Lock-On Camera Request

Hey developers, I have a request regarding the lock-on camera. Can it be changed, or have an option, of NOT having the camera focus on whatever I lock-on to? I'll state my reason behind it. I play on PS4, using a controller. As you know, in order to maximize dps as a melee, I always have to face my target in order to not lose auto attacks. However, with Legacy controls (which I Iove), that is not possible. Why? I cannot strafe side to side. My character will hit my target yes, but face different directions, and also make positional attacks not fluid at all. So my only option is to lock-on to my target, and my character will be able to strafe while facing my target. However the lock on camera gives me motion sickness the way it is only fixated on one thing. In addition even if it did not, since it focuses on one thing it is nearly impossible to pay attention to your sorroundings and makes it very hard to see anything else, especially if my target is huge blocking everything around it.

My only solution? It is to switch to standard controls. Standard controls is actually really nice, as a melee I feel I have a lot more control of my character, however as a mage, I feel extremely restricted. Putting aside how I feel, there is also the issue of less situational awareness. With a mouse you can use standard, double click the screen and still rotate the camera. On a PS4 I have to softly double tap (hold) the touchpad, which is equivalent of "holding the screen", and then I am able to rotate my camera. However this is near impossible to do while moving. For example dodging Divebombs in T13. With standard I cannot look behind me while dodging without my fingers being placed awkward AND moving the inverse direction. I like legacy controls and I prefer not to be having to switch all the time. Sure I can force myself to play on standard, but I believe my request can be a nice quality of life change.

My request summary: Can there be an option to make lock-on camera stay the same while using legacy controls? In other words, can my CHARACTER lock on to my target without my camera doing the same? Thanks for reading!

Edit: And yes I have the option of just playing with mouse/keyboard on my PS4 but I prefer not too. I am mainly a console gamer with years using a controller. I don't want to relearn the game, never gamed using M/KB, in which my brain has already accustomed muscle memory, just for 3 classes. I prefer controller. I like controller. Thanks.

I second this, really. I would like to use lock-on for obvious reasons but the way it works now I lose all battlefield awareness which is more important to me than getting that little bit of extra damage.

Why not just play on the PS4 with a mouse and keyboard? I always thought that was an option...

Because I don't like using mouse/keyboard. I'm mainly a console gamer and used to years of using a controller.

I think it is, but a lot of players prefer using a controller (myself among them). I play on PC, but use an Xbox One controller by choice for several reasons.

I use Lock-on as well to not miss auto attacks and also it's easier to repostion myself around the boss (I tank alot) without ending up moving out of Melee range or something else.
But lock-on sadly sucks since the camera isn't following my character, but would rather keep a focus on my target <__>

So yes! Please make the camera follow the player and not the target.

Please fix the lock on camera. Makes it almost unbearable to play a melee with the horrid camera angles that occur fighting certain bosses due to the varied sizes of bosses in the game.

Also would like to know why camera movement is restricted with target lock-on in the first place devs refuse to look into the issue.

I tried using a mouse to play ff on the ps4 once... It didn't last more than an hour, though because there's too much lag for me. Controller works best!

They should change it back how it was during 1.x

During 1.x the camere was always behind the character with lock-on. Camera, player and target in one line.
In ARR the camera don't follow the player instantly if the player start to circle the target, but wait until the player walked away from the screen center, and that confuse me because I have always to look if the character is really behind the target even if the target show his back to the screen.

If they do change this, I hope they make it an optional setting. I LIKE the camera to focus on what I'm locked onto.

In fact, my biggest complaint is that the camera WON'T focus on dead players that I lock onto. As a healer, when I attempt a cure and a player is out of range, I'll sometimes lock on so I can figure out where that player is, and run closer to them so that they are in range. With out-of-range dead players, though, for some reason the camera won't focus on them during lock-on, making it tougher to figure out what direction I need to move in order to cast Raise. It's kind of bizarre, and annoying, to have this exception to the rule...

Been meaning to make a post on this FOREVER.
Never really understood why I had to be completely limited on my point of view just so I wouldn't miss auto attacks. My raid members are generally accommodating to it, but it gets tiring always asking them to call stuff (ex. blm/brd having earthshakers to determine which side to run to) just because I can't see it because of lock on camera issues. Though, I made a T13 kill video for us and my raid members are a bit more understanding, you can really see how limiting the point of view is. As much as I'd love to use a mouse/keyboard setup, using a controller is like second nature coming from a console gaming background.

No I do not want it to be changed, but having a option doesn't sound bad at all.

I personally love lock-on, I use it as much as I can. It's legit a focus targeting mode and the fact that the camera also locks makes it perfect, in my opinion, for dodging close AOE's like Nerve Gas, moving AROUND your target and nailing positions. This is up for debate but if you want positions I think simply turning the stick in a circle is easier than moving the stick in a specific direction.


The only times I don't use lock-on are very obvious. Can't use it in T13 when you gotta watch out for things like ES and Megaflare, can't use it in T10 sometimes because you have to be aware. when I can't use it, I simply switch out of it without effort. Sure it sucks going without lock-on but hey when you can't use it, you better not be using it.


I recently tried out Archer for the first time and honestly I think it gives a similar benifit. Whether or not I'll be able to use it I do not know, though.

Tbh all I really want them to do is to enable us to run backwards at the full speed we can run in any other direction.

This was an issue that has bugged me ever since FFXI and it pained me to see it was still the same way here.

I mean, hell, Link in the N64 Zelda games could run FASTER backwards.

I get around this by locking on and then pressing up/forward since locking onto a target has your movements revolve around them ala Ocarina of Time.

Lol yeah it feels so......weird

This would be a helpful feature for people who play with gamepads whether they are on PC or PS4/PS3.

Just lock on when you need to strafe/move for a positional then lock off again once you are in position. The time spent actually locked on should only be the duration of the movement when you need to keep a close eye on things in all directions. Would be nice to have full control of the camera though I agree.

I understand what you're asking for but personally I'd like a lock on that lets me have the target lock on but keep my character movement still be in legacy. And maybe some camera lock socket instead of just locking into one point so I can still tilt the camera to get a bigger total view while still locked on? Maybe I'm not explaining it in an easy to understand manner but...ninja gaiden style lock on maybe? The xbox/360/ps3 ninja gaiden games I mean.

But that's exactly what I want lol

I would like to see an option for this, too. I mostly play ranged characters because whenever I play melee I can't do it properly because the lock on is too restricting and I can't see a thing.
