He's sort of got a point but it's lost in his messy examples.
Tanks are quite under confident most of the time I'm on DPS - they usually wait 500 years to pull anything in Lab/ST/WoD. It does get quite infuriating when you just want to get to the part where you hit the boss and all the tanks are afk.
Because of that? Communication needs to be upfront as to what type of run to do, mind reading isn't so easy. From his post there was no communication, off to a bad start. If it was said that the tank wasn't comfy with mass pulls and that guy did that, I would have let him die, you pull it, you own it. Communication is key.
Honestly if something that minuscule triggers you, you're going to have trouble in any role. You're playing an MMO filled with autistic weeaboos who don't know the difference between constructive criticism and just shouting angrily at things. Get thicker skin and get over it.
Ok, so this is bothering me, wtf is a weaboo? I've seen the terminology, but don't exactly know what it's supposed to mean
Weaboo is just another term for otaku but usually aimed towards Americans/Westerners anime fans, someone who likes Japanese stuff to the point of nausea..
anyway
I'm still not comfortable with big pulls. I don't even tank unless a friend is healing for me, still not that confident enough yet. If it's particularly bad, ask a friend to come with you. If other people start pulling crap ask them not to, if they keep doing it kick them. Easy.
Hahaha.... I stopped going to 24-man raids as anything but tank. I feel better leading (most) of the raid as MT, I just saw so many bad tanks that don't want the responsibility to pull, position and hold bosses. I had one WAR in LoTA straight up say in /p chat he didn't want hate at the first dragon.
As for pulling; I admit that use ready check >50% of the time, otherwise, as long as my healers are set and I see that most of the blue and green dots on my map are in the right place, I'll pull.
I could go on... :)
I can see his point when most everyone is overgeared for ask the content, but yeah messy examples. It's important to understand many people enter their exp roulettes on classes they geared farming on other classes. 90% of the time the tank will run at a nice pace doing moderate pulls without any issues. Sometimes you get a tank who just doesn't enjoy doing that and goes a bit slower. Usually I'll say, "You are super easy to heal if you want to pull more," and they'll comply. If not I just go with whatever they want to do. I wouldn't purposely aggro other groups. I find that rude.
OP, not sure why this would discourage you from tanking. All of the responses he got did not agree with his behavior at all. That should at least show you where the majority stands. As a tank, if a group has someone who is as abrasive as this guy I'll take the 30 minute penalty. I think I've only done that one time though.
I am what you can call a "casual tank" (Tank is ilv113)
I have all job leveled up and decked out in WoD gear
I find tanking quite enjoyable every once and a while, but I don't do it often enough to be truly good at it. Luckily this doesn't happen too often since the new dungeons have gates, so mass pulling is limited.
But it is still annoying when a DPS (or healer, but thats abit more forgivable) pull without prior notification. How hard is it to say "mass pull plz?"
As a PLD tank, when doing roulette, I never know what kind of group I am going to get. Just because people have good gear does not mean they are paying attention or playing at 100% (I am guilty of this when healing on autopilot while drunk cus im overgeared). As a result of this, I DONT PULL EXTRA GROUPS off the bat...i see how the healer does, and how fast the dps take stuff down, is the dps single target or group? (ST dps takes out small groups in succession faster than a massive group) I love it when a healer says: "You can grab more if you want" or DPS says: "I'm AOE, can we pull more?" BUT I cannot stand, DPS or Healers deciding that things are not fast enough, and pulling for me. It is rude and makes my job harder. I often hear the excuse "what's the big deal, you can pull it off me." sure, I can, but now I don't want to cus your a dick... I will usually allow that to happen once. Second Time, I will say, please let me pull. Third time, I let you take it...
Just for sake of clarity I'd want to add: Otaku and weaboo are not the same. Weaboo is a derogatory term. It's considered fandom that's motivation is based on social inclusion/identification and not genuine interest in the material.
On topic: Gamefaqs message boards.. stay away :)
Lol, can't believe we made an insult for that.
Still, on tha fact of tanking, I mained pld, zeta and all until a couple weeks ago, now I'm war. Still, in all my months tanking, I never pulled big groups, simply because I didn't know how to handle them. I was doing zodiac drop dungeons and almost felt ashamed because a pld with lesser fear in every way pulled every mob possible together, and I couldn't handle more than one group. So I watched him. And I learned how to do it. Nobody ever really complained that I was so slow. I was asked to go faster, replied by telling them I couldn't handle it. Honestly, there are some bad eggs, but the majority of players are not like that, surprisingly.
Would suggest going as a dps in a dungeon and watch how they handle the big pulls, then try a few things out yourself.
dungeons, I just pull big until we wipe, then I pull smaller, and in ct/st/wod I just go sword oath and if a tank in defiance or shield oath cant hold agro then I MT.
ppl will complain about anything and everything, just do what you want to do, you are the tank. normally if someone is pissy you can just vote kick them(im sure that makes their day lol) and get a fc/ls mate to jump in progress.
