Was it confirmed today that the DirectX 11 features won't be on the PS4 client?

There's been a lot of miscommunication on this. At one point in time I heard that the DirectX 11 additions would be applied to the PS4 version as well, that only some of those features would be, and today, there was no mention of a PS4 client, just that the PC client would be free?

I'm pretty sure it was never said that the PS4 would support DirectX 11 features.

PS4 uses OpenGL, not DirectX, DX is owned by Microsoft

PS4 uses its own libraries that support DX9-DX11 features(you can be sure that microsoft and sony struck some sort of deal for this)
it is not infact OpenGL but has OpenGL features in its libraries as well
so yes they could add DX11 support to the PS4 if they wanted to, but whether they will or not depends on the difficulty of it I think.

really you should go research this, the libraries sony has for the PS4 are some of the best I have seen. its facinating.

They never said the ps4 version would ever get those features.

Its all what is determined by acceptable performance hits, due to the PS4 getting no upgrades for hardware, theres no point adding features that returns the PS4 gaming experience back to the PS3 levels, performance that SE in fairness whats rid of.

Low end PCs can always be upgraded and components are not expensive for mid end gaming.

The main advantage the PS4 has over the PS3 is not graphics, it is sustained higher frame rates so that they can do content with less likely hood of being excluded from groups due to performance lag/stutter.

PS4 doesn't use directx so it wouldn't have any of the features.

the PS4 has directx feature libraries in its tools, I really wish people would research before they speak up. the PS4 can with some tweaking use features from DX9 to DX11. this was done on purpose by sony to give developers familiar with DirectX easier times with their tools. again this is likely some deal between microsoft and sony so that microsoft could keep using some property that belongs to sony.

Oh my gosh. Please stop saying PS4 doesn't use DX. PS4 does use DX! DX11.2 to be exact. It is built from the DX11.1 with modifications and improvements from Sony.

Those improvements include better shader pipeline access, improved debugging support features out the box, and much lower level access to the system hardware enabling developers to do more cool things. Thats achieved not only through a modified DirectX 11.1 API, but also a secondary low-level API specifically for the PS4 hardware.

I think its more about how difficult doing it would be vs the investment. despite it having a decent shelf life the PS4 is still a limited set of hardware, therefore they have to decide if the time needed to impliment such features that will most likely give the system a performance hit would be worth it.

it isn't exactly DirectX11.1, their tools have feature sets from DX11.1 but it is not exactly DirectX. but their tools are also built from features from OpenGL(I forget what version) and some of their own feature sets. sony's tools for the PS4 are rather impressive, you should look em up.

The graphics on PS4 are already optimized for PS4

DirectX 11 is actually a lot more streamlined than DX9. If it was brought to the PS4 the game would actually run better, not worse.

Feature Set. Important word.

Theres a problem with this you are not looking into, a more stream lined process gives a few things, either make it more efficient at the same visuals so more FPS or crank up the settings a bit more at the same FPS or lower FPS, now this depends on the settings to use, tesselation would consume all the GPU grunt the PS4 has, and the shadows also have an impact on CPU in which the APU in the PS4 is rather weak on at the moment.

It is far better to squeeze more FPS so that FPS stays closer to 60 FPS more of the time then up the graphics for more dips, this is a team based game, more performance is important, people will get annoyed just like they are currently at the PS3 players for the extra 'lag' they comes from it.

this I totally agree with.
slightly off topic but appropriate I think. I was telling a friend the other day I honestly think SE should have dumbed down the graphics on the PS3 a bit to gain FPS and save a little on memory. maybe it's just me but I think it could have worked better that way.

Direct X is software that provides a framework for developers to access certain hardware featues more easily. The fact thst Direct X 11 is more efficient is Due to the libraries opening up more GPU features to developers. The same hardware features can be driven be any other equivalent API library, such as OpenGL. DirctbX is an MS specific graphics library designed to allow Windows developers to talk to the hardware better. It is not hardware, and in no way is it intrinsicly better than any other software. It doesn't mater whether or not PS4 directly supporstbDirect X calls or not, the underlying hardware features are present and may be accessed just as easily using Open GL.

The only impact of Direct X on PS4 is that the PS4 may perform better just as modern PCs should, since the use of the GPU under Direct X uses more advanced features allowing the PS4 version to similarly make better use of the GPU resources it has.
