take on a classic ability that belongs to a classic job with a new spin :)

Edit: And there's no reason to assume that the OP meant knowing weaknesses literally. He could have meant it figuratively, as in making the skill let everyone "know weaknesses", which would simply add a lore-based and logical reason to explain why the enemy would take more damage from the skill/trait. Didn't necessarily mean that he wanted exact numbers like:

Fire resistance: 267
Water Resistance: 292
...etc

Sort of like how Bio explains that "organs are failing, causing damage" or whatever. Scan could say something like "Weaknesses have been exposed and are being exploited, increasing damage taken" on its debuff tooltip.

I would love Scan to be introduced as a SCH skill.

It's their iconic skill, and can be used to increase damage dealt similar to TA etc.

Would be nice.

Not sure it would be viable or even useful, but trying to tie it into the idea of "gathering more information" on the boss, maybe it could be a buff ability where, for the duration, you get information sooner, or for longer, so have more time to react? Maybe something like seeing T10s prey targets showing up a bit earlier, or who will be tether pairings next in T11, who's getting purgatory/redfire in T12, who's getting shakers in T13...? Maybe even where titans plumes will be (doubt this one, as it's based on where people when it goes off, but know would please a lot of people lol)

Like I said no idea if this could even be done, but thought it might be a bit more interesting than the standard damage buff, might helping when progressing turns and tightening up on the mechanics (or it might have the complete opposite effect, whereby you'd become reliant on having the extra reaction time lol)

the scan spell could be able to give you/ your party instead of a % the actually number HP of the monster so for the Cloud of darkness who has 3 million HP (as told to me by XIVDB ) when he other parties in the aliance see 50% you and your party can see 1,523,817/3,000,000 Hp :D

But why would you have a spell that toggles a number when that could easily be used as an optional feature in the game tiself?

scan should work the same as trick attack , share the love SE :P

or give it to BRD/MCH , bards are archers after all , and machinist can scan the moster with a machine :3