I've simply gotten to the point where if somehow that happens I let the DPS die and move on. If you're able to take hate from me you get my comm, if you somehow got ahead of me and pull an add I assume you want to test your defensive abilities and respect that decision.
I hate when dps rush me too, they run ahead and pull mobs. I just stand there and watch them, saying they can tank and ill dps lol.
But that doesnt stop me from tanking. If people dont like the way you tank, then tell them to kiss it and do what makes you comfortable. Or, you could always leave,
and they would have to wait a while for another tank :P
I pull no more than 2-3 groups on the first pull generally unless I'm with DPS i play with and trust. You prove to me you can handle it then i'll pull bigger.
If your gonna run ahead and pull groups for no other reason than your impatience then im gonna let you die.
If im in 24 man raids then I simply wait for everyone to cross the line. If there is someone lagging far behind then that is their problem. I'm not gonna be the guy that holds up 22 other people because Tiny Tim the wonder DPS went afk and didnt move with the group.
I don't know why more tanks don't understand this. When we get to a boss, I bring up my map and watch people file in. If everyone crosses, I'm going. If you're more than 30 seconds behind, I'm going. The Towers don't need all 24 people in each fight. If another tank has even stricter time frames and pulls before me, then I guess they're MT and Defiance is going off.
On the other hand, if a DPS gets antsy and pulls before me, then I guess they're MT and Defiance is going off until the laughter subsides.
Ive been in that situation a few times and usually the nin and monk are too crappy to make it worth pulling everything possible, its just as fast to start moving when things are closer to dead. If I see they have excellent gear I have slightly more hope, but I dont expect dps to bring their "A game" to every ex roulette, sad truth.
Wiping due to an undergeared or inept healer, or spending five minutes trying to kill two packs of trash because of piss-poor AOE, isn't much of a timesaver. Really, NIN+MNK is one of the DPS combos that makes my heart sink a little as it's about the worst AOE you can have, and it's probably just as fast to pull one pack at a time and single-target nuke the mobs than have them dinking away with their AOE that hits like handfuls of wet noodles.
Really, it's only when there's a well-geared WHM (dat holy), or at least one BLM or BRD that I feel it's that much of a time-saver to pull multiple packs. Besides, if you're a DPS you probably just queued half an hour plus to get in, five minutes extra on the run itself should be nothing by comparison - if anything, it's the tank with his instant queues who has the most incentive to go fast, as it proportionally shaves a lot more time off of the queue plus run time.
conversely, i've once tanked BF HM with a WHM NIN & MNK and the nin told me not to pull too much. after that one pull he was out of TP but both were good enough that the healer seldom had to do cure 2 on them. i guess that nin thinks he can do everything... though i think i threw i a cover on that nin so that he can aoe more. XD
Altho I agree with letting them burn, the problem is that most DPS are so stupid at holding aggro themselves that the mob they brought about go to the Healer and then starts the stupid chain comments of bad Tank and stuff... :|
Hence even pulling that off takes some skill from the tank :v
On another hand, having a NIN+MNK combo can be quite fun, actually, you could pull only one at a time, maybe, but who said you have to stay right there? you could simply keep the party moving and pull more and more while they keep on killing stuff, never letting the fun die~♪
Helping the MNK keep up their stack can be quite entertaining as a Tank.
Be polite but get diplomatic on their a****s and give them these options:
1:"Please, lets stop being negative and help me, we all need to work together to get thru this and this will help me learn. I'm willing to listen to your tips and things you see me doing wrong so I can correct them. :)" (Make sure you do the smiling face!)
2: "You guys can votekick me and a more experience Tank will pop up instantly for you :)." (Yea right, let them simmer in that thought and they will realize they will be waiting long again)
3: You can votekick the one complaining and we can get someone else to dps/heal who will put up with my mistakes and help along the way.
Bonus: If all else fails and they continue on and don't help complete the dungeon just say "Thanks for your time." and LEAVE.
TLDR: Give them the smiley face and do your job. If they don't like it or don't want to help you then they can either votekick you or they can GTFO!
I have to confess, I am a huge softy for my healers. The moment my healers are in danger nothing else matter's until they're safe .__.
and I love having Monk's because of the challenge to keep their stacks by pulling right. But that's also because I absolutely rage when I lose a stack myself.
Yea, and I always go with my Healer friend so if something will happen to her I rather jump in first >:¬|
I also started this game as a MNK so I know how annoying losing stacks on such intermitent mobs is, but Tanking on places like AV can be fun if you can keep the things coming XP
Starting a run with a "hi~♪, wish you guys a fun run, however possible" makes the trick for the most of it :v
