You know what would be great? The option to use *ONLY* a Forename

At the Chocobo Races in the Gold Saucer, when naming your Chocobo, you have the option of using *ONLY* a Forename. Instead of characters referencing you by First, Land, or First-and-Last name, you would just have a singular name.

I like this idea for a lot of reasons, but namely because there are names I love using, but don't have a "matching last name" for them. The main ones being:

Terin

Andaris

Drashuga

I love the idea of having a Warrior named Drashuga because, hey, it just sounds very "primative" and "strong", I think. But... how do you even come up with a last-name for something like that? Or Andaris?

Chocobo names can only be one name. You don't have to name them two names.

You can actually set the GUI to only show first names if you so wish - it's in the Settings menu if I remember rightly. First name and surname are displayed by default though.

Last I checked on this, I think the best you could do was show the last name as a single letter, but not get rid of it completely. I could be wrong, though.

Usually the problem with this is that every name imaginable is taken within the first week. You want to be named Lestat? Sorry taken. Ok, try Lastat. Nope, sorry taken. Lastatte! Boom, character created. Congratulations on getting a name you never wanted and are not satisfied with. At least with our current method you can pick any first name that you desire; as long as the last name doesn't match up with someone elses.

There's far greater freedom this way. In the past you'd have to jump from server to server hoping your "forename only" hasn't been used by someone yet.

What about picking a better name?

I'd suffice with a hide last name option...completely.

I just wish we could set up the UI in game to only display character first names. Instead of First name + Initial, or just initials, or First initial+ Last name.

I think it's to prevent the servers from imploding when Cloud Strife, Cloud Stryfe, and Cloud Strafe are in a party together.

Just take what you've done with the surname, and do it with the for forename instead. Some people will just add duplicate letters in anyway because they 'really must have that name'. And let's not forget about adding Xs to the name, or thier own nationality.

Accented letters are out, iirc. That's opening up another can of worms right there.

The point of the surname/forename combo is to keep forenames from needing to be unique to begin with, because the hardest part of starting any MMO is finding a name you want that isn't already taken. Even "original" first names can be inexplicably taken on more populated servers.

(Also, if it wasn't painfully clear from the examples given, I was joking.)

I like this because i have a really hard time giving characters last names. I usually just go the game of thrones route for people with no family name and give them the surname "Snow"

Here we go again... I've lost count of how many times this thread topic has come up, going back to 1.0 beta.

The response is usually that coming up with a last name really isn't that hard and it keeps the occurrences of xXxXxSefphirawthxXxXxXx to a minimum. Personally I love having a last name and I always give my characters last names. Just my opinion.

It doesn't work, then! Not even joking, I did a DF run of a dungeon a while back, can't remember which dungeon, but was with a friend of mine. The other two players were Clouddhd Strife and Clouddd Strifeeee.

Or, in my case scenario, not being able to use the name "Tobi Maru" on my server because it is apparently already taken but there is no record of a character using that name on my server via lodestone.... so I had to do "Tobii Maru."
